Any resemblance to the car of your dreams is purely intentional. It wears its heritage proudly on its sleeves. And fenders. And roofline. Experience the Porsche Macan S. A 340-horsepower twin-turbo V6, PDK double-clutch transmission and active all-wheel drive with Porsche Traction Management for maximum grip in varying driving conditions. All standard. The Macan S is built around our defining belief that every drive should be unforgettable. And every car should be a sports car. Dream fulfillment begins with a test drive. Porsche. There is no substitute.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Barry Michaels
WHAT DID YOU DO
ON YOUR SUMMER VACATION?
H
ow many times at the beginning of the elementary school year did the teacher ask you to write a short essay on the subject? The topic comes to my mind now, as I write this month’s message (in August), because kids are heading back to school and we are heading into the season of pumpkin spice lattes. For me, summer came and went so quickly I feel as though I must have missed something. I hope you didn’t, and ask that you share with your fellow members, on the pages of PANDO, those Porsche-related adventures you enjoyed over the past season. PANDO is an affirmation of who we are as a club, and the things that bring us together. Let us know what you most enjoyed; this is your magazine and its relevance depends on your active participation. Share your perspective on the Big Willow DE event, the AX events at any of the venues, Concours, tours, gimmick rallies, Werkes Reunion, Rennsport Reunion VI, Treffen Banff, social events, or ??? Your contributions, coupled with the efforts of our volunteer photographers, proof readers, art direction, and editor, have reflected shared values of excellence which have been recognized nationally across PCA. Congratulations to all involved in the content and production of PANDO, and thank you in advance for your future contributions.
Do you own a four-door Porsche? If you don’t, you’re behind the four-door wave that is sweeping across the USA. In June, 2018, 73% of all Porsche new car sales were four-door models. Panamera and 911 models were sold in equal numbers, whereas Cayenne and Macan sales were 58% of all units sold. If you do own a four-door model, let us know how we can better serve your interests. Recent constructive feedback from a few SUV owners indicated they felt a little like poor step-children. Most of the miles I drive in a Porsche are SUV miles, so I recognize the merit of the four-door models and can guarantee the OCR Board values all members, regardless of the Porsche model owned. That said, our goal is to develop a breadth of activities and events that include all Porsche owners. I encourage your active participation in identifying and developing relevant activities. In the interim, enjoy the drive.
Barry Michaels
President, PCA-OCR
People. Porsches. Passion.
On the topic of volunteering, Norm Follis has stepped up and volunteered to serve as our Concours Chair, replacing Mark Wallace who has served as our Concours leader over the last two years. Please join me in thanking Mark for his service and contributions, and wishing Norm well in his efforts toward organizing a successful 2019 White Glove Concours.

Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington
CARS & CURVES,
A TRIBUTE TO 70 YEARS OF PORSCHE
by Stephan Bogner and Ben Winter, published June 2018 by Delius Klassing Verlag, Germany Philosophers can argue themselves blue in the face over when “PORSCHE” began. Was it the first concept for a car, the establishment of Porsche GmbH, the first complete drawings, the first prototype car, the first production car, the production of the 10th car, the 100th.... Perennial author of books about Porsche, Larry Leffingwell, arguably jumped the gun with his “PORSCHE - 70 YEARS,” published in September, 2017. This book coincides more closely to the ‘popular’ concept of the 70th anniversary of Porsche, but has much less relationship to the history of Porsche AG and its cars. CARS & CURVES is a ‘tribute,’ not a history, not a review, not a technical report. (Lest there be any confusion, the curves” in the title are the “Road & Track” kind, not the “Playboy” kind, and this book has no relationship to the ‘Adult Coloring Book’ with the same title.) The book under review is basically a book of pictures, showing various models of Porsches on curvy roads. There is no table of contents, no index, and there is as much emphasis on the scenery as on the cars. Most locations are in Europe (including England, Scotland and Iceland), and the matte paper adds an ‘arty’ quality to the often doublepage spreads. Each of some 26 ‘chapters’ begins with a one-page description of the ‘event’ shown in the subsequent pictures, with only a little technical information about the cars themselves. Some chapters deal with a single car; most show multiple cars, sometimes an early model with a later model. Some locations are repeated with different cars, and at least one car, a Carrera 6 shows up in separate locations.
