PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Barry Michaels

70 Years of Porsche and the Best Is Yet To Come. changes made throughout the last 55 years. Continuous improvement coupled with innovation has been the common thread in the success of the iconic 911 and the brand. A year ago, I had the opportunity to participate in a consumer preference research study focused on the 911. While I can’t exactly judge where the 911 will be in ten years, I’m confident it will be better as measured by most if not all benchmarks, regardless of the power source. Horsepower options in the study started at 500 HP and ranged up to 1,000 HP for a street version of the 911. It’s hard to imagine that would translate into useable horsepower, but I have every confidence in the engineer’s ability to figure it out. That said, more horsepower doesn’t always translate into more enjoyment. Allow me to refer you to Rob Sass’ editor’s note in the April 2018 issue of PANORAMA, where he compares the satisfaction derived from driving his 73hp 914 versus his 415-hp 996 TT.

P

orsche celebrated its 70th anniversary milestone on June 9th with a unique festival – the world’s first Sportscar Together Day, held at local Porsche dealers and at the Porsche Experience Center. I hope you were able to participate in the celebration of this special milestone. While I have loved all of the models produced by Porsche, I find It absolutely amazing how easy it is to recognize the common DNA of a 1963 911 with a 2018 911, and to view the incremental

In 2014 PCA celebrated its 60th anniversary, and it seems to me our club is and has been aligned with the Porsche philosophy of continuous improvement. The core principle of bringing together Porsche owners in a congenial and collaborative environment remains, yet most aspects of our activities are larger, more refined, and better executed than in those early days. We strive to raise the bar on what we do and how we do those things, and there have been ample opportunities to enjoy your car in the company of fellow enthusiasts at the region, zone and national levels. The key place to search out future events is on our website, supplemented by the occasional e-mail blast and listing on our mobile app. Thus far this year we’ve had numerous autocross and

DE events, social events and tours to the Pechanga Casino, Northern California, and the Central Coast of California. Last month our annual Concours brought together approximately 100 Porsches and their owners from several PCA regions in coordination with a beer garden. In addition to our routine social and driving events, the summer and fall seasons offer events worthy of special mention. July kicks off with the annual Porsche Parade, the big event for PCA this year is being held in the Ozarks. While the format of the Parade essentially remains the same each year, all Parades are unique given the everchanging locations and venues. Monterey Car Week and Concours D’Elegance runs from August 18-26, including the Werkes Reunion West and Rolex Monterey Sports Reunion. The Rolex event will include a Porsche corral and hospitality tent for Porsche Owners. In September the PCA Treffen Banff will be based at the “Castle in the Rockies” (aka Fairmont Banff Springs), which will be a high demand event. Rennsport Reunion VI will be in Monterey September 27-30 and is not to be missed. In October we’ve scheduled a 3-day central coast tour to Hearst Castle, and will include the expected visits to vineyards in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. I encourage you to embrace as many of these events as possible.

Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington

PORSCHE

Cars With Soul

by Gui Bernardes, published 2017 by Crowood Press, Ramsbury, UK. As a 356 enthusiast who bought his first Porsche in 1959, and still has the Porsche he bought in 1963, I am somewhat disappointed that this book is not all about 356s like the one shown on the cover. Instead, it is a comprehensive discussion of a whole collection of Porsche models, from the 60K10 Berlin-Rome racer of 1938-39, (recently on display at the Petersen) to the 919 racer of 2015 Despite the title, none of the descriptions border on the occult or anthropomorphic. None-the-less, ‘soul’ is frequently attributed to air-cooled Porsches. Witness various comments by Der Maestro, and the “soul” segment in Johannes van Overbeek’s column in the June 1918 issue of Excellence. A first book by a mechanical engineer author who has become turned on to Porsches, this book uses an unusual device – first person-present narration from ‘an atom of Aluminum’ that magically transforms from part of a car body, to part of an engine, even to a driver’s body. This literary technique allows for an intimate descriptive perspective, but is probably a style of presentation that one either loves or hates, or, as in the case of this reviewer, is somewhat befuddled by. Interesting event reports are told as pseudo ‘first-hand’ reports by Porsche cars entered in races, rallys and record attempts over the years. Technical and design history information is presented in conventional fashion. The first-person race reports by the race cars in CARS WITH SOUL do include some fascinating passages about truly historic events in Porsche’s racing history.

