President’s Message By Greg Lush Our digitally connected OCR community have likely heard by now that Gordon Williams, our elected 20122013 President has resigned, effective August 2013. Having served as the clubs Vice President, I have happily taken on the role of President pro tem. Everyone has been so supportive and welcoming to this new role, thank you very much. My intentions for the rest of the year, and into the next elected period if you will have me, is to focus on awareness, inclusivity and visibility. This concept, or as some have characterized “rallying cry”, was reviewed with the board and unanimously agreed upon. The first signs of the boards’ efforts around awareness, inclusivity and visibility may be evidenced by the PCA
OCR digital board book. If you have a computing device and the internet you are in good shape, simply click or type the link provided and you are in! (http:// sdrv.ms/15OYUGF ). Once inside of the digital board book you will see past and future agendas for board meetings, financials for events (one time), the club overall and re-occurring programs such as AutoX and the Pando. We are also trying to get additional people to attend the board meeting, the more the merrier. If you would like to have an item added to the agenda please feel free to forward to ocrboard@outlook.com. President Obama has really ruined the ability for anyone living behind the Orange County “red curtain” to use the word change; however, you have our word as your highly functional

board that you have spoken and we have listened. Its probably not much of a stretch for most of you to also be described as a car enthusiast. Our community of like-minded individuals is the perfect end to a work week. Whether heading out to a meeting, breakfast club, rally or tour, tech session, AutoX or DE, where else can you go to have this much fun? When I really think about it, I am only bummed out that we don’t have a higher percentage of our membership active at more events. It is our plan to re-invigorate our existing members and recruit additional members. Everyone deserves to share in our collective happiness! Until next time… Greg People. Porsches. Passion.

Garey and Mayor Pro Tem Lisa Bartlet
October skies are clear and bright, but frost can come with the morning light. Pumpkin patches and fireplace nights. As little goblins ring our door bells for delights.
This just in As I write this, I am more or less just back from the 43rd annual “White Gloves” Concours held at Lantern Bay in Dana Point. Not that there was MUCH doubt but the weather was wonderful and Mr. Norm Follis did a masterful job of bringing some joy to the OCR members on the day. Of course, no job such as this is done without assistance and Norm did have assistance from many volunteers including the beautiful Mrs. Follis, Carolyn. I am writing about the day elsewhere so we will try to get in the mention of everyone, a nearly impossible task so forgive us if we miss a name or two. A special mention should be made of Paul Wilkinson, a real life Traffic Engineer... or something like that. What is it Paul? In any case, this gentleman knows his tarmac or lack thereof on which to stage a Concours and had us pre-reconnoitered with parking layouts and little clumps of that white stuff to mark the parking divisions. Nice job sir!

Epic Drives Redux It is odd that for a retirement year I have driven as many, if not more, miles or have been a passenger in as many, if not more, miles than as if I were still covering work miles. I have just completed a drive to (and luckily from) Flagstaff, Arizona. This is, according to Mapquest, 498 and a few tenths miles in one direction. Toss in a few kilometers of driving around Flagstaff while there and back, we are adding up to about 1,000 miles or more in the space of 4 and 7/8 days. No Porsche vehicles were harmed in the driving of this epic however, as we went en masse in a neighbors SUV. Also German and also of Stuttgart, but not a Porsche. We actually ate on the way at a “Cracker Barrel” restaurant much to the discomfiture of Mrs. Cooper (no Gray Poupon you understand) but a blast for me... Fried Chicken and Sweet Ice Tea! Mount Wilson Tour Story by Michael Knudsen
Greg gathers the troops for pre-tour directions.
