Greg Lush

No “i” in Porsche Years ago, I read that originally Starbucks Coffee was not focused on selling coffee. Instead, the Seattle-based organization really wanted to create a “second living room” for folks, a place to gather and visit (while enjoying some coffee and treats). When I think about OCR, I do not think about a car club. Instead, my thoughts take me to a community which is a “second family”. The motivation for this topic came from the OCR AutoX awards party, which was celebrated on January 28th thanks to Walters Porsche and their beautiful new dealership. We were blessed to have Walter attend (yep, the Walter in Walter’s) and share with us his thoughts on the experience and lifestyle we inherit once Porsche owners. I just love the PCA National tagline “fueled by volunteers”; this is certainly not lost on the members of OCR as so many of us volunteer in so many ways. Without a doubt, the best way to meet other members and get the most out of OCR is to volunteer, so please don’t hesitate to ask. You have all received a few emails from me over the years and have likely noticed my signature; People. Porsches. Passion. While it would be almost impossible to list all of the volunteers, I would like to mention your Board of Directors and thank them for the commitment and leadership for our club:

Monica Asbury | Secretary: now this title is a serious understatement. Monica is the glue that binds the board together. Since being secretary was not enough, Monica also runs our “goodie store”, which is an extraordinary retail operation exclusive to OCR members. The energy and creativity infused into both of her volunteer positions is outstanding. Monica, you are our rock, thank you from the bottom of my heart. James Buck | Member at Large: we have all been blessed at some time in our lives to know a sincerely nice person. James and I became friends as a result of our shared interests in racing and have developed a wonderful friendship. He is the epitome of a club spokesperson, instantly welcoming folks into our OCR family. Speedy, thank you so much for your second term on our Board of Directors. C.L. Jarusek | Vice President: if we had an award for social BOD member, C.L. would win it hands-down. I’d imagine that many of you, who have attended any OCR event, have met C.L. Always approachable and welcoming, C.L. floats around the room thanking and introducing members to one another. If Monica is the glue, C.L. is the string which weaves us together. Thank you C.L. for your continued contributions and friendly demeanor.

Gary Labb | Member at Large | Social Media Guru: simply put, we would not have a social presence on the Internet if it was not for Gary. With a knack for keeping our digital house in order, he is an invaluable member of the Board. Thank you Gary for the hours you commit, everyday managing all of the social requests and your efforts as member at large. David Piper | Treasurer: I ask you, what can’t you say about our “money man”? For those of you that look at our financials posted every month, you will know that David puts a ton of effort into keeping all of the money accounted for and visible. About a year into my Presidency, we decided that greater visibility of each part of the OCR club would be beneficial, and without missing a beat David started producing individual profit and loss statements for each operation within OCR. David, thank you for everything you do and for your wonderful and dry sense of humor. Sandy Schwartz | Membership Director: even before Sandy showed his incredible talents at keeping our membership in order and happy, I was drawn to Sandy since he and I both have 997’s and he is a great orator. Thank you Sandy for everything you do organizing the thousands of members in our wonderful club. March 2017 | PANDO 3

Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington

DEREK BELL

My Racing Life by Derek Bell and Alan Henry, published October 2015 by Evro Publishing LTD, Dorset, England. NOTE: This Evro edition is an exact duplicate of the Haynes edition published in 2011. Derek Bell can be considered the grand old man of endurance racing because his driving career endured for close to 50 years. He won all of the big events: Le Mans, Daytona, with a couple world championships along the way. The introduction nicely recaps his life and career spanning from 1964 through 2011, and could be considered an ‘executive summary’ of the book. But don’t stop there. The book is a fascinating read with lots of Porsche content – one of the six chapters is “Porsche: a special partnership”. Although British motorsports journalist and editor, Alan Henry, is listed as coauthor, the first person tense in which this autobiography is written does make it seem to be Derek himself talking. Fast-paced and captivating, the you-arethere feeling provided by this book has kept this reviewer up beyond bedtime on several occasions. More than any book in some time, this book revives his youth of living in the racing world vicariously through books. One incident that stands out is Bell’s discussion of the experience (as a 26 year old rookie in his first race after moving up from Formula 3 to Formula 2), of having breakfast with his idol, Jimmy Clark (who had already won more Grand Prix races (25) and achieved more Grand Prix pole positions (33) than any other driver), and riding to the track with

