PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
This is the month for everyone to get those cars clean and shiny. As many of you know, I am a firm believer in driving your cars, unlike many of our Concours purists. My 2006 997 Cab S just passed 120k miles, the RS America has not seen a public street for years (only race tracks), and I have been driving for 33 years an original 66 Mini Cooper. The effort put into cleaning these vehicles to get even remotely close to 100 points is really incredible. Over the last couple of years, I have entered the judged class, and spent a small amount of time cleaning the car (one week after work, probably 15 hours or so), good thing my car is Red and in the special competition class. I find it much easier to win a class when you are the only entry, hey a win is a win after all! All that said, and after putting in a fraction of the work others put into getting their cars clean and ready for a Concours event, it is tough for me the first lap out on the track knowing that all of that work just shot
down the drain. It is easy to understand why those perfect100 point cars live in vacuum sealed bubbles and take months to prepare, kudos to all of you! Something more exists, motivating us to keep our cars presentable. The number of quick clean products I have used in a year is astounding, constantly spraying, wiping, standing back, buffing, and of course smiling. It seems to really be all about me when it comes to how happy I am when my car is clean. Parking it in just the right light, a shine so brilliant that you can see the reflections of others smiling as they pass you on the highway. The gentle curves and lines of the car compel you to just give it one more wipe, there really is nothing like it… For all of us car enthusiasts, an afternoon in the garage, tunes playing, our favorite beverage close by, wiping and caressing our loved vehicles just melts away the noise of life. For me it is these moments, and of course the four hours before the car is dusty again, that are just fantastic.
Our club Concours is the PERFECT place to show off your handy work and affection for your Porsches. We have made it very easy to participate at levels that are comfortable for you, wash and shine, judged, full concours (please reference the website announcements page for complete details). The venue is simply un-believable, in Dana Point overlooking the harbor, come on… how could you possibly avoid the temptation? Did I mention that hundreds of other like-minded OCR enthusiasts would be there as well? At my core I am a racer and that is really one of the areas that bring me great joy with my RS America. However, I would not miss this event for the world. It is a fun party attitude gathering surrounded by gorgeous vehicles and you simply must attend in some capacity. Many thanks to Norm, the OCR Board, the City of Dana Point and countless others for bringing this special event to all of us. See you there! Greg Lush People. Porsches. EDITOR’S NOTES projectiles as the seeds were ejected at speed into the vehicle. And he also relates that this carried on for the entire time he owned the car. So there you go, can anyone top that? By the way I had always thought Jay an intelligent person so I never included “Vega” and Mr. Warren in the same sentence. I asked him if the stories about this fabled flop by GM were true and he responded that if anything, they were understated. As an exciting ride he said it had no equal as he never knew when he put the key in the ignition what was going to happen, including ignition… ask him to tell you about dropping the gas tank one evening in a lonely parking lot.
Leather up and dress for the slide not the ride
Midway through the midway month of the mid-decade year. Take a little time get out that Porsche and get into gear! The year is passing by, you know how time is supposed to fly. Get off the sofa, don’t be a loafer. Head out the door, put the pedal to the floor. Your OCR friends would love to meet you, out on the road.
Just How Bad Can It Get?
Well my last month’s comment on getting surf wax melted all over my car dash with lingering consequences was definitely topped by friend and fellow club member, Jay Warren. Jay relates that a friend of his dumped sunflower seeds into the air conditioning system of his Vega inadvertently. Immediately upon turning on the air conditioning blower he was pelted with myriad small

At Pando that is just not a euphemism it is for the most part a necessity. Our new cover layout more or less demands that we use photography oriented in the vertical rather than horizontal. In the iPhone and Windows photo app world this means “Portrait” NOT “landscape”. Please keep this in mind as you submit photos that you might wish to be considered for the front cover of our magazine. A landscape layout photograph means we have to do some cropping that may have odd results in comparison with the original intention of the photographer. So please don’t stop sending in photos in any orientation just beware that the vertical or “portrait” is going to stand the best chance of making our cover.
Misteaks Will Happen
Okay it may surprise our faithful readers to learn that your Pando staff can make an error now and then. Unfortunately we re-ran the members anniversary data from April in our May issue. So, the best news is that the April people got a twofer….And the May people got a “nofer”….okay we will correct that in this issue. Please accept our apologies and remember that “the quality of mercy is not strained as it droppeth from the cup”. The last big error we had at the printing offices of the Pando was when some of the printers devils broke into a barrel of ink thinking it was Cabernet. Luckily we could spot the culprits by the stains around their mouths and cheeks, thus harsh and swift punishment was ensured. So too we now ready the pillory for this latest band of churls.
