Any resemblance to the car of your dreams is purely intentional. It wears its heritage proudly on its sleeves. And fenders. And roofline. Experience the Porsche Macan S. A 340-horsepower twin-turbo V6, PDK double-clutch transmission and active all-wheel drive with Porsche Traction Management for maximum grip in varying driving conditions. All standard. The Macan S is built around our defining belief that every drive should be unforgettable. And every car should be a sports car. Dream fulfillment begins with a test drive. Porsche. There is no substitute.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Barry Michaels

Location. Location. Location. R

ecently I was reminded just how fortunate we are to live where we live. Mid-day Monday I left sunny, 65-degree Orange County for a next-day meeting. I arrived in Denver and headed to the rental cars. The counter staff at H***z was very friendly; the weather was not. It was dark, the temperature was 1°, and it was snowing. Not the light, fluffy kind of snow you see in the movies but the wet, heavy, sticksto-everything stuff. The rental car was freezing, the wipers were frozen to the car, and the windshield wiper fluid reservoir was empty. I had difficulty seeing through the muck on the windshield. It was rush hour and traffic was bumper-to-bumper; my 35-mile drive from the airport to the hotel took 2 hours. 48 hours later Denise and I arrived in Lihue, HI, and we immediately headed to the rental cars. The counter staff at A**s was very friendly, and the weather (for the moment) was pleasant enough. It was overcast but 74° and very humid. We headed to the north shore and it began to rain, but the wipers worked so everything was good. The weather forecast was for constant rain the whole week but we got a break in the weather the next morning. We skirted the main road and headed the car up the wonderful back road to Waimea Canyon. The road was full of twists and turns and it would have been perfect to exercise a Porsche, except for the 15 mph and 25 mph (maximum) speed limits. Aaarrggghhh, was that frustrating. Hawaii is beautiful, but the speed limits and heavy traffic drove me crazy. We saw only one Porsche during that trip (a Cayenne.) I guess they knew a Porsche would be wasted in that environment. Flash forward a week and we landed back in Southern California. It was sunny, 72°and the traffic out of LAX wasn’t bad compared to the traffic in either Denver or

Hawaii. That said, I’m not going to persuade anyone how lucky we are to spend time on Interstate 5, or 405, or the 10, or 91, or 60, or 22, or anything else at rush hour. Rather, I’m suggesting our location is ground zero for all things Porsche. Within 75 miles of central Orange County (which defines the region boundaries of OCR) we are within the boundaries of seven PCA regions, which gives each of us the opportunity to participate in a smorgasbord of region events. There was something like 854 PCA region events across the zone last year, implying we had access to more than one event a day within a radius of 75 miles. Moreover, the Porsche Experience Center, the California Festival of Speed, and The Porsche Effect at the Petersen Automotive Museum are within that 75-mile radius, as is the U.S. headquarters for Porsche Design. I know our cars have a reputation for being bullet-proof, but if you ever need service we have 13 dealers and a plethora of independent specialty shops within that 75-mile radius to meet your every need. Where else in the world can you even come close to those opportunities? Nowhere that I know, including Germany. In any case, all of that is just the foundation upon which we can build our passion for the Porsche brand. For some, the passion will be realized through performance driving and for others the passion will be found on the concours lawn. For me, joy is found in getting away from the urban areas and enjoying the backroads of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties in either of our cars. Find your passion. It can’t be that far away.

Scenic Central Coast Spring Tour

On Tuesday, March 13, 2018, our spring tour began

at the Porsche Experience Center in Carson. We were welcomed with visitor badges and the opportunity to explore the latest exotic Porsche models and their state-of-the-art facility. This was our last sighting of immaculately detailed Porsches for the next three days!

Our rainy adventure began as we drove north on Hwy 101 to scenic Hwy 154 through the Santa Ynez Mountains. Thanks to Scott Fleener’s local knowledge, we enjoyed a “rest stop” at the Cold Springs Tavern established in 1886 as a stagecoach stop. Our group enjoyed a delicious lunch, surrounded by western history, a warm fire and camaraderie. Tuesday evening, we had a lively get-together sharing stories and getting to know our newest members, Oscar and Pat Dufan, at our hotel in San Luis Obispo. Wednesday morning, our Porsche caravan began with a spectacular drive up scenic Hwy 1 to the Hearst Castle. The skies were clear, and our view of the coastline was breathtaking. As we toured the cold and windy Hearst Castle grounds, it quickly became apparent why the guests of the past wore fur jackets to enjoy the landscape. We huddled together for warmth since no fur jackets were in sight; however once inside, our group began “The Great Room Tour” of Hearst’s retreat named, “La Cuesta Encantada,” Spanish for “Enchanted Hill,” which highlighted 28 years of visionary accomplishments by Hearst and architect Julia Morgan. After the tour as we went to our cars, we enjoyed seeing Barbary sheep and lambs romping across the road as we departed.