him, only to have Jimmy killed in the first heat of the race! What an introduction to big-time racing. D E R E K BELL My racing life has very few pages without a picture, but a number of pages without text. In addition to the multitude of pictures, there are lots and lots of words jammed into these 272 pages – old line Porsche enthusiasts may find reading glasses to be appropriate. An absorbing page-turner, this is a book that reads like a novel written about a guy who drives race cars. His personal comments on many famous people in motor racing may not be appreciated by all, for which he apologizes in advance, but his forthright observations provide fascinating new insight into the workings of various motorsports teams and organizations, particularly Porsche. Bell comments that “without a doubt” Jacky Ickx was “the world’s most versatile racing driver” at the time of his retirement (in 1985). After reading this book, this reviewer is convinced that Derek Bell in turn, was the world’s most versatile racing driver at the time of his retirement (in 2005).

Derek Bell was arguably the most significant driver to race Porsches. This book also discusses his involvement, sometimes very intensive, with the racing programs, formal and informal, of a great variety of marques. And it further describes his amazingly extensive career as a TV Personality, who gave racing commentary from the studio, the track, and even the driver’s seat! A fascinating story very well presented in what may well become a ‘classic’ book. DEREK BELL My racing life is very liberally illustrated, and at 272, 8-1/2 x 11 inch pages, is ‛coffee-table’ sized. It should be available for $43.96 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it) or from http://www.quatroknows.com

AUTO-X CORNER

Your First Autocross

Story by Keith Gregorio, Photos by Paul Novotne So, you’ve decided to find out what all the fuss is about Autocross. The Autocross posts on the PCA-OCR app, the great photos that Paul Novotne takes to showcase each Autocross, the camaraderie that comes with participating in Autocross; and it intrigues you. Well, where do you start? First, it is good to find out when Autocross events happen. Generally, PCA-OCR AX is held one Sunday per month, at our beloved El Toro runways. The easiest way to find out is to check the OCR website events calendar or look on page 2 in the Pando. On Autocoss Day at 7:15 AM, assuming you’ve found the way through the Great Park, and then the pits- so it begins! Tech & Registration: Tech Inspection— All vehicles taking part in the autocross day are required to have a brief inspection to ensure the vehicle is in safe operating condition. The tech line closes promptly at 7:30 A.M. All drivers are encouraged to “Pre-Tech” your vehicle before the day of the event. Please see one of our sponsors on the PCA-OCR website: http://www.pcaocr. com/?page=12

12 PANDO | March 2017

Before going through the tech line, please ensure you have removed ALL loose items in your vehicle, including: floor mats, radar detectors, phones and holders. Remember to check for loose items under your seats! Please ensure you have registered for “Novice” class. If you have used a different car class on your motorsportreg.com registration, please inform the volunteers at the registration. You will be allowed to run “novice class” for up to 6 sessions during the year. At registration, you will be assigned a color run group for the day, which will be indicated on a sticker for your windshield. Take note of your run group and be sure to understand when your corner working session is during the day (see instructor pairing). Track Walk: As a first time student, it is imperative that you attend the group walk of the track. This will be led by a highly experienced Instructor Driver, and the information during the track walk will be invaluable to your day. Please identify yourself to the Instructor leading the walk, so they may point out any additional details. Drivers Meeting: Following the track walk, general announcements and the

safety briefing are presented. Pay close attention to the reminders during the safety briefing (pit area speed limit, corner worker rules, etc.). Instructor Pairing: The driver’s meeting will conclude with your instructor pairing. Upon meeting with your instructor, ensure you understand your run group color, so you each know when you are due on grid / track. During one of the sessions, you will be required to complete Corner Work. As a first time student, you will need to have your instructor (or another experienced Driver Instructor) with you while you perform corner work. You will have plenty of time while corner working to learn how to use the radio, collect cones, stay in a safety zone, and call in driver penalties during timed runs. Morning Practice: If possible, ride the course with your instructor first (if your run group allows). When it’s your turn to drive, your instructor will ride along with you. Remember: • 5mph in the pits! • Follow your instructor’s guidance • Let the start flag volunteer know you are a “first timer” - they will give you additional separation from the car behind you.