First, many thanks to Greg Lush for leading us to the mountain! Trying to keep several dozen Porsches together on a Saturday morning drive up the Santa Ana freeway is not for the faint of heart. So…thanks Greg. Our departure point was the Krispy Kremes in Orange, and the photo directly above is the drivers’ meeting about our route, what to expect, and telephone numbers just in case. As you can see, it couldn’t have been a more ideal day weather-wise. Greg’s Hawaiian shirt and flip-flops set the mood perfectly. Our second meeting point was the rooftop parking lot of the Sports Chalet in La Canada Flintridge. There we collected a few more for the drive, and discussed some of the fine points of the Angeles Crest Highway. For those that haven’t driven this road, it is definitely a “bucket list” drive. Breathtaking is almost always an overused description, but not in this case. It was my first time, and I can say honestly it compares very
well with Highway 1, Ortega Highway, Highway 9 and lots of the other most scenic stretches in the Golden State. We left the parking lot and, after staging along the first part of Angeles Crest, we were off. A couple dozen flat 6’s heading up to roughly 5,700 feet, but
on the way, working off a little excess tire rubber. It’s about a 20 mile drive, but it goes by quickly with one incredible view after another. As you can see, we weren’t breaking any speed limits, but it really was better to take in the views along the way. The trip up the Santa Ana freeway was no picnic (who ARE all these people?) but the drive up the mountain more than made up for it. One of the interesting aspects of Mt Wilson, apart from the observatory, is the antenna farm up there. These are just a small number of what must be hundreds of antennas all over the mountain-top. Here, the group conversation focused on why their remotes aren’t working. It turned out all the other RF in the area made our little remotes voiceless. It also made a pretty good case for why we should always have real keys to unlock our cars -- which we did. (Continued on Page 35)

43rd Annual White Gloves Concours Story by Garey Cooper
Or, behind the mike and trying not to electrify elocution When trying to be an emcee, there are certain combinations of words into phrases to torture even the most poised of speakers and certainly “The 43rd, etc. etc. is up there. Try to say this a few dozen times during the day without dropping a word or two. It can be trying. But it is never trying to be with the OCR annual Concour(s) (Do NOT pronounce the “S”, it ain’t sophisticated). This year we returned to Lantern Bay Park in Dana Point. It was a memorable day. We got to show our cars and mingle with friends under the, “Warm California Sun, where they’re out there having fun”. Venue Ventures First, I must discuss the fact that returning to Lantern Bay was something of an achievement in and of itself. It’s always been a popular destination but according to some philistine’s comments, we had conducted ourselves in less than stellar fashion and left a veritable 3-mile island clean up for the city after our departure. The truth of this is very much up for debate, but in politics and parks and recreation usage, perception is reality. We were stuck with the accusation, never having had our day in court. Thanks entirely to Mr. Follis and his crew, mended fences and Mr. Follis, with superb oratorical blandishments, was believed. We found ourselves back at this most desirable of locations for our 43rd White Gloves. However, we were under scrutiny and the question was, “we would qualify for a return?” Stay tuned for the answer young buckaroo’s... (Continued on Page 11)

The Elephants: Meet Mosha.
Schedule Shmedule One industrial titan stated that to really make something happen you, “had to have a good plan and less than enough time to do the job itself.” Nothing focuses human endeavor like too little time. While I’m not sure that sentiment would hold true on say death row, it works in Concours. Consider that we had to herd/shepherd more than 100 Porsches, some extremely finicky race cars, through a choke point the size of a misers pocket onto a grass field to be ready for a 9;00AM opening ceremony with a Marine Color Guard, a member of Dana Point City Council and so on. Okay, thanks to a certain traffic guru named Mr. Paul Wilkinson, this was done right on time. We were ready, ready, ready! I do have to smile at the recollection of a Porsche 962 racecar barking and snarling through the early morning past the windows of the Marriott and across a grass field. What would Herr Piech think? Laugh I hope. Blanche is neither the most quiet nor docile of cars to coax through the same gap. You can just hear the conversation, “Dear, we are by the Pacific Ocean right? Not a race track?” Follow the Sun Or let the sun follow us as it turns out. I don’t know why (because I am a not so easy early riser) that all Porsche events happen at the fabled O-Dark Thirty, but they do. Coffee is the answer and we went through several gallons of that dark liquid. But the people behind the scenes were on the scene beginning at the ungodly and staying until the almost reasonable to see it through. At that hour piercing car lights wobbled up and down across the field to find their position with the help of volunteers; we should have given them torches. Color Guard Thanks to Dick and Chris DeRose, we had a Marine Color Guard from Camp Pendleton to open our day. These men represented the Headquarters Company of the 5th Marines: Sergeant Hernandez, Corporal McMurtie, Lance (Continued on Page 14)
She needs your support. In fact, a whole species does. Dana Point was hand-picked to host the Elephant Parade¹s firstever appearance in the United States after having successful exhibitions in London, Milan, and other global destinations. With a commitment to conservation and the preservation of the world¹s most majestic mammals ¬ including the variety of whales living seconds of the coastline ¬ Dana Point was thrilled for the opportunity to welcome the artistic spectacle of culture and creativity to the shores of Southern California. Asian elephants are on the verge of extinction, and the commitment for their preservation started with a special elephant known as Mosha. After stepping on an abandoned land mine, Mosha was fit with the world¹s first-ever prosthesis for a baby elephant. Her powerful strides inspired father and son duo, Mike and Marc Spits, to create Elephant Parade®in 2006. As a socially-conscious business enterprise, Elephant Parade has grown from a grassroots movement into a global crusade combining corporate, celebrity and community support. Through the sale of merchandise and auction of the original art pieces, the exhibition has raised over $6 million dollars to help support the world¹s most majestic land mammals and raise global awareness of issues affecting their dramatic plight. . All of the custom, life-size artworks are available for purchase now or at the Grand Auction November 17, 2013.

