VICE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE CL JARUSEK
How About A
Little Help
A ll of us I am sure, are a little bit independent
in our ways. We enjoy owning nice cars, displaying, racing and just appreciatively looking at them. Most of us, to some degree, got to this point in life on our own, and our own hard work. That brings me to my point for the month. Sometimes we needed a little help, or luck to get us to this point. Orange Coast Region has come a long way also and we have done that with some help, but we can also use some more.
Each month in some way or another, we request a little help, and with some great volunteers we make it. This past month, June, Mark Wallace had to enlist a lot of help to support the 47th Annual Concours. We had people promoting it, registering entrants, preparing the grounds, judging the judged cars, running scoring sheets to the scoring volunteers, timing the judging of each car, plus a multitude of others to help in other assignments. This is how the Club functions.
We also have volunteers at each of our AutoCross events, and volunteers helping Rob Greene parking cars at the Breakfast Club meeting. We never have too many volunteers, and if we do, the offer of volunteering is always welcome. We promise we are not going to work you too hard.
A couple of months ago in April, Zone 8 conducted the Festival of Speed at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. Again, a call for volunteers was made, and volunteers from OCR and other Regions from Zone 8 participated in parking cars, registering entrants and visitors, and a ton of other needs. Each volunteer who participates gives credit to OCR, and for the Festival in 2016, our Region realized a sharing of nearly $1000, which helps run OCR. You not only help make the event a success, but your few hours help our Regional needs. You also get a benefit of getting to know Porsche people from other Regions. They are people as passionate as we are.
Some of the biggest volunteers are the Board of Directors. Each Breakfast Club meeting day, and shortly after the meeting, and while most of you are going out and enjoying a beautiful day, a football game or going home to do ‘honey do’s’, we are in the “Boardroom” at Original Mike’s. I bring this up, because at the end of this year, as is the case each year, based on the staggering of elected terms, we have an election for Board members. This year, we have four positions open and none of the incumbents seem to be running again. The positions are President, Vice President, Treasurer and Membership Chair. These are important positions in the Club, and the continued
success depends on these positions. The Board controls a substantial budget and there are some duties that require some time. If you see some things that could be better, and if you have the desire to further your experience and learn the interactions of the Club, I ask that you contact one of the members of the Board and express your desire to participate. All members are invited to attend the Board meetings and hopefully, if you are interested, you will come in and see if you would like to take on the position. Hope to see you at a Board meeting, and please think about volunteering next time anyone is looking for help at an event.

Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington
50 YEARS PORSCHE 912 by Jürgen Lewandowski, published in 2016 by Delius Klasing Verlag, Bielefeld, Germany.
The outstanding photographs and ‘European’ layout are bound to make this book a classic. Originally published at $110, the quality of the presentation makes the price seem reasonable. Now available on-line at a considerable discount, any 912 enthusiast would be well advised to snap up a copy while they are still available. With numerous illustrations, references and even quotations from internal Porsche memos and minutes of meetings, this book is almost as much about corporate management history and politics, as it is about the cars. The genesis of the 901/911 and the 6-cylinder engine, the political infighting involved, and the development of a more inexpensive alternative, are dealt with in almost tedious detail in the first few chapters. It’s made clear in this discussion that the 912 was an afterthought, and not a welcome one at that. This, despite the fact that it’s shown that a great deal of the development/testing of the 911 car was conducted using 4 cylinder engines. Though it presents a very complete story of the creation and development of the 912 and the 912 E, including the
many complications and conflicts in its development and marketing; this is not a reference book – there are no charts and only one table (of serial numbers, which the text indicates is of questionable reliability). Also, no index is provided. Gems of wisdom are there, such as when and why the 911 dash was made a 3 dial for the 912 and then changed to a 5 dial. These gems are hard to find unless one reads the entire text. 50 YEARS PORSCHE 912 is an interesting, arguably fascinating, story. But, be advised that the first half of the book is devoted to the only 8 year period from 1957, (the initial conception of a replacement for the 356), to commencement of 912 production in 1965. The 912:Year-by-Year chapter provides a very detailed description of the changes made as the model evolved. Other chapters in the latter half of the book detail the complexities and multiple ‘false starts’ for the 912 E program. There is a review of the USA-only 912 E by a German journalist, and a commentary on the restoration of a 912 prototype, by Rick Becker, 912/912 E Advocate for PCA.
devoid of any hint of the conventional explanation: ‘to use up leftover 914 engines’. The final photo spreads of this well illustrated book show very Germanic backgrounds for four 912s with California license plates, and their drivers. Who are these lucky guys? 50 YEARS PORSCHE 912 is a hardcover book with 178, 9 x 10-1/2 inch heavyweight, glossy pages, with many color photos of 912s and their features. It should be available for less than $40 from www.amazon.com/books. Even enthusiasts of early 911s should have a copy because of the information given about the design and initial development of the 901 cars.
