W
hen December rolls around, I immediately think of Christmas, and how quickly it got here! When suddenly, five months later it’s May. May means, Mother’s Day! MOM! Flowers, candy, brunch? This message is dedicated to MOM – with or without a Porsche. Your mom, my mom, maybe you’re a mom, maybe your daughter is a mom, regardless of which mom meets this criteria. Here’s a salute to you!
Yep, my mom wore army boots and can still fit into her uniform!
Mom went back to College and earned a Master’s Degree in English and History. Quite an accomplishment for her gender and age. She attended College in Colorado, earned a Bachelor’s Degree and saw the poster with Uncle Sam pointing his finger at her! That’s all it took. She enlisted. She was a Sergeant in the Army stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines during WWII, and assigned to the Provost Marshal’s Office. She LOVED being in the Army, made tons of friends and traded her beer rations for Coca-Cola!
At 95, she’s doing okay. She still lives in her Anaheim home where she and my dad raised me and my three older brothers. I think I’ll share a Coca-Cola with her on Mother’s Day! Happy Mother’s Day to all!
(Don’t forget mom!)
SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS AND ADVERTISERS and WIN $250!!
W
ouldn’t it be fun to win $250!?
Since Q4 of last year, the Club has made available sponsor/advertiser cards, “driving value”. All you have to do is patronize one of our sponsors /advertisers you see in the Pando, and have them verify your service! The sponsor/advertiser then completes the back of the card and you bring the completed card to any Board Member (Board Members wear white badges).
Your card then gets added to the ‘hat’ and a chance to win $250. Winner of $250 is drawn at the end of each quarter at the Breakfast Club Meetings! It can’t get any better than that! Support our sponsors / advertisers and win a chance at $250!!

LETTERFrom the Editor “I always tell a first-time fan – they need to see it live; See firsthand the passion, the speed, the physicality, the buzz in the building”
Story by Marcia Salans Photo by Dick Sartor
Sounds like a true Porsche fan overheard at the recent spectacular Circle Porsche of Long Beach’s launch party prior to the 2017 Long Beach Gran Prix profiled on page 12 doesn’t it? Yes, passions consistently run deep throughout our PCA-OCR membership’s love of our Porsches, sponsors, events; but the quote is actually from Chris Pronger - Defensemen, 2007 Anaheim Ducks Stanley Cup champions. A similar passion runs deep throughout the current Stanley Cup Playoffs (Go Ducks!) and throughout this entire 2017 May Pando! You’ll read about our own Bob Weber’s hard fought win at the Amelia Island Concours and the incredible roller coaster of emotions he and his Team endured until finally capturing the Concours Blue Ribbon and Trophy.

As always, you’ll find many more surprises throughout your 2017 May Pando and as a final salute to this month’s issue celebrating passion, let’s remember two very important dates; Sunday May 14, Mother’s Day and Monday, May 29 Memorial Day. Share, remember and honor those days and what they represent to you, your family, friends and our PCA-OCR community. Best, Marcia Salans

Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington
PORSCHE Boxster and Cayman the Complete Story by Johnny Tipler, published 2016 by Crowood Press, Ramsbury, Marlborough, UK. More than most Boxster books, this provides great homage, in pictures and text, to the 4-cyl, air cooled Spyders. The index lists 9 references to the 550 Spyder, 18 to the 718 Spyder, 5 to the 904, as compared with only 4 references to the 718 Boxster. Coverage of the Boxster and Cayman is quite complete from the Boxster ‘concept’ of the 1993 Detroit Motor Show through the Boxster Spyder and the Cayman GT4, marking the end of the 6-cylinder era for these cars. The “Introduction” provides a very comprehensive summary of the genesis and evolution of the Boxster and Cayman models. Chapter 1 “Antecedents”, deals with the original Spyders, the 910 racer and the 914. Chapters 2-7 deal with the details of the models and the year by year changes, and includes (in Chapter 2) an extensive interview with Harm Lagaaij, Porsche’s Head of Design during the gestation of the Boxster. Chapters 8 & 9 deal with driving and racing/modifying respectively. The Cayman is given incidental mention in the appropriate Boxster year-model chapters, then full coverage in the Cayman-specific Chapter 7. PORSCHE Boxster and Cayman is generously illustrated. Some pictures may look strange because the cars are right hand drive, or are on the ‘wrong’ side of the road. The arch typical twisty drive in this book is ‘The Snake’ not ‘The Tail of The Dragon’. True, the ‘Corkscrew’ at Laguna Seca and ‘The Downhill’ at Lime Rock are mentioned as a prototypes for ‘The Mouse Trap’ at Blister Berg (a track
that is described in detail), but most of the track references are meaningless to Americans. The narrative gives complete description of the evolution of Boxster (and Cayman) design, plus performance factors and aesthetic considerations. The introduction of various options is discussed as well as when some of them became standard. For the less literary inclined there are very comprehensive specification tables inserted in the appropriate places in the text. These tables, provided for every generation and model (and indeed there are many), are gold mines of information for anyone interested in these cars. The chapter “Driving the Boxster and Cayman” is almost more about the local(s) and the road(s) than about the car, its performance and handling, or cockpit conveniences. It is still interesting to read, and gushingly enthusiastic about traveling in a Boxster. Interestingly, this chapter includes something of a comparison test with a 2005 Harley-Davidson ‘V’-Rod’, and a comprehensive race report of the
2014 24 Hours of Nürburgring! Travel references to ‘Route 500’ and ‘A8’ are unfamiliar though acceptable, but the section titled “Rocky Mountain Highs” is somewhat off-putting when it becomes clear that the subject is a 500 mile loop drive in Scotland. The “Competition and Modification” chapter is mostly about companies in UK (and RUF in Germany) that perform modifications or provide aftermarket ‘upgrades’, but the concepts described are applicable whomever the supplier of components. PORSCHE Boxster and Cayman does indeed provide a very complete story of the 6 cylinder Boxsters and Caymans, and contains 192, 8-1/2 x 11 inch pages with many photos and a comprehensive index. It is formatted to be an interesting read as well as an efficient reference book. A must for any dedicated Boxster/ Cayman enthusiast, owner or not. It might be available for $44.95 from your favorite book seller (ask for it), or from http://www.amazon.com/books. May 2017 | PANDO 9