Porsche Soap Opera “La Comedia no est Finita”!
Hot on the heels of all of the other news I have been relating about Porsche’s family saga comes the news that Ferdinand Piech, the Grandson of Ferdinand Porsche himself, has left the Board of VW Group. This came after a majority of the Board sided with Mr. Martin Winterkorn, who stays at the helm of Volkswagen as CEO. This management drama began when Mr. Piech announced that he was going to distance himself from Mr. Winterkorn, which means that he did not think that Mr. Winterkorn was doing enough to bring VW out of its’ current doldrums. The Board members siding with Mr. Winterkorn, and by extension

Book Review PORSCHE 356: The story of the Flat-Four Porsches Story by Bruce Herrington by David G. Styles, published by The Crowood Press, UK. The year 2015 marks the 60th anniversary of PCA. Since PCA started with 356s, it seems appropriate to reprise the past during 2015 with books about 356s. The intent is not so much to promote these cars to increase their market prices, as it is to promote these cars to increase their appreciation (and perhaps purchase) by members of, say, the PDK crowd. Thus PORSCHE 356 is the second book on these essential Porsches, to be reviewed in 2015. As an author of a book on 356s, Styles is something of a privateer, running without direct factory support, though the Factory supplied some of the illustrations in the book. Like most books on Porsche, the first chapter deals with the youth of Ferdinand Porsche, this time telling a story of creating illuminated ice skates. Considerable attention is given to Ferdinand Porsche’s work history, and the development of the company and it’s marketing program. Interestingly, there is some discussion devoted to the Professor’s interest in aerodynamic design, starting as early as the ‘20s and carrying through to the Formula 2, Single Seat 718 Spyder bodies; a tradition that somehow got lost when the 917 was first developed. Perhaps because this book was written in Great Britain, its discussion of James Dean’s crash is shockingly far from the common American understanding, but it does strongly support the idea of James’ innocence in the accident. No doubt also a function of its British, non-factory origins, PORSCHE 356 postulates
that as many as 100 America Roadsters could have been built (American/Factory number is 12-16), and gives Max Hoffman exclusive credit for conceiving the Speedster (with no mention of Johnny Von Newman’s ‘topless’ Pre-A racer). Several references to Porsches dropping out of races due to “blown head gaskets” may sound strange to 356-DIY mechanics, but early Carrera engines DID use head gaskets. Well illustrated with black & white photos from contemporary magazines, there are also a great number of pen & ink drawings that are spectacular for both their artistry and the mechanical details that they depict. Coverage of all 356 models, their gestation and evolutionary changes are given in detail. Though very complete full page data sheets are included for each model, the thorough coverage of detail changes, which are of such interest to Concours judges and even model identification junkies, are somewhat buried in the narrative paragraphs. Unfortunately, for the ‘history buff’, serial numbers are not given for the detail changes which occurred, not even for the first 356Cs which, shockingly, did not have disk brakes. In accordance with the sub-title, PORSCHE 356 covers more than just the basic 356-356C series. The 912, 914, 912E are dealt with in considerable
detail, Also covered are the 4 cylinder racers, the 550 and 718 Spyders, the 904, the 804/4 Formula 1 race car. Even the 2000GS-GTs (of which only two were made) is discussed extensively, making this book one of the most comprehensive treatments of air-cooled 4 cylinder cars available. Fascinating tables at the end of the text list all 4-cylinder air cooled Porsche year-models (but not detail changes) and associated serial numbers There is also a table of Porsche design numbers through the early ‘70s, including Type 633- “Revision of Studebaker Design”, and 655-”Single Cylinder MoPed Engine”. Other tables provide interesting comparisons of year-byyear specifications for 356 Porsches and their ‘adversaries’ like contemporary Triumphs, MGs and Alfas. There is also a comprehensive index.