Of particular interest to this reviewer is the documentation of the thought processes leading to the 912 E which are totally July 2017 | PANDO 9

PORSCHE PEOPLE : Pfun Pfacts Meet Malcolm Macondray,
PCA Member for 48 years!
Malcolm may look familiar; he attends just about every OCR Event the Club offers.
He generally volunteers at the Club’s New Member Picnic and Toys for Tots Event – usually first man to arrive and last to leave, as he typically is designated ‘clean up’ guy … somebody has to do it! When Malcolm first joined PCA in Minnesota, PCA was nothing but Autocross and time trials, there were no social activities. Well, that’s changed! Malcolm can’t get enough of our social activities. You’ll run into Malcolm patronizing most of the Club’s gastronomic functions these days, Original Mike’s, Krispy Kreme, BurgerBahn, Pizza gathering, and most recently, impromptu lunches with some of the Club’s youthful ‘retiree’ gang. Malcolm has owned six Porsches over 49 years (he waited one year before joining PCA). His first Porsche was a 1968 912 Targa, soft window. The Targa wasn’t long for the roads; after 18,000 miles in seven months, poor Porsche was totaled. Next Porsche was a 1965 356; however, the 356 lived in South Dakota and was rusted when purchased. “Rusty” moved to Minnesota where it lived for another five years. Malcolm now tours the scenic roads of Southern Cal in a 1996 993 Carrera. We thank Malcolm for his years of loyalty to PCA, and are delighted he now ‘lives’ with OCR! July 2017 | PANDO 11
Utah’s Mighty 5 for Eight Days and the
F
or anyone who has ever been on a Keith and Lourinda Clark “K&L” Porsche trip, know when they’re hints of an upcoming trip, you just sign up! You don’t care where it is or how long, you just know it will be special! You might be thinking, “Why?” What is so different about a K & L road trip than the million other Porsche activities you can choose to participate in on a California weekend? A) The Cars? B) The People? C) Spirited Roads? D) Food/Wine? E) All of the Above? Of course, the correct answer is E (E ticket is more appropriate for all you long-time Californians!). But again, can’t you get all that with other Porsche (or any marquee) tours? Yes, but it’s just not the same! This, in the tour world, is the “whole package!” Every detail planned to perfection on an incredible adventure with the PEOPLE filling in the gaps along the journey to make new friendships and memories! First, let’s set the stage….UTAH’s MIGHTY 5 for EIGHT DAYS! This is surreal scenery! With breathtaking sunrises (which don’t sound too appealing at 4:30 a.m.!) and sunsets. For those of you that can’t remember your Fifth Grade U.S. History class, Utah’s Mighty Five consists of Canyonlands, Arches, Capital Reef, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks. Between coral-hued hoodoos (yep a real name), towering mountains, delicate rock bows, and slot canyons, the terrain and weather changes drastically in venue. Stunning topography at each destination does not disappoint us. Just imagine what our fifteen Porsches do to enhance nature’s incredible backdrop!

Lunch Break at Dead Horse Point overlooking Green River at Canyonlands
After our pre-drivers’ meeting and Porsche Goodie bags, we are prepared with precise driving directions, detailed itineraries and most importantly, the top secret “Utah or Bust” member handshake. We have our overflowing Porsches filled to the brim, excluding the lone Macan and Panamera! I think the Kaprielian’s and C.L. missed a golden opportunity to rent out storage space to the rest of us. With two people in each car, the interiors are bursting with cameras, clothing to handle 30-105 degree weather extremes, hiking boots, bicycle clothing/shoes/ helmets for those silly enough to go mountain biking, walkie-talkies, snacks/drinks (yikes - do people eat in their Porsches?), car cleaning supplies (why are we bothering, aren’t the bug splats like little trip trophies?), and a newly added green slime item (more details on that later!).
DAY 1 : Our first destination is Flannigan’s Inn and the Spotted Dog Café at the entrance to Zion. A charming place where we began our adventure with a group dinner. Next time you see Dave Goward ask him how his Tuna Soup tasted. While you are at it, ask Steve Eguina about Lisa and his grape juice.
