PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Barry Michaels

In Search of Dopamine D

opamine. You know, it’s often touted as a “reward chemical” produced by the body. Blame it on the substantia nigra/ ventral segmental area, a region in our midbrain. Research has found that this area is excited by novel stimuli and triggers dopamine release. Recent research has further concluded only completely new things cause strong activity in this area. In other words, you’ll feel much better by experiencing new things. Okay, enough physiology for today; I’ll come back to its relevance in a minute. I am honored and excited to serve as your President. One of my responsibilities leading the Region is working hand-inhand with the other officers, committee chairs and other volunteers to create events and programs which capture the enthusiasm and passion our members have for their cars. That passion expresses itself in many forms including the exhilaration of performance driving event participation, the quiet elegance of concours competition, technical training/education, group touring on back roads, or savory social events. To those new to our club, “social event” translates to something involving food, beverages, or both. All of those events offer the opportunity for members to connect with others passionate about Porsches. No, I didn’t forget rally participation. Rallies require special mention due to the risk of creating temporary anti-social behavior between driver and navigator. Trust me on that point, but don’t be intimidated. Remember, what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger.

In PCA every member counts. One 2018 challenge for OCR leadership will be to balance the types of events within the region to ensure all members are being served. We need your help to meet that challenge. Let us know what events you’d like to see. Through your input we have a better shot at creating events that are both topical and fresh. Let us help you trigger the dopamine pathways in your brain – try something new this year. Science proves you’ll feel better for it. On that note, maybe you’ve never attended or participated in the Festival of Speed (April), one of the PCA Treffen events (April and October), or Porsche Parade (July, but registration is now open). Our region has a Central Coast tour this month, and a tour to the Pechanga Casino for lunch in April. Please remember, as a PCA member you can participate in any Region’s activities. There are 13 regions in Zone 8 and 144 Regions in the Porsche Club of America. We are a family of clubs and members that enjoy playing together. Go out, participate, and enjoy yourselves!

Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington

Speed Secrets - Winning

Autocross Techniques by Ross Bentley, published 2009 by Motorbooks International.

This book is unique within the somewhat limited genre of Autocross (“AX”) Books, because it was written not by an Autocrosser, but by a professional driving instructor. Ross Bentley’s book on winning Autocrosses is all about the driver – how he thinks, feels and reacts, and deals almost exclusively with the preparation, set-up, modification, and maintenance of the driver, not of the car. Adapting his timetested methods of teaching drivers how to go fast, Bentley (assisted by Per Schroeder, Tech Ed of Grassroots Motorsports and winner of more than a few SCCA National Tours, Divisional Championships and Solo II National trophies) clearly details techniques which help AX drivers maintain control and dominate a course. His writing is fast-paced and precise, just like a good AX run. Mostly narrative, the book does include color photos (only one of a Porsche) and graphics to illustrate key points. As befits a book written by an instructor, it has an almost conversational style, tending to follow that old admonition to a military instructor, “tell em what you’re going to tell ‘em, tell ‘em, then tell ‘em what you told ‘em” In a book, such redundancies are a bit off-putting at first,– it sometimes seems that the author said something two different ways and forgot to edit out the one he didn’t want to use – but this approach does reinforce what he is trying to say. True there are some rough spots in the managerial editing – figures referred to by number in the text, but not numbered on the illustrations themselves, other figures numbered but not referred to by number, and other figures showing gaps in

the numerical sequence – but these lapses probably won’t be noticed by the average reader; the book reads well and flows nicely despite these minor glitches. As part of the “Speed Secrets” series, each block of ‘instruction’ in Speed Secrets – Winning Autocross Techniques is encapsulated into a Speed Secret. A few may seem self-evident, but others are rather insightful. All provide useful reminders of the detailed information provided in the book. In eighteen chapters, fortyone of these speed secrets are developed. These speed secrets are tabulated in the back of the book for easy review and mental refreshment. As with other books of this genre, Bentley promotes driver improvement vs car modification, as the most cost effective route to faster Autocross times: ‘secret’ number 8 is “Look to your driving before adjusting your car’s handling.”

seem misplaced to Zone 8 readers, but in most of the country, even PCA AX tend to consist of three or four timed runs, period. In California, we are fortunate to have multiple sessions of multiple practice runs, as part of the AX concept. Speed Secrets – Winning Autocross Techniques is a handbook sized paperback of 158, 6x9 inch pages. It is available from http://www.amazon.com/ books. Interestingly, at roughly $32, this autocross book is the most expensive (in demand?) of the Speed Secrets series.

Ross Bentley devotes a good bit of the book on how to read a track and the proper walking of the course. This focus may March 2018 | PANDO 9

AX Salute to 2017 and a look forward to 2018

PCA-OCR Autocross, Walter’s Porsche Auto-X Series As we close out the 2017 Season, Eric Budai and I say a BIG thank you again to everyone for their participation, help, feedback and continued support making our OCR Autocross program one of the best attended and organized in Zone 8 and exceptionally fun! .