This is a very impressive book to have on your coffee table and is bound to promote conversation, either about the cars or the scenery. The oldest car shown is a Type 64 Berlin-Rome racer from 1939. The newest included is the 2019 Mission E coupe. There are Street Legal race cars – a 904 and a Carrera 6. Panameras, Cayennes and Caymans are included as well as 356s and 914s. Despite the heritage, no African venue is included, and there are no front-engine ‘water pumpers’ appear on these pages. Nit-pickers can complain that the chapter on “911Carrera S Cabrio,” containing pictures of a drive from LA to San Francisco, shows a picture of Roy’s Motel/Cafe in Amboy without showing the logo on the pavement or even mentioning Route 66 in the caption. Another glitch is that the chapter on driving up the Grimselpass in Switzerland shows impressive scenery (in dreary weather), and lists the featured Speedster as being a ‘54, but shows it having teardrop tail lights and a ‘shine-up’ license plate light. Produced as a book of pictures of Porsches
(and landscapes) not a technical reference, these problems are immaterial to the value of the book. At the risk of being obscure, let me say that this is a great book for the Porsche enthusiast, but not particularly valuable to the Porsche aficionado. A ‘coffee table book’ to introduce and inspire the neophyte Porsche fan, not to educate the Porschephile. CARS & CURVES is hard bound and contains 432, 8.5x11 inch matte pages. As this is written it is available for $45.54 from Amazon books.

New Member Picnic September 8, 2018 Story by Sherri Graybehl and Photos by Gary Labb
What a great turnout for the New Member Picnic
on Saturday, thank you all for attending. A total of 130 club members attended to enjoy the food, meet new friends, and support the club. There was a raffle during the event for a LoJack and Penny Hinds won. Congratulations Penny! Apparently, the five homemade cakes were a hit because there wasn’t a crumb left. There was a great group of volunteers who helped with both set up and clean up for the picnic. Thank you all very much.

Receiving Lion’s Award from Hurley Haywood Brumos Racing
I
love the challenge, keen competition and camaraderie of national Concours d’ Elegance events starting with the many Porsche Parades that we have successfully participated in over the last 20 years. Within the United States, there are 3 internationally known world class Concours d’ Elegance events. The Amelia Island Concours held in March on Amelia Island, in Northern Florida. Pebble Beach Concours
held in August in Monterey. And, the Concours of America at St. John’s (formerly known as The Meadowbrook) held in late July in Plymouth Michigan, just outside of Detroit. The Concours of America at St John’s is now in its 40th continuous year of operation rivaling Pebble Beach Concours for longevity. At the 2013 Traverse City, Michigan Porsche Parade, we were invited by the Concours of America organizer, Brian Joseph, to

show our Peter Gregg’s 1977 Brumos Porsche 934.5 Trans Am Championship winner at their upcoming event. The Brumos 934.5 was entered in the Early 911 Class 1964-1978 celebrating 50 years of the 911. We won the Lions Award and finished 2nd in class. Our second invitation to the 2018 40th Annual Concours of America St John came from Brian Joseph at the 2017 Amelia Island Concours where he had just won Best of Show with a restored Duesenberg, which is his business in Troy Michigan. The invitation came right after we won Best of Class Brumos Racing cars at the same Amelia Concours. Brian was building a “Porsche Race Car class” to celebrate the 70th year of Porsche AG for his 2018 Concours of America. David, my nephew and I accepted. But we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. The Brumos Porsche 934.5 was honored to be the chosen Porsche race car featured at the Saturday morning July 28 Porsche Drivers seminar in the Grand Ballroom of the Inn at St John. Hurley Haywood, Brian Redman and Vic Elford told stories for 2 hours of their racing successes that captivated the audience. However, Brian Joseph had outdone himself for the Sunday Concours. The Porsche Race Car class was the most ferocious 16 PANDO | October 2018
competition I have ever been up against. Seventeen (17) beautifully restored and significant Porsche Race cars met us on the Concours field this past Sunday, July 29th. The pictures in this article tell the story. Porsche Race cars from Ron Thomas/Aase Sales Collection, Miles Collier Collection, Naples Florida, Brumos Collection, Jacksonville Florida, Chris MacAllister’s 917K, Penske Restoration Services, Porsche AG Museum and Porsche Cars North America were assembled. Wayne Carini, “Chasing Classic Cars” fame, was the head judge for the class. Thinking we didn’t have a chance at all in this class, David and I watched as the red ribbon was mistakenly placed on another car, and then the judges placed it correctly on the Brumos Porsche 934.5. Another Lions Award for the car!!! Two out of two attempts. Not a class win, but certainly satisfying based on the competition. Hoping for a class win, but that was reserved for the Collier Collection 1971 908/3 Tara Florio winner museum car driven by Brian Redman. A special thank you goes out to Dano Davis, Don Leatherwood and the Brumos Collection who showed great camaraderie in helping us place the sister Brumos car on the field. We will be back to Plymouth, Michigan again, for sure!