The events selected for presentation include some that are indeed classic examples of Porsche’s ‘Giant Killer’ capabilities. There are six chapters ranging from “Looking for Porsche DNA Origins” to “Porsche: More Than Just Cars.” This last chapter deals mostly with club get-togethers and display events, but includes a ‘play by play’ report of the 2015 Le Mans. The chapter designations are rather arbitrary as the entire book is simply a collection of reports of various events in which Porsche cars took part, presented in chronological order and flagged by the event date. Some 45 events are reported on, some of the earliest events getting the most in-depth coverage. There is a very extensive four page index and two pages of footnotes providing amplification and sources for remarks made in the text. Each chapter contains many event stories. There is also a first-person recollection by the author of his experience watching the 1970 Le Mans race on television, which

quickly morphs into a first-person report of its ‘personal’ experiences by one of the cars in the race. All in all, there are many interesting, well written, informative stories about Porsches in action, but some of the presentations and the transitions are a bit jarring to this reviewer. There are many pictures, most not commonly seen which provide unique perspectives on the cars in the events described. In addition to races, the events covered include some ‘historic revival’ occasions featuring cars from the Porsche Museum. CARS WITH SOUL is a hardcover book containing 208, 7-1/4x9-1/2 inch pages on glossy paper with many pictures. As this is written, it is available from Amazon Books, for $28.43. July 2018 | PANDO 9

Treffen Tamaya

2018

Story by Denise Michaels Photos by Paul Novotne & Barry Michaels

The 48th Treffen Tamaya was April 25-28, 2018.

Barry and I have been to three of the four Treffens, and have enjoyed ourselves each time. It was held in Santa Ana Pueblo outside of Albuquerque, NM. This time we drove our Cayenne Turbo S to the event. Barry’s sister lives in New Mexico so we took the opportunity to deliver an antique brass bed and his great-great grandmother’s rocking chair that had been in storage for too many years to his sister. Now, imagine a brass bed on top of the Cayenne! Think Beverly Hillbillies! Both the bed and rocking chair came through with flying colors. Along the way we stayed in Winslow, AZ at the La Posada Hotel. Apparently we stayed in one of two rooms that are haunted. Everything was fine. Winslow is a sleepy town on Interstate 40 (Route 66) and is famous for the song, “Take It Easy,” by the Eagles. A Boxster passed us close to Winslow, and we saw them at Treffen. Their first question to us was, “What was on top of your car”? We checked into the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort and were ready to take in some of the Southwestern culture. As with every Porsche event Porsche cars, food, driving roads, and entertainment are always at the forefront. Treffen Tamaya did not disappoint. We were entertained by Indian Dancers, an American Indian flutist, and Mexican Mariachis. I had delicious Indian bread several times! Barry and I try to sit with different people at each get together. The first evening were Porsche enthusiasts from the Roadrunner Region, the second evening with GPX and Tucson Regions, and the third evening was with Canada and Las Vegas Regions. As we know, “It’s not only the cars, it’s the people.” 16 PANDO | July 2018

As we were leaving the resort, I mentioned to Barry that I had seen the people we had met from Tucson, AZ loading up their cars onto trailers for the ride home. Two Cayenne’s loading a beautiful 356 and a 959. “Wait a minute, a 959?” he said. Yes, a 959! I wish I had taken a picture. Since Barry’s sister lives in Albuquerque we attended Gathering of Nations, the largest Indian Pow Wow in North America; 3,600 American Indians dancing to beating drums! What a sight to see! We took the scenic way home by way of Durango, CO, Mesa Verde, and the Grand Canyon. Our first morning in the Grand Canyon we awoke to 6 inches of snow! Beautiful for almost a whole day! Treffens are held twice a year so if you can attend one you will not be disappointed.