DAY 2 : After our drive from the OC to Zion, Day 2 is a “relaxing” day in Zion, filled with many leisure options. Some people choose to not do things so leisurely. Lisa Hunter goes on an all-day canyoneering adventure! Steve Foster decides to explore the terrain on an extreme mountain bike adventure. Most of the group ended up on the Zion Canyon mini hikes. Kudos to all the trekkers that successfully reached the summit; especially Nancy Troast who was a real trooper with a lot of support from Keith and Pram lending her a hand through those narrow passages. The beauty of Zion geological contrasts is truly magnificent! Several of us brought our non-phone cameras to try and capture the splendor. Unfortunately, 14 PANDO | July 2017
it is rather difficult to use a camera when one forgets the battery charger in the hotel room. It does leave oneself open for an array of banter after a spirited run on foot back to the hotel! My so-called friends literally tried to throw me off the bus at the first opportunity for the slight delay! After a plentiful dinner and breakfast meal, we gather in our powerful Porsches to embark early to Bryce Canyon on Day 3 of our escapade. It is always a pleasure to caravan in our colorful Porsches! Thanks to the orange, red, and blue owners for adding some contrast to our pictures, since many of us were driving black, white and grey Porsches! The weather covering on my Spyder has to be removed each morning….since I never knew when the drive would become spirited! Porsche only rates the covering reliable to 120 mph! Then whoosh latch failure and no more top!
DAY 3 : Stop Number 2 of the five National Parks, Bryce, is truly poetry in stone as the brochure promises us! The place is mesmerizing with its vistas and hoodoos. All the weathering and erosion make statuesque columns of rock to form dramatic scenery for our enjoyment. We visit multiple scenic stops and of course regroup for dinner. We seem to always eat plentiful on these trips – yummy! (Maybe a little grape juice in big glasses too!) Pram and Lucia Oen find a picture of their distant relatives to pose with at the lodge! DAY 4 : Morning arrives too early for those of us walking
to Sunrise Point. It is FREEZING! Djun Leflang has brought along the M&M blanket to keep us warm as we await the sun. Chris Mewes is wearing shorts among the ski jackets and gloves in true Californian style. As we wait, we have fun amusing ourselves with Keith’s traditional dawn shadow people pictures! The rocks become ablaze
Forever views at Bryce Canyon National Park
in a kaleidoscope of hues over the amphitheater once the sun peeks out of the horizon! Well worth the lack of sleep! After breakfast, we begin another spirited drive and head off to Escalante! Nice quaint stop for lunch at Hell’s Backbone Grill with our pre-ordered meals. This group never lacked on food! It is always entertaining to randomly sit with new groups at lunch and dinner and find out more about our Porsche families. Djun and Lucia discover their families are both from the same small town in Indonesia. Chris Sobchik has taught Lucia’s and Pram’s son while substitute teaching. I did chuckle when someone told my brother he really needs to become part of the Porsche family and get a Porsche. They had no idea my brother is responsible for my interest in Porsches! He has had just about every car you can imagine, including his 1967 Porsche he has owned since the 80’s! Not that I can keep track, but between he and his wife, they are in double digit numbers of Porches they have owned! Yes, what we learn about our traveling group! Maybe I chuckle too loud, because our nick-name giver of the group, Lisa, labels Steve Chuckles the Clown. She was fantastic at popping up with nick names for all. My favorite was Inspector Gadget for Pram! Anyone that knows Pram can appreciate that one! Every time we turn around there was some amusing new toy in his hands…we even get cool aerial photos from the hovering drone that unfolds from Pram’s gadget pack! I am not sure whether Troop Master or Captain America best describes our leader! On our way to Red Cliff’s Lodge in Moab, we encounter many adventures and amazing roads! Somehow, maybe because I am literally hanging on to the roll bar of the topless Spyder, I have become the pivoting photographer of our travels. I soon have Pat Renga and Lucia following my lead and snapping pictures hanging from their Cabriolets! Now, I know many photographers who take some amazing photos of cars in motion; but correct me if I am wrong, I think they stand stationary while taking the picture!...or the car has slowed to a crawl to get that feeling of movement. We, on the other hand, are not motionless, far from it, and neither is the car I am trying to capture. Even with a valiant effort….there are a lot of blurred photos! But they look fantastic without my glasses on! Luckily it’s a numbers game; if you take enough images, a few manage to turn out! Maybe I need to invest in some type of stability attachment for the camera!

Pando summits Utah’s Mighty 5 with OCR.
