Any resemblance to the car of your dreams is purely intentional. It wears its heritage proudly on its sleeves. And fenders. And roofline. Experience the Porsche Macan S. A 340-horsepower twin-turbo V6, PDK double-clutch transmission and active all-wheel drive with Porsche Traction Management for maximum grip in varying driving conditions. All standard. The Macan S is built around our defining belief that every drive should be unforgettable. And every car should be a sports car. Dream fulfillment begins with a test drive. Porsche. There is no substitute.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Barry Michaels
A Good Month to be Lazy? Did you know there is an International Day of Idleness? Probably not, because if you’re like me you were probably too busy to find out. None the less, May 2nd was officially named International Day of Idleness in 1966 at The World Tramps Conference in Argentina. Who knew? That bit of trivia triggered my curiosity as to what else I didn’t know about May. According to Mr. Google, superstition says that you shouldn’t buy a broom, wash a blanket, or get married in May. Good to know for future reference, but I really wasn’t planning on doing any of those things anyway. Factually, no other month ever begins or ends on the same day of the week as does May. Perhaps that tidbit of information will be useful if you ever play Trivial Pursuit. For me, the month of May represented Cinco de Mayo parties, the first long weekend holiday of the year, and the Indy 500. More importantly, it provided the beginning of great weather for topdown driving along Pacific Coast Highway, and that has remained an enduring joy throughout my adult life. What else does May have to offer OCR members? The first Saturday of the month kicks off with our monthly breakfast meeting at Original Mike’s. Opportunities to socialize and eat abound, whether that be early morning Cars & Coffee events or more substantial opportunities for burgers, pizza, pastries or fish. Keep an eye on the events section of our website for details. There are already two area car shows listed there. In addition, the first Sunday will be the Grand Prix Region’s annual Concours at the Lakewood Country Club, which is a good opportunity to dust off your judging skills or view some of the Concours competition that will be at the OCR
Concours in June. Speaking of Concours, please join me in thanking James Buck for hosting a Zone 8 judge’s school at Cape Auto last month, and Cooper Boggs for holding a Concours detailing tech session for our members at Cooper’s Classy Car Care. Thanks also to Ted Hoiberg, and all OCR and Riverside Region volunteers that assisted with our April 28th autocross event, the initial 2019 AX event within the joint OCR/RsR – Porsche Riverside 2019 Championship Series. Our next AX event will be June 30th, with registration being facilitated on motorsportreg.com by the Riverside Region. In addition to region events (all OCR members are welcome to participate in region events sponsored by any PCA region), please remember PCA offers a number of national events. Seven OCR members enjoyed the PCA Treffen - Santa Barbara, April 3rd-7th. The event “sold out” in less than two hours following the opening of on-line registration. The PCA North American Treffen events have become a high-demand events within PCA, and represent a great opportunity to combine the comradery of fellow PCA members with a regional focus on culture, food, and activities. I hope to see more OCR members at the September Treffen in Woodstock, Vermont. Also note, Porsche Parade registration is now open, to be held at the luxurious Waldorf Astoria - Boca Raton Resort and Club. I hope to see you there. .