Porsche Purists vs Technological Advancements Story by Malcom Balca You remember the good old days (if you are fifty or older), when all of us car buffs could maintain and fix our own cars. Auto shop was a “must” class in high school. I’ll bet there are a lot of PCA members who changed much more than just tires on their cars back then (some still do today). Starter motors, generators, radiators, brakes, differentials, plugs, rotors, tune-ups and even motor overhauls were not uncommon by car owners. As automotive technology advances, car owners reminisce about how maintenance, repair and operational support (MRO) diminishes with each new generation of cars. I am somewhat dismayed when I look under the trunk lid of a new Porsche and you can’t even see the engine…just a row of “fill” caps. Nor can I even change my tire on my Turbo S, that is, if I had a spare, due to center hub locks that require 450 lbs of torque to break lose. On Sunday March 22nd, 2015, the Google sponsored driverless Audi started in San Francisco from the Golden Gate Bridge and without a driver drove 3,500 miles to New York City. Historically, technological advancements have replaced driver tasking throughout history. Beginning with engine hand cranks to start an engine, quickly replaced by engine starter motors…a welcomed improvement. In a performance car our personal driver elation can be distilled down to two things, car performance and driving skill. Every automobile manufacturer is in a horse race to advance their automotive technology to improve economy, safety, reliability and performance…Porsche is no exception. As Porsche owners…do any of you feel
a conundrum of encroachment caused by technological advancements that continue to diminish “fix-it skills” or eliminate “driving skills and/or reduce driver operational support?” The “Catch 22” in a performance car is to know and realize, if Porsche fails to effectively compete and maintain their performance reputation …the essence of why we buy a Porsche will be lost. Within that evolutionary process, it’s a given that driver tasking will continue to be diminished. Let’s not kid ourselves, older stick shift Porsches (fun to drive) no longer are able to compete with newer automatic PDK transmissions, nor can 2 wheel drive cars compete with 4 wheel drive cars and gas fueled cars will no longer be able to compete with hybrid gas/ electric cars…and, in the future, all performance gas powered cars will be replaced by electric cars in my opinion. In the extreme, do we need to fear technological advancements in driver automation that will replace the need for a driver? In the May issue of Motor Trend magazine there is a beautiful example of how Porsche’s advanced technology in the 918 beat and set a new track record at Laguna Seca competing against the McLaren P1. As Porsche owners we all should take pride that a 918 that costs $267,000 less than a P1 and has less horse power than a P1, and the 918 is 347 lbs heavier than a P1…was still able to beat the lap time of the McLaren while setting a new lap time record. Two Porsche technological advancements made the difference. The 4 wheel drive
918 accelerated out of the curves faster than the 2 wheel drive McLaren and the 918’s massive torque has a combined 944 lbs vs. P1’s combined 644 lbs of torque. Tomorrow’s technology in areas such as microprocessors, sensors, GPS, thermal imaging, laser and radar, will obsolete everything we are driving today…in the extreme, we all will become passengers. Taken to the extreme, would Auto Cross be as exciting if you competed with driverless cars that human drivers could not compete with? Would we even want to watch Le Mans or any car racing event if drivers were eliminated? It’s tough to answer that futuristic question. What I’m trying to say is, technological advancements are revolutionizing every aspect of performance, safety, reliability and quality in performance cars. I would never argue that these accumulative advancements are not a good thing. But by analogy, there was something special and creative about making all my toys in childhood, i.e., bow and arrows, tire swings, sling shots, tree houses, and soap box derby cars, etc., that today’s children will never experience with their electronic games. My point is, older Porsche cars enabled and allowed owners to bond with their cars in many ways that a new Porsche owner can’t. I miss the days when I could work on my car and do fix-it things in maintenance, repair and driving operation that are no longer possible. But right now, who amongst us thinks driving elation in a 918 is diminished by all the technology? June 2015 PANDEMONIUM 11
AUTOCROSS CORNER
Fun in the Sun Story by Courtney O’Donnell, Photos by Mike Knudsen
12 PANDEMONIUM June 2015
There is nothing more pleasant than being out in the open air in the midst of spring! We were fortunate to have had a perfectly sunny 80° day at our 3rd Autocross of 2015 at El Toro Fields. The April 26th event had a big turn out, thank you to all who attended. Our events would not be possible without our series sponsor Walter’s Porsche, our series support sponsor GMG (Global Motorsport Group) and our event sponsor Bill Brewster Automotive. Our new course designer, Chuck Bartolon, designed a course that allowed all levels of autocross goers to test the limits of their car and improve their techniques. No matter how many events you have attended there is always a new revelation or limit that is reached from one lap to the next. The intention for each event is to push your car around the corners more smoothly than before and become more comfortable
with your unique car and driving ability. Yes, it can be nerve racking at first, but I have never heard anyone say anything other than good things once they try autocross. Step out of the box, go beyond your comfort zone, test the grip of your tires! New drivers, experienced drivers and all the folks in between can (and do) autocross; enjoyment is not biased, it is for everyone! We encourage families to make this a group event; bring the kids, bring the dog and become a safer driver while having a blast! If you have a state issued license, you are welcome to participate (guardian must be present at all times). I highly recommend that parents bring their new drivers to autocross and allow them to learn the limits of their car, enhance their driving ability and learn how to properly react to certain scenarios (braking, looking ahead, etc.). Autocross is so much more than an enjoyable day once a month. It teaches all drivers proper car control, how to stay calm under pressure, and alertness! All of these factors lead to safer drivers and safer roads for all of us!