CirclePorsche Throws a Grand Party A
‘Grand’ lady on stilts dressed in race-car attire greeted all attendees at Circle Porsche’s Long Beach Gran Prix Party held at the amazing Porsche Experience Center two nights before the LBGP launched. Our host for the evening was OCR Club Sponsor, Michelle Larsson of Circle Porsche in Long Beach.
Story by Denny Asbury
The guests had full access to the facility and the displays. The access included the main lobby area, which displayed a beautiful 917 in Gulf Racing livery, the service area with an additional display of classic endurance racing Porsches, the restaurant, the coffee shop, the patio viewing area and the balcony. From the balcony, guests could survey the layout of the incredible track and staging areas. Guests could also test their skills in the simulator room where all the simulators allowed competitors to race each other on the virtual racetrack. There were three open bars to serve refreshments of wine and spirits and a constant serving of hors d’oeuvres on multiple tables and by circulating servers. On the pre-grid for the guests to review were the current racing Porsches from the teams racing at Long Beach. The drivers, including Patrick Long, took the time to autograph flags for the guests. One of the highlights of the evening was the unveiling of the new 2018 Porsche Panamera luxury performance sedan. Michelle Larsson and several of the Circle staff presented a review of the new styling features and the added technology of this performance-driven sedan. It was an impressive event and a wonderful “experience” for all the Porsche lovers who attended this special venue. Thank you Circle Porsche and Michelle Larsson. May 2017 | PANDO 13

Story by Steve Eguina, Photos by Paul Novotne If you haven’t been to an OCR Auto-X you should sign up and give it a try! It’s great fun and you’ll discover why “THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE!” Whether you own a 356, 911, Carrera, Boxster or new 991 Turbo, you will become a better driver and can share the day with other Porsche enthusiasts; your spouse, son, daughter or interested friends. Two or three drivers can use the same car. With speeds typically under 50 MPH and nothing but a rubber cone to hit, it’s safe and FUN! Once you arrive at the event, we’ll show you the “ropes”, provide a helmet and an instructor. Come on……….your car is so bored sitting in the garage……..it’s begging to be exercised! What do you have planned for Sunday that could be more fun? Watch Meet the Press?! Go to www.pcaocr.org and register for the next event! You’ll be glad you did!
100 Porsches and even more enthusiasts!
As the morning sun peaked over the hills in the east, it promised to be another great day for OCR members to play with their Porsche’s! OOPS someone forgot to tell the FOG to get out of the way so the SUN could peak over the hill, but fortunately, 18 PANDO | May 2017
by 10:00 am, all was well. The fog left El Toro and the rest of the day was beautiful! On a side note, every year I see more and more father’s and mother’s spending the day with their daughters and sons. What a great family outing……“and we got to drive DAD’s Porsche!” At a foggy 6:30 am, many of the 100+ cars entered in the March 2017 Walter Porsche Auto-X Series event started arriving. (Remember to get to Tech on or before 7:00 am so you can get registered and take advantage of Steve Abbott’s very informative course walk.) The usual coffee and donuts, provided by our Series Support Sponsors – GMG-Global Motorsport Group and MOMO, arrived. At the morning driver’s meeting, important things were announced like our new Event Sponsor GT Technik (more about them later). THANK YOU! Our sponsors take such good care of us so visit them and let them take good care of your Porsche! By the afternoon timed championship runs, everyone had lunch and should have had plenty of practice runs. The PCA rules provide for car classes that range from completely stock Porsches
(which most members drive) as driven off the show room, to full blown race cars. One car that seems to be gaining popularity is the mid-engine Boxster’s and Cayman of all years and models, these cars handle extremely well and are a kick to drive! For example, in the Novice Class Robert Smith placed first in his 1999 Boxster with Brick Stanley 2nd in his 2000 Carrera, and John Griffin 3rd place with his new GT4. Another popular class is CC08. This class is made up of modified cars and consisted of everything from Rod Taylor’s Orange 1969 911T to a 993 C4. The balance of the class were late model “water pumpers” and Pierre Maurier won the class in his 2002 Boxster. With the exception of the popular AX “RUN WHAT YOU BRUNG” class, the next largest Porsche class was CC09. This class is made up of everything from Chris Barrington’s 1986 928S to Dave Waddell’s 1978 911SC, and of course some rear and mid-engine “water pumper’s” of various years and engine placement. As the day concluded the equipment was packed, awards were handed out, everyone was smiling and most drivers headed home for dinner!