#gemsroadtrip
Every year we go to my family farm in Michigan for the 4th of July family reunion. We usually fly, but over the years we have also driven in a Suburban, RV, or our FJ Cruiser. This year we decided to take the Cayman R, aka “Gem.” Our first destination was Middleton, Idaho to see Jon and Denise Rhodes who relocated from Huntington Beach. They are former OCR members who introduced us to the club. We had a great visit with them, experiencing rural life with goats and chickens and hit some nice spots in Boise. Along the way to Michigan we made a point to stop in small towns for lunch and see the area. There was no fast food eaten on this trip! (other than McDonalds for coffee). Notable stops on the way: Shoshone Falls, Classic Car Museum, Kearney, Nebraska German Colonial Villages, Amana Iowa Mackinac Island, Michigan The Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota Martin’s Cove, in Wyoming near Rattlesnake pass on the Oregon Trail Rock Springs, Wyoming, home of 56 Nationalities Best dinner: Martin Hotel in Winnemucca Nevada. This was a Basque restaurant where we were seated with a Nevada cattle rancher, his son and a retired businessman from Bakersfield now living in Boise, and his daughter from San Francisco. Interesting conversation and amazing food served family style.
Scariest moment: Driving through South Dakota, phones alerted to security motion detectors going off at our house. Checked in to see Monica and Denny Asbury peeking in our windows at our house in Corralitos! Local foods: Pasties, Escanaba, MI Perch and Whitefish from Lake Michigan, St. Ignace, MI Cheese curds and beef sticks, Wisconsin Best Roads: Highway 2 in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Highway 95 from Winnemucca to Idaho; Highway 287 in Wyoming Number of times used windshield wipers: Two, one light rain in Utah, and once for a farmer’s irrigation that was watering the road in Wisconsin Most miles in a day: 756 from Gillette, Wyoming to Elko Nevada Number of gas station visits: 19 Most expensive gas: Dixon, CA $3.89 Least expensive gas: Harrison, MN $3.18 Number of state lines crossed: 17 Porsches sighted: 7 (not counting CA or the Porsche dealership in Reno), About that Porsche dealership, on our last day of the trip, about 90 miles outside of Reno, we blew a tire. AAA plus to the rescue. We were towed 96 miles to the Porsche dealer where the service manager fit us in that afternoon for a set of new tires. 1984
Really, it all began back in Australia in 1990; but actually, my love of Porsche cars started even earlier when I watched the first ‘Bad Boys’ movie. Toward the end of the movie, there was an amazing car chase featuring an older 911 Turbo and I remember thinking, “what a cool car - I want one of those!” My first Porsche purchase was a 1984 911, six years old and at a cost of some $84,000 Australian dollars. At the time there were only 600 Porsches in Australia, and it was a real head turner, even with those red rims! Soon after, my wife and I joined the ‘exclusive’ Porsche Club and were having lots of fun until somebody stole the car from my garage on New Year’s Day! Unfortunately, we found it some nine months later, all stripped. A friend of mine bought the body shell and completely rebuilt the car. To this day, he still races it in Australia. Once I received the insurance payout for my stolen car, I replaced it with a 1986 911, also Guards Red. I remember at the time, my mechanic saying to me the engine on this car was perfect! I sold this 911 when I moved to the US. My yearning for another Porsche continued and when I stumbled onto the 996. I was again hooked, and had several

more Porsches including a 2007 Turbo which was my 50th birthday present to ME! I had four years of driving enjoyment in the Turbo and sold it with 57,000 miles on the clock. During a moment of poor judgement, I replaced the Turbo with a Mercedes C63 AMG, but that vehicle remained in my garage for less than year. I soon realized my error and headed back to the Porsche dealership! I have also owned a couple of Boxster’s, but honestly, it’s the 911 for me! My most recent 911, the 991.2 2017, is a fabulous car both on and off the track, the torque, the rear axle steering, the new turbo engine, what a machine! I say to all my friends that I can’t believe how Porsche just keeps improving their vehicles, the 911 is just outstanding. I can’t help but smile every time I drive mine, and I drive it a lot! Hopefully, I will always be fortunate enough to drive a Porsche, and being part of the Porsche Club and Autocross just adds to the fun. Oh, and by the way, my wife has the new 718, she feels the same LOL!