• •

• •

Drive the course SMOOTHLY, and LOOK AHEAD! Memorize the layout and landmarks (colored cones, etc…) of the track as you drive. Build your speed up slowly as you repeat laps, and build confidence; it is more important to be SMOOTH through the course! After each run, debrief with your instructor. Ask questions! Remember to breathe, be smooth, and have fun!!!

Afternoon Timed Runs: Your afternoon sessions will not be any different than the morning sessions, outside of penalties applied to your lap time as a result of striking cones, or going off-course. At this juncture, continue to be concerned with being smooth and steady, and your lap times will drop accordingly.

Driver Instructors for guidance. Finally, following clean up, awards will be given to those placing at the top of their class! See you on the track! Don’t forget to register at motorsportreg.com.

See More Auto-X Photos:

End of Day Clean-Up & Awards: At the end of the timed runs, much help is needed from all drivers to clear the track and tear down gear. See any of the

For the Love of Porsche Story by Sandy Schwartz

My grandfather always loved his cars. I definitely inherited his love for cars. I started out with a Volkswagen, but I distinctly remember when I knew I would drive a Porsche one day. While working at a gas station, my coworker had a tricked out yellow 914. It was so much faster than my VW, and that car definitely turned heads as it went down the street. He offered me a ride when we took a trip down PCH towards

Newport Beach. The year was 1974, and that’s when I knew that I would have a Porsche one day. Fast forward to 1979. After saving my dollars and pennies, it was time to pull the trigger and get my first Porsche. A Silver 924! It wasn’t the traditional rear engine car (my meager savings didn’t let me step into one of those), but I had the Porsche crested vehicle in my possession! I was a young man with a great sports car. I drove it all the time, it was so much more fun than my VW beetle. Since that day, I have been smitten with the brand. As time went on, I sold the 924 and I went through a few “Other” brand vehicles. In 1984, I again was in the market for another Porsche, a 1984 944, in

Porsche’s awesome Burgundy color with color matching Fuchs wheels. As things in life change so did my vehicles. The 944 was sold for practical reasons, but my passion for Porsches never waned. In my mind, I always said I would own a 911, and in 2004 I purchased a beautiful 911 in Carrera White. I finally achieved my dream. Eventually, I sold the 911 and purchased my current Porsche, a 2007 Carrera S appointed just like I wanted it. Porsches will always be my first love (for cars that is!). My love for the brand runs deep! For me, it has been a slow steady progression to get to what I own today. I would not change the experience for anything. Ich Bin Gespannt! (I am Excited!)

FLYING

SOUTH FOR THE

WINTER

Story and Photos by Rob Alen

March is when the world of motorcars and motorsports goes to Florida Amelia Island

The Amelia Island Concours, just outside of Jacksonville, FL, has become the prestige East Coast car event. On the lush grounds of the Ritz Carlton hotel, it combines many of the elements of Monterey Car Week in one place: famous cars of historical value, high priced auctions, and rare race cars. This year, the event honors Brumos Porsche, which formerly did business in Jacksonville. The Brumos dealership was the headquarters of Porsche drivers like Peter Gregg and Hurley Haywood during the 1970’s through to today.

Sebring: The race

The Amelia Island Concours isn’t the only car event in March. About a week after Amelia Island, if you drive about three hours south to the smack middle of the state, you will arrive at the Sebring Races. All the great cars and drivers have raced there. Racing on the runways of a former World War II bomber-training base, the 12-Hours of Sebring course is infamously rough and bumpy making it 18 PANDO | March 2017

seem like a lifetime for cars and drivers. It’s not grandstand viewing only, you can walk around the course and find a good spot to watch. There is access to the paddock throughout the weekend.