How a Porsche 991 got on Grandpa’s Bucket List Story and Photos by David Wright It all started in the summer of 1967. I was a young (and much lighter) graduate from the College of Engineering at the University of Wyoming and the pesky draft board in my hometown informed me that I would be drafted unless I had a draft deferred job. I knew I would eventually end up in the armed services and would probably end up doing something I did not particularly want to do in Vietnam, so I had taken a draft deferred job with the Naval shipyard in Hunter’s Point (San Francisco) so I could ride out the summer and go back to Wyoming to finish my Masters, but more importantly also finish my ROTC program and at least enter the service as an officer (that was a good move, but it is another story – actually a number
16 PANDEMONIUM June 2015
of other stories – I ended up in Korea guarding “Freedom’s Frontier” from the officer’s club bar at 8TH Army HQ in the heart of Seoul - a much better outcome than Vietnam). Not to digress, 1967 turned out to be the “Summer of Love” in SF and I was forced to choose nightly whether to hang out in the Haight-Ashbury district (Fillmore West) with all of my hippie friends or head to Broadway Street where Carol Ann Doda had just begun showing her lovely “Twin 44s” at the San Francisco Condor Club and all of my cowboy friends visiting from Wyoming wanted to go -- however those are a couple of other sets of stories. Yes – I had a beard, wore sandals, sailed around the Bay,
drank cheap wine, dressed like a hippie and sold the Berkley Barb in the Height Ashbury District. Things have changed now, I no longer have a beard. I keep digressing – must be the age. This story is about Porsches. It turns out that a couple of my pot smoking hippie friends with whom I worked with at the Naval Ship Yard, when they were not smoking pot and listening to the White Rabbit on the Jefferson Airplane Surrealistic Pillow album. (Yes -- an actual 33 album), liked to go to Laguna Seca Raceway to watch the cars run. It was the era of the big block corvettes vs those light but very powerful Ford AC Cobra 427s. It was great watching them. I knew a lot about both Fords and Chevys
I saw the car again at the Paramount Refinery here in California where the refinery fellow had been transferred. To my surprise he had restored the car and it looked great.
from my Hot Rod magazine subscription and knew they were the only real cars of the day. The Corvettes and Cobras were incredible on the straight-a-ways and were really battling it out for top gun, however the interesting thing was that these pesky little foreign cars kept eating their lunch on the curves. The little cars had a funny name not well known back in Wyoming – Porsche. It turned out that my hippie friends actually owned a funny little Porsche called a Spyder. It seemed to be set up for racing. It did not have a top or much of a windshield and the inside, except for a roll bar, was all stripped out. The seats were just some pieces of leather with no padding. The silver Spyder was an absolute blast to drive. My hippie buddy offered to sell it to me for $3500.00 but (in my great wisdom of the day) did not think much of the car and kept my ‘62 “stick shift on the column with overdrive” butt ugly, red and white Chevy Bel Air instead. Time moved on – It’s 1968, I know more about Porsches now. I had been studying a bit and had started to realize Porsches were a much more sophisticated race car than I had originally realized. Also, Porsche introduced the 911 Targa in late 1967 and I was in love with the car. However, I had another year of graduate work and was just about to get married, so the possibility of owning one was not in the cards. After finishing graduate
school and landing my first full time job with Continental Pipe Line, I was living in Salt Lake City and my first Porsche opportunity arrived. I pounced – I bought a used red 1965 365 C Cabriolet (black top – tan interior) with a chrome luggage rack mounted on the back. I loved that car, however it had been in the salt and had lots of interesting problems. I kept the car throughout my stint in the US Army and for a few years after coming back to work for Conoco. Then, again demonstrating my incredible lack of foresight, I sold my 365 C to some guy from Conoco’s refining department in Ponca City, OK. Several years later
Then – the great Porsche dry spell set in. Finally after two sons, a divorce, several job changes, several moves, another marriage, a daughter, three sets of college tuition payments, four grandsons and 38 years -- I was back in the game. All those years, a red Porsche had been on the back on my mind and moving up on my bucket list. The moment finally arrived, out of the blue, in May 2013 when I went down to Porsche of Newport Beach (did not know about Walter’s then) and ordered up a 2014 Porsche 911 S Guards Red Cabriolet. It arrived at the end of July 2013. Then – life was good – Joined up the Porsche Club of America, Orange Coast Region, met Monica – got Porsche garbed up (hats, shirts, jackets, socks, watches, belts, shoes, gloves, money clips, posters, more shirts, underwear, model cars etc. – Monica is a dedicated sales person) like all good new members – had my picture taken to be in the Pando, met many nice folks, have had lots of breakfasts, donuts (must be from all of the cops in the club), and have signed up