Cone Zone Update Cone Zone Grand Reopening by Rob Greene
The OCR Porsche Alley CONE ZONE emerged from hiatus with a patriotic fanfare at the Club’s July 7th Breakfast Meeting by featuring RED WHITE & BLUE Porsches. Although this restart marks the fourth annual series of monthly cone zone adventures, those of you Porsche fanatics who have joined PCA’s Orange Coast Region in the past few months may be wondering, “Where is Porsche Alley and what is an OCR Cone Zone?” A little over three years ago, with a slightly twisted PCA slogan, “It’s the cars with the people,” we began a new feature at our monthly breakfast meetings: One row of parking stalls (hence, the “Alley”) at Original Mike’s was coned off with slightly-used orange traffic cones donated by PCA-OCR’s Autocross (thanks!). Parking in this zone of cones is reserved for a designated class of Porsche or driver that varies from month-to-month. Our first series highlighted different models of Porsche, our second series focused on color to determine which VIP (very important Porsche) would get Cone Zone
parking preference. The most recent series included color exercises, a model type, and different types of equipment on fabulous Porsches. In addition to the traditional RED WHITE and BLUE colors for last July, we featured fixed rear wings, various wheel sizes, all cabriolets, and even no-cones parking by color sorting (think Skittles, M&Ms, or gum drops in color groups!) Yes, we are a funloving bunch. The plan for the new monthly Cone Zone themes follows, and special thanks to members who provided some great ideas! • OCTOBER – Ladies day! If you are into autocross, concours, rallies, tours; or it’s your daily driver, weekend driver, or you just sit in the garage and stare at your lovely car, this cone’s for you.
• NOVEMBER – Autocross cars. Streetable or trailered. Class winners or just a number on the door. • DECEMBER – Holiday Red and Holiday Green Porsches (still your call on the color, but Lime Green? Really?) • JANUARY – No Porsche Alley Cone Zone--- Attend the PCA - OCR Annual Member Brunch! • FEBRUARY – Air-cooled engines. Park head-in and open those lids! • MARCH – Water-cooled engines. Park head-in and let’s see what you have!
I hope we all continue to have fun with the Cone Zone. Don’t forget to check the Pando for any schedule revisions and additions.

RICE’S
Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice
This article is being rerun and now includes significant information regrettably excluded from the earlier print date. Pando sincerely apologizes for this oversight.
Newspaper Clipping of original Larry’s Tech Tips
DRIVING “PUSHING” a Turbo 911-930 .... We lost an item from September’s Rambling, “Larry’s Tech Tips”. The following is copied from a printed item run in an unknown PCA-Regions’ newsletter, from an unknown author, and submitted by an unknown “Larry.” I found this an intimidating, rather caustic warning of almost mythical proportions. Was this just falling for some over blown bravado, or was there really something to it? So for those interested in the evergreen 930 :
The following was printed in a PCA newsletter, somewhere a long time ago.
Larry’s Tech TipS : “ What’s it like to drive a porsche turbo?” In a previous century, if you were an adventurous man who thought you were good with a Colt .45 you might have gone to Dodge City and challenged Wyatt Earp. If you’re feeling adventurous today, and think you’re good in the driver’s seat, you could try out a turbo-charged Porsche 930, 36 PANDO | October 2018
one of the early ones, a 1978 or so, produced before the Germans learned pity. More guys totaled their 930s on their first day of ownership than probably any other car ever built. Part of this has to do with the way the turbo boost kicks in, like recoil of a .44 Magnum. Another reason can be attributed
to when the boost kicks in usually at the worst time. Plain automotive cussedness you can count on. Brake late into a corner in a 930, so late you’re still trailing on the brakes as you begin turning, and the ass end will come out on you as you begin turning, and the
ass end will come out on you sure as God reviles sin. Get off the brakes and it’ll spin. Brake harder and it’ll spin. Is there a simple salvation?
to deal with. Now I had to start learning how to drive a 930, as it was meant to be driven. That last part, one can write a book about.