Now for those of you that have never been on a Porsche road trip (if this is you – what are you waiting for?) you definitely have some mojo going on with the drivers and their car position. Some drivers are very comfortable being the trail car and catching any stragglers; others have to be in the front, or at least behind our troop leader, Keith, and his fearless partner, Lourinda! The road to Moab was one of our favorite drives. The juices were flowing and definitely a little competitive in the car position jockeying. The two Steve’s, soon to be named Steve Squared, are undeniably in a little competition. After hanging back to take photos, Steve Foster was causally picking off the cars one by one getting back in the front of the line. But Steve Eguina will not give up his position as he sings along to Lisa’s Spice Girls Greatest Hits. He must be too caught up in the lyrics, because Bam! Larry and Steve are passed in one swoop by the Spyder. Now there is only a lone black 997 Turbo S between the Spyder and our Captain’s blue Streak ahead. I don’t immediately recognize the driver. My brother and I are wondering who is driving at such remarkable speed in such tight formation. We inch up and discover an intense face ready for any Formula 1 race! We are both in amazement, as we discover the driver is Pat Backus. Did I mention Pat celebrated his 88th birthday the night before? This man is awesome. We are on day four of many, many miles of extreme driving and he is as good as it gets! Something for us all to strive for when we reach our 80’s! Cheers to Pat’s first class driving ability! Very entertaining character to converse with too! Somewhere during the spirited drive along UT-12 & UT24, we pull over onto the amazing Larb Hollow Overlook. This dramatic vista offers panoramic views in all directions. The scenery along the roads to Moab changes dramatically from bright reddish/orange hues to a starker duller landscape.

During the stop, we discover that Warren’s car has a flat tire. How many people does it take to analyze the situation? A true testimonial to the lack of spare tires in our newer cars. Obviously, this is when a picture is worth a thousand words! Since AAA was not an option in this remote area and we didn’t bring along any full size spare tires, it was hysterical to watch how many people it took to inject the leaking tire with green slime (aka alien saliva acid) for an instant roadside fix. You would never know this sealant has been around for years listening to all the input Jay gets to get his car back on the road! I am getting dizzy watching him drive first clockwise in circles, then counterclockwise just to mix the slime up! After pulling into town, Jay tries to find a tire store to repair the wheel. The service tech says “We don’t have a lot of those kinds of tires on our farm tractors!” I would have liked to have seen them trying to torque the center locked wheel with
their feet off the ground! The tire was fixed for $47 and a promise to “rip out of the parking lot” after it is repaired. We continue on multiple roads to US-191 to our day’s destination in Grand County at Red Cliff’s Lodge. Can it get any better than this? We have our own individual cabin suites! We get to enjoy three sunsets with the Colorado River rushing past our patios and horses grazing in the corrals by our cars. This spot is highly recommended! As a bonus, we are just a short drive to Arches National Park for our next adventure.
DAY 5 : In the morning we visit Canyonlands, Upheaval Dome, Green River and Grand View Overlooks. We enjoy our lunch at a dramatic overlook at Dead Horse Point. The view below is spectacular. We can envision Thelma & Louise flying off to oblivion in the final scene of the movie filmed at this location. There are so many memorable moments of our adventure, too many for me to remember. Ron and Chris were enjoying the hot tub after another “leisure” day. The lady next to them remarks, “There are so many people at the lodge driving Corvettes!” Ron politely informs her that they were the Corvettes of the German variety, sometimes known as Porsches! I missed the 4:30 a.m. departure for the sunrise at Mesa Arch, but decide to check out the sunrise outside our cabins in the early dawn. I grab my camera and discover my Spyder has been mysteriously toilet papered in the middle of the night! It turns out the Utah Mighty Five Group has developed a new and improved toilet paper car wrap. It is currently for sale on-line exclusive to all PCA-OCR members. After noticing red lipstick kisses on both side mirrors, we decide to run DNA on all the guys on the tour to credit the innovators of this hot new product!
DAY 6 : is another leisure day with so many choices. The majority of the group does a fun run with Enstrom Candies as a destination. This is a four generation old fashion candy store with delectable confections! Ron & Chris venture off on a Jeep tour. Lisa, Steve Foster, and I go mountain biking! What was I thinking? Moab is known for its amazing Shadow figures at Sunrise Point.
mountain biking, so how could I miss this opportunity! We ride our rented bikes to Dead Horse Point, which is part of the Intrepid Trail System towering some 2,000 feet above the Colorado River! We enjoy breathtaking views of the Canyonlands area. This ride was way over my experience level, but luckily I only fall once and finish the summit with just a scraped knee and bruises. Afterward, we somehow manage to fit all three of us in my Spyder--Matterhorn style! At the end of a very satisfying, but exhausting day, we break up into small groups. Eating and sipping on wine, we enjoy the river below our patios while we share the day’s adventures.