December 2017 Autocross at Angel Stadium The December event of the 2017 Walter’s Porsche Riverside Autocross Championship Series took place at Angel Stadium. This location was a first for OCR Autocross, a series made possible with the generous support of Walter’s Porsche Riverside. This new venue for Autocross was well received and a sold out entry. The central OCR location, pristine track surface and the excitement of a new place to Autocross in the Orange Coast Region created a buzz resulting in a wait list for entry as of early November for this event.

First Time Autocross Participants at the December event included: Jerry Liu in a 2013 Carrera, Kyle Petersen in a 2015 Carrera Cabriolet and and Pram Oen, in his 2015 Porsche 918. As well as, Stephan Lum in a 1971 Camaro, Jan and Michael Weir in their 2009 Turbo, and Joseph Barrett in a 2006 Boxster.

A salute to Eric Budai outgoing Autocross Co-Chair 2016-2017

The fastest time of the day was Kurt Ressler, driving a 2017 Boxster with a time of 42.93. The BRI winner was Michael Oest, driving the Maurier’s 2002 Boxster. What is BRI you ask? Bench Racing Index. Theoretically it takes the car out of the equation and adjusts elapsed time based on a car’s handicap, making it more about driver ability. We organized the first Autocross of 2018 at Angel Stadium on February 18th, and worked to make many improvements from feedback and the experience of our December event.

The track at Angel’s was a little short in elapsed time but a fun course design with a challenging smooth surface of asphalt. We had many people attracted to the event from the buzz created; some new autocrossers and a few that had not been out to autocross for some years, as well as the regulars. Awards Celebration for 2017 We held our Driving Events Celebration and Autocross Awards presentation at Walter’s Porsche Riverside Saturday evening January 27th. Walter’s cleared the upper showroom and parking deck, provided a fabulous buffet and Steve Kienle spoke to the PCA-OCR members about his philosophy at the dealership and a few words in remembrance of his father, Walter.

Erik, Tiffani and Art were presented with their championship jackets. In addition to the embroidery on the jacket recognizing their class win, they all had some extra stitching on the front and back of the jackets announcing their bragging rights! This year, Eric Budai thought we should include a few awards to highlight some other aspects of the camaraderie that goes on at our events. Eric handed out the awards he’d imaginatively came up with and crafted.

Bruce Powers, Dennis Keller, Eric Budai

Bob Scheussler, representing OCR, presented Steve Kienle with a framed poster commemorating and featuring Walter Kienle’s image. Steve spoke about Walter making it a family business that he and his family and managers are continuing that tradition. After the presentation to the Kienle’s, our Master of Ceremonies, Bob Scheussler, proceeded with 2017 Championship Autocross awards. The 2017 Autocross Championship class champions were recognized individually on stage and presented with their trophies and Championship Jacket. Following the class winners presentation, our Chief Driving Instructor presented the Autocross Instructor’s of the Year. The recipients of that honor for 2017 are Tiffani Lewis and Art Haynie. Congratulations and a big thank you to both for the time and dedication to our members throughout the autocross season! Next up our Autocross Championship Series Top Gun; the winner of the BRI for the season was once again Erik Hagendijk, congratulations to Erik! 14 PANDO | March 2018

Eric Budai first announced the Golden Cone award, given to the person hitting the least number of cones during timed runs over the season. That honor went to Dennis Keller who did not hit any cones while completing all eleven events. We also had a Cone Killer award to the person that hit the most cones in timed runs, we announced his name, but as he was not present, you will need to come to our February event where he will receive his prestigious award! Two new “peoples choice awards” created by Eric Budai this season are the BIG NUT award going to the person that is ”all in” the enthusiastic person making autocross fun and exciting for all. The top vote winner for that award was Steve Abbott, our track walk leader. The second award Eric created was the Gear Head award for the person willing to help out anyone, which went to me. Thank you Karen for doing the vote tabulation.

In closing out a year of fun, competition, learning and camaraderie at Autocross, I know I speak for all on the management team in thanking our outgoing CoChair, Eric Budai. A heartfelt thank you to Eric for his leadership, cool head and especially his McGiver-like creative abilities to come up with solutions to every hiccup along the way, which made a difference for everyone involved! . Eric has been a super dedicated team player over the years, taking on just about every role on the management team. He will continue to be a part of our leadership as an Emeritus, and will also be very involved in the management of the OCR DE Track Day events of 2018. Looking forward to 2018, we have events on the schedule through June 3rd. Kurt Ressler, our new Autocross Co-Chair and I are working to schedule July through December with 6 events. Where exactly the location will be for those events is up in the air at this time. We will find out soon if there are any more dates at El Toro or if it will be shut down. We like the location in Anaheim and we are requesting more dates at Angel Stadium. Our big question mark with Angel Stadium is will the price of admission be a deterrent to having the numbers needed to pay the rent. We have the possibility of doing one or two events at San Pedro and there is Fontana. We will update as things develop so that everyone can plan on the dates. Autocross is all volunteer run and just like all PCA-OCR events, it’s the people that make the event happen and that make it fun, and they happen to be driving Porsches! A BIG thank you to everybody that pitches in to lend a hand each event. Thank you again to our 2017 Autocross Championship Series Sponsor Walter’s Porsche Riverside and our Series Support Sponsor GMG. Contact the author: bpautowerkes@gmail.com