Sebring: The party

The full experience of Sebring is in the infield. Generations of people have been coming to Sebring for decades and camp in the same spot year after year. There is the crowd at “Turn 10,” “F Troop,” a band of old guys playing southern rock, closing the weekend with Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird,” and a dive bar on the corner of access roads. They can’t charge for drinks, but you can “donate.” This year, the new long-distance Porsche 911 RSR race car will be circulating; now with the engine ahead of the rear axle; a four-liter flat six with 510 horsepower, and radical aerodynamics. Amelia Island is March 10-12 , there are hotels around the Jacksonville airport, it’s less than an hour drive to the Ritz. (www.ameliaconcours.org) Sebring is March 15-18. Getting a hotel can be tough, so call now. But, hey, you can always practice all the camping out stuff you learned in Boy Scouts. (www. sebringraceway.com) March 2017 | PANDO 19

Cone Zone Update by Rob Greene

At the March Breakfast Club meeting, we will complete our second series of Porsche Alley Cone Zone. Thank you to all who have participated in the previous two series. We hope it has added to the enjoyment of the Breakfast Club meeting at Original Mike’s. The new series will begin on April 1, 2017, (we’re not joking!) and will include color exercises, model types, and different types of equipment. I also want to give a special thank you to everyone who provided ideas for the third series. The plan for the monthly Cone Zone themes follows: • April: “Color Sorting” • May: “Color Sorting” • June: “Color Sorting” • July: Red, White, and Blue • August: All Cabriolets • September: All fixed rear wing Porsches (includes whale-tails, duckbills, Tequipment, aftermarket, GT-2, GT-3, auto-crossers etc.) • October: Any Porsches with 15” – 17” diameter wheels • November: Any Porsches with 18” diameter wheels

• • •

December: Any Porsches with 19” diameter wheels January: No Porsche Alley Cone Zone--- Attend the OCR Brunch! February: Any Porsche with 20” and up diameter wheels

April-June

Are you wondering what “color sorting” is? Well, here are the suggested “rules”! The first Porsche to arrive at Original Mike’s gets to park anywhere in the lot. The driver/passenger grabs a cone from the stack of cones and puts it in front of their car to establish the first color group. So, if the first car is red, all red cars should park in the same area. The next different colored car to arrive in the parking lot needs to park away from the first established group. The driver/passenger will put a cone in front of their car to establish the second color group. If the second different color car is blue, all blue cars should park in the same area, etc.

This process will continue until we run out of cones, colors, Porsches, or time. We end up with groups of colors, nicely sorted and nearly everyone gets to park in a Cone Zone! We’ll try this for three meetings and then move on to Red, White and Blue for the July meeting.

Other months

We hope July-February is selfexplanatory. For July, anyone with a red, white, or blue Porsche can park in the Cone Zone. What better month to show off the topless group than August? September should provide a lot of different looks, from earlier Porsche whale tails to au currant GT-3 and 4 wings, original or after-market. Then the multitude of Porsche and non-Porsche wheel types displayed in OctoberDecember and February for all to see. I hope we all continue to have fun with the Cone Zone. Don’t forget to check the Pando for any schedule revisions.

ANNUAL MEETING & BRUNCH

PCA-OCR held their annual brunch at the beautiful Tustin Ranch Country Club where blue skies prevailed and Porsches shined! It was great to see the terrific turnout of members and their respective partners, including a contingency from Walter’s and Circle, enjoy the camaraderie, but also the fine culinary selection that was on display for the buffet. Our election results were presented with James Buck, Gary Labb and Monica Asbury elected to the Board of Directors post for another term, as well as the introduction of Marcia Salans as the new Pando Editor.

