Any resemblance to the car of your dreams is purely intentional. It wears its heritage proudly on its sleeves. And fenders. And roofline. Experience the Porsche Macan S. A 340-horsepower twin-turbo V6, PDK double-clutch transmission and active all-wheel drive with Porsche Traction Management for maximum grip in varying driving conditions. All standard. The Macan S is built around our defining belief that every drive should be unforgettable. And every car should be a sports car. Dream fulfillment begins with a test drive. Porsche. There is no substitute.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Barry Michaels

Everyone Loves A Parade! A

s a small-town kid growing up in the Midwest and the central coast area of California, every year my communities celebrated key events with a parade; New Year’s, President’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day, the 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. It seemed the whole town turned out to either march in the parade or watch family and friends marching in the parade. Parade day was a celebration of life that brought the community together in recognition of those things we shared in common and facilitated good conversation and joyful storytelling. Somehow, food was a part of those celebrations, whether pancake breakfasts, barbeques at the fairgrounds or in the town square, or pot-luck dinners at the community center. While the Porsche Club of America is not a town it certainly is a community. Like the communities of my childhood the PCA community holds an annual parade, and what a parade it is! Think of it as a weeklong extravaganza with 2,000+ of your friends driving the world’s finest automobile. The 63rd Annual Porsche Parade will be held next month (July 8-14). The event takes place in a new location each year. For 2018, we’re heading to the Midwest — the summer resort town of Osage Beach on the Lake of the Ozarks. In addition to traditional Parade activities such as concours, autocross, time-speed-distance and gimmick rallies; the location provides family fun with watersports, boating, golf, an indoor waterpark, and more. There are five main guided driving tours, two dinner cruises and a number of self-directed tours during the week of Parade. The tours have become very popular in that they provide

the opportunity to get out and drive the cars we love while enjoying new scenery, local culture, food and activities most of us would not otherwise take the opportunity to experience. For the more academically oriented, a series of Porsche seminars and Tech Tactics are scheduled. In addition to PCA members and staff, representatives from the Porsche family, the Porsche factory in Stuttgart, and from Porsche Cars North America also attend, along with numerous automotive-related spokespeople. It’s always a treat to see members of the Porsche family at Parade, showing their appreciation for and enjoying what is the largest single-marque car club in the world. At the 60th Parade Denise and I had the pleasure of sitting next to Wolfgang Porsche during lunch, as he explained his joy in showing his son that there was more to the USA than New York or Los Angeles. Unfortunately, it’s too late to register for this year’s event, but I would encourage you to mark your calendar well ahead of time to register for the 2019 Parade. The Parade experience reaches across the cars to the men and women who drive and cherish them. We all know the pleasure that a Porsche can provide, and PCA has built a community around that feeling. Join the party; the road awaits.

Story by Mark Wallace, Concours Chair Photos by Joe Barnet and Gary Labb

he 48th Annual White Glove Concours and Car Show on Saturday, June 16, 2018, has a few new features this year we want you to know about! We have a new competition division, “Ganz Ubergang,” which has been added for the “new” Porsches. It takes the Ubergang Division one step closer to full concours competition. Here is your opportunity if you drive a Boxster, Cayman, 911 Carrera (991, 2012 on), Cayenne, Panamera, or Macan; to earn a trophy in recognition of all your hard work in caring for your Porsche to look like new. This division adds near complete car judging but leaves out the engine compartment. For complete concours competition information go to: www. zone8.org. The Fountain Valley Foundation will be operating a beer and wine garden at the Concours and their sales go to benefit local nonprofits in the city, cold sodas will also be available. Additionally, this year you can order lunch on the Motorsportreg.com registration form. We contacted the popular caterer used for our event in previous years and

Passion For The Legend Story and Drawings by Tom Rodberg

T

he wife and I were recently going through old files and came across the attached items. I guess like a lot of people, it’s funny when you find things like this and wonder, (a) why on earth do we have these, and (b) why on earth did we keep these things in the first place?! I drew the two sketches before ever owning a Porsche and can verify they were drawn either 1971 or 1972. Apparently, the seeds of Porsche ownership were subconsciously planted before actual ownership. At the time, I had three roommates and one of them owned a Kelly green ’68 912. I have great memories of road trips to Oregon and many ski trips to Mammoth in that car. We didn’t have enough money for a hotel, and we’d sleep, or attempt to sleep, in freezing temps in Bishop before heading to Mammoth to ski the next morning. Well, my buddy bought a new silver 911 Targa and I think that was probably when the passion really bit me. You know, maybe these things just showed up to remind me of fun memories. Tom Rodberg

My first Porsche was also a ‘73 T and flash forward some plus years, here is a photo with our current ‘73.5 T. Cars still look great, but not sure what happened to the driver in 40+ years.