DAY 7 : On Day 7, we have our most spirited drive along Interstates 70 and 15. We are getting close to testing the max speed limit on my Spyder! The turbos (Chris, Pram, etc.) in the group have a slight advantage, but the Spyder performs flawlessly, despite the extreme wind noise! I do not even think about pivoting around and taking pictures! However, I do attempt a very shaky video of Keith’s car in front. We arrive in St. George to enjoy our last evening as a group. We stay at the Inn at Entrada which consists of amazing residences on a golf course with our own garages! Like I said,K & L do trips right! We laugh during an evening of comedy at the Amphitheater. I think Doug, Theo, Steve Squared, and Lisa were partaking in lemonade a little too much. Mmmm…. I wonder why? DAY 8 : Some of us are off back to the OC in the early morning,
while others decide to spend one more day and enjoy more rocks! The rock formations in St. George don’t disappoint for remarkable backdrops. Thanks to the GroupMe app, the “Utah or Bust” comradery continues even after the last caravan. I just read a recent post from Gabe telling Laura they found her next car, to match Pumpkin, a pristine orange 356! Too bad it comes with a hefty asking price! We head for Home Sweet Home, but are feeling blessed after the incredible journey we shared with our Porsche Family. We are thankful for the wonderful weather, empty roads, amazing cars, abundant food & drinks, laughter, stunning places, new friends, reuniting with old friends, photo bombs, and Troop Master extraordinaire organizer and his partner! The only question that remains is when and where is the next K & L trip?

For the Love of Porsche Story by Morie Hively Color Photos: James Shen
I just bought my last Porsche and at age 81, I plan to enjoy it to the end! Though I’ve just joined PCA-OCR, I’m not a “newbie” to Porsches. My ownership history goes back to 1958 when four of my buddies and I bought Porsche Speedsters. Mine was a 1957 Red and Black. All of ours were stock issued and we enjoyed touring and rallying all over. It was truly a memorable time of great friends, great cars and great adventures. I finally sold mine in 1963 and purchased a 1963SC sunroof coupe because my wife needed the larger interior to take the kids to school. Next, we moved to Palo Alto with a 1966 912; unfortunately, it was the worst Porsche I ever owned. Minor and major problems prevailed. In 1971, I went to Circle Porsche and bought a new 911T Targa. It was the best Porsche I ever owned!! 118,000 miles with one valve job, “Old Blue,” as we called it, restored my faith in the breed. In 1977, I purchased 20 PANDO | July 2017
a 1975 911S sunroof coupe. Other than a bad experience with the “heat-a-lators,” it was a great car, but had poor paint and clear coat, and required repainting. In the meantime, I bought my wife a 1972 911E Targa. It was a real creampuff. In 2002, I purchased a BoxsterS. It was superb handling of any Porsche I ever owned. The Boxster S was Black–onBlack with tiptronic. It was my first automatic, which in this traffic, is a necessity. If you’ve never driven a midengine Porsche, you have missed out. Well, at the old age of 80, I decided there was one more bucket list item – another Porsche. So, in February 2017, I traveled to Alabama and purchased a 2006 911 Carrera S Cabriolet with 25,000 miles on it. I made a great purchase with this car. I had it totally serviced, updated the sound system and added new Michelins. By the way, I’m always looking for a reason to drive it and will run any errand my wife needs!
I read the article on “Driving a PDK” equipped Porsche, and it was really interesting. This is my second Tiptronic and I really enjoy the option of either paddle or drive shifting. You know, in areas like Los Angeles and Orange County, there can’t be anything worse than being in miles of bumper-to-bumper traffic, let alone trying to clutch and shift constantly. So, I don’t mind sacrificing a little power for the cause! Well, that’s my Porsche story. In between all of these, I have owned over 80 cars, several Corvettes and many collector cars. I am looking forward to the many great PCA-OCR Club events! Oh, and one last thought – maybe God won’t take me because I told Him I had to have my Porsche up there too! EXCITING TRACK DAYS In Belgium and Germany Story by Paul Friedman
During a vacation which included
a tour of the Porsche factory and the Porsche Museum, Paul Friedman, 35 year PCA member, had the opportunity to participate in a track day at the Formula 1 track in Spa, Belgium, plus two days at the world famous Nurburgring in Germany. The track days were arranged by Ron Simons Racing and included outstanding instructors. Paul says he doesn’t necessarily consider this a “once in a lifetime experience” just in case he decides to return and do it again!

