As the majority of Porsches sales continue to swing over to vehicles with more than two passenger doors, I wonder how can a car club reach these buyers? While I am sure an emotional connection exists between these buyers and their cars, would they be categorized as car enthusiasts? For those of you with Cayennes, Panameras, Macans, and all other front engine variants, please do not misinterpret these questions, you are as important as any of the two-door models. At the next OCR event, look around and you will see an overwhelming percentage of the vehicles as two-door models. I can tell you that our goal should be to reach out to all Porsche buyers at every opportunity and get
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE them involved with our organization. Every one of our events (except the one off-road event to Anza which is only for Macans and Cayennes) is designed for all Porsche cars. Take Larry Moore’s tours and rallies for instance, most of these you will be at a significant advantage if you have additional passengers. For me, as I ponder on what a “car enthusiast” means, the following thoughts come to mind: A person who has a soft spot for cars of all types and appreciates their lines, the front, back and personality that the car exudes. A person that has a list of cars to buy, someday, as one of life’s many goals (mine is a GT3 and 1960 Bug-eye Sprite).
Someone that truly understands that a clean car is a happy car, and I might add, a happy driver. A driver, regardless of conditions, simply enjoys time behind the wheel. A person, while our Porsches are equipped with fantastic stereos, chooses to drive with only the beautiful sound of the exhaust. Certainly some, if not all, of the aforementioned thoughts mean something to you. So if that is true, and you have not made the time to participate in one of the many events at PCA OCR (http://pcaocr.com) give it a whirl. If you love your car today, wait until you have had a chance to share your beauty and experiences with other like-minded Porsche car enthusiasts. Looking forward to seeing each of you at an upcoming event!

EDITOR’S NOTES An Artists’ Milieu
In Greg Lush’s President’s Column this month (hail to the chief!), he mentions that Porsche is changing and more Porsches with four doors are being sold than any sporting variety. His question is: how to be an inclusive society as we are changing our environment.

Along the 405, way up high, gleaming towers of steel and glass, glower upon all those below. Within the hallowed corridors the club powers hustle and occasionally bustle, whisper and tussle. Badges with obscure titles mean one mission: make the Orange Coast Region the best in the land!
Hot Oil
It has been a racy month or so for me and the redoubtable Mrs. Maxine T. Cooper. First mid- September we were in Southern England at the marvelous Goodwood Revival, and I will write about this soon. Then later in the month, the weekend we returned in fact, were the Coronado Road Races. Add to the mix a continuing fascination with Formula 1! this season, and Indy Car finishing their own championship. Hot oil, indeed. If you are a fan of this type of thing I might suggest we are in a bit of a “golden age.” I would further suggest the last “golden age” that I personally witnessed was back in the 1970s and late 1960s with CanAm and Formula 5000, and the variety of
Indianapolis. We had quite a choice of daring young people and dedicated teams to back them.
They Will be Remembered
If you’ve been to Rome, no doubt you’ve seen the Colosseum. Imposing as it is, there is nearby the “Circus Maximus”, which was capable of holding more than 100,000 spectators and where the true passion of the age occurred-- chariot racing. The factions wore colored uniforms for identity and the crowds roared. So, now fast forward to the 20th-21st century and we have speed bowls capable of seating 100,000 and the teams are liveried in colorful comparison. Will this be excavated one day as well, and be the future’s interpretation of the passion of our age? Or, maybe they’ll dig up a shopping mall and come to the conclusion that we worshipped at the altar of almighty commerce. I’d vote for the speed bowls, but I won’t be around to cast any ballot.
In the USA 14,000 plus Cayennes, Macans, and Panameras were sold in the first seven months of the year. This compares with about 10,000 911s, Caymans, and Boxsters. Oh, by the way, four very high net-worth individuals purchased 918s. So the mix is definitely towards the four-door side of the family jewels on offer. Although the sporting side will not be ignored, we must realize that the quirky little manufacturer of funky sports cars has been gone since the late 1990s with the introduction of water (gasp!) as a cooling medium. Given the competition in the segments Porsche is offering their automobiles, the people buying a Macan for instance have other, cheaper, choices. But still they buy Porsche. Why? I suggest one reason is the mystique of Porsche, and that is enhanced by the two-door sporty product and racing activity. The other reason may be to show the neighbors that they have enough disposable income left after the mortgage to buy a more expensive car than the mythical “Jones” family. And of course, any Porsche performs well, so there is that aspect. But the fraternity of the Orange Coast Region must be capable of reaching out to and being meaningful to a new segment. This segment is more diverse