A list of drivers and what class they are entered in will be posted on the truck after the first morning runs. It is the driver’s responsibility to make sure you are in the correct class! Most of you will be in what is call the “Stock” class. However, the next class up is referred to as CC. This class can include some factory options so read the rules carefully, or be sure and check with Tom if you are unsure (E-mail: trlbms@hotmail.com). Just about any modification to your car can move you up into class CC, the non-Street Stock class. Also, any tires with a wear rating below 201 will move you out of the Stock Class. DRIVING SKILLS
How To Drive Corners Fast I have been asked to provide a series of articles on how to improve your Porsche driving skills. It is my intent to provide every one of you with the basics on how to drive faster on the track and safer on the roads. Over the next few months we will cover all aspects of being a driving/track enthusiast, from car preparation, to learning the advanced skills necessary for high-speed track driving. While we hope the content of these articles will help to provide you with a great deal of knowledge on driving quickly, there is no substitute for the real life experience our amazing PCA Autocross and Drivers Education (track) programs can provide. Today we will discuss the basics of the racing line. The racing line is the route using the entire track, which a driver follows to take corners in the fastest way possible. While there are quite a few elements that must be performed well when driving through a corner, there are four basic factors that determine the fastest racing line.
Four Basic Factors : 1. Braking Point 2. Turn In Point 3. Apex 4. Exit/Throttle application
20 PANDO | May 2017
Braking Point: No, this is not the point where “you can’t take it anymore.” This is the point, as you approach a turn, where you begin to apply your brakes. This is one factor where Porsche’s have a nice advantage. Because most Porsche’s have a rear or mid-engine layout, the weight of the engine is behind the car’s center of gravity and with the weight of the engine over the rear tires, this causes our cars to “squat” rather than be thrown forward as in a tradition front engine car. This allows our Porsches to stop in a much shorter distance compared to most other car configurations. Also, Porsche has always put larger brakes in their cars compared to other manufacturers to insure Porsche’s braking prominence.
Story by Don Chapman the passenger is terrified”. We will get more into understeer and oversteer and how to control them in later articles.
The best and safest strategy when learning a new track is to brake early, and to gradually shorten the braking distance as you become more familiar with the track and each corner. A famous driver (author) once said that “ the less time spent braking, the faster you will be”
Turn-In Point
The Braking Point is determined by several factors. 1. Obviously, the quality of your brakes. 2. The year of your car, does your car have ABS (antilock brakes)? 3. How quickly are you personally able to slow your car down? It is very important to get all of the braking done before turning into the corner. If you do not use enough brake before entering into the turn, you will experience the terror of understeer. This is where you turn the wheel and your car continues to go straight because you have exceeded the maximum grip of the tires. In describing understeer verses oversteer, it was once told to me “understeer is when the driver is terrified. Oversteer is when
The turn in point is the most important part of the corner, because this will determine how you drive the rest of the corner. The turn-in will determine just where you apex and how fast you will exit. The racing line should start out wide on the approaching outside edge of the track, sweep in to hit the apex (closest Point to the inside corner), then let the car track out and exit
the corner to the outside edge of the track. If you are too late and miss the Turn-In point, the initial part of the turn must be taken so slowly that the time lost cannot be recovered. Turn in too early and you will be hitting the Apex too early, forcing you to continue with the steering input later into the corner where you run out of track. This will also force you stay off the throttle as you try to slow down to tighten your radius to get your car back on line.
Apex
APEX
To understand the racing line through corners, you must have a very good understanding of the term Apex. All experienced drivers will talk about the location of the Apex or hitting the Apex when discussing a corner. The Apex is simply the point where the car’s inside wheels come the closest to the inside of the road. It is also considered the point in a corner where you are no longer turning into the corner, but where you should start unwinding the steering input, driving out of the corner and applying the throttle. Determining the correct Apex for the racing line is key to driving fast through the corners. For the purpose of this article we will discuss three basic Apex points. 1. Geometric Apex RUN WIDE
GEOMETRIC APEX