June 2015 PANDEMONIUM 17
to participate in a number of autocrosses and DEs. On top of it all -- I bailed myself out big time with my wife Nancy. It had been a long time since we had a decent vacation. Then another stroke of Porsche luck happened, I was looking through my Pando seeing if there was another Porsche I could try to sneak into the garage, when I saw the advertisement for The Autobahn Adventures Porsche tour of four countries in Europe. Perfect – she wanted to travel and I wanted to drive fast on the Autobahn. Absolute best trip of our lives --- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Two weeks in Europe in a 2014 911 4S Black Cabriolet. Wonderful hotels, wine, fantastic driving opportunities in the Alps and the Autobahn (hit 153 MPH),

did I mention wine – very relaxing and is everything you will ever want in a vacation. In addition, Mark and Tina Trewartha, the organizer/owner of Autobahn Adventures, especially Tina, are a blast -- but hard on your liver, did I mention wine. The moral of this story -- buy your Porsche now and do not wait until you are old. Porsches are life changing and good for your health.

Good Morning! Story by C.L. Jarusek, Photos by Gary Labb You wake up on what looks like a beautiful Saturday morning. It’s early, the sun is already shining in your window and you are wide awake. Sure you could lay in bed, read the paper, have a cup of coffee, but that is for those cold, rainy days. Your wife is hungry, your son is wanting pancakes for breakfast and your stomach is growling a bit. Then you remember looking in the Pando and seeing the photos of the Porsches and Pancakes event at Woody’s Diner in Newport Beach the fourth Saturday of each month. It’s still early enough to get the family going and make it to the 8 a.m. gathering in the parking lot. You had been thinking of asking some of the members about what kinds of tires to buy for your car anyways, and really want to tell somebody about the movie you thought was great last night. Let’s get the gang going… Porsches and Pancakes is typically attended by about 50 members, their families and their friends each fourth Saturday of the month. Yes, we do have families there and encourage them to come and meet some other

Porschephiles. As stated above we meet in the parking lot (second traffic light south of PCH off of Newport Blvd, on the inland side) and discuss anything and everything that may come to your mind. At about 8:30 a.m. we head inside to have breakfast. If it is a little chilly or rainy outside (Porsches run well in the rain), we may head in a little earlier. The restaurant is prepared for us with one long table and all the surrounding booths. You order whatever you want for breakfast and you pay separately, so no hassle with breaking down the bill for a large group. If you have plans at 9 a.m. this might not be your place to eat, since we inundate a fairly small restaurant, but you do receive your meal hot off of the grill. If you don’t have the time to stay, stop by and visit anyway, you are always welcome. There is no meeting conducted and this is strictly a chance to get to know some of your fellow Club members. We have had many members make this their first event which they have attended with the Club. We also welcome friends who may have Porsches and are interested in looking at getting to know the Club. You don’t even need to just think about coming to Porsches and Pancakes, if you wake up early… I even set my alarm. I think you will enjoy the food and the people. As a reminder, the event is advertised in the Pando and an email reminder is sent out the week before. See you at our next Porsches and Pancakes event! June 2015 PANDEMONIUM 21

I usually don’t get into this stuff as there’s enough on TV soap operas, but this concerns the man who put PORSCHE on the world map. As Garey Cooper mentioned in his Editor’s Message, it seems Ferdinand Piëch has resigned from VW Gruppe in disagreement over management issues. Piëch, who resigned as chairman of Volkswagen over the weekend, sowed the seeds of his own demise by reneging on a deal to support CEO Martin Winterkorn and secretly plotting to oust him instead, according to sources close to the VW board. Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/r-vw-boardmembers-demanded-piech-go-after-learning-of-secret-plot2015-4#ixzz3YWvGw8aJ Technically Piëch mandated excellence in every part of Porsche and that is why Porsche is what it is today. Knowing his abilities, do you think Piëch is done yet? Any bets?
