Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington

Never Stop Driving A better life behind the wheel

Edited by Larry Webster, published, July 23 2019 by Motorbooks, Beverly, MA Do not be put off by the cover – there are three pictures of Porsches in the first fifteen pages. This book is not about driving per se, but is rather a paean to owning and loving automobiles. It is a collection of anecdotes, from four different authors, about buying, owning, wrenching on (working on cars, DIY Mechanics; using various wrenches to perform various tasks,) even the psychology of, as well as driving or taking trips in, automobiles. Racing is barely mentioned. If the car is an ‘endangered species,’ this book provides a rationale for why it must be rescued from extinction. The foreword refers to a car as a “fourwheeled escape pod” providing hands-on analog pursuits as a respite from the over stressed, overworked and under-slept modern world of 24-hour news cycles and digital workplaces. Throughout this book, cars are discussed as virtual beings, with character; something to be involved with., the opposite of the current trend toward self-driving-cars, and PDK only Porsches. It describes a fading world, an antidote perhaps to a future where the driver, formerly participating actively in the travel, has become a dumb lump, just riding along. Never Stop Driving is composed of a number of very readable, personal stories of car ownership told in a direct, personal, captivating fashion. These stories of past, automotive related events, are presented in large type, helpful to “mature eyes.” The series-of-anecdotes structure makes this a good book to read in snatches with no requirement for keeping track of characters or continuity. There are many interesting

color pictures of cars in action (everyday actions, not racing,) but the pictures do not relate directly to the adjacent text. The stories are collected in four chapters starting with “The Commitment” dealing with finding and buying a car. “Peace in the Wrenches” deals with the Zen of working on and socializing about cars. “The Joy of Driving” is more about the trips than the actual steering of the car, but the satisfaction that can be obtained by clipping the perfect apex is not ignored. The last chapter consists of four sections dealing with cars as art objects or personal expressions and ending with some personal thoughts of prominent people, from Jay Leno to Peter Egan to Bob Lutz, about the ‘last drive’ they would like to take before they, let us say, had to stop driving. These commenters also discuss the car they would most like to take on their ‘last drive.’ They provide interesting descriptions that really stimulated ‘bucket list’ thoughts in this reviewer. There are four special articles inserted in (and somewhat disruptive to the flow

of,) the narration. These recount personal experiences for four additional car enthusiasts, buying/selling, trouble shooting and wrenching on cars, and, by Sam Posey, driving a race car. All in all, this book is a collection of true stories that any Porschephile can enjoy and relate to because they involve having an automobile as an integral part of one’s life. Soon, a book like this may become ‘a classic of a bye-gone era’ as autonomous vehicles and computer controlled engines/ transmissions eliminate, or at least minimize, the do-it-yourself aspects of both driving and maintaining/repairing automobiles. It is non-technical, not specifically Porsche, but great entertainment for any automobile enthusiast. Never Stop Driving is hardcover, with 192, 7 x 9 inch pages, printed on heavy weight matt paper, with numerous pictures, some full page. It should be available for $28.00 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it), or from motorbooks.com November 2019 | PANDO 7

Treffen (meaning “gathering”) was scheduled to coincide between the end of the Labor Day weekend and before

the arrival of the “leaf peepers.” 250 Porsche aficionados arrived in Porsches and a variety of other cars. Our host hotel was the outstanding Woodstock Inn & Resort, where our group took 140 rooms.

Ok, I failed to mention that

this event sold out in 8 minutes after the Treffen website opened. Whew! Porsches are fast and so are their owners on the computer! Three couples from our OCR Region were fortunate enough to get a reservation and all three couples arrived in VT from different directions without their signature Porsches.

Barry and Denise Michaels flew to Chicago and picked up a rental, Steve and Michelle Fairbanks had planned to drive their 1988 Porsche; however unfortunately, it was stolen from their driveway a few weeks earlier. So, it was “Plan B” for them, flying into Burlington, VT and picking up a rental. Pete and Judy Lech left driving their larger car for the extended cross-country trip that had started in August. We all arrived by Tuesday, one day before the start of the event. Woodstock, Vermont is known for its picturesque natural scenery beauty, the famous Green Mountains, excellent farm-to-table restaurants, hiking trails and eclectic shopping all filled with pure New England Village charm. Our adventures in beautiful Vermont were enriched by several tours led by the volunteers of PCA and Zone 1 Porsche Clubs, and the variety offered didn’t disappoint. Tours all started from the Suicide Six Ski Resort. Their claim to historical fame is as the earliest ski resort in the USA. At the appointed day and time (early am) we headed over. Yes, we were part of the interlopers amongst lines of beautiful German machinery but still warmly welcomed.