DRIVING SKILLS Story by Larry Moore Photos by Joe Barnet & Larry Moore

Thoughts Related to Race Driving The previous Practice does not make “perfect” - Perfect practice makes for “perfect!” This applies equally to Autocross practice, Time-Trial practice and Club Race Practice. Do not practice your mistakes! One of the most constructive practice techniques I received as a driver came to me one afternoon at Willow Springs International Raceway when I was racing with the Porsche Owner’s Club. Surprisingly, it came from a professional motorcycle racer. He was explaining that before he raced he diagramed the track with his “ideal racing line,” over-laid with a series of dots at each spot where he had to change his direction, speed and/or position on the bike and this became his practice template. Then, he disciplined himself while practicing on the track, to execute the called for maneuver at each spot perfectly before adding more speed to his pace. This is, at least, a very good perfect practice technique. Translated to a race car, start at a pace where you can execute perfectly at each spot. As you accomplish perfect at each spot, add more speed the next time around and execute it perfectly again. This practice requires real discipline and self-honesty! If you mess up a spot DO NOT blow it off by telling yourself, “I won’t do that again.” Rather, back off a bit the next round and nail-it, then move on. What you are doing is removing a few hundredths here and a few hundredths there which improves your lap times and you will be practicing perfect and not your mistakes. 20 PANDO | July 2018

Simple Rules to Live By: 1. SIN #1 is to carry too much speed into a corner. Two much speed is easy to identify, assuming you are alert. Missexecuting at one of the “spots” on the race line means, almost for sure, you are going too fast. Back off a bit, slow down and get it right! 2. Exiting each stand-alone corner accelerate to the outbound track edge. (The exceptions being “traffic considerations,” “kinks” and “zig-zags”) If you exit a corner and your full acceleration + drift does not carry you to the outbound edge of the track, you are most assuredly not getting onto the accelerator early enough in the corner. In most cases you should be done braking and, on the accelerator before you reach the corner apex. The sooner you start accelerating the more “sling shot” affect you will have exiting the turn and, assuming you don’t leave the track outbound from the corner, the faster you will go down the following straight. 3. Drive the track around the corner. Do not focus on the track just ahead of your car. Keep your eyes scanning the track at least 50 to 100 yards (think football field) ahead. That means “around the next corner” usually. Your peripheral vision is better than you think; use it. Drive well ahead and let your peripheral vision deal with the in-close stuff. Practice this and you will find that nothing that happens up ahead will truly surprise you.

4. Never miss a chance to learn from your competitors, particularly the faster ones. Work at following them into each corner and try to gain on them through the corner. Corner and Track Analysis (Figuring out the Ideal Line). Because the Corners are where “quickness” is achieved or lost, you should always analyze each corner separately before you start driving and then put them together as you practice. A simple analysis such as follows will help. Corner shape: There are basically three shapes of standalone corners, A. Continuous radius, B. Increasing radius, and C. Decreasing radius. Each demands a slightly different technique; learn them, apply them, and practice them. Corner function: I highly recommend you analyze the track layout, particularly a track new to you, to identify the inherent function of each corner. An easy way to start this study is to identify each corner as Type I, Type II or Type III. Type I: Is at the beginning of a significant straight, Type II: Is at the end of a significant straight, and Type III: Is a corner closely linked to one or more other corners that require(s) the establishment of a rhythm. The Type I requires emphasis on acceleration to maximize the slingshot exit to achieve the maximum entry speed into the following straightaway. The Type II requires emphasis on latebraking to carry the speed built up on the previous straightaway as far into the

AUTOCROSS ??

corner as possible. The Type III corner requires a treatment in conjunction with the adjoining corners or road surfaces that together produces the quickest overall passage. Identify and practice. Corner surface dynamics; factors affecting your car’s grip in the corners. First, the surface cross-sections, usually referred to as “Camber” are: 1) “Positive camber” or “with camber” where the surface tilts into the inside of a corner, 2) “Negative camber” or “off camber” where the surface tilts to the outside of a corner, and 3) “Zero camber” or “flat” where the surface is basically level side to side. Again, identify and practice. Second, refers to the lineal “topography” of the track. The three basic shapes are 1) the “crest” of a hill or mound that causes the suspension to “decompress” or “go light,” 2) a “depression” that causes the suspension to “compress,” and 3) a level surface, whether level, tilted up, or tilted down. Your traction/grip on these various surfaces can vary greatly. Identify and practice.