Harrah’s Casino Driving Tour Story and Photos by Glenn Billings
he Start/Finish line for the “Harrah’s Casino tour was the Shops at Mission Viejo” shopping mall. Early arrivals were greeted with a beautifully clear and sunny February morning despite all the rain this year and devastation it caused. All that was missing was a rainbow. However, a great substitute was our PCA-OCR Porsche club members arriving in a beautiful rainbow of colors including purples, yellows, blues, reds and oranges. John Saroyan from Newport Coast had his striking 2016 Ultra violet GT-3 RS, along with his son Jeff Saroyan, in his new canary yellow Cayman GT-4. Looking good for its age was Paul and Elena Thenard’s 13-year-old 2006 black 4S. The later models have automatic, paddle or thumb shifter and Paul’s manual transmission has garnered over 80,000 miles! Going back even further in time our oldest participating Porsche was an orange 1983, air-cooled 911S driven by Don Bierce of San Clemente. This car has 340,000 miles on it with no large overhauls done to it at all. Getting that kind of mileage out of some older models doesn`t seem that amazing anymore, but it still does. There was still a question mark whether the Ortega highway was passable for our tour, which was Tour Meister Larry Moore’s concern at the Driver’s meeting. Larry announced Ortega was open after he spoke to a Ducati rider who had just come in from his ride. However, Larry’s alternative route was already routed, so he wouldn’t have to take a chance on an iffy situation. Therefore, we’d be going through the Ortega highway coming back from Harrah’s. We had 30 cars lined up for our 10:00 a.m. start, with a quartet of smaller Boxsters mixed in with the bigger beefy parade of GT-3’s, Carrera 4s and Caymans. With so many cars in a string, it was a challenge to remain together. Unfortunately, due to missing signals and traffic lights, the caravan split apart, and the cars that didn`t make the light, had to catch up to reach the San Diego Freeway south. Knowing the first 52 miles were going to be standard freeway and highway driving, some of the party motored off ahead, leaving the Tour Meister with little more than half his brood. Can`t blame them. These cars were meant to test the twisty mountain roads. Upon reaching El Norte Parkway onto Valley Parkway, then Lake Wohlford Road, the back and forth corners began to appear. The fun lasted for about 9 miles until the remaining group hit Valley Center. This is a desert community, although today, coming over the rise into view of Harrah’s casino, the whole valley was green. It was like a picture postcard from the Swiss Alps in summer, stunning!
18 PANDO | May 2019
We made it to Harrah’s ahead of schedule, due to the more direct route down the 405 to the 78 and met up with crowd that sped off earlier. The back roads which took a little longer, allowed our crew extra time for lunch and to gamble. Our 30 car field had been whittled down to 18 when we arrived. Since some of the participants wanted to stay and gamble, we left on our return journey with 9 cars in tow. The people left behind missed out on a wonderful exhilarating drive back. There were three alternative route options. We had to come up with a fourth.
Turning left out of the casino, we headed up a straight run to Highway 76. The traffic was light and once past Pala roads, it started getting curvy again. That’s when it happened, we lost half of our remaining caravan due to a quick signal light. Unfortunately, some missed an exciting drive including an abundance of back and forth corners, requiring your concentration on the two-lane road; but at a glance you could spot a lone buffalo (bison) chewing grass on the left side of the road. Further down this narrow, twisty lane, and if you had good peripheral vision, you could spot a white llama staring at us on the right side of the road. Now, with only 5 of the 30 car field left, the remaining 1200 horsepower in our little group was halted by 2 horsepower, galloping down the middle of the road. A horse and a smaller paint horse got out onto the roadway and we stopped while four ranch hands corralled them off to the side of the road. We merged on to the Old 395, then a left on Pechanga Parkway to Temecula Parkway. The roads were curvy like a wet noodle, and you couldn`t help but notice how green and lush the surroundings were. Unlike the first part of the trip, mostly freeways and highways, we didn`t get on any interstates on the return drive. We stayed on the back roads through Jefferson Street until heading into more civilization as we approached Clinton Keith Road. Then once on Grand Avenue, as far as you could see, was one long straight stretch, paralleling Lake Elsinore to the south. It seemed to go on forever, though we`d be rewarded once we turned left on to Ortega highway. The Ducati rider we spoke to in the beginning was correct about the pavement along the Ortega. A little gravelly, and wet in some spots, but a nice drive up and over the Cleveland National Forest, San Juan Hot Springs and Casper Wilderness Park. Our surviving pack of PCA-OCR members made it back to where we started, a trip of about 131 miles. It was a fine turnout on a glorious day, and, as our Southern California weather normalizes, we’ll be able to enjoy future adventurous tours and rallies!