PCA/OCR – GIMMICK RALLY: CRUISING DOWN THE O.C. COAST Story and Photos by Larry Moore, Rally Meister What a nice respite, following three weeks of very hot weather, Saturday, September 20 dawned overcast and kind of cool in Orange County as the rally crowd drove into the Outlets of Orange Mall, adjacent to Krispy Kreme. The monthly ‘kick the tires and have a donut’ crowd was there and the car conversations continued as we registered the rally participants. Following the 8:45ish driver’s meeting the Rallistas took time to read the Route Instructions and try to organize themselves to deal with the presented eight photo objects and 24 (counting all parts) questions. By 9:10 most everyone was underway. As advertised, the route instructions were relatively easy (follow Pacific
Coast Hwy. from Seal Beach to the edge of San Clemente, with a couple of detours to either side) and the photos were pretty much straight forward (except maybe the devilish one). As advertised, the questions were a bit more difficult than normal, and the scores proved this out, as the winning score was 27 correct out of 32 possible. This was equivalent to an 84% success rate while the overall average success rate was approximately 59%. Thankfully the clouds persisted as the participants drove down the coast in the coolness afforded by the high overcast. The rally route ended at the Dana West Yacht Club in the heart of the Dana Point Harbor. Adjacent to the yacht club on the channel edge stands the impressive statue of Richard
Henry Dana, namesake of the town, the harbor and author of the classic book, Two Years Before The Mast. The book is a wonderful recounting of his time as a common sailor aboard the merchant ship “Pilgrim” off the coast of California in 1834-36. The book name refers to his accommodations aboard the ship, with the common sailors up in the ship’s bow, or “before the mast.” At the yacht club our sponsor was PCA Member Louise Bent of San Clemente. Our group was greeted by the Club Commodore, Steve White, and we were directed to the sun deck area for libation and lunch. Once all the cars were in, our scorer (my wife Gloria) tallied their efforts and we announced the winners.

The Search is Over! Story and Photos by David Hong The elusive Metallic Peridot Green Cayman R has been located and captured. After approximately 18 months of seeing it appear across the country from Bellevue, WA to San Antonio, TX to somewhere in Virginia, it was spotted in our own backyard in a consignment lot on PCH about two weeks ago. Here’s the story. Mary attended a seminar in Newport Beach on Monday and Tuesday. While returning home northbound on PCH, she spotted the vehicle that she has been obsessing over. I received a text of this and just thought that she had seen one on the road and did not give it a second thought. I continued with my many “honey-do s” until she returned home and clarified where she had seen it. I acknowledged that I was aware that a PDK-optioned car was at that dealership. She was looking for a manual transmission so no alarms were set off when I saw the ad for it there. We decided to check it out “in person” on Friday. The sales consultant offered Mary a test drive first and as I watched them pull out onto PCH, I began to feel pupae morphing into butterflies in my stomach; you know that feeling that accompanies weakening knees.
Upon exiting the car with an ear to ear grin, she handed me the keys for my turn behind the wheel, still skeptical of the PDK. Northbound traffic on a Friday afternoon does not provide for a very exciting test drive, so the sales consultant instructed me to take a right into the neighborhood. I was ordered to ”Hit it!” As my head was thrown back and my mouth stretched to its limit and froze in the same ear to ear grin as Mary, I shifted through Sport and Sport+ modes. I was sold at that point. We returned to the lot and expressed interest in the car but would have to consider the purchase overnight. The following day was committed to moving our son home from Northern California, so we would be on the road from early morning to night, hauling his belongings in a trailer southbound on I-5. I decided to call the sales consultant during a lunch break and received bad news of the car being sold that morning by another consultant. He would get back to us to confirm the sale. Several hours passed as we hit the road for a long drive home. At about 5 pm we got a call confirming the sale but it was an online sale without

any deposit. An agreement was made between the consultants that if we were committed, it would be ours. So, we exited at Mercy Springs Road in Los Banos, pulled between a Shell station and a local Fruit Stand and “bought” a Metallic Peridot Green Cayman R! Mary’s Gem (Peridot) is corralled beside our Guards Red SC in the garage, conjuring up a “Christmassy” image in these hot SoCal days AND will NOT be a Garage Queen. The Pistachio Princess, as she has been affectionately referred to, will be using it as her daily driver. The color of the car is very unique and causes reactions ranging from smiles, stares, and even drooling. Thank goodness for clear bras! The most dynamic reaction I experienced was a 996 cab driver going in the opposite direction, taking his steering wheel with him into his left lane, as he rubbernecked at the car as he passed us. We are looking forward to OCR events in the car and meeting more people who come up to us just curious about it. Congratulations Mary, you deserve it!