APPROACH WIDE
The Geometric Apex is simply the constant radius through the corner. This
The Geometric Apex is simply the constant radius through the corner. This is traditionally considered the shortest and fastest way through the corner. The geometric line while considered the fastest, does not allow you to accelerate until you have reached the end of the corner. 2. Early Apex An early Apex is simply the point where the inside wheels clip the inside of the corner earlier than they would with the Geometric center Apex. The early Apex is most used with new drivers because they brake too early causing them to turn in too early. The early Apex is also used when the turn is followed quickly with another turn. This allows the driver to extend the incoming straight and sets the driver up for the next turn. For most turns however, the Early Apex is the slowest way to take a corner. Why? Because it extends the time required for the steering input necessary to rotate the car and delays the time when you could be on the throttle.
that you will spend more time at the braking and acceleration limit and less time at the maximum cornering limit.
Corner Exit/Throttle Application As a general rule, picture a string from the steering wheel to the throttle. As you turn the wheel, the string will pull up on the throttle input. As you straighten out the steering wheel, the throttle input should be increased, and this friends, leads us back to the Apex. No matter where you choose to Apex a corner, as you drive through the Apex point in a corner, you will begin to unwind the steering input. And, as you exit the corner and unwind the steering input, you should be conversely increasing the throttle input. The throttle input should be progressive and smooth. Smashing down the throttle coming out of a corner will, in all likelihood, push the tires beyond their grip limit. LATE APEX

Corner Racing Apex
RACING APEX TURN IN
The late Apex is the point in the turn where the inside wheels clip the inside of the corner later than the Geometric center. For most corners, this is typically the fastest ideal line and is typically called the racing line. Why is this considered the faster line through the corner? With the tighter radius at the very beginning of the corner, you will be forced to enter the turn slightly slower than you would using the geometric apex. But the expanding radius through the rest of the corner allows you to get on the throttle sooner, and results in more acceleration. The added acceleration will give you higher exit speed, and this higher exit speed will be carried all the way down the following straightaway. Driving this ideal line means
There you have it. These are basics of how to drive a corner fast. Of course, practice is the real key to being a better driver. We here at PCA-OCR invite each of you to join us at our monthly Autocross events, as well as our Drivers Education events held at our local tracks. Story by Bob Weber Photos by Deremer Studios and Tom Hankes
The Agony and Ecstasy of Winning
24 PANDO | May 2017
S
ince 1991, I have been participating in Porsche Concours d’ elegance competitions at the OCR region, Zone 8 and national Porsche Parade levels with great success, culminating in four national Performance / Restoration Group awards and the Zuffenhausen Award. Though my goal always, is to win my class, division or group, I have suffered numerous disappointments and losses along the way. The Porsche Parade Concours Competition rules definitely level the playing field and I like that! In 2002, I was fortunate to acquire Peter Gregg’s 1977 Brumos Porsche 934.5— the 1977 Trans Am Championship winner—which hadn’t been publicly seen for 25 years. The original Brumos crew members—Jack Atkinson, Crew Chief and Paul Willison, Chief Mechanic—who successfully raced the car to a championship with Peter Gregg, also restored the Brumos Porsche 934.5 in late 2005 to perfect condition. The seller of the car made me promise to be a “good caretaker of Porsche history”, and Jack and Paul urged me to show the car nationally for the enjoyment of all Porsche race fans, and not just have it sitting hiding in a warehouse. In 2006, curiosity caused me to venture further and go beyond the safety of the Porsche Competition rules into unchartered waters of well-known national Concours d’ elegance events, to
test my skills and the Brumos Porsche 934.5. It won on the race tracks. Could it win on the Concours field? Now - if you are into hard core national level competing in Porsche concouring, there are three prestigious Concours d’ elegances you want to be invited to, listed by longevity: 1. MeadowBrook, now known as the Concours of America at St. John in Plymouth, Michigan. This is the oldest active Concours. We won the Lions Award in 2013 in the “Porsche Street and Race” class. 2. Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance is an objective, but no invitation yet, and then there’s 3. Amelia Island Concours d’ Elegance, now in its 22nd year, that is held on the second weekend of March every year at
the Ritz Carlton Hotel and Golf course on Amelia Island in northern Florida just 30 minutes from Jacksonville. Jacksonville is also the home of Brumos Racing and the former Brumos Porsche dealership. Amelia Island Concours is just as prestigious as Pebble Beach Concours in terms of notoriety, prestige and the ”invitation only” attraction of internationally known automobiles from around the world. Bill Warner, the founder and genius behind “The Amelia”, created something seriously unique in the Concours world. The Amelia is actually a Concours within a Concours, unlike Pebble Beach, with the who’s who of the international automotive and racing world gathering for this unique event. For example, in the 2017 version, Al Unser Sr was the Honoree and his cars that he raced, along with celebrating the Jaguar D Type and featuring the Streamliners,