Sedona Tour
MARCH 2019
Early Sunday March 10th, 22 people in 13 Porsches set out from various locations in California and one in Nevada to descend on an unexpecting Sedona. Numerous 911 models, 2 Panameras, a Cayman GTS, a GT3 Touring and our own BLU KROK (GT4) ran over the California and Arizona deserts and arrived at our hotel in Sedona around 3:00 p.m. Many of the group travelled in convoy meeting up in Indio early in the morning, however Nancy and I decided to take a slightly different route traveling solo, and arrived just 3 minutes ahead of the convoy. We all got together for a few drinks around the hilltop campfire, where we shared our voyaging stories. We split up for dinner, Nancy and I met up with Rich and Connie French for dinner at Mooney’s Irish Pub, right next door to our hotel.

Monday after breakfast at the hotel, we had a brief driver’s meeting before heading south on AZ-179 through the village of Oak Creek, then briefly joined I-17S, exiting near Camp Verde onto AZ-260E, the twisty part of the journey. We saw snow at the side of the road, which was clear, but the cinders put down during the two-week previous snowfall, caused considerable concern over the next few days. Turning north on AZ-87, we stopped briefly at the Long Valley Café, which despite the numerous customers, remained closed. There were facilities for a natural break and the first group photo opportunity. Continuing in a north-easterly direction, we picked up the pace on the dead straight run to Winslow. We stopped at the historic La Posada Hotel for lunch in the Turquoise Room, and afterward took a stroll down Route 66 to the famous corner with its flatbed Ford from the Eagles “Take it Easy.” Returning to the cars, we discovered 3 cracked windshields, so as we headed back west on I-40, we tried to “Take It Easy.” Another stop at Meteor Crater to see the hole in the ground was followed by a more leisurely drive in the increasing rain, then west on I-40 to Flagstaff, then south 89A back to Sedona. Nancy and I had dinner at The Hudson Restaurant, where we were joined by an old friend and his wife who, unknown to us, moved from North Carolina to Sedona some 12 months ago. Dawn on Tuesday morning was a little cold, and the rain continued on and off the whole day. We drove toward the west, out of Sedona on 89A, then turning off to Cottonwood, and up the hill to Jerome. Jerome was once the largest copper production area in the USA with 15,000 people, but became a ghost town when the copper veins became depleted. After filling up with gas, we decided to risk the weather, as it had started raining more heavily again, and drove over the hill from Jerome to Prescott Valley and Prescott. Lunch at Rosa’s Pizzeria in Prescott was an unexpected pleasure, as several members of the PCA-Arizona Mountain Region had commandeered three big tables and stayed to have lunch and conversation with us. It showed the camaraderie of Porsche owners! Most of the group then made a run down to Country Corner, but Aimee Spirlin offered to show some of us some amazing houses built into the rocks. Returning to Sedona, we rejoined the rest of the group back to the hotel. 24 PANDO | May 2019

Our gracious tour leaders taking full advantage of NDO!
The Verde Canyon Railroad. Inside there was a party going on!
Wednesday morning was a leisurely morning. After breakfast, Nancy and I visited an amazing art gallery just a few yards down the road from our hotel, where we had seen some really remarkable wind sculptures. Needless to say, I predict a number of them taking residence in our back yard one day. We drove then to the Tuzigoot National Monument, a hilltop pueblo deserted many years ago, but once the center of a thriving Native American community. We met up with John and Djun LeFlang exploring the pueblo located below Jerome in the Verde Valley. Very close to our next destination, the Verde Canyon Railroad, where we rejoined the whole group for an NDO (Navigator’s Day Off) rail trip up the canyon, exploring the wildlife, and scenic wonder. A marked change from the previous day we were treated to a beautiful day which while cold, was bright and sunny again. Returning to the hotel in convoy, we decided that our group dinner was best served in the hotel lobby. We were treated to a Mexican extravaganza kindly brought in from a favorite restaurant by Aimee and Nancy, and you might have guessed there was a great deal of “social beverages” consumed, to wash down the excellent enchiladas and tacos!