OCR’s silent auction, all proceeds going to Semper Fi, raised a whopping $5,300, and Jennifer Hinds announced her

collection from last year’s plastic bottle campaign. Jennifer challenged OCR to another year of saving plastic bottles and bringing them to the Breakfast Club Meeting for mom and dad, Penny and Paul Hinds, to cheerfully deliver the recycled plastic to daughter Jennifer. Thank you to all who attended and let’s make next year an even bigger turnout! It’s the People! RICE’S

Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice

The 2017 24 hours of DAYTONA race was won overall by a Cadillac Prototype with Ford’s GT placing 1st in GT Le Mans Class, followed by a hair was the “911 RSR” (Cayman) placing second.

So now, as Cadillac extols the merits of winning the grueling 24 hours race to sell its cars on Mondays… Will Porsche now try to figure out if they are in the “911” business -or something else?

Who would of thought a 911 as having a mid engine? That was for 917s, 956s, 914s, and the infamous, but never raced, Carrera GTs and 918s! But funny things do happen in racing.

Now that a 911 and Cayman/Boxster are all normally turbocharged, it is not surprising how this technology has caught on in the drag racing world and one rather wild example is featured on the next page. Don’t expect to see Porsches massing to the drag strips, but you would be surprised how much fun it is. Seen in a recent HOT ROD magazine, it is a verification that turbo chargers has caught on in a big way in the drag racing world and this image from down-under, quick Australia ¼ mile speeder. Fig 3 twin turbo Aussie (see next page).

The “911” has been known for 52 years as a rear engine 2+2 aerodynamic sports car. Now, maybe not so? So is this new “911” now a “Funny Car”? Regardless, the newest 911 ran like stink and was quick in the wet and dry! I wonder how a mid engine would work in my 1968 911 Evo? Back in the day (1950’s), Cadillac raced their full sized cars, but everyone raced real cars back then. Now Cadillac has raced and wins in their prototype. Is this another tongue twister? A Caddy race car? A Cadillac was supposed to be a classy car, a big heavy classy car, and it is supposed to be a low rider from the factory -no more than 6” off the ground, weigh over 5,500 pounds empty. It was designed, on purpose, to be too long to fit in any normal garage, with a trunk 1/3rd as long as the whole car. Caddy’s are supposed to have enormous engines and horsepower for slippery smooth ride and go like blazes! Hot rodders used to get Cadillac engines out of junkyard wrecks and put them in Fords to create “Ford-alacs.” The power was enormously huge! Somewhat like an early 930 turbo, only not near enough brakes But times have changed.

Safety in Neglect?

Another point I was reminded of in my rants on SDV (Self Driving Vehicles) is simply while automotive technology has moved rapidly with new devices to do the driving for us (remember the Hertz commercials?), so new and newer gadgets are coming faster than anyone can understand how to use them let alone maintain them. Automotive technology has automated everything from engine to automated seat heaters. Cars are even ahead of aviation for development and implementation of new ideas, however, automobile manufacturers have nowhere near the background development experience as aviation does. Aviation has very strict maintenance inspections and replacement use on parts, particularly on safety items.

Take for instance the Air Bag. How old is your Porsche’s Air Bag for that matter? When was the last time your air bag system was checked? When was its inflated shape checked for full deployment? When was your air bag inspected for wear, seam separation, or deterioration? Lastly, the explosive discharger device: when was the last replacement done? In aviation, inflation devices like life rafts, inflatable life vests, and inflatable exit slides are required by law to be removed, inflated, inspected, reinstalled, and recertified regularly. It’s the law! Aircraft explosive discharge devices are normally required to be replaced yearly. They are dangerous and sometimes they do not function! So things like fire bottle discharge containers are push button activated by an explosive “squibs”. These things have a mandatory replacement time in service. (“Squibs” are ignited by a 24-volt signal and its shock wave ruptures and blow open a thin membrane that blows anti fire agent to discharge.) We were required to install new squibs yearly on all aircraft systems with them. We were also required to discharge the old squibs and report any that do not work for a possible FAA safety item. So in the rush for SDV cars, just how safe do you think the technology is going to be in a 20 year or older car? Even a Porsche? And again, when was the last time you had your airbag checked? Or your seat belts, or fire extinguisher? You do have one, I hope, and I sincerely hope you never need it. March 2017 | PANDO 29

The A.F.S.C.R.(Air Flow Sensor Control Relay) is powered by key ON. This opens the circuit of the A.F.S.C.R. terminal 30 - 87a. When the relay is then open, no ground is supplied to the RED Fuel Pump Relays in the front trunk. When the Air flow sensor is drawn down during engine cranking at start, the air flow sensor plate moves down, opens the switch, the ground is withdrawn from circuit 87a to 30, is made and ground flows to the red fuel pump relays. Old vs new (smaller) DIODE Ign Delay Relay- Alt Warning light. Top: New Diode 911.617.106.02 Bottom: Old diode 911.617.106.01

Ask a Mechanic

Q

: My 1986 Turbo keeps running when I shut off the engine. I have to put it in gear and ease out the clutch and then everything stops. What’s going on?

: The first 930 Turbos (1975-’76) had an issue with white smoke coming out of the exhaust on a start up. It was determined to be un-burnt fuel. Further, it was realized that when the engine was turned off the two fuel pumps needed for the 930 Turbo’s CIS fuel injection would turn off along with the ignition system. However, the fuel pressure in the CIS fuel injection system was still pressurized from the Fuel Accumulator. Until this pressure bleeds off, fuel pressure would bleed off at the fuel injectors and some fuel leaked down into the intake ports and cylinders.

A

The fix for this was a 1977 upgrade with an Ignition Delay Relay that would keep the ignition powered for 5-8 seconds when the key is turned off. This causes some 930 Turbos to ‘burble’ and run rough for a few seconds as fuel pressure bleeds off. Most turbo engines kind of sputter for a second or two, and then stop running. If you listen carefully you may even hear the Ignition Delay Relay “click” off. However, some unusual problems do come up with this unique turbo electrical-ignition-fuel pump system. 30 PANDO | March 2017

One is the diode 911.607.0106.01 was missing on the alternator warning lamp bulb socket, on the Oil Pressure/Oil Temp gauge, after an instrument repair. This Alternator Warning diode stops current from flowing backwards. With the engine still running, the alternator is also running and it is supplying 12 Volt power to the alternator’s warning light through the blue wire coming from the D+ on the alternator terminal. That power flows through the alternator warning light and on into the RED/black wire and into the cars main electrical system! Now that power is connected to the cars electrical system and supplies just enough to barely keep the fuel pumps running. All this even though the power (ignition) key is turned off! Amusing isn’t it? When I saw this happen, I turned the lights on and that electrical load was enough to cause the fuel pumps to quit running and the engine stopped. The solution is the DIODE placed on the Alternator warning lamp socket and the other end connected to the red/black wire (instrument 12V power). Porsche now has a new smaller diode than the old original cigar long one used from 1977. The new diode is smaller and more reliable. Another problem can be the Air Flow Sensor system has some unusual features that can contribute to these problems.

ALSO in the circuit is the O.B.S.S. (Over Boost Safety Switch) which is the ground for the A.F.S.C.R. terminal 85 -86. That low quality switch has been the cause of more problems even with stock boost pressure. See: Porsche Werk Shop Manual, Turbo Carrera 21 -11. I remove them on all but the 1975-1976 930 as they are the only 930s that do not come with a boost gauge! Be mindful, those VDO boost gauges are very inaccurate! And if the driver is not very “turbo savvy”, I pressure check the O.B.S.S. at valve adjustments. Otherwise, I suggest you make a hard ground for this circuit, and watch your boost gauge religiously. Lastly, the AIR METER has an adjustment for the “AT REST” position and the “ZERO POSITION” and the operation of the “over-boost safety switch.” This is a half-day procedure and need be done by a knowledgeable CIS technician. I’ve only had one or two engines needing this done and I only do it reluctantly. See Turbo Work Shop Manual 25-6a. AIR METERS in front: 3.0L turbo in back: 3.3-3.6 L yellow arrows: ZERO adjusting pin
