Any resemblance to the car of your dreams is purely intentional. It wears its heritage proudly on its sleeves. And fenders. And roofline. Experience the Porsche Macan S. A 340-horsepower twin-turbo V6, PDK double-clutch transmission and active all-wheel drive with Porsche Traction Management for maximum grip in varying driving conditions. All standard. The Macan S is built around our defining belief that every drive should be unforgettable. And every car should be a sports car. Dream fulfillment begins with a test drive. Porsche. There is no substitute.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Barry Michaels

Fuel Needed. You can have the best car on the planet, but without fuel that car isn’t going anywhere. Similarly, our club requires fuel, albeit of a more precious source – your time and energy. PCA and the Orange Coast Region are fueled by volunteers. We have all benefited from the time and efforts contributed by numerous fellow members, but just like the fuel tanks in our cars, our club needs to refuel from time to time and we need your help in topping off our tanks. All of our activities could benefit from your volunteering, but in particular we could use a qualified member to work alongside Gary Labb with the intent to take over the club’s social media duties and responsibilities. Gary has provided outstanding service to us for many years but hopes to simplify his life over the coming months. Please contact Gary directly, or any Board member, to express your potential interest. Similarly, we need a member with an advertising background to assist with the recruitment and retention of Pando advertisers, which fuel our ability to produce and distribute our Pando magazine each month. For those that attend our breakfast meeting, you may have noticed a recent hiatus from the “cone zone” preferred parking activity. Rob Green has done a great job historically in keeping the activity going, but he’s requested we transition that activity to another member. Again, please step forward to lead or assist with these activities. I am confident your participation will pay off through greater satisfaction from your club membership. Speaking of volunteers, many thanks to Norm Follis, Steven Fairbanks, Bob Kahn, and all of the many volunteers that assisted in organizing and conducting our 49th annual White Glove Concours. It was an outstanding event. We had volunteer

participation and entries from 8 of the 14 regions in Zone 8, as well as outstanding participation by the 914 Registry, honoring the 50th anniversary of the market introduction of the 914. Larry Moore provided both fun and challenge for navigators and drivers alike through his “ad infinitum” gimmick rally, proving once again his ability to create family discussion among members long after the end of an event. June 30th also marked our second autocross event of the year, receiving rave reviews from drivers for the course layout and large number of both practice and timed runs. By design, our AX sponsors and organizers are limiting the number of drivers to facilitate a highquality driving event. Sponsors provided drivers with coffee and bites in the morning as well as lunch. This month several OCR members will participate in the club’s annual “big event,” Porsche Parade, at the Waldorf Astoria Resort in Boca Raton, Florida. While registration is closed for the 2019 Parade, please save the dates and join us at the 2020 Parade, based at the La Quinta Resort June 21st – 27th. Later this month, June 28th, Larry Moore will lead a “Lunch on Top” tour, a “fun-run” on the back roads of Riverside County to Palm Springs, then ride the PS Aerial Tram up the mountain to enjoy lunch (no-host) in the Pines Restaurant. See our website calendar section for more details. Plan for the future, but live in the moment and enjoy the Porsche life style and experience.

T

he Universal Studio back lot was the stage for Luftgekühlt 6, and it was a stunning success.

The tickets were limited and the crowd was huge. It took us 1 ½ hours to park, get on a bus and arrive at the site. Fortunately, my companions, Monica, Barry and Denise Michaels kept me calm and entertained during the wait. Once off the bus, the scene was absolutely amazing with hundreds of air-cooled Porsches all carefully arranged in the classic movie studio street settings. These sets were primarily New York, Boston and typical Philadelphia city street scenes. Each Porsche was perfectly placed in the right spot. The color, type and age of each car had obviously been planned to enhance the setting. As an Art Director of Commercial Photography for most of my career, I realized it could have taken days to place the cars and months to create the plan. After a pleasant lunch break at the court house, we walked over to see what we thought were the last cars we’d see, only to realize that guests were walking up a hill to another complete western street set with 50 - 60 Porsches on display! On returning to the main streets, we found several cars displayed in an enclosed state. A James Dean-type Porsche 550 Spyder was featured on a pedestal and three endurance racers were displayed in front of a 100 foot painted backdrop, the real “Hollywood” stuff. Leaving the stage, we found another square with 30 perfect 914’s displayed together. I was thinking of offering my 930 as I had not seen any, then we found another block that had 60 -70 cars with about 40 of them being 930’s, oh well.