4. Thursday morning, we were all a little hesitant as the weather forecast was for snow overnight and cold temperatures. BLU KROK was covered in frost and indeed it was quite brisk, showing 34 degrees on the thermometer. However, the snow had stayed at the higher elevations and the roads were clear. After a brief breakfast we all made our way homeward, some in convoy and others solo. This was our second Porsche tour with PCA-OCR, and we were as always, impressed by the friendship and good spirits of the group. The weather forecast prior to the tour wasn’t too promising, but it turned out to be relatively benign. We jointly decided that the subtitle of this tour would be “The Broken Windshield Tour.” The final tally was 6 chipped/ cracked windshields, including a very small ding on BLU KROK’s screen, and additionally, almost everyone had tales to tell of the decimation of the butterfly populations of Arizona and California. I almost renamed BLU KROK to YELLOW KROK, but luckily the clear-bra finish allowed a quick wash off to recover the Sapphire Blue color. Many thanks to Chris and Terry Mewes who put together this tour, supplied amazing maps, gave enroute instructions and recommendations for great food. I tried to include photos from the whole group, but as usual there were too many, so there are many more than can be shown in this article but they can be seen at: (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ ri6syfrlwcj1icw/AACpbWr3Oxfn9U3MX3n0cNRba?dl=0)

Be in Boca for Parade 2019! Summer 2019
We’re lucky to be the Host Zone for Parade 2019 – and we’d love to see you there! It will be held at the Boca Raton Resort and Club, a Waldorf-Astoria … and the room rates will be very reasonable for this luxurious resort. In early 2019, we’ll have complete details, and registration for the hotel and for Parade will be open then. So, plan now for your 2019 summer vacation to be at Parade in Boca.In case you’re not familiar, it’s a beautiful part of Florida: on the Atlantic, just north of Fort Lauderdale, with July’s comfortable sea breezes and summer temps in the high 80s. At 2018’s Parade, there were about 900 Porsches and almost 1,800 attendees. It took 40 year-round Volunteers and more than 700 on-site Volunteers to make it happen. For 2019, we’ll need 100s of Volunteers as well, from all over the country, and there will be an official Volunteer Registration process. But if you’re interested in helping on the front end, by providing local expertise and help with planning Tours, Rallies, and all the other events, please let your Region Leadership know now or email zone 12rep@pca.org. Stay tuned for more information, but check out these sites now:

RICE’S
Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice
Two beauties The 917’s introduction to glamor and status in Gulf Blue-Orange.
1970 917LH at Le Mans, nobody came even close I am one of those who thinks the LH (Lang Heck: Long Tail) is the most beautiful combination of power, speed, sounds, and, fabulous great looks.
The Porsche 917 got its ‘golden touch’ in late 1969. The March Panorama issue covering the 50th anniversary of our beloved 917 is a great collector issue. It’s a definite keeper, and among the accolades of the 917’s, the 50th is one of status. Before the 917 and its signature ways of winning, like the double Daytona 24 hours win (1970 &’71) and Le Mans 1970 &’71, and oh, yes, that movie, “Le Mans.” Before any of that, the glamour and status labored over the likes of Ferrari, Maserati, Lola, and our FORD GT40s. They had the glamour, they had the celebrity drivers, and 32 PANDO | May 2019
they had the victories to go along with it. Glory and ‘glitz’ went hand-in-hand. Porsche on the other hand, was the small quiet car company run by determined engineers who just happened to own the company with their name on their buildings. There was good racing but mostly in the small categories, mostly winning on reliability and quality-built road and race cars. Reliable, strong, road and race cars were where Porsche put their money, time, and interests. There was little time for glamorous promoting, and what there was, selectively was used for those private owners