2nd Annual Pechanga Lunch Tour Story by Glenn Billings and Photos by Larry Moore

driving through the famed Corkscrew Hairpin at Laguna Seca a dozen times a lap. The fall off area on the right was sometimes guarded by only a chain link fence, which on one left hand turn had collapsed, overhanging the abyss. Someone gambled and lost. Ominous. This is what Larry was mentioning at the beginning of the tour.

A

pril 15th is usually a dark day for taxpayers; however, this year afforded a reprieve by falling on the 17th, so it was idyllic for our PCA-OCR club members to enjoy the bright skies and drive to the Pechanga Casino in Temecula. We gathered at Rancho Viejo Road just off Ortega Highway in San Juan Capistrano. Most of the participants were in a narrow age-range group, but the age of the Porsches varied widely from era-to-era. Wayne Yong, oddly enough, had the oldest car there, a much sought-after air cooled 1982 3 liter 911 SC with around 172 Horsepower. The newest car, owned by James Wehner, was an ultra violet GT3 RS with high wing, 7 speed dual clutch automatic with 500 Horsepower. In between these two, a good mix of Boxsters, 911s, Targas, Carreras, and other GT3s. Before departing the parking lot mall, our Tour Meister Larry Moore, alerted us to an ominous section of road to be watchful of, which you’ll read about. So, instead of starting out on the Ortega Highway, we were going to follow a different course to our destination by going the back way to the Indian Casino. The 72-mile trek started with a couple of lefts and right hand turns around the industrial and residential areas leading to the San Diego Freeway South. Twenty-nine miles later, exiting at Highway 76 East, our spirits perked up a little because of the exciting roads that lie ahead. The gentle curves on Gopher Canyon Road were mostly 4th and 5th gear bends with a scenic display of secluded ranches and haciendas along the tree lined landscape. However, when turning onto Lilac Road and then Courser Canyon, there`s no time to take in the surroundings. Now, you’re busy exercising the steering wheel, sometimes going lock-to-lock, in first and second gear, and navigating up the hillside on extremely narrow two-lane roads. It felt like

Stalking behind some of the GT3s, you could make out the constant whir of the turbo engines, the throaty sounds under acceleration, and the gurgling under braking. These Porsches have a certain bulk to their size and also have the widest tires available, decreasing body roll, and a very deliberate turning radius which increases corning speed. The super tight switchbacks and elongated hairpin turns straightened out a bit, giving my sore arms a rest. The hilly terrain flattened out a little as we saw some

meandering brown cows grazing alongside the road. If you`re not thinking about your driving, you can observe the orange, lemon and avocado tree farms speckling the rolling fields as we reached the halfway point in our 122 mile trip. Wow, we made it! My watch read 12:15. With ten restaurants to choose from, members chose to split up for an hour and a half to both gamble and have lunch. Bob DeBach and his wife, Debra, recouped most of their losses with a touch on the video poker machine. Some won, and most lost. About half of the club members took off on their own, while the other half joined Larry to go back through Lake Elsinore and onto Ortega Highway. Always a nice drive, especially in Porsches, because no matter how old or new your model is, it’s a nice balance of power and control. However, no Porsche engine can keep pace with one’s own heartbeat. Exhilarating! What fun! There will definitely be other Porsche tours in the future. You can bet on it. June 2018 | PANDO 21

California Festival of Speed

Bright blue skies and Denny Asbury’s smooth driving resulted in passengers Monica Asbury and myself leaving Huntington Beach and arriving in Fontana in under an hour to enjoy the annual California Festival Speed – the largest Porsche Event in the Southwest. We quickly moved through the Registration Line, then back into our vehicle where we were flagged through by a smiling PCA-OCR volunteer, Bunny Falk, to the main parking lot “manned” by PCA-OCR volunteer, Scott Huddleston. Walking through the parking lot, the Porsche Brand was well

22 PANDO | June 2018

represented starting with 356s, 928s, 944s, 9lls, Boxsters, etc. Walking through Vendor Row, we saw the new Kid’s Place and enjoyed the children with their families cheering them on in the competitive table racing, as well as some creative crafting. On our way to the three separate large garages, we ran into PCA-OCR member Keith Guidus and his wife just completing their volunteer duties; and whisking by to catch the perfect shot was Joe Barnet. We were fortunate enough to spend some time with James

Buck and Jim Salzer as they were preparing for their respective races. Derek Taguchi’s Porsche was parked opposite James’ and Jim’s garage location, and Tiffani Lewis dashed in to get ready to ride assist with Darin Moore. Meanwhile, Denny, Monica and I relaxed from the heat in James Buck’s RV, and enjoyed listening to him and appreciating his hospitality while he prepared for another race. We ran into PCA-OCR’s own Garey Cooper, CFOS “Announcer Extraordinaire,” grabbing a well-

deserved quick bite to eat at the “Food Truck Court” before returning to his microphone and informing attendees of various CFOS events, sponsors and racing schedule; yet Garey still graciously made a point of welcoming us and recommending what and which truck(s) to eat! From 10:40 a .m.- 2:45 p.m., we enjoyed CFOS, cheered James Buck and Darin on as they raced and, on our way out, we stopped and visited with Laura and Mark Hergesheimer and got the guided tour of their “Blast Off” car. While exiting the gate, we saw Caesar Guyot arriving to check out CFOS. etc. We had a great time and knew there were other PCA-OCR volunteers at CFOS including but not limited to Al Gutierrez, Barry and Denise Michaels. California Festival of Speed – check it out in 2019!