Our next destination was the Calcareous Vineyard, one of the highest limestone plateaus on the west side of Paso Robles. The tasting room “Lloyd’s Lookout,” is 12 miles from the Pacific Ocean and perched 1,500 feet above the expansive Salinas Valley. Our lunch at the vineyard was outstanding, culminating with the celebration of Jack and Diane Hunt’s 50th anniversary, and Pete Alexander’s birthday with delicious chocolate brownies. After returning to the hotel, we enjoyed another opportunity to share our Porsche experiences during our happy hour. Later that evening, Karen and George Thagard organized an expedition to explore the culinary delights of downtown San Luis Obispo.

in avoiding a white calf that was on the wrong side of the fence, and deer bounding down the left side of the road. Curt and Rick put the 996s through their paces on Hwy 58. Next, we headed out on the Maricopa Hwy (33) which provided miles of twisty turns winding through the Las Padres National Forest with roads that were clearly designed for Porsche drivers. The “turbo boys” Peter, John and Bob enjoyed a spirited drive on this section of the tour. The Macan drivers were very excited with the twisty roads. After driving through sunlit snow covered pines, we stopped at the Ojai Deer Lodge for lunch. Thanks to Howard Graybehl for acting as the “sweeper” during our drive on Thursday. His reward for a job well done was Sherri volunteered to go topless in their 997 S convertible on Hwy 33.

After a quick radio check Thursday morning, we were off on our adventure to Ojai via Hwy 58 across the Carrizo Plain accompanied by fluffy white clouds overhead. Our radios proved very useful and helped

The Ojai Valley Inn and Spa provided our tour with a VIP Porsche corral. Thursday evening, we tallied the answers to our Porsche quiz awarding C.L Jarusick a five hundred dollar gift certificate for the Porsche Experience Center

donated by Mel Mayuga, service Manager at McKenna Porsche. As dusk approached, we snapped photos of Ojai’s “pink moment” and shared our driving experiences around a cozy fire. On Friday morning as rain clouds hovered over the Topatopa Mountains, several of the tour group members met at the fire pit sharing life stories and enjoying the company of their new friends. Three of the couples extended their stay, while the rest of us reluctantly said our goodbyes and headed back to Orange County. A special thank you to Mel Mayuga, service manager at McKenna Porsche for our Porsche E-Performance backpacks and the five hundred dollar gift certificate to the Porsche Experience Center. Also, a tip of the hat to John Keeling from Griot’s garage providing car care products that’ll help us detail our cars after the rain on the tour.

Passion For The Legend Story and Photo by Morie Hively

T he Porsche has a magnetic attraction, and like children, it’s sometimes hard to describe.

If you drive one, any one, you are sucked in!! Over the years, as far as I’m concerned, I’ve owned some of the finest models, starting with a ‘57 speedster and now a ‘06 Carrera S Cabrio. All of them have been members of my family and treated as such. If I had to pick one my Porsche’s that I enjoyed the most, it would be my 1971 911T Targa. It was always ‘babied,’ and I always enjoyed the fact that, after 118,000 miles, it only had one valve job. In 1983, my brother-in-law talked me into selling it to him with the promise he would give it his best care possible. I’d buy it back in a heartbeat just because we had a great life together. Now, my health limits my social activities, but does not impair my love of the Porsche Brand. Currently, God and I are discussing me bringing my Porsche with me when I go. He’s evaluating my request...

Photo of the 1971 Targa, bought in December 1971 from Circle Motors. 118,000 miles with just a valve job. Loved this car!

Porsche

Experience

T

he Porsche experience is becoming more than just driving, it is a destination. Of course, there is the Porsche Experience Center in Carson, and there is one in Atlanta, which is home to Porsche North America Corporate Offices at One Porsche Drive. The Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta is at the fringes of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the busiest airport in the world. Eighty-percent of the U.S. is within a twohour flight of Atlanta. The PEC Atlanta is of the familiar Porsche style and designed by HOK Architects, the largest US-based architectural firm. They not only did the PEC but the Solis Hotel adjacent to the Center. Solis Hotel is a German brand here in collaboration with Porsche. Makes sense: fly in, order your new car or test drive the track, or have a business conference. Stay overnight and fly out. On my visit, corporate groups from Home Depot and MasterCard were attending. The Atlanta and Los Angeles Centers share many of the same features: restaurant, cafe, driving course, boutique; in Atlanta there is the Heritage Gallery exhibition space of special Porsches. This trip several of Jeff Zwart’s rally and Pikes Peak cars were on display along with the 17th 1949 Porsche Gmund coupe. All perfect in their splendor.