I

’ve been doing several upgrades to a 2002 986 Boxster, and in a tribute to James Dean and the 550 Spyder he worked on and drove that fateful day, I named my project “Little Bastard” as an homage to his Porsche. In the process of selling my 1992 Porsche 968 Race Car, I realized the depth of effort it takes to actually sell a race car. When sold, I turned my attention to researching and finding a performance/sport road car and focusing on its road handling capabilities. So far, I’m pretty excited at what I’ve found and I’m enjoying a restore/refresh project. Needless to say, about five days without a Porsche in the garage was filling my mind. It is no secret, Porsche Boxster’s are prolific and affordable on the market right now. Generally, for the price of a new FIAT 500 or Kia Rio, you can have a relatively decent example of “the car that saved Porsche.” The mileage varies, and the wear and tear is sometimes apparent (remember we’re talking used cars here.) However, the thrill of having that gold, black and red crest reflecting back at you when you turn on the garage lights presents an opportunity that several are taking advantage of right now. The 986 is known as “the car that saved Porsche,” which makes it significantly historic. However, don’t look for one to bring $300k at Russo and Steele or RM Sotheby’s. In the mid-1990’s, Porsche was in serious financial trouble. While the marque would probably never have gone away, there certainly was the threat of acquisition by another car company. Think Tata now owning Jaguar and Land Rover. Designer Grant Larson, who was inspired by the 1950s 356 Cabriolet, Speedster, and 550 Spyder, penned a design that was touted widely! Porsche then took a note of the Toyota playbook and started sharing parts among its models — eliminating cost prohibitive logistics and manufacturing. Experts say the launch of the Boxster may have saved Porsche from possible acquisition. All said, I liken the 986 and 987 Boxsters to the fabled and historically unloved Porsche 914. The 914, introduced in 1969, was a joint venture between Volkswagen and Porsche who were both looking to replace Porsche’s entry-level 912 and Volkswagen’s Karman Ghia with new models. Available with a mid-mounted 1.7, 1.8 or 2.0 liter air-cooled flatfour; or the upgraded 2.0 liter flat-six, the 914 was a serious sports car for the entry-level Porsche enthusiast. Production ended on these cars in 1976 as Porsche moved toward the front-engine, water-cooled 924. In retrospect,

18 PANDO | March 2018

the 914 was essentially Porsche’s “stepchild.” Purists would refer to the car as a “Volkswagen” and weren’t necessarily popular on the “pre-owned” market. For a long time you could pick them up at a reasonable price, but not necessarily any more. Some people think the same could be said for the current crop of 986s. Not seen as collectable, not physically built in Stuttgart, and a flood of mass production (remember, it did save Porsche,) the car now sits in used car lots much like the 914 did in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Regardless, the DNA is a Porsche, and by default, makes them fun cars begging to be driven! So consider, just like those “would-be enthusiasts” in the 80’s, the 986 offers a lot of performance and intrigue for the current crop. It should be mentioned that similarly, the first run of water-cooled, rear-engine 911’s were also introduced at the same time (1999-2005) as the Boxster. The 996, as it is known, is also a sports car bargain at the moment, as some consider it a stepchild of the 911-set. So I started to think - on a limited budget, looking for Porsche performance, missing the badge in my garage, and hungry to get back on a race track — what to do? Research of local available cars led me to a used car dealer in Santa Ana called Western Motors. They were a nice bunch of guys — clearly understanding the car business and selling the typical variety of higher mileage “nicer” luxury, sports cars and SUVs. Similar car dealers are across the US and personally, I prefer dealing one-on-one with people in private sales. The car I found was a dark metallic “Seal Grey” 986 with a grey top and interior sporting 151,000 miles on the clock. Risky? Heck yes! However, I spent a great deal of time working on the car to create exactly what I wanted. I pressed every button, turned on every light, put the top up and down, checked the oil (carefully), looked for leaks and checked all the accessories. It’s a damn nice car! The CARFAX suggested it had never been in an accident and had four previous owners. It was clear the owners loved the car too. It was obviously well maintained and the body and original paint (with some patina here and there) was in great shape. When it finally came time to drive the car, I found it very tight in the steering and suspension and the eager 2.7 flat-six “Boxster” motor felt peppy and alive. The one caveat was noise coming from the catalytic converters. This is not unusual for a car of this age