Arrowhead Tour Story and Photos by Mike Knudsen This was a the tour for everyone – an easy, but still spectacular drive, a variety of destination attractions to keep everyone entertained (even if your companion doesn’t share your passion), and lots of choices for “add–ons”. More later. The first stop was Walter’s Porsche for breakfast and a drivers meeting lead by tour chief Larry Moore, who handed out printed directions for everyone. To some it might seem easy, but with all the freeway changes out there, and the low probability that we could actually stay together as a group, those directions were mighty handy. Thanks, Larry!
As with many of our tours, the first few miles are freeway, but that only helps us appreciate the rest – in this case the “Rim of the World” highway (SR 18). After exiting the freeway, we took the famous two-lane scenic road to the Village, along which Larry politely suggested “no passing” (he needn’t have worried). It’s always great fun to see Porsches as far in front and back of you as you can see. Although there are numerous viewpoints along the way, we decided at the drivers meeting to go directly to the Village, letting everyone to stop and view at their leisure on their way home. Then, a left turn on SR 173, and we were into the Village. There was a
Porsche corral right in the center of town, and, at least when we got there, it had room for all us. Thank you Arrowhead! Because, as we all know, the safest place to park a Porsche is in your garage or between two other Porsches. The “Timeline” display of cars was awesome, and we met a few other OCR members, like Greg Lush, who’d gone up much earlier to display their cars. In addition, those of you who know Arrowhead know there are boutiques and restaurants, gift shops, and the lake to enjoy. In this case, it was also in the middle of their Oktoberfest celebration, so Oompa bands, beer, and brats were in ample supply. All topped off by

Driving in a Porsche 911 is one of the most enjoyable things in life I that I have experienced...in a car! One of the first things I discovered when I bought my 911 and bid farewell to my Corvette was that I needed to ‘dial in’ my own driving position. I was used to a lowered small block fuel injected Stingray (’63) with stiff shocks, quick steering, and semi-racing drum brakes, with a close ratio 4-speed transmission. My 911 was soft. It sat up high--even back in 1968. The small mounted down-low bumpers were too low for the USA, and all USA delivered 911s had their torsion bars adjusted up about 3-4 inches higher than the European 911s. The early 911 also had small brakes and skinny 155 x 65 series tires. However, they worked surprisingly well.

My driver’s seat was standard with a large flat bottom, slightly curved backrest, and small headrest. And it was soft. It was much too soft and ‘spongy’ for my liking. And by that I mean with my (then) 195 pounds, I
sank down almost to the floor!
the Anti-Roll Bars (ARB) were not too soft; they were fine (By the way: the ARBs are not sway bars; they do not prevent “sway,” they resist leaning in a turn, and thus are Anti-Roll Bars!)
My brother John, thankfully, came home from Vietnam in 1967 in one piece and got himself a Corvette Stingray and we both had a lot of fun with them. But in Monterey, California it was too much car for those small roads and his driving style. So he went through a few interesting cars and then found a 356 4-cam Speedster. John gave me some great advice on how to get used to the world of Porsche and my new 911. This is topic for Ramblings this month: Driver Positioning. John told me number one: “Get rid of that ‘old mans’ seat!” So, we found a Recaro Sport/ Rally Seat for a deal and in it went. The first thing I noticed was everything I thought I had learned so far to be in control and comfortable was totally different and useless. I quickly discovered that what I perceived as soft shocks (Koni) were not soft at all, and

All these new-found impressions came about because I now had excellent communication from the road, in the car through my back, head, neck, shoulders, arms, legs, and my butt! All because of my new seat! I could feel the difference in how my 911 took bumps and turns, braking and acceleration and was immediately able to feel the wind influence while driving at freeway speeds. I was no longer subconsciously bracing myself against the door, seat, and floorboard as I was before. I was firmly belted into my new seat and now could do more driving and not just hanging on! Upgrading my seat was the most significant change I ever made on my 911. After I adjusted my seat to a near perfect position, I realized I liked sitting down low with arms slightly bent and hands on the steering wheel at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions. My early on-track driving schools and time trials showed me how to adjust the car to my sensing in order to feel what my 911 was doing and be able to extract the maximum performance from it. The first thing I noticed needing attention was the 911 steering wheel! It was huge. Like something off a Mack truck!