Mr. President Greg Lush our President Pro Tem for the Orange Coast Region also came to talk to us. He looked very natty in a jacket and tie. I didn’t even know he owned a tie! Greg is used to traveling at some high speeds so slowing down to spend time with us in Dana Point was much appreciated.
What’s that going on? In addition to the usual Concours Awards we had some special mentions for areas such as the picnic display and “Peoples Choice” car awards. Peoples Choice was won by Raul Lizalde who was with his son Noah and his pristine restored 356. It was truly a beautiful entrant. The picnic award winners were: 1st place Bob and Cindy Nimtz, with a close 2nd by Arnie and Carolyn Schusterman. Pro Tem Lisa Bartlett was our trophy presentation person. We must remember that Concours is a competition. It’s part of the Zone 8 Division of PCA. As such, it awards points which accumulate as participants work through an entire season. The Concours classes, as in most other Porsche activities, cover from early cars to later models. It might be said the most coveted and hardest to earn are the Division Trophy in Full, Unrestored, and Street. Make no mistake that a win in any Concours category is noteworthy. However, these particular classes involve more than just a weekend’s worth of dedication. Full Concours was won by David Walker in his 1970 914-6. Rice’s Ramblings:
Chain Tensioners Story by Lee Rice
Old problems Some old problems never seem to go away. Recently, I encountered some of the “real 911” problems we would like to forget about. So much bad publicity is still coming out about the M86 and M96 IMS problems and let us not forget the fabulous ‘Mezger engine’ had it’s problems too! Chain Tensioners –again. Since 1967 (way back in the olden days), the 901 engine (911) has had problems with the early Mk1 chain tensioners. It used the engine oil to fill it’s reservoir. This oil was drawn into the tensioner oil chamber holding the piston against the chain “support” and the support wheel. This produced a mild tension against the chain, which the hydraulic subsequently held taught all the time. It was a great idea except that the engine oil became contaminated by carbon and dirt in the oil. That caused the piston o-ring to fail and tension was lost – rather dramatically - as the chain went slack, jumped timing and the cam then pushed valves into the pistons: BANG! Very early 901 engines had forged rockers and they would not break as easily as the later ones did. Those early rockers drove valves into pistons, bent rods and I have even heard of a crankshaft getting damaged as well. Vary nasty business. Mk II tensioners were sealed tensioners with their own (clean) oil reservoir. These worked remarkably well, only the chains still jumped time
and rockers still broke and the valves bent? Another problem was the chain “guides” or “ramps”. Early 901/911 engines used rubber chain ramps. It was thought that the rubber would quiet the chain noise; and it did until the rubber aged, became hard and broke from the loose chains. Then, the broken ramp would be pulled in between the chain and the chain wheel. Again, very ugly! Chain ramps were upgraded to hi-temperature thermo-plastic and the chain tensioners were revised (Mk.III) by creating new o-rings and an improved internal check valve. But the chains still got loose. In 1984 the 3.2 Carrera upgraded to oil pressurized tensioners. (Mk.IV) This was reported to be ‘the cure for all chain issues”. Porsche was sure of it, and so were we - for a while. I recall Bruce Anderson, PCA National Technical Chairman, remarking that the real problem was the use of the all steel “supports” and he recommended upgrading to the new 1982 “support” with two bronze bushing in each support. It replaced the cheaper, all steel, support Porsche used in production. Apparently, the all steel support, which pivots on a steel shaft (called a “spud”) was binding on the spud. The steel against steel caused wear, galling and the support would seize in position regardless of whether or not the oil pressure tensioner worked perfectly. I know about this because just after installing my own oil pressure tensioners in my 3.0 RS engine (and thinking I was forever through with tensioner problems) I started hearing a chain noise sounding like a loose chain. I thought, “impossible!” But, after a few days it only became louder. I removed the chain housing covers and saw my tensioners tight against the supports, only the chain was loose. It had seized support on the spud! I upgraded to the 1982 bushed supports that afternoon and that ended that problem.
Today I see almost every 911 with the late oil pressure tensioners but few have the late supports. One that recently left my shop had a classic failure for the all steel support sticking and the chain becoming loose. This particular loose chain failure caused one of the intermediated shaft’s chain drive gears to snap all of its teeth off. And the other gear wheel was dramatically wearing away with deformed and bent teeth. It required the engine be complete disassembled and repaired. My recommendation: for bent valves, chains, chain wheels, chain gears, all new supports, etc, etc., if you have a pre 1983 911, make sure you have the late chain support installed. I believe this as critical, if not more so , than having the late tensioners installed. But even better, do them both! (See I-gear chain wheel images below)

the level of preparation on this car. Unrestored was won by Rob Greene in his 2003 996 Coupe. It’s nice to see the 996 series attracting concours level attention and this was a prime example of how well these cars can be prepared. The Street category was won by the long-term team of Joe and Karen Nedza. Their 1963 356 Coupe must be approaching legendary status as a West Coast based competitor and has won many awards over time. They also exemplify how Concours preserves and maintains these cars for future generations. The total awards list is on page 33. I shall return! Oh my! What a day and what a time we had. Again, I’d say to anyone and everyone with any interest in our Porsche cars to come out to the White Gloves. It is about as nice a day as one can spend and an event the entire family can enjoy. The final word, you’ll be glad to hear, is that we did receive a note from the city and indeed we have the park in Dana Point next year! Mark you calendars for Sunday, June 1st, 2014. Book Review:
STRANGE BUT TRUE TALES OF CAR COLLECTING Compiled by Keith Martin and the editors of Sports Car Market. Published August, 2013 by Motorbooks, Minneapolis, MN Review by Bruce Herrington Once upon a time, in the dim dark reaches of the past, on the way to visit a girlfriend in a Maryland Suburb of DC, what to my wondering eyes should appear but a guy washing out the interior of a car with a garden hose. The car in question was a 1957 250 Testa Rosa Ferrari, arguably (along with the DBR-1) the most beautiful sports car ever built. Today these cars are worth eight figures and it’s doubtful if a garden hose ever gets close to even their outsides. I bring this up because the first story in STRANGE BUT TRUE... is of a 250TR whose owner threw gasoline inside, followed by a match, because he thought the car was worth more in cash payout than as a car. And to think that these cars are now worth 7 figures. This book is a collection of anecdotes by a variety of authors, each telling stories of adventures and misadventures experienced by various collectors of cars. It is divided into three sections 1) Fame and Fortune, 2) Wrecks and Ruins and 3) Stranger than Fiction. The stories are well worth telling (and reading); some are moderately well known, most have never been publicized before. Some, it seems, deal with attempted insurance fraud. Included is the full story of the ‘sunken Bugatti’ at the Mullin Museum in Oxnard, as well as the astronomical price paid at Auction for its acquisition. Then there is also the true story behind the pictures of the block ‘barn’ discovered to be warehousing hundreds of dusty old cars that circulated on the Internet 3-4 years ago. No, it wasn’t an accidental find by a couple who had purchased a retirement home. The excitement over Jay Leno’s acquisition of a Model J Dusenberg is a strange contrast to my ‘ho-hum’ college experience, when a neighbor had this shiny monster of a car parked in front of
30
his garage. He said it was a Dusenberg Model J, and he (a High School AutoShop teacher) had been hired to install a brand new made-from-scratch crankshaft, then drive the car some 80 miles back to the upstate New York home of the owner. Yes, in those days a model J Dusey was a bit unique, but otherwise just an old car. Those were the days when a friend of mine and I turned down the purchase of Louis Chiron’s Grand Prix Talbot-Lago (car number 5 in those old, late ‘40s vintage B&W race pictures) complete with an antique Buffet (left over from an ancient dining room) full of extra engine parts. We turned it down because the seller, hot for a new speedboat, would not come down from his $1,500 asking price. All the pieces in STRANGE BUT TRUE TALES OF CAR COLLECTING
are short and eminently readable. The fact that there are so many different authors represented provides a stimulating variety of writing styles, some almost poetically eloquent. The fascinating historical specifics, which are included in every article represent a tremendous amount of research effort. Many of the stories are about people who have a special feeling for a particular car or model. Some are of long, discouraging but ultimately successful searchers. Others are more about compulsive hoarding. Each one is uniquely interesting and concise. For example there is the story of the struggle of one individual to ‘collect’ one of the three Corvettes that Brigs Cunningham (and Zora Arkus-Dontov) entered into the 1960 Le Mans race, each achieving a Class Win for Brigs efforts. This article on the story of this team and the car they developed represents an captivatingly different slant than the story of the team’s experiences in the race itself: well told in the September 2013 issue of Vintage Racecar. STRANGE BUT TRUE TALES OF CAR COLLECTING contains 256 6-1/4 x 9-1/4 inch pages, with 20 color and 20 B&W illustrations. It should be available, for $28.00, from your favorite bookseller (ask for it) or from http:// www.motorbooks.com

Mt Wilson Tour:
(Continued from Page 7)
All that done, we headed to the pavilion for a snack and to gather for the 1:00 PM docent tour. As one could assume, our docent Angie knew the most obscure of facts about the mountain and the observatory there. The main attraction -- the 100 inch instrument -- was developed by a man named Hale, but paid for by a Los Angeles resident named Hooker, hence the name. Hale later got his due, though, as the 200-inch instrument at Mt Palomar is named after him. Its interesting to note that Mt, Wilson started as a solar observatory and some of the first instruments built there were towers like this one, which is 150 feet tall, to study the sun. Angie told us Hale thought it was important to study the sun first, if we wanted to study other stars. The light is picked up on top, but routed to the building below for detailed study. After a quick visit to the little museum there, we were off to the main attraction, the 100-inch Hooker telescope. Housed in a huge white dome - reminds me of old science fiction television of the 50’s -- it’s vacant during the daytime, but open for public viewing. A climb up a couple flight of stairs bring us to the viewing room, and this. Thanks one last time to Greg Lush and also to all the other members who make outings like this happen. --- If you’re lucky enough to drive a Porsche, you’re lucky enough --

Rices mblings :(Continued from Page 17) Also annoying Another annoying problem with our “classic” 911s is frozen hardware. An example of this is the last engine cross brace-mount (Engine Support). The engine is held to the body’s rubber/steel encased mounts with M12mm bolts. Often, these M-12 bolts are very difficult to loosen because of normal moisture contamination and over tightening. Early 911s use a M-12 bolt and a M12 lock nut, which requires using a wrench to hold the lock nut and a socket/wrench to loosen the bolt. Adding to the problem, it’s in a cramped engine compartment. Many engine supports have the end part twisted or torn off from trying to remove the bolt/nut and that’s even after using penetrant oil to lubricate the threads. I like to replace the early engine support with the later one which has internal threads so no nut is used. I also strongly recommend using a good antiseize paste liberally on the bolt to insure it will not be difficult to remove. And
At Le Mans the 991 RSR makes it’s mark in a big way! The 911 only needs 65 Ft/lb of torque. Not An Impact Gun Blast! Spark plug trouble? Having trouble getting to Nr 1 Spark plug cable to check the ignition timing? Use an N.r4 cylinder cable. It is exactly the
same timing as Nr1, and makes it much easier to gain access. We welcome comments, opinions suggestions-what’s on your mind? riceturbos@sbcglobal.net or call at reasonable ~hours 714 539-1042.

EDITORS NOTE’S:
(Continued from Page 5)
To all I say, listen to the words of “America the Beautiful” and go drive some of it. For spacious skies and amber waves of grain, or innumerable grains of sand across the non-fruited desert you can’t beat ol’ Columbia gem of the oceans. With four of us in the car, it was nice that we remained on speaking terms through the whole wheeled engagement. Although I was a bit lost as my “Clarence Carter” music collection had, unbeknownst to me been, wiped out in my transition to the latest software update on my smarter than me cell phone. App or Apt Speaking of smarter than me cellphones, as most are anyway, Porsche has a series of App’s that feature the working details of their latest wundercars. The Panamera is about as complicated in feature sets as say an ocean liner and they could probably teach a class on how to enter and then lose your data in one easy button push. However, the App can bring you back from semi-destruction of your digital lode, remarkable really and so very 21st century. As a for instance, a single button can work differently depending upon how long you hold the button down. Gosh, I wonder what happens if you spill your semi-ventilatte-cappucino-mocha down your shirt or blouse while pushing one button down and holding it there for 20 seconds as the rictus of agony accompanying scalding of your sensitive solar plexus carries your mind away? No telling, but I am betting it would fall under what our parents used to call “all hell breaking loose” or something approaching it. No worries, open the App after entering your security code(s), find the proper menu and dial it all up... Oh, and watch the road, you are in a car.
recently. It points to a future certainly. One automotive writer has stated that the “stretch” Panamera was built specifically in answer to Chinese market requirements, as most Panamera’s there are chauffeur driven and the patron needs a back seat as big as say Shanghai to lay about in and dictate mandarin business messages while rapidly proceeding between noodle shops. Perhaps his own noodle shops at that. How will this affect Porsche? Speculate away, I have my thoughts perhaps to share another day.
bypass and the peasants seem to appreciate that. Sunday though, our laps were after the Miata race and they were still picking up pieces of detached Miata, which curtailed our shenanigans no small amount, no telling what it did for the Miatas. It would have been a great time to open a Mazda Miata used parts store. Still it was like getting a single lick at the ice cream cone and having to give it back. It would have been lots of fun to do a few laps with some velocity!
Coronado Road Races Whooha! The Coronado Road Races are for historic cars and are held every year at the Coronado Air Base in San Diego. This year, being the 50th anniversary of the 911, the organizers asked for representative samples through the decades and declared themselves more than happy to accept “Blanche Bickerson”, my white 911 GT3, as one example. For such an exemplary self-sacrifice, I was given a special parking place, two “get ya anywhere” weekend passes and on each day track time in front of the huddled masses. Too true. Blanche was preened and Mr. Terry “Model A” Hardgrave and I passed all of the lines with only a slight upper class sneer to our special parking place in a square expressly reserved for us better types. Trouble was, the less better types had to have a special pass to get to the 50 year display so we mostly displayed to ourselves, oh well. But the track time was fun, a two-lap run around the road course. Saturday we could stretch Blanche’s lovely legs a bit (her best feature) and just met around the “ton” as the English used to say at the end of the front straight. I uncorked the exhaust
Porsche Sports Variety There are of course many ways to enjoy your Porsche. And you can enjoy so many of them with your own friendly folks at the OCR! But it is kind of funny that the fans of each aspect; Concours, Autocross, Tour, Rallye... may want to be sure that YOU realize their way is the best way, if not the only way, to enjoy that Stuttgart Stormer. Sort of like saying that you don’t really like Fried Chicken (hard to believe) and your table mate goes out of their way to entreat you to taste theirs as it’s, “really different” and, “you’ve got to like this”. So the morale is not to argue about which is better; screaming around cones making some tire manufacture extra money, or laying under your car using a toothbrush to remove grit from your brake backing plate while breaking your own back. Best to smile and “maintain a pose imperious” as was suggested by Gilbert and Sulllivan. Do remember to come out with us, we don’t really care how you enjoy your car as long as you do enjoy it. So long then and happy trails until we meet at some Porsche event somewhere, somehow.
Pan Pacific Back to America the Beautiful for a moment or two here. It is worth asking the question, or more likely stating the obvious, whether China or the USA will be Porsche’s biggest market in the next generation? I don’t actually consider it much of a question as in terms of quantities sold it is almost inevitably going to be China. It is truly hard to believe that Porsche has used the Chinese Auto show to introduce some new models