who gladly drove their own Porsches in competition events. However, the 917 was quite something else again. After Porsche demonstrated to themselves they had the power and the speed to win Le Mans, they wisely made a deal with John Wyer Automotive of England and his Gulf team to run their 917’s in the 1970 World Championship of Makes. Glamour
and status would now help pay the racing bills and thus “Gulf-Porsche” became a household name. Many of us ‘Porsche nuts’ thought of it like family. The lady to the left was there at the announcement of the new Gulf-Porsche partnership to help focus the cameras on the Gulf-Porsche 917. It was a new beginning, and an exciting new era. PS If you have not seen the movie, Le Mans you can’t possibly understand any of this. It’s almost a documentary of the change that took place, beginning Le Mans 1970 and all the way to 2019. Fig.3. Bleeder for European Cars with adapter, Amazon $49.45 I needed to add a follow-on on last month’s BRAKES, Bleeder Screws bit. Some time ago it was reported to bleed your brakes from the bottom up, meaning that’s to pump fresh brake fluid into the farthest and lowest brake caliper, and follow on around to all calipers. The idea, I suppose, is that air being lighter than fluid will travel up and to the brake reservoir. It almost sounds good until you do a brake bleed yourself and see the ugly dark remnants of brake heat absorbed, condensed water, and that black-ish stuff form any number of O-rings, seals, and old fluid. Now THINK on this a moment. Do you want to pump that stuff upward through the whole brake fluid system; through all your brake calipers, brake lines, rear brake bias pressure bias valve, both chambers of your master cylinder, and up to the reservoir? I have to tell you, I think this is nuts! In the olden days we (or our irritated girlfriends or more irritated wives) were asked to foot pump our brake pedal so we could flush out the old discolored fluid and get all the air out. NO JOY there! Foot pumping took two people, one on the bleeder screw, and the other in the cab pumping then holding the pedal down hard. The pump person had to listen carefully for the bleed person to call out, “PUMP FIVE TIMES AND HOLD.” The ‘pumper’ had to push the brake pedal FULLY DOWN AND HOLD IT HARD DOWN on the 5th pump. Then the bleeder person cracked open the caliper bleed screw and observed
the old fluid and air to coming out. Then the bleed person must tighten back the bleeder screw, then call out, “RELEASE.” You did this over and over until the fluid was clear and no air bubbles. Yes, it was like that. If the brake pump person missed the “HOLD” and released the pedal too early, that sucked air into the brake caliper and you had to do it ALL over again. NO JOY! Pressure Brake Bleeder System in the professional service shops opened my eyes. This way you pressurized the brake reservoir (at around 12 psi), pinched off the overboard fluid line, then you cracked open the R/R brake caliper (late 4 piston calipers it was R/R - I/B Caliper bleed screw. You pushed on a 2-3 ft. piece of clear plastic hose (hardware store) and then as you opened the bleed screw you could see the old fluid, air, & crud coming out. This way you flushed your brake system thoroughly, on your own. CAUTION! It is easy to run your reservoir out of fluid. If that happens you must repeat the whole process all over again. Air can and will get into some of the weirdest places, I know. Always check the reservoir after doing each caliper, and remember the front calipers are much larger and use a lot more fluid, so be watchful of the reservoir fluid dropping down. Now, you will have the firmest brake pedal you could ever want. The difference was a genuine paradigm changer. I made my own pressure bleeder many years ago but now you can buy an inexpensive hand pump bleeder very reasonably than do it all yourself. Always do it from the TOP DOWN!