AutoCross with the Girls of Porsche Story by Pamela Horton Photos by Pamela Horton, Mike Knudson, and Kevin Van Fleet On a sunny Saturday at Original Mike’s Breakfast Club Meeting, Armand Gastello was at the mike saying something like, “Get your garage queen out and come take part in autocross.” What was this? An opportunity to drive my car fast and legally. Count me in! My first autocross was the next month in 2008 and I have been doing it off and on ever since then. Through heat and cold on the old El Toro airfield, I learned to drive my can the way it was intended

by the Porsche engineers. What I also learned are the great benefits of better car handling. Having actually avoided what could have been a very serious accident when I was cut-off by a driver of an SUV on the 73 toll road, I credit to my time on the track. What I learned driving autocross translated to street driving with more confidence and car handling which aided me in avoiding a collision with the other car.
At autocross events I have meet many wonderful, friendly people. It truly is a lot of fun and some of the friendships made will last forever. This is why I decided to dedicate this issue to some of the women who take part in autocross. Diverse and interesting is each lady I interviewed during the June 2014 autocross.

What Some of the Ladies Have to Say About AutoCross Sherry Taylor Sherry Taylor got into doing autocross due to her parents Rod and Patricia Lynn Taylor. She says she loves driving fast in this safe environment. She does autocross with her boyfriend, Craig, and they drive a 2014 911 Carrera 4S.
Christine Newcomer Christine Newcomer bought her Cayman S in October 2007, attended her first event the next month - a PCA/OCR Driver’s Clinic - and has been to every event since. It got to the point that she needed an excuse to attend every event, so she started helping out by becoming the autocross registrar. She is happy each year to see more women taking part in autocross. She enjoys the friendships she has made at the track. She is very modest, so I will tell you she usually wins her open class division and often ranks among the top 10 out of about 120 drivers each month.

Petra McRae Petra McRae has been doing autocross on and off for 5-6 years. She says now she is mostly on. She finds that autocross improves her daily driving and gets her out of her comfort zone. Her husband Ed, who was my first instructor, is general manager for Walter’s Porsche. Walters is the primary sponsor for PCA/OCR autocross and we are all so grateful to them for making these events affordable for so many drivers. So when does Delaney become driving age!

Lorri Trotter started doing autocross in 2006 because of her dad, Bob Scheussler. She says he has always had Porsches and when he retired he found autocross. He would ask the kids if they wanted to go check it out, and when they finally came out, they were hooked! Her whole family takes part: her dad, his wife Lisa, her sister Karen, her brother Kris and his wife Becky. Her husband Morgan can’t wait to get their 2-yearold Eve into a cart. So basically anyone in the family who has a driver’s license is probably driving autocross. Lorri has a very important volunteer position; she and her sister Karen have worked timing for the events since 2007. Becky Scheussler married into this autocross family and has been driving autocross for five years. She loves the speed and the time with the whole family together. Her husband Kris has just started their oldest daughter Samantha driving autocross.