Finally, the “track surface itself” is a factor. How slick or grippy is the track surface? This element is a constantly changing variable as it literally changes throughout the day by the affect of weather, dust, dirt, dropped oil or coolant, debris and/or just air temperature changes over the course of the race day. As you practice, think about what the status of the surface is.

Summary:

As you practice, analyze every car length of the track because all these factors affect the performance limits of the car and should be studied, understood and practiced achieving quick lap times.

Most non-racers have no idea of the complexities of driving “quick.” And, even fewer really understand that to drive quick, perfect practice is required. And even fewer practice “perfect” because it requires real honesty and focus. It’s not easy and you really cannot do it casually. Perfect Practice is not achieved by aimlessly driving around the track. Oh! By the way, spinning off the track does not make you cool or a hero. It announces to all, “you don’t have it together” and/or “you made a mistake,” and neither is good nor cool. Willow Springs International Raceway, February 2004, (L to R) Greg Franz, President of Porsche Owner Club and Larry Moore, President, PCA-OCR enjoying a Race Day at WSIR. (Photo by Larry Moore)

If you are not able to achieve 95+% of the capability of your car at every point on the track, you clearly need more perfect practice. Perfect Practice is all about improving your performance, not about beating your buddy or looking cool. Regarding “the Race,” assuming the cars in the race are evenly classed and assuming you can consistently achieve 95+% of your car’s potential, you will be very competitive. July 2018 | PANDO 21

O

n a recent Saturday afternoon Marcia said, “tomorrow at 6:30 a.m., we’re going on a mystery breakfast drive, so plan on taking your CaymanS, follow me in my Porsche and we’ll caravan to the secret destination!” Sunday at 6:30 a.m. sharp, we left Huntington Beach, hopped on the 405 north to the 605 then the 210 and surprise, wound up at the Santa Anita Racetrack! It was a beautiful sunny morning and we had a nice breakfast at Clocker’s Corners which opens from 5:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Sitting comfortably outside, we enjoyed watching the thoroughbreds being exercised and we met lots of friendly people, trainers, owners, horse enthusiasts and tourists. The San Gabriel Mountains create a wonderful, picturesque backdrop for Santa Anita, so rev up your Porsche and make the trip. There’s lots to see and do, including the free Seabiscuit tram tour, several eating venues and of course, horse racing! Check out www. santaanita.com for full venue, dining, event and season information. Just like our Porsches “they’re off and there they go!”

Porsche Passion Story and Photos by Sande Robert

“Sande, get what you want. I mean, how long do you think you’re gonna be driving?” My buddy, Fred, coached me over the phone from his home on Oahu. I am turning sixty this year, and although I’ve had a string of nice, sensible, leased vehicles, my heart has always been captured by a Porsche. I am a pirate, having lived in places such as Hawaii and Nantucket; and for the last year, home has been in Newport Beach. Just my luck, Newport is the epicenter for sales of Porsches. They no sooner arrive on the salesroom floor, then whisked away 28 PANDO | July 2018

by folks with a great deal of spare pocket change making price negotiation almost non-existent. For seven months I became friends with my local sales rep. A patient man who educated me and kindly let me drive and drool over the art in his showroom, while the voices in my head battled: Uh, oh, no, you’re NOT thinking of buying one of these. Oh, yes I am. Oh, no you’re not. But I’m in love! “You have champagne taste on a beer income,” my mom’s voice chimed in from memory. I could see her scratching

her head. From childhood, I had a croweye for beauty, and sometimes, well, often, that beauty came with a price tag. “I don’t know why you’re such a perfectionist,” would often be the rejoinder to her observations. I’m most definitely not in the pursuit of perfectionism. As an abstract painter, some of my best breakthrough moments are inspired from mistakes and whimsy during the process. Purist is more my leaning. I’m drawn to authenticity, beauty and performance born of craftsmanship and history.