Porsche 4 Cammers, the Cars of Marmon, Japanese Power race cars and the Cars of Brumos Racing class. Other unique classes exist for prewar and post war automobiles, race cars and muscle cars of the highest caliber hand picked and personally invited by Bill Warner.
THE AGONY......................... The Amelia Island Concours has broken my heart three other times competing with the Brumos Porsche 934.5. High expectations and anticipation were dashed with the reality of 3 invitations and no wins. There is no such thing as a second place at Amelia. We felt the agony of losing in 2006 in the 934/935 Class, in 2011 in the Historic Race Car Class, and then again in 2013 in the Porsche 911 Race Car Class. Huge disappointment rained down on us in 2013 where we lost to the overall 1979 LeMans winning Numero Reserve 935. Provenance and preparation subjectively count at Amelia Island Concours. Bill Warner invited us again to the 2017 Amelia Island Concours to compete in the Cars of Brumos Racing 26 PANDO | May 2017
Friday was the day to unload the Brumos Porsche 934.5 and position it on the Concours field for Saturday’s event. A flat rear slick on the car, when we opened the transport doors, threw all of us into panic. We adapted, shifted plans and made a fast trip to Lowes for an air compressor and tank to remedy the problem. We positioned the car on the field with the rest of the Brumos racing cars Friday afternoon. Again, we detailed the car until sunset and covered it for the evening, protecting it in special plastic fitted covers, since ocean air and early morning dew are typical enemies of any detailing that has been done.
Class. High expectations, anticipation and a strong determination to win were rekindled in my soul and my crew member and nephew, David Hankes. This was a family event involving my sister, my nephew, and great nephew, along with Paul Willison and his wife. It also was a Brumos Porsche, Brumos Racing crew member and family reunion, since the 12 Brumos race cars in this class will never be gathered together again like this. It was an honor and joy to be around and talk with these famous Brumos families that gathered in our Class. Weeks of preparation in California was followed by seven days and nights of further preparation in Florida when the car arrived. Agony and despair filled our hearts as the weather forecast was for 100% rain and high winds on Sunday, the usual day of the Concours. The weather was going to defeat us this year and all the preparation work was in vain. Our Plan B was to leave the Brumos Porsche 934.5 in the transport on Sunday. Luckily the organizers moved the Concours to Saturday, a perfect sunny day in the low 70’s.
As we walked off the field, we surveyed our Brumos class competition. High hopes turned to despair. The rumor was true. The 1973 911 RSR that won the 1973 24 Hours of Daytona, not seen in 45 years, with Peter Gregg and Hurley Haywood driving it, had been flown in from Milan, Italy and was in the class. Provenance counts at Amelia Island. My crew had to dig deep for energy and hope. Our judging crew arrived at 8 am, three very distinguished and well-known Porsche experts on 934.5 and 935 race cars. Head judge, Jack Atkinson, Brumos Racing Crew Chief for Peter Gregg from 1969 to 1980, along with Alwin Springer, one of the ANDIAL founders and former President of Porsche Motorsport North America and Sir John Fitzpatrick, LeMans winner and famous British 935, 962 Porsche pilot for Dick Barbour Racing and John Fitzpatrick Racing. The car was ready and my job was to tell the story, with full documentation and pictures bound in a scrapbook of the Brumos Porsche 934.5 emphasizing its provenance and matching numbers originality. They listened for about 15 minutes and politely walked around the car, looked inside and then proceeded to walk down to the other Brumos cars to judge. No viewing of the perfectly detailed engine and trunk compartments!
Left below : You won’t see these 2 sister Brumos cars again on the same awards field. Left Side: The 1977 Brumos 934.5 driving up to receive our 1st in Class award. Right side: The 1979 Brumos 935 driving away with it’s award.
Without much feedback, we watched in horror as our judges talked with the internationally known Porsche restoration shop owner, Gunnar Racing, representing the 1973 Brumos 911 RSR, for about a half hour about the car. He had documentation to support the fact that the car was the lost 24 Hours Daytona winner of Peter Gregg and Hurley Haywood. The Head Judge, Jack Atkinson, who raced that very car at Daytona in 1973, confirmed it was real. Despair returned to our hearts. The agonizing knowledge of provenance ultimately wins Amelia classes entered our minds. My family and crew members were completely dejected.
.........................................
Now, all Brumos race cars had been judged. The three judges walk briskly past our car, for their lunch break. One of the judges comes up to me and tells me to stay by my car, they’ll be back shortly. Feelings of hope and despair are mixed, as we watch our three judges go off to their meeting to decide the class winner between the 934.5 and the 911RSR.
.........................................
Somberly, two hours later, our three judges approach us, specifically me, with deadpan disheartened looks on their faces. Body language says everything. Alwin Springer, in typical emotionless German fashion speaks to me. “Well Bob, like 2013, I am sorry to say this is just not your year again. Things did not work out for you and your crew, but the car looks beautiful”. I can no longer hear anything else he is saying. My family and Paul Willison have devastation written across their faces. All I can think of is “we’ve lost again at Amelia…” Jack Atkinson approaches me with an object covered in a white towel. All three judges burst out laughing. Simultaneously they say “you just won 1st Place in the Cars of Brumos Racing class”, and hands me a red ribbon. Did they just say we won first in class? None of us can believe our ears! Reality says we didn’t as we proudly display the red ribbon, for the
Amelia Award and lesser importance, on the trunk of the car. The blue ribbon is for the Class winner. Confusion and joyful emotions race through all of our minds. The three judges were done “goofing on me” and call for a picture of us with the first place winning Brumos 934.5, then leave. None of my crew believes we pulled this off and finally “cracked the nut” of The Amelia. But, we have a red ribbon - The lesser award. 2 pm in the afternoon and we go off to lunch. We pass by the 911 RSR in the Cars of Brumos Racing class. Again to our horror, the 911 RSR sports the blue ribbon for first place winner. A large crowd is congratulating Gunnar Racing for a first place win representing the Italian owner of the 911 RSR. Emotions sink to basement level within us. We didn’t win the class, we think. The 911 RSR did. The three judges misspoke. We sit eating, numb and dazed from the emotional rollercoaster. We accept our fate, dejected, until we receive a cellphone call from my great nephew, Tony, who is still by the Brumos Porsche 934.5. Tony says “Uncle, come back quickly. A man is taking your red ribbon off the car and replacing it with a blue ribbon. Is that ok?” Is that ok?? Heck yes! We race back to find out Gunnar Racing, in a show of great sportsmanship and comraderie, switched the ribbons with us. We received the proper blue ribbon for 1st place win in the Cars of Brumos Racing class. Similar to the recent Academy Awards Oscar snafu, they recorded this moment on Instagram (See the Amelia film at gunnarracing on Instagram). Ecstasy and total satisfaction of winning Amelia Island Concours has finally arrived!
THE ECSTASY......................
All first place class winning and corporate award cars are driven up the reviewing stand row to receive their rewards. I see the emotion well up in the watery eyes of Paul Willison and his wife Sherry. The same is true of Jack Atkinson. We are
over-the-top happy and soon to be honored at the reviewing stand. Out of respect, I ask Paul Willison to drive the car up and I will ride on the passenger side floor boards. Paul and Jack witnessed in person, with Peter Gregg, the greatness of this 1977 Trans Am Championship winning Brumos Porsche 934.5. They both poured their love, hearts and souls into restoring the car! It only seems fitting for Paul Willison to drive the car up to receive its award with me. An amazing photo shows the Brumos 917-10, followed by the 1979 Peter Gregg IMSA Championship winning 935 followed by the 1977 Peter Gregg Trans Am Championship winning 934.5. A sight you will never see again and is burned deeply into my memory. The Amelia Island Concours, 4th attempt at one of the finest national Concours, next to Pebble Beach, has finally given us a hardfought win.
Ready for Judging. The Crew. Bob Weber, Sherry and Paul Willison, David Hankes
It is hard for me to describe the incredible disappointment of losing a major national Concours after months and many long hours of preparation, planning logistics and detailing. It is equally indescribable the sheer joy and ecstasy of winning the Amelia Island Concours against three internationally known and highly respected restoration shops. The impossible finally happened! PCA-OCR Members – You’ve got to put The Amelia on your bucket list!! May 2017 | PANDO 27