leaking? Check rear shocks (dampers) for leaking? I recommend you use the yellow Bilstein “Sport Dampers” in back of a 930 Turbo, as the standard green ones are too soft especially when looking for more performance. Transaxle checked for no leaks. Axle shafts and bearings? NO loose or torn CV rubber boots. If one end (of 4) CV bearing joints is loose, replace BOTH AXLE assemblies. ALWAYS REPLACE BOTH AXLE ASSEMBLIES AT THE SAME TIME. And, if contemplating any driver education or heavy road use, you must check or have your shock/dampers checked for not bottoming out. More importantly, if you ever go to larger, wider, and/or spacedout wheels and tires; you must check that the body does not rub on the tires under extreme acceleration or hard bumps! This is what is called setting the “BUMP STOP.” This is done by varying the different thickness steel “STOP WASHERS” or rubber bumpers in the shock/damper. It’s relatively simple and you can do it yourself, it‘s just dirty and takes time. So be patient! Rear anti-roll bar and bushings secure? And if you’re thinking of performance driving, how about lowering your 930 to the RoW “European ride height?” This is strongly recommended for a good balance of handling on the street, road, and on a track with street tires. Then, whatever you do you need to get an expert alignment done. By the way, I avoid adding any negative camber. That’s for pure race cars. I also discourage metal spherical anti-roll bar bushings, suspension bushings, and spring
930 Turbo Upgrades: After insuring your 930 Turbo is in good health and ready for some upgrades, I again say, check all of your 930 including brake pads, discs, lines and fluid for being in good condition. Also, check the underside of your chassis for condition of your antiroll bar and bushings, ball joints, steering “turbo tie-rods” and its spherical joints for zero play in it? Struts checked for Fig.3. Bleeder for European Cars with May 2019 | PANDO 33 adapter, Amazon $49.45
plate bushings. Save all that for pure racing and racing parts installers. The most important thing to do first and foremost in upgrading your 930 Turbo for your performance needs, requires thinking it all out FIRST. This is most unlikely possible as there is a process in getting to where you really want your 930 to go. All the following will not compromise street or road driving and this has to be done before anything else. So, think and plan before proceeding. The results will be worth it! Take for instance, if you want to end up with say, 8” and 10” by 18” wheels with 285 x 35 series tires spaced out to the edge of your flares, you do the wheels and tires first. Then proceed with any lowering, then set bump stops, and always alignment. Engine upgrades. First and foremost, after a secure evaluation of having a good healthy engine is, “How much power do you want to have and pay for?” Without having to disassemble the engine or even remove it, a good healthy 3.3L turbo engine that’s street driven with a CAT can be greatly improved. Undergoing these changes requires some understanding how your 930 Turbo engine works, and some of the theories of science that are used to engineer your engine. If you want to try adding a 935 dial-a-boost, first, please GO AWAY. Just increasing boost for more power is a major mistake! I actually do change the boost early on, but I do it by removing the waste gate and cutting down the waste gate spring, shorter, to reduce the fixed boost pressure of 0.85 - 0.9 bar, and lower the fixed or base boost setting to around 0.4 bar. I do this in order to reduce boost pressure surges on the street, especially in wet weather or heavy traffic. This makes driving with a cold engine, in traffic, or rain, and be able to use power to drive around traffic without exploding forward on max boost unwittingly. 0.4 Bar of boost will let your 930 Turbo drive like a very predictable, normally aspirated 3.6 Carrera.
Fig.5. “T-piece” #321 611 814 in brake booster hose
I remember a funny story told by the ANDIAL crew when a new 930 Turbo customer asked about installing a dial-a-boost in his Turbo. They said something like: “YA, YA,‘ve do that fur you! Ya, den you bring back for new engine JA!” Dieter said: “You get rid of dat clock and install one of our boost gauges (bar-a: absolute) and learn to use it!” He was absolutely right on this point and I have made the same statement to many enthusiastic 930 Turbo owners. BOOST GAUGE: After the waste gate upgrade, then I install a quality BAR Absolute (bar-a) Pressure gauge. “bar-a” is the measurement of pressure inside the intake manifold. The stock Porsche 930 Turbo’s boost gauge, on the tachometer face, uses a VDO pneumatic/ electrical transmitter that measure boost from the intercooler, NOT INTAKE MANIFOLD PRESSURE. This is a critical measurement and the two indicate different pressures and are never the same. Aircraft and most automotive engineering measure pressure in inches of mercury expressed as “___ Hg.” For the 930 Turbo, and all airplanes, “Hg” would be measured inside the intake manifold. This measurement is also called “M.A.P” (Manifold Absolute Pressure) another way of measuring inches of mercury. Think of it this way, up in space orbit there is no air. No air at all! So, a MAP gauge would measure a true 0 Hg,” and so would a barabsolute gauge. Now back down to earth, at sea level, and our MAP /bar-a gauge will measure “static pressure”