The gallery has artifacts of Ferry Porsche and other Porsche memorabilia. Adding to a trip to Atlanta is the Delta Flight Museum which is nearby, and features many planes, and a 737-200 full-motion flight simulator, that with advance reservations you might be able to “experience.” The Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta is the corporate office and has gated security so advance arrangements need to be made to get on the property. An easy way is a reservation for lunch at Restaurant 356 or check www.porschedriving.com. Lunch at the restaurant is a treat (Although Restaurant 917 in Carson might be a tad better), and you can watch the planes take off, look down can see who is breaking a little too early for the

European Adventure Story by Steve Eguina

28 PANDO | May 2018

Photos by Mark Trewartha

I

t seems if you’re celebrating anniversaries, it’s done with a large family get together in five-year increments. At a “certain age,” BIG birthdays are usually ones ending in zero and so many candles you couldn’t possibly blow them out! For me, last September was a birthday with a BIG zero on the end. However, breaking tradition, there was no family get together. My birthday celebration was just Lisa and I taking a “very nice little trip to Europe.” I mean REALLY nice! This was the trip of a lifetime that we will never forget! I have known Mark and Tina who own Autobahn Adventures as friends and clients for many years. However, in all that time I had not found the time for OUR Autobahn Adventure. But, this one looked perfect and included visiting Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy; driving a new 911 on five different alpine pass roads and a couple more on side trips. Unbelievably! That was only a very small part of the adventure! You couldn’t ask for a more comprehensive, fully thought-out experience. Mark and Tina were the perfect hosts to plan our adventure. All arrangements, absolutely everything was first class! We were provided a new 911 4S to drive for the full two weeks. We stayed at 5-star hotels with some of the most incredible views you only see in movies. Imagine waking up in a boutique hotel to a view of the snowcapped Alps with a stunning, big blue lake a mile below and the sound of the cow bells in the distance. That experience is something I will never forget! At the end of the day we had wonderful meals and excellent wine with all our new friends where we relaxed and exchanged experiences of the day. Our friends and OCR members, Eric and Candice Kaltenbach, were also on the adventure. At the end of the third day having a cocktail, Eric and I decided this shouldn’t be just a once in a life time adventure. I know Eric and Candice have already signed up for another trip. Also, many of our OCR members have attended three or four different trips over the last few years. About twelve other couples from various parts of the USA and Canada were on the adventure and were so much fun! Some of the most interesting and funniest people I have ever met! Arriving in Frankfurt a couple days early, we drove to the Nürburgring to see if a “track prepared” Sirocco could hit a sub 7-minute lap time. Well Porsche’s records are not in danger any time soon! We met all our new friends that night for dinner and the next day we attended the Frankfurt Auto Show. This

was amazing and included about ten very large buildings, some open on the interior for three stories housing just one marque! From Frankfurt during the next two weeks, every day was a new adventure. One of the best features of the trip was, this wasn’t just a driving tour where everyone gets into their cars in the morning and follows each other around Europe. You stay two or three days in each hotel which is usually in the country, and several of these are world famous for their Spa’s. Your luggage is picked up and delivered to your room in the next hotel. There is plenty of time for hiking and other activities. I think every hotel provided regular and electric bikes. Mark and Tina usually had a handout for each destination and what they had planned for the next day or two if you wanted to come along. However, your time was your own and these daytrips were optional.

The 911 navigations systems were preprogrammed for about anywhere you might want to go. On several days, three or four of us would go off and drive the countryside, stop for a nice lunch which was usually on a lake. One day, five of the guys took a drive to the top of a mountain on the Austrian border to visit a motorcycle museum (which was really interesting!) and housed in the original remodeled border crossing facilities. The ladies decided to spend that day relaxing and taking advantage of the hotel spa’s amenities. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves. You really owe it to yourself to take your own Autobahn Adventure. Take a look at the video at Autobahnadventures.com. I particularly like the hotel shown in the video where you drive the car into the lobby to register! Have Fun! Steve Eguina May 2018 | PANDO 29