I confess to acquiring an appreciation for such things as Leica cameras and Manolo Blahnik shoes. I possess only one Leica; however, several pair of Manolos live in my closet. They are not flashy badges of status for me, they are Bauhaus form and function wrapped up in the history of Mr. Blahnik, whose first inspirations came from making little jackets for the lizards running around on the grounds of his childhood home in Brazil. Confections of fabric and rhinestones and soft leather which have never given me a blister, and they make my legs look as well as they can through his talent for engineering. Freddie doesn’t know a lick about Manolo Blahnik, but few can surpass his knowledge of Porsche. He has more street-cred than anyone I know. Thirteen Porsches to his resume with four in his garage presently. A lifetime of passion.

For months he tutored me in the history of these cars, from Volkswagen to 356 to the Macan. Most importantly, he encouraged me to follow my heart. He held my hand from afar as I special ordered my very first Porsche, and soothed my fretting mind after seeing the panoply of colors and choices at the Luftgekuhlt show in nearby Torrance, wondering if I’d made the right decisions: GT Silver with Espresso interior and gray stitching.

“What’s her name?” he asked enthusiastically. With a range of monikers from Pumpkin to Tabasco in his stable, past and present, this is a happy topic. “Oh, Freddie, you know they name themselves. She’s Stormy,” I couldn’t believe I was saying this from the driver’s seat of my very own 911 991.2, hand-crafted, small-batch work of art on wheels when she arrived last week from Germany. Love finds a way. July 2018 | PANDO 29

Pebble Beach

Story by Rob Alen Photos by Rob Alen & Gary Ambrose

For Porsches

It

is turning into a Pebble Beach for Porsches, except there are no guys in blue blazers or straw hats, but baseball caps and t-shirts: it is Luftgekuhlt, a celebration of air-cooled Porsches.

Luftgekuhlt means “air-cooled.” It also means an event that started out as kind of a simple backyard affair and has quickly become big time with major sponsorship and even an official hotel for out-of-towners. Mystery surrounds when and where it is going to be; the venues are off-beat and interesting. For this year’s Luftgekuhlt 5 this past April, hundreds of Porsches were spread throughout Ganahl Lumber’s new facility in Torrance. Special Porsches and Porsche People were there, like Vic Elford of Targa Florio and 908 fame; Le Mans and Daytona multiwinner Hurley Haywood autographing his new book.

From southern California, Follmer drove everything: F1, Winston Cup, Formula 5000 and finished third at Le Mans in 1986 in a Porsche 956. Special, and without fanfare, what appeared to be Dan Gurney’s 1962 Porsche Formula One 804 car he drove to win a nonchampionship race at Solitude, just outside Stuttgart. Gurney passed away in January. For all the Porsches out on-the-street, each one at Luftgekuhlt is different, with the personal touch of their owner. Some painted and polished to perfection, some honored for their clappedoutedness, and some with the road scars deserving respect and

RICE’S

Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice

IS PORSCHE TESTING A NEW GT2-BASED RACING CAR? FINALLY! The straight line speed is on a completely different level with this GT2-based racer. Armed with slick tires, an offensively large rear wing, the rear window inserts (read: air jack-equipped) from a Cup Car, and a body kit with even more cutouts and canards, it’s safe to assume this Porsche is some test mule for what could be an upcoming racing car. -Porsche internet It’s been twenty years since Porsche has campaigned a turbo 911-based car in any serious capacity, but with most of the new lineup of 911s sporting force-fed motors, there’s a good chance this one is a move in that direction. This camouflaged Porsche sounds the part too—with a wonderful bark accompanied by the telltale whooshing and popping that should, ironically, silence the naysayers. From internet

If you haven’t seen a factory campaigned turbo-charged 911 on track, you will be in for a major surprise. Rear motors in fat tired 911 -WITH skilled piloting, is an awesome sight to behold. Finally, a REAL Turbo Porsche 911 on track; hopefully, with “POPs” “BANGS”“WHEEZZZES” and the obligatory flame tail or too - always lets you know it is breathing hard!