Lisa Taylor says she loves speed and has been doing autocross for six years. Pushing her 2014 Turbo S to the max is what it’s all about out on the track. She usually comes in her Flying L trailer named for her quarter horse ranch. Once a year she’s an event sponsor and then she treats us to lunch from a great taco bar. For Lisa it’s all about “Horses and Porsches.”
Candace Cultraro Candace Cultraro was doing her first autocross when I spoke with her in June. She had watched a few videos on YouTube and decided to join the club and take part when she got her 911. During her first run she spun out but wasn’t too scared and her instructor said she did great. She likes driving fast, so this is a great venue for her. OK this sums it up: To us Girls of Autocross each day at the track is a day spent learning to drive fast legally, improving our street driving skills while having fun with friends and family. No Speed Limit... No tickets! Story and Photos by Norm Follis What if you own a Porsche, you had 90 miles of deserted Nevada highway before you and you could drive legally really fast without getting a speeding ticket or even the fear of getting one? I had heard of the Silver State Classic Challenge for several years. It is a road race held twice a year in May and in September that is based in Ely, NV where my wife, Carolyn, was raised. Knowing I enjoy driving fast, Carolyn’s family had always encouraged me to participate in the event. On the day of the race the 90-mile stretch of highway outside of Ely between Lund and Hiko is closed to all non-race traffic between 5 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Fellow OCR members Keith Clark, Jim Dawson joined me to drive in this year’s race which was held on Sunday, September 21. Both Keith, driving a Carrera S, and Jim, driving a 928 S4, had participated in the event several times before. This was Keith’s 9th time, finishing first twice driving solo in the 110 mph group. He was a tremendous help, encouraging me and sharing driving and timing tips that would help me in the race. Since this was my first time to drive in the event, I had to go through rookie qualification which meant that I was required to attend the Qualifying
School at the Las Vegas Motor Raceway on Thursday before the Sunday raceday. The rookies met at the track at 6 a.m.and, after making sure we had proper safety equipment, i.e. fire extinguisher, gloves and helmet, our cars were checked for loose items, proper tire inflation, tread wear, etc. We then had a driver’s meeting where we met our instructors who would be riding with us around the track course to ensure that we were able to safely handle our cars on the race course. I did three laps around the track with my instructor Dave who was “very generous” in giving me helpful suggestions as to how I might better

Hearts & Garages Tour Story by Peggy Huddleston, Photos by Gary Labb Our “Hearts and Garages” tour marked its 14th year with some unusual 100-degree weather and all of the usual fun. This year, we visited the garages of Greg and Annie Lush, Brian and Rhonda Burnevik, Tom and Debbie Drummond, and Paul and Marybeth Formby. The first stop was for appetizers at Greg and Annie Lush’s garage/house in Dove Canyon. As sixty-six cars made their way to Greg and Annie’s garage, they were greeted by Jim Reinholdt and Bruce Peasland, who did wonderful service by making sure that everyone had a gate pass. Gail Reinholdt and Lorraine Peasland helped by making sure that all arrivals were checked in and registered. Dove Canyon is a beautiful golf neighborhood set in winding roads. At the end of a long driveway we found
Greg Lush with a garage full of two Porsches and his favorite Mini, owned since he was a teenager. Greg quickly directed all to a wonderful array of appetizers made and prepared by Annie, and a welcome cool drink. We wonder if Annie would mind sharing her recipes for the hot cheesy dip and stuffed bell pepper bits that were so good? Along with sharing his love of Porsches, racing, and his Mini, Greg also shared his love of photography and his collection of antique cameras. With the help of Chris and Jan Brooksby who passed out the address and maps to our next stop it was a race to get to the “salad stop” and the collection of cars that belong to Brian and Rhonda Burnevik in Laguna Hills. Brian and Rhonda own fourteen
vehicles, all in red and each one with its’ own history. Among these is an early model MGC-GT that is similar to the first car that Rhonda owned. Of the fourteen cars, four are Porsches. To enhance the setting, Rhonda has done a wonderful job in decorating their “clubhouse” walls with retro historic signs and car memorabilia. It was hard to pull away from the collection to partake of the cool summer salad and refreshing drinks serviced by several “car crazy” young men from the Burnevik’s church. The men proudly wore red shirts emblazoned with, “Club house, where seeing red is a good thing”. Our next stop was a true working garage. This is a business location and Tom Drummond calls it, “Wholesale California” in Costa Mesa. As we parked in front of an older house

I was finally able and willing to get up at an early hour and make the drive to our wonderful Saturday morning Breakfast club at Original Mikes in Santa Ana. A perfect day to do so,even if a trifle hot. We shared the parking lot with a really interesting bunch of local hot rods so it was an eclectic mix of automobiles to enjoy. In addition to seeing friends, old and new, once again. I fully expect EVERY club member to

From my Rallymeister view point, the success of Mark and his nephew, Sean, was not a surprise because they have been consistently competitive recently. However, the second place team lead by Wayne Colony was a total surprise because we haven’t seen Wayne for a long, long time and we had not met Pete before (I think he was a ringer). Welcome back Wayne, nice to see you; and on the podium no less. Cool!