Story by Denny Asbury Photos by Denny Asbury and Gary Labb

ednesday night, April 11, 2018, two days before the start of the 41st Long Beach Grand Prix, we had a great time at the Circle Porsche’s Grand Prix party! Held at the Porsche Experience Center in Carson, California, Circle Porsche of Long Beach launched a celebration for their customers and guests. The evening flowed around classic Porsche racecars, current Porsche racecars and wonderful German food and liquid refreshments, all which were exhibited in the spacious and glamorous “Experience” Center’s main lobby, service area, gift shop, track side restaurant and snack bar. Customers and guests could relax, enjoy and slowly walk through the display and service area while absorbing the vibrations from the fantastic, hi performance and exotic racecars. The L.B.G.P. Porsche race cars were on display out in front of the lounge area bordering the racetrack, where they should be! There was an autograph table set up so guests could acquire autographs from the Porsche team drivers in attendance, who also happen to be racing at LBGP on Friday. A special raffle was announced during the evening to give away Grand Prix prizes. The “Experience” at the Porsche Center was enjoyed by all the fans and guests. Indeed, the evening was a “Very Grand Prix Party!”

I have been going to “Free Friday” for years with one of our members who has since retired and moved out of state, and for the last couple of years, with Denny Asbury and his Design Guru, Scott Starkey. We arrived at the track early to watch the practice runs and then made our way (by following our noses) to the smokiest on-site BBQ rib vendor! This has become a tradition, and there is nothing better than enjoying a delicious, messy rib while watching the qualifiers zoom by! This year we met up with Dave and Jimmy from the AFS/PR1 Mathiasen Motorsport Team. They were Denny’s Crew chiefs back in the day when Denny was a Formula Driver. We got a fantastic, special indepth “behind the scene” look at their pit and the phenomenal Ligier prototype car #52, which was quite a treat. The day was incredible, the weather was great, we ran into other OCR members, visited the Circle Porsche and GMG sponsored cars and the racing was fantastic. After this year’s terrific Long Beach Grand Prix experience, I’m not looking forward to having to wait another year, but this has become a great tradition. Dave Hong, retired Goodie Store Elf #2.

RICE’S

Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice

SPRING is in the air; fresh colors, new interior, full tank of fuel, now only needs a destination. A fresh 356 and 2018’s springa-calling, for a drive, that is. OCR’s Jim Poste enjoys one of the many cars at Historic Main Street’s Friday Nite Cruise & Car Show. It’s like a box of chocolates, you just never know what’s going to show up here …….

And while we’re at it, Jim’s done some “spring cleaning” of his own: Jim Poste’s 993 non-sunroof Carrera with front and rear Porsche / Bilstein + Elephant RS suspension. And out back: RS Vario-Ram engine UpGrade. Oh, and the clutch? GONE is the “boat anchor” DMF and now a SMF (lightweight flywheel) and Ruf-Sachs Sport (light weight) Clutch. It’s like driving lightening-- LfR and its 100% smog & OBDII legal!

The family PorschE: I’m sure I’m addressing what most of you well know, but we have many new OCR members to Porsche among us who may not know much of the history of Porsche, and as they grow to love their Porsches, they too wonder how this affection came about. Porsche ran their everyday road cars and won races mostly for their reliability and fuel efficiency. The mid 1960’s brought

the new 901-911, and it’s racing passed the records held by the Porsche 356 and surprised everyone wining in rally’s and road circuits. The racing 904, 906, and 907 race cars showed the potential of Porsche’s efforts but, while winning many races, it was not a serious contender to win outright against Ford 7.0 Liter V-8 GT-40s, Ferrari V-12 P-4 Coupes; and the gang of Lola sports racers - some monster, ear blasting V-8s!