Fantastic is the only way to describe the day if you like air-cooled Porsches and classic movie settings. If Luftgekühlt 7 is there next year – plan on getting your ticket early!

Story by Jim and Laurie Bergman Photos by Karen Zapata

Porsches and Planes

Jim’s passion for airplanes started while he was at Long Beach State back in the year of Woodstock. He took flight lessons at Long Beach airport and got his private pilot license at age 20 before he even graduated from college. After his Long Beach State “49er days,” Jim became a pilot in the USAF stationed in Honolulu from ’72 - ‘77. Jim flew in Project Corona, a satellite recovery mission. After a tour in Hawaii as a C-130 aircraft commander, Jim pursued a career in commercial aviation. As a DC-9 First Officer, he flew for Hughes Airwest. The 80’s era introduced airline de-regulation, and Jim had a total of 4 airline marriages; Hughes Airwest, Republic, Northwest and Delta. After 32 years of flying, Jim retired as an Airbus A330 Captain. In 2001, Jim acquired his North American Texan (AT6), which was a WWII advanced trainer. He lovingly restored “Old Yeller,” and has flown in countless air shows, memorial flyovers, and given hundreds of rides to folks. Jim’s interest in Porsches began in 1983 when he bought a 1973 911 T which he had to sell due to the birth of new baby boy. Although Jim’s need for speed and passion for Porsches was put on hold, he never let go of his first love.

Brave Laurie doing incredible wing walking stunt.

18 PANDO | July 2019

So, after his 32-year career in aviation, he bought his own retirement present from Walter’s Porsche in Riverside, a 2009 Carrera S. Jim relates “Porsches and Planes,” to the highly engineered Porsche product in many ways due to the similarity of the T-6 aircraft, from the complete instrumentation panels to the critical control systems, that both require and reward a precise driver and pilot to get the maximum performance from these machines. In 2006, fate would bring him together with a long-lost flight attendant from Hughes Airwest who he hadn’t seen in twentyfive years. Jim couldn’t help but ask her, “Laurie, where have you been all my life?” she replied, “Well Jim, you’ve been married and I’ve been single.” Jim took off like a Porsche in 0-60 mph in 4 seconds and began an immediate courtship, with the “One Who Got Away.” Laurie always thought she would do well marrying a pilot because of her love for flying, adventure, and travel. After 3 years of dating, they got married and have recently celebrated their 10th anniversary. Together, they drive the Porsche, scuba dive, motorcycle ride, go mountain biking, enjoy classic car shows, wine tasting and travel the world. While Jim prefers flying in the front seat of his AT6, Laurie prefers aerobatic flying outside the plane. She is the skydiver and wing walker in this family. Jim on the other hand says he sees no reason to jump out of a perfectly good plane. Apparently, opposites do attract!

I

Legend My 1971 914 Porsche

purchased my 1971 914 from George Roy of Long Beach, CA in 1974. He was a personal friend of my dad. George bought the car in 1971 at the Kendon Porsche dealership in Wilmington, CA. The dealership derived their name from the first names of the owners, Ken and Don. The dealership has not existed for many years. Initially, I had the car serviced at DIRO Porsche Service in Harbor City. The name DIRO came from the first two letters of the owners’ names, Dieter and Roby. They were young mechanics who had worked and trained at the Porsche factory in Stuttgart, Germany. After a number of years, Roby opened an Alfa Romeo dealership. Dieter established Lomita 911 Service which is still in business today. I lived in Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach for five years so the car was regularly serviced at the Vasek Polak dealership in Hermosa Beach. Vasek Polak received one of the first Porsche dealerships in America, as he had known “Ferry” Porsche from his racing days in Europe. Vasek Polak would eventually establish The Vasek Polak Family Health Foundation, which exists to this day.