and mileage. Clearly, the baffles were on the way out — and despite a recent successful SMOG check — would be something I would consider in my offer. When the proprietor of Western Motors, Sam, and I sat down, we had a negotiating session that could have moved the roof off the place! When done, we seemed both satisfied (a good negotiation is when both parties have given something up,) shook hands and congratulated each other on the brokering of the deal. I got the car for a price that would leave me with some budget to make any minor repairs and build the car up a bit. Needless to say, these cars really are a bargain! Regardless, after the deal was done, I drove the car home very gingerly — feeling, listening, smelling every possible nuance of the car. I stopped at a parts store before even getting to my garage — to buy two gallons of Mobil 1 10W-40 and a filter. An oil change would continue to ease my mind — or give me more reason to worry. Thankfully, in draining the oil and inspecting both the magnetic drain plug and filter, I was pleased to see nothing but oil. No contaminants, no metal shavings. Being under the car also gave me a chance to take a look at the motor from below (looking at the top is a process and I’ll explain later) and get a visual of the driveline and exhaust. A quick “tap test” of the muffler and cats, with a mallet, revealed the source of the minor exhaust rattle — the baffles in the cats. 300 miles later, including some very spirited drives, I’ve truly felt some confidence in the car being mechanically sound. The clutch feels good. The brakes work, and inspection shows plenty left. The steering remains tight and the handling is solid. I also checked and added air pressure to the tires — two different sizes front and back that is typical of Porsche. The car will drift a bit in hard cornering, but the nearly 50/50 balance of the car makes for drive-ability similar to my former race car with a tinge of 911 rotation-like handling. One thing most new Porsche owners immediately freak about is Porsches emit numerous smells. One time you will smell burning oil. The next, burning plastic. Panicked searches to well attended online forums and chatrooms reveal “Eau de Porsche” or “Porsche Perfume.” Believe it or not, these machines are just Panzer tanks with sexy bodies.

Speaking of the body, I really wanted to see how good the paint was on this car. There was some minor patina on the hood and front clip, a silver dollar-sized chip on the left front fender and two small gouges on the rear clip, right in the middle. For a car with 150,000 miles, that seems pretty darn good. Like with every car, I took to washing with Meguiar’s Wash Plus.I was glad I tried it. It’s an efficient method that doesn’t require bucket-mixing with water. I added some of the formula directly to a sponge then rinsed off. Wash Plus cleans and removes dirt, bugs and tar, and Meguiar’s says will even safely polish away light scuff marks. It did the job, and saved me some time. The car looked clean. But after washing, the paint still felt rough to the touch. Running my hand along the body, I could feel plenty of contaminants in the paint. The solution for this is (at least for me) DREADED clay barring. I HATE clay bar! It is time consuming, finger cramping and just a hassle. Thank goodness Mother’s has developed the Speed Clay 2.0! It’s fast, far less aggravating, and the results were amazing! The sponge mouse-like prep tool has patented rubber polymer technology that quickly shears off and removes both surface and embedded contaminants. I liked this product so much that I did my wife’s minivan too — with amazing results! In the end, I was really enamored with the Grey Metallic paint on this car. It really does look nice. Lastly, and in a tribute to James Dean and the 550 Spyder that killed him, I added a “Little Bastard” insignia to the rear. So far so good, right? Well there are numerous nuances to these cars that keep owners awake at night. In the next installment, we will discuss catastrophic failure potential through the infamous IMS Bearing! Stay tuned!

GT3 Family Experiences Story and Photos by Wayne Davis 20 PANDO | March 2018

S

hortly after buying my GT3, my daughter and her family came down for a visit. As expected, I let my son-in-law drive my newly acquired prized car. Didn’t think much more about it, but later my daughter told me she was upset that she was not given the opportunity. So I had to explain to her that she did not know how to drive a “stick”. This kind of satisfied her, but she came back with a challenge. She asked if my grand kids learned to drive sticks, would I let them drive the GT3? I said of course.

my 2000 Red 6 speed Carrera to the banquet. I didn’t say yes or no. I kept him in suspense until the day of the banquet. His date arrived and he was preparing to take his red Mustang, when to his total shock, I handed him the keys to the Porsche. Earlier I had cleaned it all up for the occasion. They were both in shock he’d be driving the Porsche to the banquet.