Now in the real world: News from “ICE.” RELAX, this one means: “Internal Combustion Engine.” According to SAE Engineering, there are further future studies for cam & cylinder-head-less ICE’s, diesels with super high pressure Digital Direct Injection, Compound turbocharging, where two small turbos boost into a larger single turbo, Alternate, renewable type fuel sources, “Mixed Drive” with small engines powering

one or two generators, and motors built into the wheels and batteries. (Ferdinand Porsche invented this “mixed drive” in the very early days.) Just for a moment, consider the I.C.E., the same basic ones we’ve been using since the 1890s, and now since twin turbocharging is so commonplace, it doesn’t even get a “Turbo” sticker, let alone a nice July 2018 | PANDO 33

gold or silver “Turbo” badge anymore. Turbocharging is just another part of a car. This is exactly as so many predicted it would be back in the 1980s.

UP-FIXIN item: Just where do you place Jack Stands on the rear of a 911:

Also consider switch-able fuel sources is making even more of a comeback now in some off-road studies, along with some uses in heavy duty trucks as well. And the U.S. Navy is using bio-fuel in some F/A18 Carrier Air Groups. Here’s an unusual one, the new Cadillac will NOT have its new V-8 induction system up on top of their engine as all V-8s have had since the 1930s.

Now, the Caddy’s exhaust will flow out of the cylinder heads and UPwards and into the “valley” (in-between the two cylinder heads) of their new V-8. This is being done to fit two turbochargers and two Catalytic Converters in the valley itself.

Fig.2. Safety standing on a 911. For a 911-912 & 930, right here, as shown. And I like to lower the Porsche just a bit onto the stands, THEN, lightly push the Porsche back and forth sideways, to insure both jack stands are setting FLAT on the floor. Think about that before you crawl under your heavy car, whatever it is!

All this being done to make better use of that post-combustion intense exhaust heat which will spool up the turbochargers sooner, and feed the “CATs” with a more robust heated exhaust and use that even more efficiently. This also is supposed to have a shorter warm up time, (no doubt) and then that unused heat will rise up and out so as not to roast the entire engine and front of the car, as all other engines have done for the last century. We’ll have to wait a bit to see how that one works out. For sure ICE still has issues as do the publicity grabbing so-called, “totally nonpolluting energy efficient all electric cars.” All I can say to that is, “Really?”

34 PANDO | July 2018

I’ve gotten some responses from PCA’ers as to, “Is this for real or just more hype and publicity?” So where are we going with this electro, rob-o car interests? It is just more of what some label as our “Cali-crazy-fornia hype.” Further on down there’s an editorial that’s been around a while and deserves more than just a passing thought or two.Especially if

you are planning to drive and love having a real Porsche to drive in the future. But here is one thing we cannot ignore, whether we move about in a combustion powered diesel, gasoline, ethanol, or used donut oil in a piston, fuel cell, gas turbine, or a super-duper battery, even in a skateboard, all these powered sources generate heat.

Think about all that heat mankind generates. Where does it go? UP obviously. All mechanics and engineers go through basics to begin their training, and get the lectures about “efficiency losses.” And just how efficient is your choice of engine? And how efficient are those battery cars? What we do know is, with the exception of hydro electric power, all your energy sources generate heat. That heat comes from consumable wood, coal, oil, gas, geo-thermal, nuclear, or even sunlight farms. All of these sources generate heat to boil water, make steam, turn a generator, yadda, yadda, yadda. So the new Cadillac will put their heat up on top of its new V-8 engine and as it rises, that heat vents out into the atmosphere. Thinking about this just seems a bit funny as everything really is AIR-COOLED, or for us of German Porsche persuasion: “luftgekuhlt.” We know Porsche is experimenting with electro-hybrid cars as well, if only to see for themselves how this technology may be used efficiently and usefully. If anyone can show that to be dependable, reliable, and efficient and also A FUN DRIVING EXPERIENCE, I’ll bet on Porsche.

Fig.3. 911 GT2 RS-the one for us normal drivers. It’s just an image that never seems to be tiring. We answer questions, inquiries, and comments. TRY US! Godspeed