Steering Wheels
Back in the early 1970s, we had few choices to choose besides the standard ones. The 914 stock wheel was smaller and some 911 drivers used those. Then the racing Prototipo from the 917 was great--but for me, it blocked my vision of the instruments! I tried a Racemark and some other American auto-partsstore wheels. Unfortunately none of those worked for my driving. Then I found a small ad in Road &Track for a “OBA leather wheel with adapter” for a whopping $14.95. OBA turned out to be a fabulous wheel for me in every regard. This wheel had a much thicker diameter wheel rim so I could fully grasp it with my hands. It was three-spoke and had a slight dish that gave me perfect seating position in relationship to the shifter, and pedals. After 18 years, its leather was worn off, but I liked it so much I had it recovered by Jon Mach in 1993. He is the best in the business…. Today I have an old “Fittipaldi E” wheel sold at one time by the thousands, but it is perfect for my needs today. Oh, and for the OBA: my brother put the OBA on his 356 with a 2.7RS engine, 915 trans & brakes. This is a No.Cal. rocket! With a good wheel and seat, a Porsche driver can dial-in a near perfect seating

Shifters position. This is possible because a 911 has a shifter and pedals that can be easily adjusted with hand tools. Being 6’1” tall did not make my seat fit easy, and I wanted my seat to be low enough to have my eyes just above level with the top of the left front fender line.
The Shifter
The 901, 911, 930, and RUF 930-5spd. transaxles can be easily adjusted. The 1972-‘83 type 915 transaxle shifter has a limited adjustment as the 5th gear spring back safety lock-out, limits shifter adjustments. The G-50 also has some adjustability.
The 901-911 915 930 can benefit from short throw shifters. But I find the first thing to do is replace all the shifter bushing with the hard black rubber zero-play shifter bushings. I have used almost all of the various short shifter kits. I prefer the stock Porsche 911SC/ RS shifter kit. This works on all 915 and 930 just fine and it is stock. Next, is the adjustment of the shifter so you can easily engage all gears and reverse. These adjustments take a little time to master but are rewarding for you to have your own 911 ‘dialed-in” –your way. With driver seat/steering wheel/ shifter all in good location the next thing to check are the pedals.

NO SPEED LIMIT CONTINUED FROM PAGE 22 drive the course, for which I was most appreciative. My experiences driving in autocross events at El Toro and in DE events were a tremendous help navigating the course. After graduating from rookie school, we drove back to the hotel where we had lunch and registered for the race. After lunch we met in the hotel parking lot and caravaned to Ash Springs, about half way to Ely, for a course orientation presented for first time participants. After topping off our gas tanks, we were off to Ely where most participants in the race stayed. A cocktail party was held that evening at one of the local hotels. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet other drivers and share our excitement about upcoming events. Friday morning we awoke to beautiful clear skies; however the weather forecast for the day of the race did not look promising with an 80% chance of rain showers. Thankfully the forecast
improved somewhat later in the day. A tech station was set up in one of the local parks and I was pleased to go through a very thorough inspection with no problems. A Parade of Cars through downtown Ely was scheduled for later that day. I discovered a local tradition that as the cars drove the parade route, we were expected to toss candy to the local children as we drove past; so off to the local store to buy bags of candy. We met at the local High School parking lot at 4:30 p.m. to stage for the Parade. Off we went. There were 130 plus cars led by a police escort driving slowly down Main Street, much to the delight of the kids along the sidewalks waving for more candy. Many of the cars that had extra seats carried local children that helped to pass out the candy. Keith had two of the children in his car. Between tossing the candy out the window they kept asking him to blow his car horn. He blew the horn so often that one sound in the horn failed and he said the other horn then sounded like the “Little Nash Rambler” from the
old song in the 60s. After the Parade, all drivers were invited to a Welcome Reception and enjoyed another great meal. Saturday morning we awoke once again to clear skies, however the forecast for race day still indicated a 50% chance of rain showers. At 9 a.m. we met at a local Park for a “Chuck Wagon Breakfast” hosted by the Lion’s Club, and a Car Show where all the cars were on display for local families to come and enjoy seeing the different race cars and meet and talk with the drivers. That evening I was invited to join Keith and other members of “Team Invader” for dinner at a local Mexican restaurant. Team Invader was made up of drivers of exotic cars including Porsche, Lamborghini and Jaguar that had been winners in past events of Team competition. New members were welcomed and plans were made to continue to press the Corvette Teams for top Team honors.