Cone Zone Update by Rob Greene
Thank you to all who have participated in the previous two cone zone series. We hope it has added to the enjoyment of the Breakfast Club meeting at Original Mike’s. We’ll continue color exercise, model types and different types of equipment. A special thank you to everyone who provided ideas for this third color zone series. The plan for the monthly Cone Zone themes follows: • May: “Color Sorting” • June: “Color Sorting” • July: Red, White, and Blue • August: All Cabriolets • September: All fixed rear wing Porsches (includes whale-tails, duckbills, Tequipment, aftermarket, GT-2, GT-3, auto-crossers etc.) • October: Any Porsches with 15” – 17” diameter wheels • November: Any Porsches with 18” diameter wheels • December: Any Porsches with 19” diameter wheels • January 2018: No Porsche Alley Cone Zone – Attend the OCR Brunch! • February 2018: Any Porsche with 20” and up diameter wheels
May-June
sorted and nearly everyone gets to park in a Cone Zone! We’ll try this for three meetings and then move on to Red, White and Blue for the July meeting.
The first Porsche to arrive at Original Mike’s gets to park anywhere in the lot. The driver/passenger grabs a cone from the stack of cones and puts it in front of their car to establish the first color group. So, if the first car is red, all red cars should park in the same area.
Other months
Are you wondering what “color sorting” is? Well, here are the suggested “rules”!
The next different colored car to arrive in the parking lot needs to park away from the first established group. The driver/passenger will put a cone in front of their car to establish the second color group. If the second different color car is blue, all blue cars should park in the same area, etc.
We hope July 2017 - February 2018 is self-explanatory. For July, anyone with a red, white, or blue Porsche can park in the Cone Zone. What better month to show off the topless group than August? September should provide a lot of different looks, from earlier Porsche whale tails to au currant GT-3 and 4 wings, original or after-market. Then the multitude of Porsche and non-Porsche wheel types displayed in OctoberDecember 2017 and February 2018 for all to see.
This process will continue until we run out of cones, colors, Porsches, or time. We end up with groups of colors, nicely
I hope we all continue to have fun with the Cone Zone. Don’t forget to check the Pando for any schedule revisions.