You
may recall the June 2017 Pando introduced PCA-OCR member Tony Napoli’s passion, involvement and consistent support as a volunteer Business Advisor for the Automotive & Transportation Academy at Valley High School in Santa Ana, California. Tony had previously paid and brought many of the students to two PCA-OCR breakfast meetings where they mingled with PCA-OCR members, enjoyed looking at member’s Porsches in Original Mike’s parking lot and explained their program and individual automotive career goals. Coming full circle, on June 8, 2017, Marcia Salans and Dick Sartor were invited by Tony to attend an inspirational luncheon at Original Mike’s saluting the graduates of the Automotive & Transportation

Academy. Individual graduate accomplishments were showcased and a number of monetary scholarships were awarded. A highlight of the luncheon was Program Founder George P. Heidler’s wife Shirlee and son George P. Heidler,Jr. in attendance. George’s words of encouragement included a retrospect of his father’ humble beginnings working in a gas station, sharing with the graduates they can create their own positive careers with the skill set they’d learned. This was echoed by Program Instructor Mr. Saul Garcia who also stated his commitment as a continued personal and professional resource even after graduation. It was a great afternoon and terrific example of supporting today’s youth, tomorrow’s leaders and giving back to the community.

Fridays with OWEN and Our Love of CARS!
by Dan Benson
28 PANDO | July 2017
“Fridays with Owen”! It’s often that I find myself
feeling like a little boy playing with cars again!! Only now I have someone that loves cars as much as I do!! Owen is our 2 year old grandson who my wife and I have the pleasure of spending with every Friday! He is the 9th out of our 10 grandchildren, and is currently the one that is absolutely crazy about cars. I think Owen has the car bug a little worse than I did at his age. He arrives at our house at 8am on Fridays, and his first words are “Cars” and Keys”. That is my cue to get the keys so he can pretend he is driving. We then have to start the car so he can listen to the sweet sound of a Porsche 993, Macan S, or the nostalgic ‘67 VW cab. His eyes always get big and says “Wow”! When we are done with the ‘real cars’, we go back in the house and start playing toy cars! He knows all the names of the “CARS” movie characters. When nap time rolls around, Owen looks at my phone and says, “CARS”. That is my cue to YouTube the CARS ride at Disneyland. Attached are pictures of Owen checking out his choices. Which one would you choose? Owen always goes for the ‘96 red 993 cab. Just like Owen, I have loved cars as far back as I can remember!!
When I was a small boy, I was either playing with toy cars in the dirt or on the carpet. I would line them up by color, or make very cool slalom courses in the dirt. When I was over the age of 10, I was building model cars and planes. I loved displaying them in my room. I was forever fantasizing about the day I could drive. I counted the days and often sat in my dad’s ‘55 Chevy and pretended I was driving. Eventually, sitting in the driveway pretending, was not cutting it! My friend Jack and I took it to the next level! We would often push pop’s car out of the driveway late at night to see if we could get that “2nd gear scratch from that ‘3 on the tree’”. (Never did get caught!) I don’t recommend leaving the keys laying around. When I was 16, I passed my driver’s test on the first try and purchased a white ‘62 VW. (I could not afford a Porsche). However, Red brake drums, Porsche rims and hubcaps helped make my VW standout a little. I spent every penny on that car; custom paint, carpet and new seat covers. The next step came in 1964 while getting together with two other guys, we started the Newport Beach
Volkswagen Association. We thought it would be really cool if we were sponsored, so all three of us went into Chick Iverson’s office (a local VW dealer) and asked if he would sponsor us. (We were unsure what that meant at the time). The VW dealership was across the street from the crab cooker in Newport Beach. The VW craze exploded in the ‘60’s and lasted well into the ‘70’s. I held the office of club president for many years. Those years hold some of the best memories of my life. We had caravans to Irvine Park, Hollywood, Big Bear, Parks and local main streets in the OC. We also started “VW Drag Days”. I pulled a first place in the stock 40 hp category. Fun times!! In the late ‘60’s the draft, Vietnam, and drugs became part of our culture and changed many of our lives. Sadly, for some of us, the VW club had to be put on hold for a few years. Upon our return from visiting Uncle Sam, ‘Drag Days’ had turned into ‘Bug-Ins’ and the club had changed. Or was it me that changed? The next chapter was marriage, which meant larger cars. I had to have a 1965 VW transporter, 23 window for hauling around the kids, and a 1962 356 Porsche. A 1965 Red Cab 356 followed, and in between, at least a half dozen other bugs. Well, fast forward to 10 years ago, I joined the Orange Coast Region of the Porsche Club of