16 PANDO | November 2019

The Tours and Activities included driving to Green Mountain Small Town, Historic Covered Bridges, Hildene (Robert Todd Lincoln’s mansion) and Lincoln family summer home, Billings Farm & Museum, Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller Mansion and Gardens National Historic Park, Colonial Era Fort Ticonderoga, Scenic Countryside Tour to the 1799 Historic Dorset Inn, Shelburne Museum in Burlington, and sports of falconry and fly fishing; many hiking trails and of course shopping. Porsches, all shined up and beautifully placed; were displayed one afternoon on the Village Green in the heart of the town. This of course drew a large admiring crowd of locals and tourists. Themed evenings and menus included the Welcome Dinner of hors d’oeuvres and delectable offerings, Flavors of Fall buffet, Woodstock Inn Farm to Table Social and Last Night closing dinner, which was a seafood lover’s feast of lobster, shrimp, mussels and other complementary foods. Steak and grilled chicken were also menu choices. A big thank you to PCA and Zone 1 volunteers which includes the following participating Regions: Green Mountain, Connecticut Valley, Hudson-Champlain and Northeast for making this a spectacular event. Also, thanks to the many sponsors. We all enjoyed renewing friendships and making new ones. “It’s the cars which bring us together but it’s the people who keep us together.” See you on the road!

wonderful evening for Circle Porsche’s presentation of the

Michelle Larsson our hostess and Circle Porsche Brand Ambassador.

New 2020 911.

Over 300 invited guests were treated to a creative setting in the Thunder photo studio, located in Long Beach. The evening was complimented by several open bars for liquid enjoyment and many servers provided the guests with an endless supply and assortment of appetizers. Michelle Larsson, our host and Circle Porsche’s Sales Ambassador, pointed out that the event displayed past 911 models from the first series 1964 so these vintage Porsches could lead up to the unveiling of the four new 2020 models. The 2020 911s were presented under huge photo light-boxes on the seamless stage as a climax to a wonderful social evening. Guests had the opportunity to sit in and ogle over these beautiful Porsches which have the same basic appearance, but they feature refined contours, attachments and the new 911 is a bigger car. I am told that although the look is the same, the cars are all significantly bigger. And the interiors are much more refined and plush than in previous versions of the 911. It was a wonderful presentation and entertaining evening for the appreciative crowd of Porsche friends.

Sam Berro’s Third Annual Story by Vanessa Flores Photos by Sam Berro, Deb Michi, James Falk and Jim Ghahremani

Paso Robles Tour 24 PANDO | November 2019

U pon learning of Sam Berro’s post in the August issue of

Pando, I quickly mailed my deposit, knowing I’d have no problem finding a co-pilot given the ideal itinerary with its mix of beautiful coastal scenery, iconic Hearst Castle and the ever-expanding wine region of Paso Robles. My sister, Valerie, agreed to be my co-pilot, not entirely sure what she was signing up for, though it brought back fond memories of the Triumph GT6 she owned in her 20’s. Within weeks of completing my long-desired purchase of a 991.1, I signed up for a driver’s clinic, followed by my first AutoX. Sam’s Paso Robles trip, with the opportunity to drive remote back roads with other Porsche enthusiasts, would nicely round out these first few months of P-car ownership. Most of our group of 20 drivers and co-pilots gathered in Huntington Beach for introductions, drivers’ meeting and storytelling of prior trips before caravanning north on the 405. It was here I learned this PCA-OCR Paso Robles tour has a history of 20 or so years with Sam carrying on the tradition for the past three years. Way to go, Sam! Others joined us in Solvang; Norm and Linda Hollinger being the closest to our Paso Robles destination in adjacent Templeton, and Ed and Laura Dykstra arriving from Las Vegas, the furthest away. The usual wall of traffic found us in low gears through WLA, which only created greater incentive to find one another and regroup as we approached the Ventura County line. Things got much more interesting and spirited as we took Hwy 154 past Cachuma Lake and cut over to Solvang for our Fresco Valley Café lunch stop that Sam pre-arranged for better conversation among the group. Meals were both fresh and tasty, after which we had time to stroll around and the opportunity to pick up some treats. Departing from Solvang to Paso Robles allowed for a long stretch of road, driving through Los Olivos and down Foxen Canyon passing many wineries from the movie