Story and Photos by Larry Moore S u nday, March 19, 2017, the day before
the First Day of Spring, Gloria and I awoke to the sound of Fog Horns! Yes, lately the Weather God(s) have been acting very strange, and this morning’s on-shore breeze pushed the coastal fog all the way inland to the foothills behind Santa Ana and Irvine. As Gloria and I drove south on the 73 Tollway over the coastal foothills to the tour starting location in San Juan Capistrano, we looked down on the spectacular fog blanketing Irvine, Lake Forest and Mission Viejo; very impressive! When we pulled into the shopping center parking lot on the southeast corner of the Ortega Highway and Rancho Viejo Road, the fog was rapidly clearing and we realized we had a really good member turn out for the tour. I was expecting, maybe, 20 cars and we ended up with 35. Following 30 PANDO | May 2017

wove our way through this very nice recent development in the southeastern portion of Temecula to arrive at the Pechanga Resort and Casino.
The route was really quite simple. Departing San Juan Capistrano on the Ortega Highway (Hwy. 74), we proceeded 30 miles over the mountain to Lake Elsinore. Here we paused to gather-up and take some photos. Next, we made one left turn, one right turn, and then one left turn onto Bundy Canyon Road.
Because of all of the recent rains, the entire route was much greener than normal and wildflowers were evident most everywhere along the route.
Bundy Canyon Road is the first of several roads (Scott, Washington, Borel, Buck, Warren) and finally Rancho California, that seamlessly link together to loop north, then east, then south into north Temecula. At the intersection with Butterfield Stage Road, we turned left and proceeded south into the Blackhawk neighborhood and
We arrived at Pechanga at approximately 11:30 am, parked atop the parking structure and before dispersing into the cavernous resort in search of lunch, we agreed to begin the return portion of the tour back to Orange County at 2:00 pm As planned, the members interested in the return portion of the tour gathered atop the parking structure at 2:00 pm and we proceeded south from Temecula down the twisty Rainbow Canyon Road onto Old 395 south into the very pretty hills

of Fallbrook. We followed a winding route in a southwesterly direction through south Fallbrook and Bonsall, to the vicinity of the San Luis Rey Mission before connecting to Highway 76 and Interstate-5. Driving through the Fallbrook area is such a treat on the winding rural roads up and down through the hills lined with the picturesque country estates and the extensive commercial nursery operations. And then, to finish the tour, we drove north up the I-5 across Camp Pendleton and through south San Clemente back into Orange County. This allowed us all the opportunity to improve our technique of 20 mph, bumper-to-bumper, freeway driving; one of the joys of Southern California.
A sincere thank you to all the members who participated because your participation is what drives our club. May 2017 | PANDO 31