America (PCA) with my Red Cab 993 with tan interior. Most recently, my wife had her A-3 diesel recalled, and Audi was kind enough to give us 22k for it. We owned it for 6 years and put 106k miles on it. We felt like we made out. So, my wife needed a new ride. She now drives a 2017 Macan S. The car is so fast and nice!!! It’s nicknamed the “Tiger”. Here is a picture of my current garage. Sadly, the Macan pushed the 1967 VW cab out of the garage. PCA-OCR has been awesome. We love looking at all the cars on the 1st Saturday of each month at Original Mike’s in Santa Ana. My wife and I attended the Time Line event in Lake Arrowhead, Orange County rallies and the back roads to Temecula. See you first Saturday of the month. Maybe one day you will meet Owen! Life is good! Porsche (There is no substitute!) July 2017 | PANDO 29

Cone Zone Update by Rob Greene / Photo by Gary Labb
Thank you to all who have participated in the previous cone zone series. We hope it has added to the enjoyment of the Breakfast Club meeting at Original Mike’s. We’ll continue color exercise, model types and different types of equipment. A special thank you to everyone who provided ideas for this third color zone series.
The plan for the monthly Cone Zone themes follows: • • •
• • • • •
July: Red, White, and Blue August: All Cabriolets September: All fixed rear wing Porsches (includes whale-tails, duckbills, Tequipment, aftermarket, GT-2, GT-3, auto-crossers etc.) October: Any Porsches with 15” – 17” diameter wheels November: Any Porsches with 18” diameter wheels December: Any Porsches with 19” diameter wheels January 2018: No Porsche Alley Cone Zone – Attend the OCR Brunch! February 2018: Any Porsche with 20” and up diameter wheels
Cone Zone Themes
We hope July 2017 - February 2018 is self-explanatory. For July, anyone with a red, white, or blue Porsche can park in the Cone Zone. What better month to show off the topless group than August? September should provide a lot of different looks, from earlier Porsche whale tails to au currant GT-3 and 4 wings, original or after-market. Then the multitude of Porsche and non-Porsche wheel types displayed in OctoberDecember 2017 and February 2018 for all to see. I hope we all continue to have fun with the Cone Zone. Don’t forget to check the Pando for any schedule revisions.

RICE’S
Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice
The 992 next generation Porsche 911 Are the news leaks true? The ‘leaked” 2020 911 images show a slightly refaced 911 or should I say “991”or, 992? The 992-generation Porsche 911 is still a few years away, but testing has already begun. What It Is: The next-generation Porsche 911, internally called 992. While it retains the trademark rear-engine layout, it represents a major step forward, compared to the switch from the 997 to the all-new 991 in late 2011. The styling of the 911 is treated in an evolutionary manner, and for the casual observer, it will be difficult to tell it apart from the current model—particularly given the camouflage on these test mules. The brand’s many fans, however, will find it easy to spot with the slightly altered proportions, the new head and taillights, the wide rear spoiler, and the wider track. If looks mean anything, it looks terrific! And, seems that the 911 may never end whether the engine is air/water/ or a mystery system in work? Or a midengine, rear-engine, and who knows, they may try a front engine in it? Is the “911” large enough these days? Either way, this is a fantastic car, and one we just can’t seem to get enough of.

In point, The July Road & Track 70th Anniversary issue, is one to have. I have been critical of automated cars for some time and I have to go back to an earlier comment that these cars are, after all, are: “AUTO-MOBILE-S”: automated mobility. And I have to consider the systems we have now from what it was in my early days. Imagine trying to start my old 1950 Ford flathead in winter. The best probability of a successful start was, pump the throttle 2 times, pull the hand choke out all the way out, then push it back in about 1/8th of an inch. Pray, and twist the ignition key We do NONE of that these days. We give it no thought. No need too. And I would not change that for anything. I like the idea of the new 911R and anything that lets an owner become more involved, more of a driver.
those who pay dearly to have such a car. Calling a new 911R or a new or 20 year old F1 McLaren an “automobile,” is almost sacrilegious. Somehow, “Car” connotes something different from the normal sea of transport vehicles. And we dearly love our cars, our Porsches. One story done by Sam Shepard’s interview and ride with Alois Ruf and his famous Yellowbird CTR: Whether one may like it or not, Alois Ruf and his CTR saved the 911 from demise in the 1980s. It was almost miraculous! And the story is there. One comment I have used, and see it again, is that Ruf Automobile is more like the Porsche AG back in the 1950-60 and early 70’s. Alois and his men and women LOVE the 911, and have made a livelihood from enhancing the potential of the 901911 design since the mid 1960s. The new Road &Track is a great read.