“Sideways.” We then turned onto Tepusquet Road, up and over the hill on a beautiful narrow tree-lined road which dropped us off at Hwy 166. After a brief stint on Hwy 101, we cut off at Santa Margarita, driving great back roads with lots of great twists and banked turns, including one of the best-known Porsche roads in the state, Hwy 229. Approaching Paso Robles found us searching for our first winery. Most of us landed at Eberle, a short distance from our hotel, for that well-earned first tasting of the trip and the opportunity to stretch, reconnect with each other and enjoy the perfect weather amongst the striking rows of lush green vineyards plump with grapes. After checking into our La Quinta Hotel, many of us took Chris Mewes’ suggestion and gathered nearby at Nino’s, where his brother-in-law, James Sweetwater, strummed guitar, shared his multitude of stories and sang many classic tunes. The consensus was the music, food and drinks were all pretty darned good and an ideal way to close out the day. After Saturday breakfast and drivers’ meeting, Sam led us on a drive through Peachy Canyon to Pasolivo for truly tasty olive oils, balsamic vinegars, specialty salts and herb blends, which

November 2019 | PANDO 25 November 2019 | 25 PANDO

many of us purchased. A wine tasting was long overdue, so off to Opolo known for its award-winning reds, enjoyed in either the beautiful tasting room or outdoors under the casual covered patio. As a driver, it was difficult not being able to enjoy all the tastings, but this is where our co-pilots stepped up to offer their assistance!! This next drive was most memorable with its fine mix of scenic forest canopies, rural farmland, hillside vineyards and a road offering some of the best conditions; a smooth asphalt surface curving through plenty of twists, bends and hairpin turns, including a decent long stretch along a curved bridge. I recall looking at the line of beautiful cars all equally spaced and thinking a drone with a video camera would have captured some great footage of us along that curved bridge. Kelly Tribolet’s birch green GT3 and Lisa Taylor’s amethyst Turbo S added the Skittle and jewel tones pop of colors, boosting the visual factor and complementing the sweet sound of Boxster engines as we rolled into each town turning plenty of heads and receiving friendly waves and ‘thumbs up’ gestures. We each had our own stories to tell from the other memorable parts of that road, which included a few cyclists, a UPS truck, and a gaggle of wild turkeys that fortunately none of us brought home in our grills for early Thanksgiving. Sam arranged a most delicious BBQ tri-tip and chicken lunch at Croad Winery with another opportunity to taste wine and 26 PANDO | November 2019

enjoy a relaxing meal overlooking the vineyards. Later, at Hearst Castle, Tom, our knowledgeable, animated, yet sadly misguided tour guide (he’s an admitted MBZ guy) led us throughout many castle highlights. Weather was again perfect on Saturday with clear visibility for miles out to sea from the castle. Interesting trivia shared by Jim Ghahremani that his grandfather helped build the magnificent Hearst Castle as a concrete contractor. On the drive back via Hwy 46, a few of us stopped by the recommended Dark Star winery, barnlike open air, fun and very casual vibe with music for the last tasting of the day. Great Cabernet Franc here and partially owned by a fellow from Costa Mesa. For dinner, we gathered at McClintock’s, enjoyed another good meal, stories and laughter; wrapping up the weekend before breakfast, goodbyes and departure Sunday morning. Overall, the tour was a balanced mix of driving memorable back roads and social time in beautiful Central California, making for a perfect long weekend getaway for Porsche enthusiasts. As Tom, our Hearst Castle guide stated,” if everyone is smiling at the end of his tour, he’s done his job well.” Thanks to our hosts, Sam and Deb, all the drivers and their equally enthusiastic and engaging, co-pilot spouses and partners. The smiles just keep on coming with this special car and the great company it attracts.