RICE’S
Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice
The newest unofficial new 911…? :
I have been reading the newest technology From CAR & DRIVER and who knows who else……? Interesting to still see the familiar ‘face’ of this 911 as we know 911s have changed so much over fifty-two years. It must be a world record for longevity for a rear-engine, aerodynamic, 2+2 sports car, to remain so popular for so many, for so long, and still win races within the top technology developments for all those decades. How many times have we heard the disbelief of some whining writer stating that here again is “the newest 911 with it’s old tail wagging around, STILL with its engine in the rear end, all that weight still hung out over the back end.” Then they kind’a, haft’a, carefully admit something like: “And the 911 (STILL) wins race, after race, after race!” There is something about a 911 that you either hate it or love it. There is no in the middle of the road here. I have seen doctors who drive their specially modified 911 to their office, to show their clientele how “in” they are or how cool or whatever, … only to drive it home and then take their family Buick out on their road trips and Sunday drives. There’s nothing wrong with that either. It is a choice and it is still a neat car to have and drive as you wish. On the other extreme, my brother John told me once –and I never forgot it, and that is: “Some people LIKE to drive a 911 -and some people NEED to drive a 911.”
And he said: ”You are one of those.” I took that smiling and as a compliment, maybe even as a weakness too, as I did need something I could race around in and play with and do my ‘UpGrades’ on to improve or swap out old Porsche parts for newer upgrades or the latest “trick’ racing parts. That is “UpGrading.”That’s what I call it. I loved airplanes and worked on a lot of them and flew them too. If I could, I likely would have lived in hangar, and played with my airplanes in the hangar, flew out of there, slept there, ate there, and lived there too. However, the love of my life, marriage, family, and most of life would not work well - out of a hangar……So my home garage became my ‘hangar’ and my 911 became my ‘airplane.’ With a 911, I could do almost anything; Drive to work every day in rain, cold, heat, wind, heavy traffic, or open road. My 911 only broke down three times in 22 years: twice for the old type pulse type fuel pumps and once because a non Porsche/ Bosch ignition unit quit. But other than that, it just ran and ran and ran. Then PCA, POC, Cobra Club time trials all over California tracks and always, back to work on Mondays. The 911 was the family vacation car too, taking my wife with both kids in back to Monterey or Northern California on vacations. I did many UpGrades and modifications with my “airplane 911” and I never got tired of it. I know of no other car designed and built with aviation engineering standards and yet was as easy to understand and work on - with careful maintenance discipline.
There is nothing else like the 911. The newest 911 will come and go and then be old, in 5-6 years. Hard to believe? We know because we’ve seen it a lot over the recent years–even with the evergreen 911s - Porsche seems to play with its design, just enough to call it “new” and keep cranking them out. But it still is a 911 and that is special to those who love them. The 911 just never gets old. Alois Ruf makes no joke out of his love for the more original Air-Cooled 911s. Much like his 1987 CTR “Yellowbird”.
New RUF Ultimate CTR IV The newest RUF car is nothing like the original 1987 911 under the body design. The new CTR IV has ultimate steel and titanium structure, suspension, and high stress parts. The body structure is carbon fiber. The suspension is all new, more Formula-1 than anything else. Twin inter-cooled engine,… with oh-oh! a water-cooled motor! (well we know it’s better, in many ways, but I like the air cooled ones myself.) So, another take on the 911 and one that will be much sought after. Ruf’s new Carbon body werk…. RUF it seems has for years, had more faith in the 911 design concept, than Porsche has. Many decades ago Porsche was stating they were finished with the old 911 design and were anticipating how much the Americans would love their new V-8 powered 928 and then their new 4 cylinder 924s. Oh how wrong they got that one! And it nearly killed them into bankruptcy! May 2017 | PANDO 37
NEW RUF ULTIMATE - CTR IV ( Hush! It’s really a 911!) seen at Geneva Show 2017
It seems Americans are unreasonably and greatly misunderstood because they faithfully loved the 911 - and still do. Alois took an over ripe old production 911 and “tuned” it to a point where he ended up becoming a manufacturer of “RUF 911’s” and built a twin turbo charged 911 with twin intercoolers, Digital Engine Management - from a Porsche 956 race car, added Ruf (Brembo) huge brakes, Ruf special suspension and Ruf chassis modifications, and took the Porsche 4-speed transaxle – which Porsche claimed could not be made into a 5-speed, ... but Ruf as usual, made his own “Ruf 930/ 5-speed” that propelled the new Ruf 911, now a “Ruf CTR,” to a world speed record of 213 mph+ and in the process, out ran every other car that showed up including Porsche’s hyper technology 959 super car. The 959 went 198 mph. Not only was the CTR fast but handled perfectly, ran on street gas, was quiet enough to take his wife, Estonia on drives around the world, and the CTR is legally registered in Europe. Porsche soon took another hard look at their 911 and upgraded it. And have they ever done that quite well! –Amen

an oil change to un-plug the engine compartment wiring harness connectors and look at the connecting pin contactsboth sides, male and female. I use a wire brush to gently brighten up the male pin contacts and also squirt a small amount of WD-40 on both connector sides. I also do the same for the fuse-relay compartment relay pins and female contacts and recommend you open up the male pin contacts as shown with a safety razor blade to insure better male to female pin contacts. The “Made in China” relays seem to be as good as the “Made In Germany” ones, but I keep spares in the Porsche just in case…. PS. they both use the same part number. I have some old inquires about “valve noise” or “valve clatter” with 993, 996, 997 engines during start up. The automatic hydraulic adjusting feature is a liquid filled chamber that does the actual mechanical work of pushing open the valve against the cam and valve spring, and once done, it is ‘relaxed’, oil bleeds down with a small ‘valve clearance’ and once again to be pressurized by oil pressure and repeat the same process. However, during shut down oil often bleeds down more than during running, and it may take a few seconds to refill up and pressurize again. I have known of one case to take 5-10 minutes to finally quiet down. That is more than annoying! I know of a 996 GT3 owner who hated what he called “start up clatter racket” and tried several cures, but finally sold the GT3….. fed up, done with. - SAD!
I have used LUCAS Engine BreakIn Oil Additive and also good old MARVEL Mystery Oil - these are some examples of highly refined and special additive supplemental oils to help make new metal parts ‘get friendly’ or “break in.” That is a term I do not particularly like, but it was common car verbiage from the ole days! Our new Corvettes and 409s came with a box of Chevrolet ‘break in oil’ that was an excellent oil for new engines and some drag racers used it by the case for extra insurance. This I now know is not necessary, not at all, especially with newer synthetic oils. If your service technician checks out your noisy engine and no issues are found, I would try Lucas or Marvel additive. WARNING: Do not off hand try thicker engine oil! Your engine is designed for a specific oil weight and will not operate correctly with thicker engine oils. We honestly try to answer all questions, inquires, comments, and suggestions. Old Car Breakfast & Tour Tuesday April 4, 2017 The Old Car Breakfast & Tour turned out to be a successful fundraiser for the Fountain Valley Classic Car & Truck Show with about 240-250 attendees. Following breakfast at Applebee’s, the tour went to three locations: Crevier Classic Cars, Tesla, and Hopalong Auto. Thanks to the club members who participated, as the Club supports the Car Show. Hopefully, you will join us in the Porsche Corral at the Car Show in June. Even though it says “Classic”, all Porsches are welcome in the Porsche Corral regardless of age.