34 PANDO | May 2019 Fig.4. Waste gate springs; 0.5, 1.0, 1.2 Bar
Fig.6. Bar-a gauge
or atmospheric pressure which is determined by ground elevation, temperatures, and the weather. Nominal “static pressure” at sea level is around 30” M.A.P or 1.0 bar-a. So, let’s say you are in the O.C. and you are sitting at rest with your engine off, and your bar-a gauge will show 1.0. Then, with the engine started and running at idle, it will drop below 0 and show a pressure below static pressure, or vacuum. I use a MAP bar gauges that indicates at normal idle around -250 to -300 mmHg. As I drive off and increase power, the vacuum starts to go away and boost pressure starts to indicate. With my engine fully warmed and on a long, open, safe pavement ahead, I can easily open the throttle up and observe boost pressure rising. I can then check to see what my maximum set boost pressure is, then I can dial-in the desired maximum boost pressure and then check it. After all that, if conditions are favorable, I can then run at max boost with W.O.T. and not have to look at the gauge as everything happens much too quickly and it is EYES FRONT! PS. Looking at a boost gauge while on full bo.ost is near impossible and foolish to try anyway. PSS. Those boost-only gauges with the telltale pointer came from team owners who had to check to see if their driver had increased boost pressure against orders, and likely over stressed their engine. So, the tell-tale was frankly for morons who thought dialing up boost would make up for their slow lap times. Some drivers got fired
after a team owner checked a second hidden tell-tale boost gauge that revealed a misdeed! BOOST CONTROLLER: For the record, I’ve used the precision and very expensive 917 and 935 boost controllers, but they take a lot of turns on the wheel to get a pressure change and it’s big and heavy. The plastic ‘paint spray regulators’ I’ve used for 25 years that I prefer are small, and have an easy twist knob and dial-in pressure changes, and it has an easy-to-use locking safety feature. It has also proven to be quite reliable. Now that you are able to use your turbocharged system wisely there are some rules to learn: NEVER start off and go on WOT! (WIDE OPEN THROTTLE). Reason? You may have a sticking waste gate and you could blow up your engine! I’ve seen it happen. I like the way Mark Donohue drove his turbocharged 917 race cars. Mark always started off slowly to feel out the car, the engine, the tires, etc. He always came out of the pits slowly and did his first lap, or two, easing on the power to make sure the waste gates were ‘cracking’ and then fully opening where he wanted them, but only with partial throttle. Then after warm up, he flew!
Fig.8. No words needed
PICTURE, I keep seeing requests for picture, or sorry, “images.” So where are yours??? I saw this on Octane and I just love the look (See magazine images above). 964 & 993 Chain housing covers leaking. I’ve seen this on my own engine and removed both chain housing covers and had most of the studs (“collar bolts”) come out with the plastic lock nut during removal. After cleaning, and checking the covers for flatness, I re-sprayed high temperature silver on the covers as I did earlier on the chain housing to reflect heat. It works! I did see that the “gasket,” which is a one-piece rubber-like seal, was pliable but not as soft as the new “gaskets.” I also removed all Collar Bolts, cleaned them thoroughly and installed them LONG END INTO THE HOUSING, with red LOCTIGHT 270. Then, install new gaskets onto each cover’s channel groove.
Fig.7. Small dial-a-boost With a built up 930 Turbo, you must follow a routine like this if you want to have a long lived powerful 930 Turbo. One last thing, I F this is too much for one to follow, maybe a set waste gate spring is best for you. If you go on to build your engine for more power, you need to carefully have your waste gate adjusted to a setting where you can handle it and feel comfortable all the time. More later.
Fig.9. This one got it 100% right from day one
Then installing new “thrust rings” actually thick rubber seals (9 ea.) on each cover, and install the metal concave “thrust washers” with lock nuts. The lock nuts are torqued to 23 Nm or 4 ft/ lbs. I also add the drag torque of the lock nut to the specification, then torque to that ONLY. There should be a small gap (about 1.5 – 2.0 mm) between the covers and the housings all the way around. It will be one year this June, and so far, NO LEAKS!