washer. The belt felt tight –but the lack of shims was simply tightening the belt against the pulley halves. However the belt soon wore, became loose, and the loose belt ultimately pulled the outer pulley against the fan’s oblong hub. Consequentially the wear against the oblong outer V- pulley half also wore a rounded groove in the fan’s oblong hub to the point of not being able to later adjust the belt tension. Some shops just tell you to replace the fan outer Pulley -Eckler’s $20.00, and the Dome Washer for about another $12.00. Some technical types will suggest you REPLACE THE ENTIRE FAN ASSY - for a 1974 911 this is $949.99 + tax and +shipping!!! (-Eckler’s 2015 catalog) But that is ridiculous, so long as the fan’s magnesium blades are not damaged.
The Fix
A 1974 911 owner found during replacement of the Alternator that the fan adjusting nut was tight but the outer pulley was slightly loose and the drive belt was slipping.
I have repaired the rounded oblong hub by simply MIG WELDING the grooves up and then filing them flat to match a good (new) outer pulley half. The outer pulley half is replaced along with a new dome washer and a new nut-which come with the new alternator.
The 1974 fan itself (1965-1989) is made-up of two parts: a cast magnesium-alloy hub with 11 fan blades and an attached riveted on inner steel pulley half.
Because the fan was removed from the engine to replace the alternator, several preventative things were done at the same time to insure reliability and trouble free service.
The outer V-belt steel pulley half is installed with shim washers to space the outer fan pulley in closer or further away to adjust the belt tension. Tech specs call for 4 shim spacers to be installed between inner and outer pulley halves to start the adjustment procedure.
ALWAYS DISCONNECT THE BATTERY when working on the alternator & wiring!
1974 FAN HUB WEAR
At least one extra spacer shim is installed on the outer pulley and fan hub, after this a dome washer goes over the shim – spacer, and finally the nut. The nut holds everything together. The problem with this is the 1974 fan pulley was wearing on the fan’s outer pulley hub. I have seen this due to improper adjustment of the shim spacing for the inner and outer V-pulley halves. The nut was over tightened which deformed the dome 24 PANDEMONIUM June 2015
Finding the fan difficult to remove from the alternator which is typical, I placed the fan-alternator-housing on a work table and set it on two wood blocks. The plastic tail cone should be removed while the fan-alternator-housing is being removed from the engine to remove the wiring after the battery is disconnected! The first item is to ensure all alternator nuts & washers are removed from the housing. Then set the housing on the wood blocks (see image), fan side down on the wood blocks. Spray penetrating oil on the exposed screws and also the alternator where it sits in the housing.
Then I use a medium mallet and brass drift to tap the alternator down and away from the housing. Be gentle! The alternator housing is thin aluminum. Tap the alternator out using an ‘across the star pattern’ to gently ease this item out. With the alternator removed, the housing normally has some bit of corrosion on it, as this is a magnesium piece. First I drill out the 6 ea. mounting holes for the alternator with a 7 mm drill. Then, using a safety razor blade, I flat scrape the mounting surface for the alternator. Both the bottom face and the side are also scraped until the alternator can be set in place firmly and easily with a thumb and finger.
Figure 1: Fan Housing alternator holes removing powder coating form
Now I can fit the fan onto the alternator with a woodruff key. This must fit totally free, so I start by using very fine black metal sand paper (1200 grit) to clean the alternator (fan) shaft. I Remove any “crud” until it shines. Then I use a jeweler’s file to clean the fan’s key way groove so that a new woodruff key slides fully into the groove -and can also easily slide out. Then I ensure the fan will also be an easy, free fit. With a damaged fan hub, I simply weld the worn grooves with a M.I.G. Welder and flat file them to fit with a good outer pulley.
Installation A new Alternator with internal voltage regulator will require some small modifications. These are to cut out a small opening for the internal regulator to fit and be cooled by the fan’s airflow. I also upgrade the tail cone by cutting off two of the cones mounting tabs.