July’s Road & Track has numerous articles to make this very point, and July 2017 | PANDO 35

Technical Notes:
am glad to report that one of our members has successfully completed a major repair to his 911SC, and got everything back together and running as it was intended. This is an amazing accomplishment besides his professional practice to undertake the time and patience to understand and do his own 911 work! I hope his story appears in PANDO soon. On the 911-930 electrical problems I have reported, I must report for safety sake, the following: I have written about routine maintenance of the Porsche electrical system of the 911-912-928-930-914, etc. The German fuse system was a fine, and simple to understand system when the 911 was new and powered by smaller alternators and electrical systems. From 1974 on, that all changed. For unknown reasons, Porsche just added wiring on top of the existing wiring systems and greatly over-loaded the fuses, relays, and electrical systems. In point: servicing a 1977 930 turbo, installing new fuse strips, new fuses, all 21 of them, tensioning the fuse spring ends, and insuring the small pointy end fuses are in as much full contact as this is possible, and seeing my best friends 1977 turbo FRY one new fuse strip again! That fuse strip was replaced, carefully, with all new fuses, etc., and after some small drives, he had a fried 16 amp fuse again. Not burned to fail, but overheating to the point where it melted the fuse contact terminal and discolored the fuse itself tuning it blue
36 PANDO | July 2017
and melting the casing of the Made in China ‘round relay.’ I helped him get his turbo home and sit as it is now. However, when I got home, I looked over my all new fuse relay system with C-2 WEHRLE ‘box’ relays, and see my fuel pump fuse like his, fried-again! Fuse discolored and terminals blue and base starting to melt, and that was from a 15 minute drive! I am now finishing a project to replace the entire fuse and relay system front and back with later Wehrle ‘box’ flat blade plug in relays and all ATO (blade) fuses as 964-993-996-997 front and back. It is not just a good idea, it is now a safety necessity. We answer comments, questions, and differing opinions. Godspeed

PCA-SDR is hosting a multi-Day tour to the Sonoma area. October 21 - 29 2017
You do not want to miss this unforgettable journey through the best California countryside. Join PCA-SDR as we take a week-long tour of the best wine country in America: Sonoma and Napa counties. It’s been over 10 years since we’ve toured up there and it is time to do it again! We will caravan through some of the most beautiful roads in the state as we travel to and from wine country, followed by terrific driving tours and other adventures of all kinds during our stay. Mark your calendars: The tour will begin on Saturday, October 21, 2017 and return to San Diego on Sunday, October 29. Lodging for all 8 nights is included in the price and as well as four group dinners and three group lunches along with a tour of Hearst Castle. Santa Rosa will be home for half the week, which is an easy drive to many of the best wine regions California has to offer: Sonoma Valley, Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Knights Valley and Anderson Valley. In addition to wine, you will find Redwood forests, the phenomenal Pacific coastline, and numerous small towns to explore. The second half of the week will be in Napa Valley, the most famous and arguably the best wine country in all of the USA. The Carneros wine appellation is also right next door, and the delightful town of Sonoma isn’t too far either. World class restaurants, world famous vineyards and amazing views await you here! Every day there will be an optional driving tour in the morning (this is a Porsche Club adventure, after all). Come along with the gang; or skip it to sleep in, go to the spa or beat the wine tasting crowds. Whether you choose to explore the local roads or not, afternoons will be free for wine tasting or whatever may interest you! The cost of the Weekend is $2699 per couple. (Single drivers, please contact me.) Price includes the tour, 8 nights of lodging, three group lunches, and four group dinners and the fabulous and rare twilight tour of Hearst Castle. Space is extremely limited. Please put down your deposit NOW by clicking on this link: http://msreg.com/WineTour (There is also more detailed information available.) The $500 nonrefundable deposit is to secure your spot. Balance of registration fee is due on or before 8/1/2017. Registration fee is nonrefundable due to hotel reservations booked in advanced and planning purposes. Should you need to cancel, you can transfer your tickets to someone else who is willing to take your place. (There is sure to be a waitlist for this event!) Notice: This event is now sold out.