Now, a new beginning: The Porsche (Mezger) 908 with its boxer F-8 cylinder signaled to the automotive and racing world that Porsche now meant to win 1st overall against all comers in World Endurance Racing, especially Le Mans! The 908 LH (Lang Heck, or “Long Tail”) were, and still are, my favorite Porsches of all. The 908 LH had a completely June 2018 | PANDO 33

aerodynamic envelope body. It was the sleekest, cleanest, and fastest machine with 3.0 liters on the planet. Now here is THE MAN and his FAMILY to put their mark on the future of their Company. Impressive to say the least, and also the commitment of why they race and put their reputation on the line doing it! IS THIS LOVE, or what? And again, the reality came to be while the lovely 908LH was fast, Extremely fast! The 908 LH was unstable on long flat-out straights. Thus, began a need for better road holding. That came to a head with the slightly larger Mezger Boxer F-12 917 of 580 HP in that slippery LH body. Porsche as always faced the challenge head on and made their new 917 and older 908 hunker down on the track and in fact, go even faster! This, I think, is the image, a sort-of hall mark of what Porsche is all about. One last comment, while on my only factory visit in late 1974, I happened to be in the customer delivery area when Ferry Porsche came out to talk to new Porsche owners as they came to pick up their new Porsche. This was for the European Delivery Program where, after factory pick up, they motor around the “continent” before having their Porsche shipped to the USA. Ferry Porsche enjoyed talking to everyone and shared in their excitement. To me he seemed very neat, immaculately dressed in a simple business suit, and enjoyed talking with all new Porsche owners. My own impression is, this man puts his money into his company to make it even better, more efficient and quicker, all the while using less weight and less fuel to do so. Truly amazing, and I am glad I got aboard with Porsche during their younger days. And one more time, the 908 missed being the first Porsche to win Le Mans (1969) by only a tiny margin to a 5.0L V-8 Ford GT-40. Next year the 908’s BIGGER brother, the 917-K, came to Le Mans. No more needs to be said.

34 PANDO | June 2018

One of my most favorite images. Dr. Ferry Porsche, two of his three sons and nephew.

My own impression is, this man puts his money into his company to make it even better, more efficient and quicker, all the while using less weight and less fuel to do so.

UP FIXIN Der PORSCHE Nr.1 The oil leak Up-Fixin, in a prior PANDO, I needed to add another line or two. 930 Turbo oil leak problem at the scavenge oil line to the Scavenge Oil Pump: The banjo fitting is normally sealed with two aluminum Sealing Rings. The Porsche specified sealing rings for the 1975 -1994 911 Turbo is for two M16 x 20 aluminum sealing rings (16.0 x 20.0 x 1.5 m).

However, the banjo fitting is supposed to seal it, and has a sealing surface of 23 mm in diameter. So, the critical sealing area is not getting the benefit of a full surface contact with the specified sealing ring. It doesn’t seem right, very odd indeed? The smaller sealing ring gets over-tightened in efforts to stop oil leaks, and because of its small size, it actually deforms the brass banjo’s sealing surface. This is what deformed the banjo in the first place and caused it to leak.

One last item,

OEM seal ring: a wee bit too small, don’t ya think?

OEM Porsche Sport-o-matic seal ring(s)

Porsche Aluminum Sealing Rings or “gaskets” are actually a compound of magnesium and aluminum designed so that using the specified torque, they partially deform and make an oil tight metal to metal seal. This is why you ALWAYS replace them when they are removed. However, the counterfeit ones squashed out under lower torque and became partially stuck into the bore holes and imbedded into the stud screw threads. One particular annoying thing was removing the 911 cam covers which became very frustrating and timeconsuming job. This greatly contributed to the many new vented adjectives and nouns! Again, today the smaller size sealing rings just seem wrong? And I for one, will use the larger one. We answer questions, inquiries, and comments. TRY US! Godspeed

Leslie Rice

Quick Fix Oil Drain Plug “Gaskets” 18.0x 24.0 x 1.5 and O-Rings 999.701.690.40

I reported on this old ‘hot rod’ trick of using a Carrera (1984-89) Chain Tensioner O-Ring and then using two larger sealing rings, from the oil drain plug, an aluminum sealing ring (2ea.) 18.5 x 23.5 x 1.5 mm, Nr. 900.123.106.30. I simply installed the too large sealing rings and pushed the O-rings in between the sealing rings on both sides of the hollow bolt. The O-ring protrudes just enough to make the actual seal and end the oil leak! But what about a more acceptable fix? I looked around and found a sealing ring with 16 mm I.D. and a nice wide outer sealing surface. It turns out it is found in the Sporto-matic transaxle’s engine driven oil pump system. It measures: 16.0 x 22.0 x 1.5mm, Nr. 900.123.019.30 and fits over a much larger surface of the banjo and hollow bolt than what we have been using. Porsche lists them for $2.57 each!

I’m sold on the larger Sport-O sealing rings. Similar aluminum rings are available from www. BELL METRIC.com as they have an “Aluminum Gasket” for $ 0.33 cents each! (ALUMINUM GASKET M16 x 22 x 1.5)

Fits perfectly over the entire sealing surface of the banjo.