22 PANDO | July 2019

With the exception of the exterior paint, the Riviera Mag wheels from 1974 and a few replacement parts, the 914 is originally equipped. In 1977, my wife, Nancy, and I travelled across the United States in the car. We drove from Newport Beach to Yorktown, VA and back to Newport. We were walking around the British fortifications on the Yorktown battlefield on a beautiful sunny day. Suddenly, the sky darkened and a slight drizzle started. The drizzle turned into a heavy rain and then into a violent hail storm. Nancy, being from Indiana, recognized the weather change as an oncoming tornado. We spent the next several hours in the Yorktown Visitor’s Center basement. Highlight visits of the trip were Denver, St. Louis, Chicago, Washington, DC, Williamsburg, Yorktown, the Gettysburg battlefield, Elkhart, IN, Salt Lake City, Reno, Virginia City and San Francisco. The last stop before home in Newport was wine tasting in Paso Robles. I am fortunate enough to also own a 911 Carrera Cabriolet. See you on the road as we are all driving “Das beste Auto aus Deutschland.”

RICE’S

Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice

Fig.1. ALUMINUM 11 straight Blade FAN

Fig2. ALUMINUM Fan - Alternator HOUSING.

Fig.3. CRACKS in Housing. Images thanks to Sierra Madre Collection.

The Porsche 917 got its ‘golden touch’ in late 1969.

I’ve had 911 & 930 customers with damaged fan-alternator housings, especially the later 1987 and later 911’s. I’ve surmised this is an alloy problem from the factory and unfortunately, they seem uninterested. I’ve tried repairing them. I did have some luck welding a new piece of fabricated magnesium onto a broken off fan blade. However, the later 1987 housings have not been successfully repairable. I also asked some of the best alloy welders I know to try their luck and they tell me it’s a “contaminated metal problem, from the manufacturer,” and SORRY! So, it’s been “go find a good used one. “ We’ve seen in the ‘Porsche magazines’ some ads for NEW ALUMINUM, 11 straight blade fans with new gold finished steel fan hub and all new ALUMINUM Fan - Alternator Housings.

These are not cheap, but now they are available and made in aluminum.

housing. So far there are no replacement fans or housing for the 964-993 Carrera.

The later 1992 -1998, 964 & 993 11 straight blade Turbo FANS are magnesium, silver powder-coated and reliable. The Fan HOUSINGS are cast aluminum with 4 large stators, XXXX are very reliable, look good, and last for a long, long time! However, the 964 and 993 Carrera fans and fanalternator/housings are also troublesome. The Carrera fans have 12 curved magnesium fan blades. The fan HOUSINGS are magnesium and have 23 stator blades. These fans and housings do not have the higher air flow as the straight blade (Turbo) fans do, but they are quieter. Some of these Carrera housings have seen internal corrosion and they distort, misalign, and crack. Often pieces break off and the distortion causes the fan to scrape the

For the 1965 911 & 930s up to 1989, thankfully, there are quality aftermarket parts available and for that, I am grateful. THANK YOU to Sierra Madre Collection for use of their images. July 2019 | PANDO 27

930 Turbo Upgrades (cont’d from MAY 2019)

I left off at the boost indication and using a cut down waste gate spring for lower fixed boost and better driver control. As the factory boost gauge is slow to respond and from my experience, they are not only slow to respond, hard to see while driving, and worst yet, inaccurate. They only show boost pressure, not partial pressure (vacuum). Driving with only the factory boost is ok for a stock unimproved 930, but that’s it. ANDIAL got it 100% right when they stated, “to get rid of that factory clock and get a real manifold pressure gauge, and LEARN TO USE IT.” OVER-BOOST SAFETY SWITCH: (O.B.S.S.) This is a small plastic and metal on-off switch. 930.606.101.00 mounted on the intake by-pass manifold or intercooler on all 1975 to 1994 Turbos. Its purpose is to provide a ground path for the Fuel Pump Relays through the Air Flow Sensor Switch and Relay (yes, it gets complicated.) However, this small and unreliable switch is there to provide protection against over-boosting the engine if the waste gate sticks shut. I can tell you when on a boost run and that switch goes open circuit, both fuel pumps both quit instantly, you will get thrown against your seat belt / shoulder harness frighteningly quick! What happens is the power producing engine becomes a turbo-supercharged AIR BRAKE! Now if one has dialed up boost from the normal 0.75 to 0.8 bar to say 1.0 or higher, this braking is far more severe! SO, ANY UPGRADING OF THE BOOST SYSTEM MANDATES FIRST REMOVING THE O.B.S.S AND PERMANENTLY GROUNDING THE GROUND WIRE: (0.5 cm/ sq WHITE Wire between the engine electrical plug (T-14/#7) to the Air Flow Sensor Relay (A.F.S.R.)). NOW, the white wire is grounded directly to the chassis / body. Now, the Air Flow Sensor Relay still works and now with the key ON, the fuel pumps will not run until the engine is cranking and the Air Flow Sensor Switch turns on the A.F.S.R. Relay. That provides the necessary ground for both Fuel Pumps! That’s a heck of a lot of info, but again, this is why you learn to go by your Bar Absolute gauge. 28 PANDO | July 2019