Figure 2: Powder coating removal #1
This allows the alternator to be installed and pulled into the fan alternator housing with the mounting nuts & spring washers, allowing a full metal to metal contact –and to not have to tighten the alternator against the plastic tail cone tabs in between. However, I first install all 6 washers and nuts and snug them ALL down firmly. Then I loosely fit the fan-alternator housing on the engine, while also fitting the tail cone over the wiring. After this, I correctly fit and secure the wires. Next, I remove the 3 nuts and washers that fit under the usable tail cone mounting tabs. I then install the tail cones, securing washers & nuts.
Installation Guide Tips
Secure the alternator-fan-housing with the MINUIMUM torque on the fan housing strap screw socket M8.0 x 40 or 45 mm length.

a. Put some grease on the alternator wood ruff key before installing it on the shaft. Slide the fan on the alternator shaft to insure that it will fully seat with the woodruff key in place. b. Install 4 fan pulley spacers and fit the fan belt. Holding the belt against the fan (inner pulley) slide the outer pulley over the fan hub and hold it against the belt. THEN, slide 1 spacer ring over the outer pulley and hub, then slide on the dome washer, then thread the nut onto the shaft, -all this while holding the dome washer and outer pulley in place. IT IS EASY FOR IT TO SLIP OFF THE HUB. c. Tightening the nut and outer pulley half correctly is done with the FAN HOLDING TOOL, -The one in your 911 tool kit. - You really need to have one to do this correctly! Figure 4: FAN weld fill Outter Pulley errosion.
I use the fan holding tool to turn the outer pulley, belt, and fan -while HOLDING THE NUT STEADY WITH A BREAKER BAR AND A SOCKET ON THE PULLEY NUT. Do not turn the nut, until reaching the final torque of: 28.9 to 29.0 Pound feet. Actually by turning the fan tool (& outer pulley and fan), you are tightening up everything evenly as you apply near equal tension against the outer pulley as you turn it against the shims and fan belt. This way you do not warp the outer pulley half as you rotate the fan, everything tightens evenly! The expensive 911SC (& 930 Turbo) outer V-pulley is very sensitive to warping!
Figure 5: Fan weld FIILE smooth
If you fully tighten the nut and the belt is loose: you then must undo the nut, dome washer, outer shim, outer pulley half and remove one shim, and repeat the process... If the fan belt feels too tight: Can you push the belt inward at least 8 -10 mm (¼-⅜”)? If not, it is likely too tight. I prefer a slightly loose belt as when the engine is fully warm, the belt tightens up -a lot! d. After several drives, recheck the fan housing strap bolt’s torque –after the engine cools.

What is BurgerBahn? Story and Photos by Gary Labb What began as a dream of Past President Gordon Williams to have club members enjoy dinner together and display their cars, finally took off with the opening of Woody’s Diner # 2 in Huntington Beach. Our first dinner/social event took place on September 8, 2011. Yes, another club “foodie event”, joining our two monthly breakfasts and our monthly “donut” event. Gordon came up with the name BurgerBahn after abandoning our original name of “Thursday Cruz Nite”. I know some of you have heard it referred to as “BurgerBarn”, but let me assure you, whatever it is called, it is enjoyed by many of your fellow members. We never know how many of our fellow Porsche lovers will show up on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. We’ve ranged from just two of us (thank you Malcolm) to over 30, but we do know that those that show up are there to spend a couple of hours conversing with other Porsche lovers and enjoying dinner.

We actually believe we’d have more participants if our Orange County traffic didn’t keep many members from making the trek to our location at Adams and Brookhurst. We do have participants who come in from Los Angeles, Whittier, San Clemente, and Dana Point. I guess they must leave early in the afternoon to get there by 6. I, of course, like it when we can meet in the parking lot prior to dinner and I can get some photos of the fantastic cars and people who represent our club. It gets a little difficult during the winter months as darkness has already come by the time we show up in the parking lot. If you aren’t doing anything on the 2nd Thursday of the month, please come and join us at the next BurgerBahn. Porsches. People. Food. What else does a Porsche lover want? Yes, drinks are available for those who wish to partake. Additional photos are available on the PCA-OCR Facebook page at https:// www.facebook.com/pcaocr.