NO SPEED LIMIT CONTINUED Race day arrived with intermittent rain showers. We left Ely at 6 a.m. with a police escort and drove to a truck stop outside of Lund for staging and final preparations. Cars were divided into six classes based on their target speeds. Being a rookie, I was required to drive in the Touring Class and chose 110 mph as my target speed. The rules were I had to try and average 110 mph over the 90 miles, not going faster that 124 mph or less than 80 mph anywhere on the course. As I was staged at the starting line, I did my best to control my heart rate. Keith was staged to my left and would be leaving one minute before me. He was a picture of concentration as he mentally reviewed his checklist. Finally the flag man pointed to me, and I was next up. The flag dropped and off I went. Keith had prepared a spreadsheet for me to follow with times that I should be at various mile markers. As I passed the markers I used a stopwatch
to indicate whether I was going too fast or too slow. Even though I have driven my Porsche much faster than 110 mph, I had never driven it at those speeds for extended periods. After the first few miles most of the jitters went away and I was able to settle down and pay attention to what Keith had taught me about timing the mile markers. Even though the race began with clear skies at about the 50-mile marker the skies opened with a microburst of rain so heavy I could barely see the front of the car. Obviously I had to slow to a lower speed for safety reasons. Fortunately the downpour lasted only a few minutes, but I knew that I had lost valuable time. From that point on I pushed the upper limit of my Tech speed of 124 mph all the way to the finish line to try and make up for the lost time. As I crossed the finish line and checked my stop watch I knew immediately that I was 58 seconds over the target time of 49.05.5 minutes for
the 90 miles. Sadly I was never able to make up the lost time caused by the downpour and stay under the 124 mph speed limit. In conclusion, the race was an incredible experience; one that I highly recommend to everyone that thinks they might enjoy the thrill of open road racing. Not only was the race itself a “Bucket List” check-off, but also the opportunity to meet so many wonderful participants, each sharing their ideas and suggestions on how to run the race. I plan to drive the next event called the Nevada Open Road Challenge held in Elyon May 15-18, 2015. Hopefully we can get enough interest within the ranks of OCR members to form an unofficial “Team Porsche” and give those Vettes and Ford GTs some real competition. HEARTS & GARAGES TOUR CONTINUED FROM PAGE 26 constructed in the fifties or earlier, we did not realize what was waiting for us. In the backyard was a large collection of 356s and other older Porsche models in many phases of restoration. Tom learned at an early age while working alongside his dad to love and enjoy restoring cars, particularly Porsches. Now with years of experience, knowledge, and passion, Tom turns barn disasters and rust buckets into award winning beautiful Porsches worth dreaming about. My favorite car ever is a 356 roadster, so you know I was in heaven seeing Tom’s talent at work. Tom and his wife Debbie, assisted by their daughter, graciously presented us with a Mexican meal that included Debbie’s homemade refreshing iced tea. We were happy to be that much closer to the coast as we settled in listen to Kerry-Ann Ellington, the Community
Events Manager from Semper Fi Fund. Lance Corporal Kionte Storey also shared his military story and with that his affiliation as a recipient of Semper Fi funding. After Kerry-Ann and Lance Corporal Storey spoke we shared our contribution check for $7,000. I am proud that we made such great support available to the many injured service members in our county. I would like to extend my thanks to all who contributed including many who wrote an additional check straight to the fund. All sixty-six cars made a long and colorful Porsche caterpillar up the 55 Freeway to our final garage tour at the beautiful house of Paul and Marybeth Formby in Orange Park Acres. I think we all felt as if we had just entered a tropical paradise, complete with cool drinks and yummy desserts. The

Formbys shared with us the history of their uniquely painted garage as we made ourselves lemon or mint flavored s’mores. We also watched Lance Corporal Storey’s service dog Koja get to know the Formby’s 3 large dogs for a surprise canine play date. As the moon rose over the lovely lit trees and pool it came time to call it a day. And what a wonderful day it was. We thanked our four gracious host families and all else who helped to create such a winning atmosphere for our homes and the Semper Fi Charity. Remember, if you have been wanting to fix up that old garage and would love to share your home and car bin with about 120 Porsche Club members, as well as aid a very worthy group of people who have sacrificed for our country, please consider being a stop at next years “Hearts and Garages” tour!