Fig.6. “GREDDY, Pneumatic Bar, Absolute pressure gauge.

In younger driving days we all learned to gauge our speed with the speedometer. Once we got used to it, the speedometer was mostly used for reference. Boost Pressure is the same thing. Remember to use caution until you get the feel of it.

Jim Poste PCA-OCR is doing a complete chassis, body, engine, and transaxle, rebuild and upgrade on his 1977 930 Turbo. This is going to be my example for a 930 Turbo UpGrade, what to do and why. The why is straight forward as this particular 1977 930 Turbo was owned by a family man and it became a part of their family. They all loved this 930. They all loved to drive it and even loved looking at it. Life changes, and over the years it had been reliably serviced at dealers, then a West L.A. Porsche shop ended their reliable service as the mechanic who knew these 930s, retired. Then a novice tech got to working on it, serviced it, and did some repairs. I got involved as the Turbo owner was now pleading to find anybody who could work on his horribly running Turbo, or find a charity to donate it too! I’m not making that up either. This poor Turbo had terrible problems with low to no power, terrible overheating, and difficult and unsafe to drive. When “Mike” brought his 930 “OH BABY” to my shop, I found numerous problems and knew soon after what the problems were and told Mike, “Forget giving it away, it will just need some work but it’s not a disaster.” Imagine a grin from ear to ear!

Fig.7. C -2 Turbo inter-cooler 930.110.330.01 with ‘tin’ air shrouding

Mike had done an overhaul some years prior and did some of the things to upgrade his engine (from its puny rated 234 HP), such as the thermal reactors were replaced and installed the commonly used ‘replacement headers,’ which did almost nothing for power but did reduce engine tempetatures dramatically. Emissions were not affected and the lower temps did make more power, even with all the other smog equipment installed and operating perfectly. Additionally, it PASSED all smog checks! Now onto some of those problems. #1 An incorrect C.P.R. installed (Control Pressure Regulator) Ignition Distributor sticking and intermittent seizing, from overheated old grease. There was the old spark plug H/T Wires, and the cold rated spark plugs, and so on. After a week’s worth of work, it ran near perfect. Mike then wanted to make it run even better and faster, and so on. Doing a service and checking valve and valve guides for wear: NONE! Oil filter cut open and checked: CLEAN. Compression and leak down: 2-4% OK. So, looking over everything to do without removing the engine or doing any internal work, we did a few reliability upgrades such as the upgrade to later Oil Pressure Chain Tensioners and most importantly upgrade to the later bronze bushed idler supports L+R. We also installed the later C-2 Turbo

PS Some of the air ‘tin’ shrouding is popriveted on the top of the intercooler and will be removed to make fit into the earlier engine compartment and under the rear deck / wing.

Fig.8. B&B Intercooler

High / Tension silicone ignition cables (not the wire wrapped H / T wires, that do nothing but cause ignition leakage.) Then, we installed BOSCH FR5DTC spark plugs. Note* (Actually the factory has specified for the 964 Turbo and Carreras everything from a WR4DPO [warm] to a FR6DPO [hot] spark plug. Historically, nothing was ever as cold as the old 1970 911S’s W3DPO spark plugs, and they were specified on all the high performance 911S and all 930 Turbos 19695 – 1989. The W3DPO is a super cold spark plug. The factory just figures you will be driving FLAT-OUT, ALL THE TIME! I know they weren’t kidding as they showed me some of their worker’s 911S with worn down smooth accelerator pedals. JA! But I use the FR5DTC spark plugs with its -5-heat range, triple electrode, mini spark plug, on everything from 1968 911 (normal), ’69 911S’, 2.2 T/E/S, all 2.7s, all 3.0 SCs, 1984 - 3.2 Motronic Carreras, and all 930 Turbos. These plugs love idling, putt-puttputting around town, freeway driving, and flat out. Now for the first and most significant upgrade that is “bolt-on,” this is what we did: #1 INTER-COOLER: This 1977 Turbo never came with an intercooler, which helps explain the measly 234 HP rating. This particular 930 Turbo did have an after-market small, almost mini, inter-cooler installed years ago. It was too small and got no real air flow through

Fig.9. 1986 Factory Header / heat exchangers with a not used (NOISY) B&B muffler.