PCA-OCR Goes to the Fountain Valley Classic Car & Truck Show Article and photos by Gary Labb
This will be the second year that PCAOCR is helping sponsor the Fountain Valley Classic Car & Truck Show. This show benefits the Fountain Valley Community Foundation, a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization (www. fvcommunityfoundation.org). This year’s car show will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2015, between 7:00 am and 3:00 pm, at the Fountain Valley Sports Park, within Mile Square Park, 16400 Brookhurst Street, Fountain Valley. The show’s founder and coordinator, Pete Haak, came to the March 7, 2015 Breakfast Club Meeting to invite PCAOCR members to enter the show in Class 21 and form a Porsche Corral for everyone to enjoy their beautiful Porsches. While the show has “Classic”
in the title, any year vehicle can participate in the show. Please join us in the Porsche Corral. We will be putting up a PCA-OCR recruitment booth next to the Porsche Corral. This is a good family friendly show with lots of beautiful cars of all years, makes, and models. This year Pete added an additional class, class 23, for classic emergency vehicles. There will be plenty of food and drinks available as the Fountain Valley Summerfest is held right next door. There will also be games, entertainment, and carnival rides available at Summerfest for those family members who don’t wish to look at beautiful cars all day. By the time you read this in the Pando, you probably are past the deadline for receiving a guaranteed event T-shirt for
entering your vehicle (deadline May 30, 2015). If you still want to enter, please go to www.fvcarshow.com and download your entry form. Registration will be accepted via mail until June 24, 2015 and drive-in registrations are welcome on the morning of Saturday, June 27, 2015. I Hope you will join us for this nonstress, local car show, either as a participant, or as a viewer. It comes almost two weeks after our own White Gloves Concours, so our vehicles should still be looking pretty good… The photos accompanying this article are from last year’s Porsche Corral at the 2014 Fountain Valley Classic Car & Truck Show. EDITOR’S MESSAGE CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7 against Mr. Piech, included his cousin, Mr. Wolfgang Porsche. The Board composition of VW group includes trade union members (by law in Germany as I understand) as well as representatives of state government that have invested in VW, think of our own “Calpers” as an active shareholder example. Mr. Piech resigned effective immediately rather than wait for a vote that could have gone and would have gone against him, effectively doing as the Romans once did; “falling on his sword”. Does this make a difference to us past, current, and perhaps future Porsche owners? Well I reckon the answer has to be “maybe”. Piech began his career famously at Porsche and was the guy who launched the iconic 917. The 917 is one of our all time favorite Porsche Race Cars, and was once a poster staple on most garage walls around the world. He actually did “save” Volkswagen, as when he took over in the 90’s it was purportedly nearly in bankruptcy. But, that was then, and this is now. We still have a Porsche on the Board at VW group, the afore mentioned Mr. Wolfgang Porsche. And, the Porsche family retain a significant share ownership in both the amalgamated stock (VW) and the individualized Porsche stock. And Porsche makes money, big money. So
hopefully we won’t have to worry about the “purity” of our brand and perhaps even some cross platform and technical input will only serve to strengthen Porsche. Porsche has a distinctive line up. Probably the biggest in its’ history now with the introduction of the Macan. The Macan is selling quite well with 624 sold in February per Panorama Magazine. Actually, the SUV’s outsold the sports cars in that month, which has not been all that unusual since the introduction of the Cayenne. So maybe Porsche will continue to broaden its products in its quest to capture the “aspirational” buyer and the junior buyer moving his or her way up the corporate food chain. You know how it goes; Boxster/Cayman for the young and upwardly mobile that we used to call “yuppies”, then perhaps the Macan with a new family and the first little offspring, and then the Cayenne when said offspring multiply to a full family with soccer commitments and band practice with a tuba or a bass fiddle. Then finally the 911, when senior executive Mom/Dad arrives at the corner office with the kids in college. Or perhaps even the 918 or its future equivalent if you’ve invented a new
way to slice bread with astronomical sales of said device and land in the upper 0.0005%. There is no maybe that hybrid technology will continue to seep across the product line. And no maybe that turbocharging of smaller engines, perhaps flat fours will occur. All of these are ways to stay on the green side of our times, and help tease the “CAFE” higher in the fleet. “CAFE” means Corporate Average Fuel Economy” and more than just the USA are mandating higher requirements there. But maybe they’ll remember the soul and the spirit of that little bathtub with a filched VW motor in back? It ran economically for the times, cost a lot of money, and handled like no other. Maybe. Write me, tell me your thoughts. Challenge me, disagree with me and check my cheeks for ink stains….I’d love to hear from you. Okay, welcome to June and have yourself a merry little midyear festive time!