My daughter and Porsche stories go way back. The most significant of these stories is one involving my first Porsche, a 1977 Targa having a full spec 2.7 RS motor and special gear box. One Southern California typical clear summer day, I decided to take the car out for a drive, so of course, I washed the car and took the Targa top off. Upon completion, I decided to go in and shower. Not thinking anything about it, I left the newly washed car in the middle of the driveway. I was in still the shower when my daughter yelled at me that she hit my car! I thought she was joking, but she was NOT. My daughter had a habit I couldn’t seem to break. She would put her car in reverse, start reversing and ONLY THEN look back. On that day, she hit my car before even looking back. How she could never have seen it sitting in the bright sun, I will never understand. Needless to say, she pretty much stayed at the beach the entire weekend. As I told my friends; it was a near fatal parking accident.

Meanwhile, back to Chase and Audrey. They got in the car as the entire family gathered outside taking pictures and videos to document this big event of Audrey driving a Porsche GT3. After strapping in, setting up the mirrors and seat, she started the car and then immediately stalled it. After getting it running again, they slowly departed. While they were out, the entire family was pacing. The longer they were out, the more concern there was of some kind of incident. Then about 20 minutes later, there they were driving up the street all safe and sound. Afterward, Chase said she’d barely exceeded 55 mph. Audrey said she was very nervous about driving such a powerful car, but was grinning ear to ear. It was a great event.

Around a year ago my daughter Lisa, told me my granddaughter Audrey, had learned to drive a manual. She reminded me of my promise to let Audrey drive the GT3. I told her I would, but I wanted her to have some experience driving first. So, after Audrey had been driving for about a year at one our family get togethers, I told Audrey she gets to drive the GT3! To reduce any undue pressure on her, I decided to let Chase, my youngest son, ride with her instead of me. I trusted him fully to go along for the drive. He had just received his Masters in Bio-Medical Engineering. He’d also garnered that trust while in High School; an interesting story also. Chase was the Drum Major his senior year in the High School band (Grapevine, Texas). Every spring they had a big band banquet. It was almost like a prom as the members would all get dressed up. It was a big deal for these teens. Well, a couple of weeks before this banquet, he started dropping ‘not so subtle hints’ about taking

The next day, he told me he was very nervous driving the car, and he confessed in the parking structure, he’d revved the engine to hear it. I smiled and said I would have too!

Moving forward two years, now my grandson Andrew is driving. He also learned to drive a manual, so Lisa asked if Andrew was going to get to drive the GT3. I planned on letting him get his big ride when they came for Thanksgiving dinner this year. My wife, Debbie, was so afraid that a male teenager would wreak havoc on the community, she insisted I go with Andrew, not Chase. After adjusting the seat and mirrors, Andrew was ready. He started the car with no problems, but stalled it twice. Audrey was away at college at North Colorado State, so unfortunately, she was not present, but I made sure she got the word that her brother had stalled out twice to her once. During the later part of the drive, I told Andrew to shift down to second and then, when it was really clear of traffic, told him to floor it. When we reached the speed limit (Okay, probably more), I had him get off the throttle. That short burst of acceleration made his day. In those brief seconds, he kind of understood the special feeling that Porsche is all about. I hope these experiences will be remembered by them as a very joyous family experience. I also hope that someday, one or both will be in a place where they too can own and share such a great automobile with their grandkids. March 2018 | PANDO 21

Porsche: Capturing the Dream and Creating Forever Family Memories

Pride of ownership.

Like any kid, my dad wanted a Porsche, and I liked cars. Around 1986, my dad bought a 944. My brother and I did irresponsible speed runs on La Palma before there was an east Yorba Linda to speak of; meaning, everything a 17-year-old kid would love to do with a car. My neighbor up the street in Yorba Linda sold me his ‘66 Fiat 1500 Convertible. I scoured the back streets of Rome as an exchange student finding a generator. Back state side, I drove the car once. Since I was going to college in Wisconsin, I was forced to get rid of the Fiat 1500 due to lack of storage space and money. I gave it away to Snows Auto near ‘The Circle’ in Orange. I think I recently saw the car on auction but couldn’t find a copy of my original title to confirm. Anyway, how many California titled maroon 1500s can there be?

24 PANDO | March 2018

Fast forward thirty years. I saw my Yorba Linda neighbor, who’d sold me the Fiat, at a funeral for another neighbor. “Martha’s making me sell the Boxster, Paul, are you interested?” I’d known over the years that Jim had a Boxster, but had only seen it garaged at Christmas parties. He dangled an unbelievable bargain price before we left the reception. Of course I was interested. A month later, April 1, 2016, my wife was in the final months of battling a 5-year brain tumor. Forgive me for making lemonade from lemons, but almost as a rebellion against the tumor and the doctor’s appointment I knew was, “it was it,” we went to Yorba Linda that afternoon to test drive the car. My friend’s son tossed me the keys. Top down, sun out, the push of the mid-engine past 4000 rpm as we zoomed around East Lake.“I like

it,” she said. By this time in her illness, Melanie wasn’t able to go on long walks or ride her bike through Santiago Canyon like we had done for years. But we could both really feel the car, the engine, the movement in the turns. Maybe it was like a kid thinking of getting his mom a baseball glove for Christmas, but really, it was a bit of therapy for both of us. I wanted to drive the car more, take Melanie out to enjoy the time we had left with the top down and feeling the world around us driving the roads of Orange County. I told Jim I’d buy the car. On the day I was ready to transfer the money, he called and said, “I just can’t sell it.” He’d owned it since he bought it on his 50th birthday, and was moving from his house in Yorba Linda. Perhaps it was too much to give up. Or he was, as parents do, watching out for me. Not the right time.

Story and Photos by Paul Curran

- Melanie takes our picture on the test drive.

Melanie passed away in July. Later in the month, “Hi Paul, this is Jim. Tell you what. I’ll lower the price $500 in case you need to get some work done.” Having casted about for a bit in the previous weeks, I was thrilled. I met him at his house and took possession of the car on a handshake.

A true “handshake” deal. Jim lets his baby go after 20 years.

Melanie in 2013.

The smart phone you rely on is really hard to use if you have a brain tumor. On that test drive in April, I’d asked Melanie to take some photos of the Big Event. She managed to get one shot of us driving together. I’ve taught my son and three girls to drive the stick shift in the Boxster. My younger 12-year-old son Henry, gets the most seat time, and shifts from the right seat. Sometimes I reach over and imagine that I’m holding her hand, like we did on that one day.

New Windscreen Installation for 1997 993 Targa Story and Photos by Jim Falk

I have a 1997 Targa 993 that needed a new

windscreen. The car is almost a classic and the windshield problem is a classic one. The Guards Red Targa has 76,920 miles and she has many more to go. However, as most of us can imagine, some of this car’s elements needed replacement, both mechanical and cosmetic. The car is in very good condition, competitive in wash and shine and I’ve replaced and maintained all of the necessary and some not-so “necessary” items probably in a too aggressive manner. She’s been maintained by OCR Club members and sponsors, and this includes tires, brakes, sensors and fluids. Well, the windscreen was finally really getting to me, star bursts when driving into sunlight and with on-coming headlights, rain, cleaning the windscreen, etc., etc. The issue for me was the attempt to find a German manufactured windscreen for a 1997 Targa, as well as a qualified installer, and hopefully at a reasonable price.

My effort to find the “same” windshield was a bit hampered by the fact that the German manufacturer Pilkington, had bought the Sekuit Company, so the new unit would not have the previous mark on the window itself. The good news is that the Pilkington Company continues to have the ’97 993 model windscreen available. Then I checked around to find an installer to handle the job and I found a company 28 PANDO | March 2018

(Safelite) in Irvine that I believed would be a good choice. The point is, my experience was that I found a good location in Orange County who provided excellent service that our members may want to check out if they are searching for a windshield for their older, and maybe even newer Porsche - when they’re researching sources and comparing this type of service.

RICE’S

Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice

DAN the MAN to go FAST DAN GURNEY or as we saw him on track, # 48. More than a legend. Because he was the American who won races all around the world, and yet he was always friendly, humble, and an Orange County Icon – a good guy! Godspeed to you, Mr. #48.

PORSCHE ELECTRONICS:

Having replaced the T.S.S. (Turn Signal AS we are drug slowly into an electronic world of cars, and pretty much everything else, I am glad to see more and more skepticism for releasing the steering wheel to some silver box full of micro electronics, wires, and chips we can never understand what they are, let alone how they work. I see more and more in automotive magazines, and now even in aviation, a call to slow down the commitment to giving our control to something we don’t understand and allowing ‘it’ to make decisions for us. I believe we have been slowly robbed of our ability to have full control and understanding of our own machines, even our Porsches. Now, I do realize we need some of these new automated machines so we can easily move from one place to the other, or just cruising for the enjoyment of it. First going back a bit, I remember my grandfather telling us about how they

loved the new electric starter-motor in their automobiles, and no wonder. Have you ever hand cranked a combustion engine? I have. It is risky. Get it wrong and you can end up with a broken arm. Moving onto automatic transmissions! Wonderful and now refined to outperform manual, but still automatics are still heavier “lumps.” That’s a fact, and my opinion. Then: ABS: Fantastic, as well as automated brake warning, etc, etc. I think first we need to better understand just what we have in our Porsches and how they got there. In the new (Feb 2018) “Excellence” Magazine, the ‘other’ Porsche magazine, is a very informative article about Porsche electronics. This is an overview from the 356, 901-911, later G-Series (1974-1998) 911s, and all newer Porsche models. Especially valuable is the detail which is covered on the later electronic Porsches from 1990 on. Special emphasis is explained about the latest of all

models which are now too many to even list separately. Excellence for February 2018, page 105, you will find: “VOLT, AMPS & OHMS,” by Chris Andropoulos, with nice photos from Porsche. I hope more PCA members will pick up a copy of this particular article and read it. It isn’t an easy read, it took me 3 tries to get through it, and no wonder as it explains a lot of new things in 4 pages. This article is so relevant for anyone with a 2000 or newer Porsche, you may get an idea of what has gone on in those silver boxes of your Porsche. After I re-read mine, highlighting and underlining, I carefully pulled it out of the magazine and put it in a clear plastic 3- ring sheet protector and in my “electrical file” folder. WHY? Even though I work on most electrical systems, since 1984, they began to be mostly computer, (Motronic) controlled. So, I must troubleshoot by the service manual’s step-by–step and find the faults. That works most of the time up to the 996, then it nearly becomes a dealer, or wellequipped and trained service-repair shop, and that is expensive. Almost everything requires diagnostics to start anything and it’s a good thing too, as “Volt, Amps & Ohms” explains why. Andropoulos went to lengths to explain how the modern Onboard Data Networks, CAN Data, DME, PSM, FlexRay data bus, and get this one: “fiber-optic MOST”: (mediaoriented-system-transport) networks works. I’m still learning what these are, and so glad my 911 Turbo Hot Rod doesn’t have to deal with any of this stuff. The last part: Electrical System Service & Repair. Things like how the strategy of the batter charging system is set to evaluate the battery and charge it according to the battery diagnose? Tired or worn batteries March 2018 | PANDO 41

draw higher charging load but they can’t handle them so the computer meters a charge rate according to what the battery can actually use. And during deceleration, the e.c.u. puts out a higher charging load to the battery to lessen the load on the engine in normal running. I never knew that? And these computer needs to be programmed to what your battery is capable of accepting from the alternator, so a reset is required. I didn’t know that either. Also, is a sad part of just WHY rodents just love to munch away your tasty 1990 electrical wiring. NOT NICE! I personally know of a beautiful 964 Carrera RS America that was factory picked up, driven through Europe, back home, had it’s post new service done, and driven regularly and rests in a nice Palos Verde, humidity controlled, secure, garage. There it sat, unfortunately, where it became a gourmet meal for rats. Discovered after recovering from an illness, the pristine RS took, I believe, near $30,000 of insurance repairs for an all-new wiring and interior. California Rats also love the German leather. Sickening I know. I’ve repaired engines and Porsche insides that were rat homes. Disgusting!! NO more need be said. But every newer Porsche owner should have a copy of Volt, Amps & Ohms. This may help a Porsche owner have at least, some idea of what systems are in your Porsche, and the terms and verbiage your technicians will use to explain your Porsche’s misbehaviors to you, someday.

Thank You; Steve Chew, Pete, and Nate at Circle Imports, Porsche. I was mostly curious as to what this was all about. “01” the first one explains what “The Porsche Classic Catalog” is and how it came to be. And these are not lightly skimmed-over articles. I was pleasantly surprised at the detail and attitude from a Porsche publication. 42 PANDO | March 2018

PORSCHE CLASSIC : ORIGINALE 01 & 02 I EN-US

PORSCHE CLASSIC : ORIGINALE - pages with Part Numbers

My ORIGINALE 01, that’s how they spell it-with an “E” on the end, was from 2016 and it is a hardbound book, 93 pages, so the last page is numbered: “P20160193” (you notice the 01 in the middle somewhere) PS 02 is larger, more good stuff, so the last page is “201702P125,” ya got’a get acclimated to how they number these things. It has 8 sections, Editorial, then articles; some very old but recovered lost information and insights filling in more of the how and whys of our Porsches’ histories. Technical parts are explained specifically for old parts that were developed from long lost blueprints, or just old manufacturing technology, and now making replacements the same old way would be cost prohibitive. However, doing reverse engineering and almost long-lost craftsmanship now long gone, parts are newly made with new manufacturing techniques that make a stronger, longer lasting, cost reasonable, and

yet looking the same as coming out of a 1958 Porsche box, only its better. And now all the data is stored in safe digital data banks not dusty old blueprint files. Example is in the 02, 2017’s: Nr. “356 41023 644 331 063 00” sounds exciting doesn’t it? IN FACT IT IS! For 356 owners wanting the impossible to find racing aluminum brake drums with cast iron rings. Now they are available, newly manufactured, by modern methods. Some parts are reversed engineered, some on 3D printed for mock ups, and some just revising the existing original plans, and so on. The article fully explains the details of why and how this all came to be. Back in 01 (2016) another interesting article is about the Porsche hood crest. How it came to be and how it was originally made. Now Porsche Hood Crests are being made again in every different type, exactly as it once was done before, and that means not some robot whipping them out, but made by hand!

This means the same original red-orange hue for the early hood crest as well as different shades for later Porsches. Don’t let anyone sell you an old, no longer available, hood crest for a robber’s price saying: “they don’t make them anymore,” because THEY DO! Once again “ORIGINALE” explains exactly the way it once was done and now, again done with exacting hand enameled’ precision, and that is a special trained artisan using a special pen to insert the exact amount of special color, in exactly the right place where it is supposed to go. Not everything is done by robotics, as Porsche realizes some things will always require respected SKILL! PS there are Part numbers for the 356: Nr. 644-559-921-002 The 924, 928, 944, 968, 911G, (1974 -1989) & 959, 964.): Nr. 910. 559. 210. 26. The 911F, 911 G (1974): Nr. 901.559. 201.27. And 993, 986, 996: Nr. 996. 559. 211.01. How about light-weight body panels for the 901 and 911 body? Or, upgrading the 993 struts & shocks because the originals have proven to not be up to today’s needs. A full article as to why and what are needed, and so much better with the new ones. So much more and I imagine these will be hard to find, but they are free from dealers especially those involve with the “PORSCHE CLASSIC PARTNERS.” 02 shows there are 49 partners throughout the world. In the USA, close to the O.C., is PORSCHE SOUTH BAY, Hawthorne, Ca., so they are at least are not so far anyway. I do so hope there will be more coming soon.

The Schrader-type rubber inflation valve is the rubber type, it is very flexible and with the angel of the valve stem, it leans toward the outside of the wheel. When driving, with increasing speed, the valve bends over and downward. I have seen marks on the wheel from metal valve caps touching the wheel. Porsche made these self-sticking alloy “supports” to hold the rubber valve upright. It apparently does not work with the added weight of a metal valve cap! I think it is a poor idea, and I strongly recommend using all-metal inflation valves, and quality light metal caps with good rubber seals in them. When running at Riverside, we had an occasion to get lectured about this very thing, and as proof we were told to precisely check our tire inflation and then just run two laps only, with no cap installed on the left rear wheel only. I already had done this and noticed a pound or two lower air pressure (actually dry nitrogen) on the one wheel without the cap. The spinning wheel actually pulls the spring loaded valve core down, just enough for a tiny bit of ‘air’ to escape. And I also noticed after a run on the long course when I took the cap off to check air pressure, I noticed when it was very quiet: I heard a small “pisst!” just as the cap was loosened, air escaping from under the cap that got out of the metal wheel Schrader valve/tire at speed. NO High Performance car should ever have rubber inflation valves in them.

blasted through the nozzle after using it, and it still gets clogged? So, you take the can back and try to get a refund and new paint. Home Depot is pretty good about this, as their bar code informs them of when, where, what, you bought, and how you paid for it. But sometimes “No Joy,” it’s not theirs! Bummer. So, you need to buy another can. However, Amazon has Rust-oleum spray caps available, I think $3-$5. You would think a good store would have these caps available?

Are these guys crazy jacking up a 911 under the engine? Answer next month, which you know is April!?

We answer questions, inquiries, and comments. LET’S HEAR FROM YOU! Godspeed

Up-fixen der Porsche 17-03: A question again on those pretty metal sleeves and valve caps put over the rubber inflation valve stems on Fuchs wheels:

Leslie Rice PCA-OCR Technical Editor riceturbos@sbcglobal.net

ITEM 1 : The question came up as one Porsche owner asked about another Porsche 930 Seen in picture below.

Amazon replacement spray caps, and they work great!

Rubber inflation valve with metal cap on valve & bent over support?

ITEM 2 : Get annoyed at getting your used spray can and finding the nozzle clogged and it still has a lot of paint in it? I’ve done the removing of the nozzle off the spray can after using it, and putting the spray nozzle in a closed jar of solvent. Most of the time it doesn’t work. I’ve also tried poking dried paint out of the spray end, no help most times. And giving a shot of shop air

Thought for the month: For Heaven’s sake just DRIVE IT!

Rice’s Ramblings: Ask a Mechanic If you have a question about your Porsche, please send in your question to Lee at - riceturbos@sbcglobal.net

In case you misserd it, The Grand Tour’s 6th episode of the 2nd season aired last Friday. One of the humorous segments blasted jaguar and was filmed in Western Colorado at the Gateway Canyon Resort. They drove on the same highway following the Delores River that last Spring’s Mighty 5 Tour enjoyed a “spirited” drive on. Fun road, indeed. With the amount of snow at Telluride, it looks like they may have been there near the same time we were. PCA-OCR, always on the “cutting edge.”

One of my favoite things about Porsche is the amazing usability of these sports cars. They perform exceptionally on road and track, but also have the verstility and toughness to handle a large variety of environments. This weekend, I took my 2003 986 Boxster S up to Big Bear and had an epic tme driving around with the top down. The mountain roads were breathtaking in the convertible, and I got plenty of thumbs up for driving around with the top dowm in sub 30 degree weather! With the heater on full blast and some heavier clothes, the road was perfectly comfortable. It was also quite fun to overtake all the 4x4s on the few passing lanes available!!!