#2 EXHAUSTS: We removed the earlier exhaust system and installed a stock R.o.W. and later 1986 Turbo Header / Heat Exchanger system and later factory twin exhaust muffler with twin exit tips. This is extremely reliable and has a decent audio signature, and flows much more freely. The original 3LDZ turbocharger was replaced with a Factory 1992 K-27-7200 turbocharger mostly for reliability and cooler discharge air tempetatures.

it. We upgraded to a 964 Turbo intercooler which is a much wider, deeper, and thinner intercooler. It was a bolt-on which also required a bolt-on replacement of the 1975 -’77 intake manifold for a 1978 or later intake manifold. The 1978 intake has a steeper angled throttle mounted flange. Then we installed C-2 turbo intake parts which are fewer, simpler and lighter. We also upgraded the rear deck / wing to a 1978 3.3-liter Turbo deck wing as the C-2 Intercooler won’t fit in the 3.0L Turbo deck / wing. As for power increases, the 1992 3.3 Liter C-2 Turbo engine is nearly identical internally to the 1986 to ‘89 Turbo engine, which is the Turbo’s first Jetronic ‘computer’ system, and comes with a Catalytic Converter and O2 sensing. These 1986 - ‘89 3.3L Turbo engines came with 282 HP!

#3. FUEL ENRICHMENT: We installed one of my After-Burner Fuel Enrichment kits with a Split-Second O2 monitor. For basic fuel enrichment the earlier 1978 – ‘79 USA and R.o.W. black iron Fuel Distributor is used as it flows much more fuel, and is necessary for a performance Turbo engine with C.I.S. fuel Injection, AND the engine is adjusted to specifications for smog. Passes OK, and yet has more fuel available during acceleration and boost.

When the C-2 3.3 Liter Turbo came out with nearly an identical engine only, it had 320 HP! Most of that is from a much more efficient cooler air charge.

This engine has run powerfully and reliably for 20 years and now its 2019 and another serious “one last ZTO and Upgrade.”

The “C-2Turbo” intercooler for the 1992 3.3L and 1994 3.6 L are the same and they are not terribly difficult to find, just expensive and for the record, B&B Exhaust and Headers makes a near identical intercooler, modeled after the C-2 intercooler for far less money. Now, this engine has optimum inter-cooling, and any further upgrades will now benefit in higher output with this cooler charge air going into the engine.

** If anyone is interested in making your Control Pressure Regulator increase fuel flow for acceleration and boost by up to 30%, you need to e-mail me, and I will resubmit the article I wrote back in 1995 or so, on how to do it yourself.

Godspeed,

Be in Boca for Parade 2019! Summer 2019

We’re lucky to be the Host Zone for Parade 2019 – and we’d love to see you there! It will be held at the Boca Raton Resort and Club, a Waldorf-Astoria … and the room rates will be very reasonable for this luxurious resort. In early 2019, we’ll have complete details, and registration for the hotel and for Parade will be open then. So, plan now for your 2019 summer vacation to be at Parade in Boca.In case you’re not familiar, it’s a beautiful part of Florida: on the Atlantic, just north of Fort Lauderdale, with July’s comfortable sea breezes and summer temps in the high 80s. At 2018’s Parade, there were about 900 Porsches and almost 1,800 attendees. It took 40 year-round Volunteers and more than 700 on-site Volunteers to make it happen. For 2019, we’ll need 100’s of Volunteers as well, from all over the country, and there will be an official Volunteer Registration process. But if you’re interested in helping on the front end, by providing local expertise and help with planning Tours, Rallies, and all the other events, please let your Region Leadership know now or email zone 12rep@pca.org. Stay tuned for more information, but check out these sites now:
