PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Greg Lush

So Many Doors O

kay, I will be the first to admit that by far my favorite Porsches have two doors. There you go, I’ve said it. This declaration is not to say that I don’t have appreciation for the beauty of those “other” Porsches with more than two doors, I just never imagined our family owning one. Yet, there was this strange undertow beckoning my curiosity toward these wonderful Porsche cars, but could they really satisfy my thirst for driving? Sure, the Cayenne seemed to have the wherewithal to pull my track car (if only our Infiniti QX56 would die) and with the introduction of the Macan, it seemed as though the lines were getting blurry between a four-door and a two-door vehicle. The stars seemingly were aligning to an opportunity to possibly work in another Porsche to our luscious stable of cars. Annie’s men’s clothing business (jhilburn.com) was continuing to gain momentum and shoving those shirts, slacks, sport coats, in her little Mercedes trunk was starting to become quite ridiculous. Our first step in the journey was to convince my lovely bride that we needed, yes I used the word “needed,” one more Porsche in the garage. As many of you know Annie, she lovingly supports my car addictions; however, was questioning “why do we need another Porsche?” These words out of her mouth were almost spoken in a different language. I was struggling to even wrap my head around the concept. Over several months’ time, as experienced husbands know, my persistence was starting to gain traction and wearing Annie down on the “too many Porsches in the garage” challenge. We cleared

that hurdle and it was now time to give Riverside Porsche a call and strategically start positioning the perfect candidate for us to take out for a few hours. The first candidate happened to be a nicely appointed 2017 loaner base model Porsche Macan. So we were off, headed up the mountains to see if this little four cylinder turbocharged powerplant would have enough oomph to make the driving experience enjoyable for me as well. We were absolutely delighted by the performance of this base model 2017 Macan. The handling, the styling, comfort, the appointments, and the power were all spot on and seemed to be putting a huge smile on Annie’s face. The next step in my journey would be to configure the car in a manner that made it somewhat unique. As you can see from this article’s picture, the car is black and we decided to go with an all-black-out approach to the design of this luscious Macan. First thing we asked Riverside Porsche was to get us the traditional five spoke turbo option wheels (21 inch) factory wheel set. One of Annie’s disenchantment’s with the appearance of a car is over time, when the brake dust builds up on the wheels, so we decided to go with a black satin powder coating, which hides most of the brake dust. As an added bonus, and the result of working with a dealership filled with car enthusiasts, Riverside Porsche took it on their own accord to also have the exhaust tips powder coated, fantastic! Finally, a little bit of ceramic coating on the front windows to obtain a consistent shading to match the back windows and assist in blocking out the majority of the heat, bound to be pulled into this all black car.

Throughout this entire process there was never a doubt that the vehicle we would purchase from Porsche would be fantastic, fun to drive, and a good longterm vehicle. For me, it was more about, is it a car that I would like to drive around? You know, the feeling you get when you look at your car in the parking lot, or out the window from the coffee shop, does it make you smile? While the Macan is new to our family and possibly we have a bit of a honeymoon period happening. I find myself taking the Macan when Annie and I are running errands on the weekends more frequently than my 997 Cab S. What does that mean? I have no idea. If you are even slightly hesitant about a four-door Porsche quenching your thirst for a fun driving experience, you should really take another look.

LETTERFrom the Editor

Story by Marcia Salans Photo by Dick Sartor

Well, it’s finally fall! NASCAR’s working to a crescendo, Hockey’s started pre-season and Football’s begun; so get comfortable, grab your coffee, cola or pumpkin latte, relax and enjoy your October Pando! In addition to a variety of interesting articles, you’ll find an expanded Autocross segment, which the Pando Team plans to continue; specifically more and larger photos capturing the excitement and passion of our PCA-OCR members driving their Porsches through different and challenging courses. Interested? Inspired to check it out? Believe me, whether you’re planning, participating, learning or observing, you’ll get a friendly warm PCA-OCR welcome at any Autocross event. Need an example? Check out the “AX August 20, 2017 PCA-OCR at the ‘Monaco of Autocross’ San Pedro LA Outer Harbor, Berth 46” with a fresh course design provided by Michael Oest. Speaking of “AX”, one of its most devoted and involved drivers is Bob Scheussler who’s involved his family with the sport; and in “Pfun Pfacts” you’ll see Bob was the recipient of PCA’s 2012 Family of the Year and owned a variety of Porsches throughout the years. Continuing the family theme, our President Greg Lush often signs off referencing People Porsche Passion, so who better to write about the new addition to his “family” – a new Macan. Also, I think you’ll really enjoy “My PEC Experience” as Christian Asis shares his Dad and Son joining him in his Porsche adventures.

If you wonder do people really stumble into those amazing garage finds? – wait until you read Woody Dike’s story of finding a ’59 Porsche for $2200. And to those that Porsche is an aspirational dream, read James Lee “For the Love of Porsche” and John Sagud’s “What’s in My Garage.” Traveling comes in all forms, long and short-term; so join 14 OCR members as Judy Lech chronicles the Porsche Parade to Spokane, WA, and then locally pretend you’re one of the “rallistas” participating in another one of Larry Moore’s extremely popular Gimmick Rally’s starting in Santa Ana and ending in Brea. There’s a lot more inside with Don Chapman’s Threshold Braking and Braking Correctly, Bruce Herrington’s Book Review, Rice’s Ramblings, Barry Michaels’ inside look at the Pando Award, and Denny Asbury’s thoughts about your Porsche’s true identity while in your garage! Before signing off, it’s a privilege to welcome our two new advertisers, Autobahn Adventures and Shift Bespoke to our PCA-OCR family and I hope they’re able to visit one of our meetings soon! Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington

Bobby’s got a brand-new car

by Zidrou, artwork by Sebastian Chebret, published 9/26/17, by Words and Pictures, Lake Forest,CA. It must be admitted, up front, that this book has no Porsche content. It is not a book for Porschephiles to own and read, but it could have an important place in the perpetuation of the ‘car hobby’. Many marque clubs today report declining membership. Where once teenagers bought cars before they were old enough to apply for driver’s licenses, and showed up at the DMV on the very day of their eligibility, it is now reported that many teenagers wait years beyond their eligibility, to apply for driver’s licenses. It has even been postulated that due to Uber and Lyft, total car ownership in 2020 will be less than in 2015. And it has been reported that Google/Alphabet already has ‘numerous’ self-driving cars zooming employees from building to building amongst its Silicon Valley operations. Modern cars, even the non-self-driving ones, tend to be self-propelled computerson-wheels. Where once a few wrenches and a screw driver or two would put a mechanic in business, now it takes a computer, and a specialized one at that. The ‘shade tree mechanic’ of the John Muir How to Keep your Volkswagen Alive (arguably the first of the ‘complete idiot’ books) is now the guy with [only] a home computer. Many current TV commercials for cars tout their sound systems, their driversupport sensor systems, systems to relieve drivers from the effort of parking the car, etc., but say nothing about drivability, performance, and absolutely nothing about maintainability or, perish the thought, hopup ability.

What is there in all of the above to generate interest in the car hobby, to promote the mystique of certain marques (i.e. Porsche), to preserve the value of ‘collector cars’, or even acknowledge the joy of driving? Many, cultural/political movements have recognized/promoted the need to inculcate adherence to their principles in its youth at very tender ages, in order to preserve and promote their cause. Why should the car hobby, and the Porsche Club in particular, not adopt a similar philosophy and start today, to germinate and nurture the Porschephiles of tomorrow? Bobby is a book not for Porschephiles to read and enjoy, but to gift to their progeny in hopes of developing Porschephiles for the future. The story takes Bobby (a 10? year old) from his decision to buy a car “that goes VAROOM! for real”, to cruising through town and chauffeuring his parents (who are ordered to wear seat belts), home from their respective jobs. Bobby purchases everything “with his magic card (the one that pays for everything)”. Bobby enjoys the drive, but the book says nothing about

the satisfactions of DIY maintenance/ repair, the thrill of competition, or the social interaction of showing a car. Bobby’s got a brand-new car is hardbound with 32, 9x10 inch, highly graphic pages (e.g. the cover). With large type and short sentences it is intended for readers of 5-8 years old. As I remember, at that and slightly more advanced age, I loved getting books for Christmas. I have mixed emotions about endorsing this book as a means of motivating a new generation of car enthusiasts. I support the message that cars are nice, but cannot condone the sloppy English used in the title. By the time you read this, the book should be available for $17.95 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it) or from www. quatroknows.com

PORSCHE PEOPLE : Pfun Pfacts Up close and personal with Bob Scheussler

An OCR member since 1998, his family is the recipient of PCA’s 2012 Family of the Year Award. Since the early 2000’s, Bob and his family have been involved and instrumental to the success of OCR’s Autocross. Bob has held Autocross positions of registration, timing, co-chair and now Emeritus. Bob’s tireless hours, effort and energy toward something he loves, including fast German cars, is certainly evident. Have you experienced Autocross lately? Bob always wanted a ‘true sports car,’ so Porsche was the logical choice with his first Porsche being a 912 Soft-Window Targa. He’s only owned eleven Porsche’s over the years! His current stable contains a ’10 Cayenne Transsyberia, ’13 Boxster and an ’85 911 Carrera (track car). But, these will probably not be his last! Bob did mention his favorite Porsche is a 993 C4/S Coupe because of its awesome smooth lines and it being the last of the air-cooled engines. His favorite thing about OCR / Autocross? The people, camaraderie, friendship and driving!

DRIVING SKILLS Story by Don Chapman Photos by Paul Novotne

How to Drive Fast Using Your Brakes

This Brakes are very powerful devices designed to decelerate and stop your car. With each new generation of automobiles, braking systems and their ability to stop your car have increasingly improved. We have come a long way from the drum brakes of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, to the powerful rotor and caliper (Disk Brake) set up available in most cars today.

Regardless of the exact brake setup on your new or older Porsche, there are a few braking concepts that must be mastered to be faster on the track.

Most everyone understands the basics of braking.

Threshold braking is the art of slowing your Porsche down the quickest possible way by maintaining the optimal amount of brake force. In other words, applying enough brake pressure to stop the car without going beyond the “threshold” of your tires traction circle. Reaching your personal braking threshold limit is not easy to master and requires a great deal of practice.

Braking performance is basically determined by our Porsches’ mechanical systems and driver input. The driver first applies pressure on the brake pedal; the pedal pressure creates hydraulic pressure then enables the brake caliper to squeeze a disk (rotor), which slows the wheel. The wheel, of course, is covered with a tire rubber compound that then provides the final point of friction to the road surface that in turn, slows or stops the car. It is important to note that most of the stopping force in all vehicles comes from the front brakes/wheels/tires. 12 PANDO | October 2017

The first and most basic concept to master is Threshold Braking.

Some of you may be asking if learning the art of Threshold braking is necessary in this age of technological wizardry, specifically ABS (Anti lock Brake System). The simple answer is yes. The Anti lock systems on all cars, no matter how modern, are reactionary systems. They detect the onset of a locking

wheel and release the brake pressure until grip is restored to that wheel. ABS only steps in when the driver has gone beyond the threshold of available grip for the tires. In other words, if the ABS system has kicked in, it means you have made a mistake and Dr. Porsche is stepping in to save you. While the new ABS systems react very quickly, threshold braking to your car’s maximum traction limit without triggering the ABS, will save you time around the track.

Braking correctly actually starts with how you take your foot off the throttle.

You do not want to abruptly lift off the throttle. You do want to gently ease off the throttle quickly! Then you can begin to apply brake pressure, until you reach the maximum threshold braking for your Porsche. This is where practice comes to play. Because you will be using the maximum brake pressure, there is a danger

of going beyond your Porsche’s threshold of grip. If you brake too hard coming into a turn and lock up the front wheels, those of you without ABS will lose all steering control. Those of you with ABS will feel a sudden vibration in the brake peddle as the ABS system modulates the braking pressure to keep the wheels from locking up. To correct braking lock up, you must ease your foot off the brake pedal to regain control and then reapply brake pressure to continue braking. Simple, in theory, but not so easy when you are trying to slow your car down from 120mph to 30mph for the upcoming hairpin turn. Fortunately, you can practice your braking skills on the street. Try to control your braking so that you or a passenger cannot feel the point when you lift off the throttle and apply the brakes. Try to modulate the brakes so that you or a passenger cannot feel the exact point when the car comes to a complete stop. On an empty street or parking lot, try to apply the maximum brake pressure to the point of lock. How much pressure did

it take to make your wheels lock up or to engage the ABS system. When you get to that point of losing traction, work on easing off the brakes and reapplying brake pressure to stop in the fastest possible time. Practice this technique as many times as it takes to learn just how your Porsche will react to extreme braking inputs, and until you can threshold brake reliably without locking the wheels or setting off the ABS. Learning how to threshold brake and understanding your Porsche’s amazing braking capabilities will help you to become a much better driver.

AUTO-X CORNER

August 20, 2017 PCA-OCR Autocross

PCA-OCR “Monaco of Autocross”, San Pedro, LA Outer Harbor Berth 46. Walter’s Porsche of Riverside 2017 Auto-X Championship Series Story by Bruce Powers, Photos by Paul Novotne For the second month in a row, PCAOCR autocross participants were treated to a beautiful day by the sea in San Pedro. The 7th event of the 2017 Walter’s Porsche of Riverside Autocross Championship Series took place at Berth 46 of the outer LA Harbor. With a light breeze and mostly sunny skies, the PCA-OCR members enjoyed a fantastic day of fun, camaraderie, and everything Porsche and Autocross. We start out by thanking our Series Sponsor, Walter’s Automotive Group, and Porsche of Riverside for their support of the program! Additionally, thanks to our 2017 Series Support Sponsors GMG and MOMO of Italy. Don and Jody Chapman of Surterre Properties were the Event Day Sponsor. Located in Newport Beach, they handle real estate transactions. Don was on hand to address the Porsche Autocross crowd and promote their personal touch to the business of real estate.

16 PANDO | October 2017

The Autocross Crew appreciates the support of all our sponsors and especially the commitment that our recurring day of event sponsors has made to the event over the years! We always have first-time participants, this event being no exception. The people that are new to the event are always impressed with the friendly attitude, the jovial kidding and the FUN that everyone is having. The Instruction they receive is always done in a manner that allows them to grow as a driver while having the time of their life in their Porsche. We changed things up a bit this event, starting and finishing in a different area than the previous two events at San Pedro, which made more room for the paddock. Also, we had a new course designer, special thank you to Michael Oest! It’s great to have fresh and different perspectives on course designs. The course was short in elapsed time

and just under the half mile distance. Because of this, we added laps and everyone received 15 laps of fun instead of the usual 12! The common theme is FUN and Friends. Friends that are made at the events throughout the year and the fun everyone is having, even when not driving. It’s fun and rewarding for the instructors to help the newbies to improve and get faster and better. It’s tremendously rewarding for instructors to coach more seasoned Autocross drivers through the course and help them realize gains in time; as well as car control and understanding of the course to become more competitive at the discipline. Fantastic Fun for those learning better how to manage their car while at the same time testing their driving skills. Fun finding out what it’s like to have complete control over the car and yet making it “dance” on the course. Fun competing with fellow drivers for

PORSCHE

Who hasn’t walked into their garage and admired the sleeping creature that Porsche

has invented for those with imagination? The creature can come alive with the turn of a key, and lurking within the exciting growling sounds is the fantasy of an animal that is both supple and beautiful. At the same time, there is a hidden excitement that can flash from the creature with lightning speed and expose the danger lurking in the mechanical monster. Too much? I don’t think so.What Porsche lover has not fantasized as they snuggle down into the racing seat and absorb the gentle vibrations that they are now controlling a beautiful creature that is capable of epic and heroic adventure. After all….It only takes a little Imagination and Fantasy. ’

ourteen OCR members headed to the Pacific Northwest area to participate in the Porsche Parade. Along with others, we drove approximately 1,300 miles each way. Many from South County were also going to do some traveling to Yellowstone and other areas while in the Pacific Northwest area. I solicited comments and photos from those attending to be included in this article. Malcolm Macondray said “he didn’t win anything but did very well in the Volunteer’s Drawing Goodie Bag.” It was a Parade and that equals people and Porsches, lots of both! There were old friends and acquaintances

to see again, as well as new people to meet and chat with and look for at future parades. The facilities were great and Spokane, plus the surrounding countryside, were great to explore. I took advantage of the return leg to take all two lane roads south until connecting with Interstate 5 in Oregon. Great roads and vistas that I had much to myself for long periods. Oh, did I mention, it was hot?” Stephan Hans did quite a lot of volunteering and Concours judging which keeps the flow of events moving.

Gimmick Rally – Out of 157 entrants, Barry & Denise Michaels took 11th place and Pete & Judy Lech were 13 in the 2-person category that was a 116 mile trek through beautiful scenery and easy backroads, checking in at points along the way by drawing one card and adding up the roll of the dice. There was also a quiz and an odometer check that would be included in the final tally. It all ended at the real western town of Wallace, Idaho, better known as “The Silver Capital of the World,” and there is also a popular marked spot in the road with the sign that designates that “This is the center of the Universe”. Concours – Held in beautiful Riverfront Park, which is situated along the banks of the Spokane River, where there was more than enough room to be able to display the cars by models. Pete & Judy Lech received a second place in 911 PP06 Touring. Club Award- The winner of the PCA Best Overall Newsletter, Betty Jo Turner Award, went to Orange Coast Region, Garey Cooper, and Pando. Denise & Barry accepted the award for our club.

Porsche Parade Spokane, Washington

The Parade being held in the Pacific Northwest area brought out a great number of first Parade participants, who were all eager to see what this fantastic event was all about. One of the great perks for going to a Parade is making contact with friends and acquaintances you only get to see maybe once a year. Pete and I were very lucky to have meals to share and time to gab between events with former OCR members who now reside in Oregon: Dianne & Lon Jackson, Dave &

SANORANAPL PCA/OCR August 2017 Gimmick Rally

Story and Photos by Larry Moore

The

morning was overcast and warmer than normal as we arrived at Original Mike’s in downtown Santa Ana for the start of the rally. And even though Gloria and I arrived a bit early, several Porsches were already on site. I love to see eager members! The day before, on Saturday at noon, we had 15 RSVPs in hand so I printed 25 copies of the paperwork knowing some nonRSVPs would show; and they did, 8 of them. So, at 8:45am Gloria opened registration and registered 23 cars. Once registration was complete, I began an extended Driver’s Meeting because this group of Rallistas was about 50% first-time participants. As a result, I discussed the challenges inherent in this event in some depth: 1) navigating the Rally Route following the Route Instructions which were presented in the form of “tulip symbols” (see attached), 2) the rules about identifying Photo Objects (12 of which were included) and the procedure for recording their locations for scoring, 3) the On Route Questions which consisted of counting Railroad Crossings, Bridges the route passed under, ARCO stations past on the left and right, and the number times the route “drove-on” specified roads, and separately, the number of times the route drove “across” specified roads. All in all, from a scoring perspective, the perfect score would be 26 correct answers. At approximately 9:45, the Rallistas were on their way. The route left Original Mike’s and headed north through Santa Ana, then into Orange with a turn around the traffic circle and then north past Chapman College into Placentia. From Placentia, the route transitioned west into Fullerton past Cal State University, then proceeded north up past St. Jude’s Hospital and into the Laguna Lake area. From the Lake area, the route lead up Brea Canyon into Diamond Bar, then east into Chino, and finally back south down Carbon Canyon to the Finish in Brea at the Claim Jumper restaurant.

32 PANDO | October 2017

Well, all went well until Car #1 tried to enter Brea Canyon which was completely closed due to a serious accident which occurred just a short time before. As it turned out, the loss of this leg of the rally wasn’t critical to the success of the rally. Basically, the work-around routing solutions was for the members to head east to the 57 Freeway, then proceed northerly to either the Diamond Bar interchange or Pathfinder interchange, exit the freeway and pick up the rally route on Diamond Bar at Pathfinder. Some of the members called me and I played “traffic controller” and some figured it out on their own. I was very impressed how many of the members, virtually all, 1) wanted to continue on the rally and 2) how many did so. This road closure slowed down the progress of the members and delayed their finishes, but because time is not an issue in these events, “no harm, no foul”. As a matter of fact, this delay tended to smooth out the following problem which was that the restaurant did not have our seating ready due to the slowness of the large party ahead of us. This delay was noticeable, but not serious. Once inside the restaurant, in the air-conditioning, (it was 90 in the parking lot) with a cold glass of beer, all was well. Gloria did her normal great job of scoring the members efforts, and with the help of Dennis and Carol Howey we compiled the Placement List. With this list in hand, I was able to announce the winners. The Winners: The Gold Medal went to the team of Mark Johnson (a veteran) and Kathy Rafferty with a corrected score of 21. The Silver Medal went to the team of Julia Husting (a veteran) and Jeremy Huff with a score of 19. And the Bronze Medal went to; I believe a team new to this event, Rudy Penlosa and Henry McFarland with a score of 17. Supplementing the medals, we distributed $10 Starbucks gift cards to the winners. Congratulations to the winners, and thank you to all the competitors for coming out and supporting this club activity. Your participation makes our club work. Thank you, Larry Moore

My PEC Adventure

Story and Photos by Christian Asis

The 914 has been both maligned and coveted over the years

by owners Earlier this year my Dad, son and I stopped by the newly opened Porsche Experience Center (“PEC”) in Carson, on our way home from an awesome day spent exploring the USS Iowa. I have to commute from my Irvine office to downtown LA approximately once a month, and I’d been eagerly following the progress of PEC’s construction. The PEC is spectacular inside and out, and three generations of Asis males came away with big smiles on their faces even though we hadn’t done anything other than look around. Fast forward to Saturday July 22nd. Thanks to the support and generosity of my wife, I was back in Carson to make a dream come true! This time the trusty and practical Honda van that made the previous trip with the three of us was home in the driveway, and my Dad and I carpooled from Dana Point in my 2016 Cayman GT4, because my wife had booked a 90-minute GT4 experience for me! The folks at PEC were thoughtful enough to reserve a Guards Red GT4 for

34 PANDO | October 2017

me, nearly identical to mine! Oscar, my instructor, greeted me inside and asked a lot good questions which seemed focused on how much driving experience I have and what was I hoping to get out of this opportunity. Turns out, it’s a small world! Oscar’s dad is the owner/proprietor of a fairly recognizable tuning/race shop that used to specialize in Honda/Acura vehicles. Twenty-five years ago (and probably before Oscar was even born), I took my then nearly brand new 1992 Acura Integra GS-R to his dad’s shop for suspension work. I would later find out, first hand, that Oscar is one hell of a driver; but I was immediately comfortable with him and liked how he was working to make sure I got the most out of this experience.

We left my dad in the air-conditioned comfort and walked out into the very hot late morning sunshine. Thankfully, Oscar had already started the car and fired up the AC. As I sunk into the beautiful light-weight carbon bucket seats, I felt immediately at home. Other than some small details, this GT4 looked, felt, and smelled exactly like my own car. We started my session running through various “exercises” including the acceleration straight (which has an awesome, mini-Carousel which is intended to mimic the famous Nordschleife on the Nurburgring) and the low-friction circle (basically a giant, super slippery skid pad). Some of the exercises would be familiar to anyone who has attended the annual Driver’s Education Autocross day that begins the PCA autocross season. I particularly enjoyed the challenge of the black ice simulator and was shocked at how much difference going 28 mph in the wet can be vs. going 25 mph in the wet. My favorite exercise however, was the low friction handling course because who wouldn’t love linking power-

October 2017 | PANDO 35

induced oversteer in multiple corners? It was also cool to see how different the car handled each of these exercises as we gradually turned off the electronic safety nets. My personal GT4 is a third car so I don’t drive it in the rain (primarily based on horror stories I’ve read about the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2’s wet/cold weather behavior), and I quickly learned first-hand that their reputation isn’t totally undeserved. The balance of the GT4 is sublime and the dry weather traction is incredible but these Michelin tires are very unforgiving in the wet. We eventually moved to the handling circuit. Oscar was quick to point out that this was not meant to be a race track, per se, but more of a high speed, challenging road course. Oscar drove the first two laps. His first lap was deliberately slow as he pointed out passing zones, brake markers, apexes, etc. His second lap was “at speed” and while I could tell he wasn’t going full gusto, I’m not going to lie, I got a little nervous. I’m not a terrible driver, but it was AMAZING how much

36 PANDO | October 2017

faster a good driver is than an armchair hero like me. While I got a bunch of hot laps in and I was stoked that I definitely improved in several sections of the course, I am bummed that I never got one “clean” lap. It was however, EXTREMELY gratifying to pass two separate GT3’s and a new Turbo S. Granted that’s my ego talking since both cars should be able to peel the doors off my GT4 with equal drivers but still, I learned how my car behaves when really pushed, and I got a far better appreciation for the quality of the product. Lap after lap in 100 degree weather, and there was no brake-fade, no problems with oil pressure or coolant temp’s, the only thing getting fatigued was the driver. I had a brief re-cap session with Oscar where he helped walk me through the areas I improved and the areas that I still need to work on (I never look far enough down the road). I found it took nearly 30 minutes for the adrenaline of my experience to run its course through my body so I was very glad that I had reserved a table for lunch at 917.

The service at 917 was excellent, and while I would have loved to indulge in one of the adult beverages offered, I had a long drive back to Dana Point ahead of me, so I stuck to iced tea with my Kobe burger. There were some nice touches to the meal, like butter pats shaped like 911’s, and both our meals (my Dad had salmon) were perfectly prepared and well presented. All in all, a nice meal with my old man was a really pleasant way to finish our Porsche Experience.

For the Love of Porsche Story by James Lee

Track Tour at the Festival of Speed at the California Speedway on April 23, 2017.

I can’t remember exactly when I started loving cars, but it was at a very young age of Matchbox and Hot Wheels in grade school. My favorite toy car was a black Porsche 928 “bump and go.” It ran on batteries and had a set of castors in the underbody that redirected the car whenever it hit a wall. I do remember how I loved the way the 928 looked and the big, bold “PORSCHE” written clearly in the back and on the windows. I think I spent more time looking and admiring the car rather than playing with it. The 928 design was unlike anything I have seen on the road in the early 80’s. In 1986, one of my uncles purchased a second-hand orange 1976 911 coupe. Although the 911 shared no design similarities with the 928, I personally thought the 911 was even more beautiful than the 928 with the unique fastback design that made the 911 such an icon. I recall my uncle boasting about the high maintenance costs, how fast the car was, and how driving the car connected him to 38 PANDO | October 2017

the road. He made it sound as if the high cost of ownership and maintenance was a rite of passage with his 911. Although I don’t remember ever riding in his car, I do remember my uncle letting me sit in the black leather interior, and I was in awe with all the gauges and switches that I’d never seen before in a regular car. It wasn’t until the early 1990’s in high school when the movie “No Man’s Land” starring Charlie Sheen was on cable TV that my fascination with the Porsche 911 became an obsession. My favorite part of the movie was the chase scene with the silver 930 Turbo. The way the 930 sped away, the shot of the big wide wheels and fenders, and the Turbo whale tail delighted all of my senses. The car was stunning and beautiful! That scene alone cemented the 911 as my favorite car of all time, beating out Lamborghinis and Ferraris of the day.

Owning a Porsche however, was just a pipe dream for me growing up in Los Angeles. Being raised by our grandparents, our family struggled financially and owning a car, any car, was a luxury. After graduating college, meeting my wife, raising two kids, owning a home, working for a great company, owning a successful business, and saving enough money, it was time for me to pursue my dream 911. In the late summer of 2016, I began shopping for a low-mileage 997.2 C2 base coupe with a 6 speed manual for under $50K as a weekend driver. With people holding on to 997.2 manuals, the search had been difficult based on all of my criteria. On February 11, 2017, I went to see a Ruby Red 2009 Carrera Base at a small exotic car dealer in Laguna Beach. While the price was right, mileage was low, and the car drove wonderfully, I wasn’t personally too thrilled with the exterior color. Before I walked out, the dealer showed me an immaculate, gorgeously retro-inspired 2009 Cream

My love of Porsche started at a young age.

White Carrera S! It had only 19K miles, sand beige leather interior, and with a 6-speed manual gearbox. It was fully loaded with vented and heated seats as well as the Sport Chrono Package. He opened the door and I was pleasantly greeted with the illuminated door panel that read “Carrera S” in a mesmerizing cool white hue. This small detail quickly became one of my favorite features of the car. He handed me the keys for a test drive. After punching it on second gear on the glorious 3.8 liter flat six up the 133 Hwy, I knew this car was “the one”. It was $9K over my budget, but boy was it worth it! As of this writing, this 911 is by far the best car I have ever owned!

My first Porsche, a 2009 Carrera S.

A 6-speed manual gearbox was a must for me. I have been driving manuals since I was 16.

The illuminated entry is one of my favorite features.

Early Love Affair with Porsches Story and Photos by Woody Dike

I

became enamored with the Porsche automobile while working on a world history project paper in high school in 1958. An early article gave inspirational accounts of the rear engine layout and superior handling, and even a hand-drawn skeletal cutaway. After my own replication of the cutaway at a larger scale, I was fully into the components and sexy shape of this machine. Five years later, while in college at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in Architecture, I was fortunate to obtain a ride from a family friend who was an architect in his ‘59 silver roadster up Highway 1 to Big Sur to see a home he’d designed that was on a bluff overlooking a lake and black swans. As I was 20 years old, I wasn’t impressed - but the Porsche with the top down roaring under the redwoods - really did me in! Prior to the fall quarter and returning home to Claremont, I happened to look in the local rag (“The Courier”) in the ads and what was at the top of the list? …’59 Porsche Coupe…$2500! 40 PANDO | October 2017

My mind was ablaze as I had $2200 which I’d saved from several summer jobs. I called the number and yes, the car was still for sale. It was located in the garage of a local doctor some four blocks from my parent’s home. I walked over to the address and met the older gentleman. He told me his son played the commodities markets, had gone to Europe on some large winnings, and now had losses and needed to sell the car to return home. Walking to the rear of the property he opened a single car garage and there was a dusty, but beautiful Reutter black coupe with red interior. The man’s son was a skier, and the car had some chain chipping

around the wheel wells and one rear fender damage, but the interior was clean. Next day I called my best friend who was a car fanatic to come look, and I checked into insurance. We drove the car and it was a little bomb! We looked it over carefully and determined it needed tires, body and paint work. I offered the Doctor $2200. He said he would wire his son. That evening I received a call from the doctor that I had a deal!

RICE’S

Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice

Looking for an electrical supply company in Germany, I ran across this. A pristine 906 you may think? A new vintage racer? Fanatic collector auction hound? Nope. Guess again. See the neat engine. PS This is Not a Mezger Motor Now coming back to our old Porsches to surprise us all. Any guesses out there? Come on you may respond??? OR this reported new thing? The world is a changing.

But this “new engine” 4.0L, 500 HP, N/A engine supposedly has some MEZGER in it ??

THE BEST FOR THE LAST as no need for new gadgets to inspire us:

Porsche Milestone: One-millionth 911 rolls off the production line

heart of the Porsche brand: The 911. In Zuffenhausen today, the one-millionth model rolled off the production line. “This car is useless” YES , Dr. Ing. Helmut Bott did say this. However, that was what got him, and a lot of others started on the 901’s first of “zillions” of upgrades, and that has gone on for what? 53 years, and is going on, tomorrow. “It is turning out rather well, don’t you think?” - L. F. Rice G-Series Electrical Upgrades

AS I have promised, I have finished my first electrical UpGrades for the G-series 911/930. Now I can report what I think is the simplest and safest UpGrade one can do for a 911/930.

It is the archetypal sports car for everyday driving, and a style icon that is unmistakable as both the face and

1st of all, the reason I did this is because the inability of the small ATG German (1940s-ish) fuses and their screw terminal connection to handle the high electrical loads of the 1970s and ‘80s. There was simply more stress on the electrical

system than the old fuses and round relays, can safely handle. For those purists who dearly must keep everything original, 1st: Good luck and I strongly suggest you, or your service tech carefully inspect all your fuses, screw terminals, spring mount clips, and wire connections. Fuses: They all should look bright red, blue, yellow or white. Not faded from heat and age. The Bosch ® ATS ceramic - metal fuse contacts need to be bright and clean to pass enough amperage (electrical power) through to the screw terminal. With high loads from power seats, power windows, air conditioning, and fuel pumps, this overloads an old design and weak fuse system. Old, worn, tired fuses and their screw terminals and wires get warm, hot, and can fry!! 2nd FUSE PANEL(S): The original fuse panels for the 1965-68, ‘69-‘73 and 1974-1989 911/930 uses a combination October 2017 | PANDO 45

Fig 7. Make up for 21 gang fuse package with added on “connection rail” brass bus S-5 to S-6 S-7 to S-8 and S-9 to S20

Fig 8. Underside of fuse panels and factory popriveted bus strips

Fig 9. Factory ferrules on 6.0cm2 wire

of fuses. We are dealing now with the 1974-’89 system consisting of a 3-Gang, an 8-Gang, and a 10-Gang fuse panels. This makes the forward 21 fuse panel system. 98% of the time they work very well.

If the brass contacts are dull, you can try cleaning with a fine emery cloth (that reddishbrown abrasive sanding cloth, [Hardware store]. It works great. Then wipe off residue with some WD-40 on a clean rag.

3rd: Problems: AGE. After 3-4 decades, the metal contacts lose spring tension against the fuse. The fuse contact being small, has a weak path for current to flow.

INSURE all fuse terminal SCREWS are tight, but first, unscrew the screws, one at a time, and pull out each wire and inspect each wire’s end. You need to do this one wire at a time? You should have nice clean brass terminal end (‘ferrule’) on each wire end.

So the spring terminals look dull? It is also likely they have some corrosion forming on the contacts from airborne moisture. Even slight corrosion reduces voltage flow and anything restricting voltage FLOW makes HEAT! Heat makes everything worse, sometimes in a hurry. PS the upside down brass “U” shaped things are ‘bus strips.’ I install them to show me where the factory bus strips are, UNDERNEATH THE Fuse panel! FIX: Remove each of the fuses and look at them for over-heating, ones that look like dried up worms on the driveway, after a rain shower, junk them. Replace with new fuses, why not just replace all of them? Trash the old ones and also get a few spares. Next, look at the bottom fuse terminal’s spring contact. They all should have a good strong spring force to hold the fuse tightly against the brass screw terminals. THIS IS A MUST!

46 PANDO | October 2017

You do not want to see greenish colored wire ends or loose, frayed, or splintered wire ends. If so, then you need to cut off the bad part and bare about ¼” of fresh clean wire. Then you install the wire end into a correct sized ferrule, a snug fitting metal tube. That fits snugly over the clean, bare wire ends. Then crimp it with a crimp tool. You can find these parts and tools at a quality electrical supply store. Ferrules are available in different sizes for different size wires. JK ELECTRONICS, 6410 Westminster Blvd., just east of the 405.1-714/890-4001, is a great place to find everything for these repairs and modifications. This is a must for a correctly serviced electrical system. It just takes time, but the results are well worth it. PS Solder wire ends keep the wire from splintering, but the solder has no elasticity and the o.e.m. crimped brass ‘ferrules’ have no resilience to hold tension against the screw in the fuse terminal, and that helps keep it tight. Loose wires make heat!

Fig 11. Progression of UpGrades

Fig 12. ATO ‘BLADE”

So these steps above, for most standard 1965- 1989 911s, should keep the fuse system working fine. The later generation of 911SCs, 3.2 Carreras, and 930 Turbo electrical fuse and relays have even more stress on them. They became over loaded with additional electrical accessories over the years. So among many possible fixes and upgrades I have seen, most of them I have been reluctant to use as they had inherited carry-over problems. I have had inquiries about replacing the ceramic German ATS fuses with blade ATO fuses only. “Autogear.com” fuse part is great, but they keep the screw terminals for the wire ends which are on later 911s/930s over-stuffed into the terminal ends. The first upgrades involve replacing the o.e.m. ceramic ATS fuse with a ‘blade’ ATO jumper fuse kit. See fig 9. This is a rubber covered ATO fuse terminal, with cover, ATO fuse, and two red wires at each end. Fig 11 Shows a rough sketch of the original wiring of Porsches battery to fuse, to relay, and on to fuel pumps. Below are rough progression of UpGradesGrades. NOTE: Since the 964, 993 Porsche runs on battery power (30) directly to the relay “30” terminal, then on to its fuse past the relay.* RELAYS: These fuse UpGrades do nothing for the weaker round relays we have now-a-days. The next step is to replace the round relays on the highest load systems: The Fuel Pumps.

Fig 14. MINI relays for Fuel Pump Nr. I & II

” ATO FUSE Jumper fuse kit

Fig 17. BLUE SEA sketch

The ‘round relays’ were originally made by WEHRLE of Germany and worked perfectly for a long, long, time. Now we seem to get only the new ‘world market’ supplied from China relays. (SAD)

Fig 18. A Blue Sea 6-Gang ATO Fuse Panel. For Fuel Pump I & II, Oil Cooler Fan, A/C, and power windows.

Looking for a replacement kit panel, I chose a BLUE SEA marine supplier for

I next replaced the round relays for the Fuel Pump Nr. I and Nr. II. I used new “MINI” RELAYS from TYCO/ AMP. Part number #VF4-5-with metal brackets. These are the same SAE and DIN specification 4 or 5 blade 12 volt 40/30 amp relay as the factory WEHRLE Relays (Porsche Nr. 141-951-253-B). The VF4-5 relay has a mounting boss on the side of the relay for the metal mounting bracket. I used the metal bracket, only I reversed the bracket around to have the bracket in the inside of the fuse/relay panel, and the relay on the outside. The relay’s PLUG CONNECTORS are on the inside of the fuse panel bracket. This enables the relay to easily slide off the metal bracket and out for troubleshooting /replacement, if that is ever needed, and it all fits under the panel cover. With two separate ATO fuses and two separate Mini Relays, the overheating problems were solved. It was not as tidy as I wanted, but it is 100% functional and safe. Next in the pursuit to make it even better, I sourced an ATO 6-Gang fuse panel to replace the high amperage load original ATS fuse panels. I needed to make the new ATO fuse panel fit within the other existing ATS fuse panels and also fit under the plastic electrical panel cover.

their 6-Gang ATO FUSE PANEL.This ATO 6 individual fuse circuit kit also supplies; several bus strips, to combine input or output buses, a clear plastic cover, and spare screws. Blue Sea uses 8/32” x 3/16” stainless Phillips screws and terminals, and requires wires with round ring terminals. Now there won’t be any more stuffing wires into those small holes as in the old screw terminals, and hoping they all stay in there. Blue Sea is aviation grade quality and that is primarily why I chose their ATO fuse panel for a typical upgraded 911 and now a 930 Turbo. As BLUE SEA uses all stainless hardware for ocean use, I did not want a non-magnetic screw to accidentally fall into any terminals or wiring when working on it under power like troubleshooting a live power problem. So, I replaced their screws with steel 8/32” x 3/8”, (slightly longer) steel Phillips screws each with its own crimped on star washers. These work perfectly. For the typical 911 930, I use the Blue Sea only on highest amperage systems;

the S-18, S-19, S-20, and S-21 terminals. However, to make everything fit and have 21 fuses as original, I had to cut down the Blue Sea’s terminal mounting ends (hack saw, works fine) and mount it to the steel panel with two small holes drilled through the Blue Sea Panel and install with small M5 screws, washers, and lock nuts, behind the panel. The PANEL COVER for the Fuse/Relays, I wanted to use the original panel cover, but it left no extra room, it was just a bit too tight of a fit. I bought a black plastic “project box” (3” x 5”) from Amazon and cut 3/8” from the bottom up off, and placed it on the rear most part of the cover, and cut a matching hole out. Then I super glued and silicone sealed the box part into the cut out part of the panel cover. White paint made reading the fuse identifications much easier (think of night time, rain and weak flashlight). Also any overheating is readily evident. This Upgrade insures a neat, simple, and safer, longer use of your Porsche. Further details are available upon request. And next month the FINAL, THE ENGINE PANEL UpGrade. To Greg and the BOD Just a shout out to our Board today, all you guys are unbelievable and have the general membership’s thanks of appreciation for all you do. Your inclusion of those of us with differing views was very thoughtful and we can’t thank you enough. We also love our Porsche’s above all, and also realize the good hearted intentions of all club members. I know I can be passionate, but, thank you again, we humbly accept the board’s decision, understand it, and look very forward to the next OCR function.

Looking forward to the trip to Idyllwild with C.L, and the group in September and the Central Coast Spring drive next March!!

Dale, I sincerely appreciate message of appreciation to the Board and their intentions.

Gary Scott

Next time you see a board member, simply say, “Thanks for your time and effort.”. Let’s make a thankless job one of appreciation and support. I was shocked to hear today that only about 10% of members even vote during the board elections. Let’s all get involved and make it a greater club.

What’s In Your Garage? My Porsche Affair

Story and Photos by John Sagud

It started early. As a child, the very first photos of me, show me with at least one car in my hand. My dad told me at the age of 2 ½, I could identify any car by name, just by its taillights. The fascination was somehow in my genes, pre-wired. There was no escaping the genetic thing. Whatever the case, I’m a car guy – actually a car nut. Not so much the “greasy finger nails” type, and not in the sense that I could spend a week in a garage with a wrench. My mechanical knowledge is weak, and frankly, I have the mechanical prowess of a chimpanzee. All thumbs and fingers made for a piano, not wrenches and tight spaces. It’s a big regret. I’d like to be that guy under the hood in the garage, but it’s not my forte. I like to run my hand down the fenders; I like the feel of the steering wheel, the smell of the leather, gas and oil. So, to the mechanic and wrench expert, I’m a poser; but to all who know me, I’m in love with the automobile. Don’t get me wrong, I like girls more, but cars are a close second. My first encounter with the car, a Porsche, was when I turned 40. Yup, textbook mid-life crisis. After 20 years with my childhood sweetheart (we met in our teens, married in our 20’s) I suggested a couple options to her: Girlfriend or Porsche. She offered option three, a bullet between the eyes! After much crying, begging and emotional tugging at her heart, she acquiesced. Option two it was! So, in ’93, I purchased an ’88 Cab. When we dated in the early 70’s, she drove a ’72 914. You see, this is a girl with a soul. I might mention here, she is also a Saint. I drove that ’88 Cab for seven years, piling 3 teenage boys (2 of which were mine) and all their baseball gear into that car which was our school taxi on a daily basis. I loved that car but, in 2000, finances caused me to sacrifice it “to the cause.”

own business, when there it was! A dead ringer of my ’96. Now my ’96 was a Polar Silver and this was Arctic Silver, but who’s going to argue? It was a’95. It had 63K on the odometer. It was a one owner! A Zuffenhausen European delivery. All the records and immaculate. Clearly, God wants me to have this car. Why else would I have been driving past it on this very day?! Finances are no better in 2015 than at any other time in my life, but now I get down on my hands and knees. This is the one; this will return the sparkle to my eyes. I will give up all vices and become the best, most loving husband in the world. Now, by this time, my bride, the Saint, and I have been together well over 40 years. There are no surprises; she knows me better than I know me. Can we afford a Porsche? No way. Can we even afford another car payment? No way. Can I get it, honey? The love of my life said, “yes”. You see, she is the hero here. And, secretly, between you and me, Porsche runs through her veins too. Our last name is Sagud. It’s pronounced “Say good” (should have spelled it that way a long time ago!) But on my plates, I use the “gud” in the context of “good”. So when you see a ’95 Arctic Silver 993 cruising the Coast Highway with the plate 993 4GUD, you know that this time it really means, “FOR GOOD” and I’ll never let this one go!

You see, I am not a wealthy man. Don’t know what 6 figures even look like. But I love cars, and that’s that. Seller’s remorse and daily groveling led to Porsche #2. In 2001, I worked as a customer service rep at a friend’s BMW dealership in Norwalk. Next to the BMW store was a Porsche store, and it was only a matter of time. There it was, on the back lot, a trade in. A ’96 993. 14K miles with plastic still on the passenger seat! Clearly, this was a sign from God. The Saint rolled her eyes and said yes. It was a Tip, not my first choice, but the manual in the ’88 gave my bride more work than she wanted, so the Tip might just be the feature that “tipped” the scale. It worked, and I became the proud owner of the last of the air breathers. I was in car heaven! I had it 4 years, and, once again, debt reared its ugly head and I had to let her go. How amazing it must be to be wealthy enough to actually afford having a third car. So, back to the mundane. I trudged, driving sedans and SUVs and basically hating life. That was, until two years ago. There I was, driving down the Coast Highway in Newport (yes, it sucks to live where everyone can afford my dream cars), minding my