The 912E Saga Continues…

a near calamity, then, a surprise Homecoming.

Story and Photos by Jim Marshall A near miss. 912E #874 came very close to

being totally destroyed in May of this year. Paul Bates stored the car each winter in an Etna, PA warehouse (outside Pittsburgh.) In May, a massive 6-alarm fire engulfed the warehouse. Two hundred collector cars worth millions of dollars were destroyed. As luck would have it, Paul had removed the car from storage just days before the conflagration to attend the 912 Rendezvous in Roanoke, VA.

The Homecoming. The original owners have

now been reunited with “their“ car! Steve and Ann Kompir were the first owners and now, the 14th owners of 912E #874. Reacquisition of a long lost Porsche, is a familiar theme among long time PCA members. The Kompirs originally purchased the car in 1976 from Hagestad Porsche in Colorado. They relocated to Orange County later, where they eventually sold it. The car now resides in Oregon with the Kompir family.

RICE’S

Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice

As

I pound the keys and tabs on my new computer, now with Windows 10 in a learning curve, it is August 22nd. I’m supposed to be into fall, November that is! It all gets to be a bit weird to think out what’s going on so far ahead.

I like to read car magazines or “motor rags.” Well, it seems some other ‘Porsche interest’ magazines aren’t what they once were. Thankfully, Panorama is much better at everything.

That is just my opinion and you are welcome to add your favorites as well. We love commentary. And another shock, I got my renewal for Road & Track magazine, which was always a favorite - even if they once weren’t so favorable to Porsche. Now I read they are going to a 100% digital online format. I hope this is not true, because for one thing reading on a bright ‘electro screen’ is not my idea of enjoying a good motor magazine, and I’ve loved Road & Track and their classy way of showing all the new exotic sports cars. Most cars we can’t afford, but we do learn all is not so wonderful since those writers got to ring them out and I found when it came anywhere near a Porsche in comparison it seemed humorous how they state the 32 PANDO | November 2019

Porsche guys got it right from the start, Loved that! However, most people drive grown up Tonka Trucks, ‘ya know the kiddie toys, you bash together and they never break. Car magazines have gone more to SUVs and trucks, and the result is a once great magazine is now a bang-o grownup rag. I imagine those of us in the Porsche world, for a long time, like our Panorama and PANDO. Too bad the in-house Porsche magazine, Christophorus has moved more into trendy expensive cars, road trips, and wearables these days. It once was more of

an insider look into what was going on in the factory and a guide for practical Porsche life including new innovations from Porsche’s latest developments in new 911s, what else, back then? “Christo,” was all about wise motoring as well. I vividly recall an editorial stating that it is most unwise for Porsche drivers, even those 911 S types, to brag of passing a Ferrari at an unattainable speed for a 911S. The 911S simply didn’t have the energy or gear ratios to do it. We were admonished to respect the cars that were faster and give them an

Jim removed the engine and took most of the old nasty parts off for refinishing.

“OK” to pass. That was most humbling and yet respectful as we who learned how to use a 911, we knew where even the faster Italian cars eased over to let us go by. So, I can honestly say our PANORAMA is more EXCELLENT than the namesake rag! And our PANDO, is a darn good magazine with really great contributions from our membership! “I’m amazed,” to quote Huell Howser. Keep it up folks!

Continuing on the “THE ZERO TIME OVERHAUL, REBUILD, and Up Grade of Jim Poste’s 1977 930 Turbo,” whew! I’m outta breath. We left off somewhere on the history of that old 1977 Turbo and its troublesome past, fixing up things, and Up Grades. James Poste (OCR) deemed his ‘77 turbo fit for a Zero Time Overhaul with a number of upgrades for long term reliability and performance. I could ramble on about the details on this work but it gets too boring for too many newbie Porsche owners, so I’ll try to make it more interesting as the Editor of PANDO wants pictures. Well, I’m going to try to replace a lot of dialog with pictures. Jim removed the engine, transaxle, interior, glass, bumpers, tail electrical panels, and as he was upgrading the body to make it lighter and refurbishing the interior, he was re-painting the 930 as well.