Push your foot down on the throttle, catch the drift and power through. As the boost wacks in, trim back on the throttle to about a constant rush. The front tires will go light, and you’ll drive nose first off to the outside. But try to save it by lifting and you snap spin for sure.
For me it turned out to be like learning to drive a 911 all over again. Soon I understood how it all worked together, and how I could adapt to some things and push my Turbo beyond what was said to be ‘the limits.’ Compared to anything else I ever drove, it became a genuine Paradigm Shift.
Remember, you’ve got about five nanoseconds to get the maneuver right. As soon as the rears grab, get the fronts turned into the corner. Now you’ve got it. Well, maybe you’ve got it. Besides, if you’re really good, a Porsche 930 will let you do it all over again. Anyone who says he doesn’t get all weak and misty eyed every time they see a Porsche 930 Turbo, is a liar. One drive and you understand why. Sixty m.p.h. comes in 4.7 seconds: Top speed is 170 m.p.h. The brakes will roll up your socks up, then down. Anyone who has ever handled a 911 Turbo at speed can, to this day, vividly recall their first time. The first moment they dipped into it, wound up the turbo, and launched into a wild supersonic fantasy. Pure nirvana, baby.”
Anonymous So the question was begging to be asked: IS the 930 Turbo really all that scary to drive? It seems to have all the power you could want and you could drive it around town with ease. In most cases it drives like a nice 911 SC only with a lot more instant torque that gets it moving. And some report it is so docile and drives so easily, with good manners, you could take grandma shopping with it. Is that actually true? Well, after driving them for a while, I can vouch for that one. And honestly say, Yes, I’ve done that! After I made the decision to build a turbo engine of my own, I had new learning curve
* For clarity, I am going to use the term: “POWER”, or “power pedal” to note using the “Gas” or “Throttle,” especially as with the 996 and later, a driver does NOT control the throttle opening at all! Those later computer cars have “E-Gas” meaning no matter what you push down on to the throttle, the computer regulates how much actual throttle opening is used. Got that? A 911 with the engine and transaxle weight in the rear, has a rear-end weight bias. Driving an early 930 (1975-1977), one learned to brake earlier than they normally would in other cars, then use light power in the beginning of a turn, and gradually keep adding power and power out of the turn. I am talking about using easy power, not slap down power as that will end up disastrously! You drive deliberately and EASILY into, through, and out, of turns. The mantra is: SMOOTHNESS. So we adapted to the early 930 with smooth easy power, steering, and braking, and easily eased the throttle down and smoothly drove out of turns. In my earlier Corvettes, you braked at the last minute, held low steady power through the turn, and once straightened out, you mashed the throttle down. I recall on the open club track days practicing against Corvettes, I expected to get blown into the weeds by Corvettes. Some did. But mostly I was amazed that my 911 responded so well to the early slowing (‘setting up’) then early on the power, but constantly increasing more throttle, timed to be at W.O.T. (Wide Open Throttle) as I exited
the turn, and I was pulling maximum torque with max HP soon after! It was a blast, and I was knee-shaking at first, everyone was, except the Corvettes. Most of them were in my mirrors. The later 3.3 Liter Turbos were almost much better. Almost because they pushed the engine further rearward to install a much heavier clutch with a rubber center clutch disc as to not make so much noise in neutral! And they put larger wheels and tires on the 1987 Turbos too, which helped handling immensely but it also gained weight! Overall, the bigger 3.3 engine was better but the weight was not better at all. Another thing is the rubber clutch with its heavy iron pressure plate made the engine rev slower and gave a feeling of a giant rubber band between the engine and the transmission. Whereas the 3.0 liter Turbo, you used the throttle like we did with a high performance 911S (1967-1971). In a power driven turn you could move the throttle a bit and instantly feel the chassis respond: A little too much power and the tail moved out a bit, ease off a hair on the throttle and the tail comes back in. An early 930 was very controllable to drive. The 3.3L had none of that feel at all, it was just mushy. I can honestly report that all those miles of 911 daily driving to LAX and back, in rain, fog, wind, dust storms and the usual things like being cut off in traffic, BRAKES, then hoping you don’t get hit in the rear. Then a bad one, on one early morning’s 0200 a.m. drive home, I was tired after a long late night’s overtime getting an airplane repaired. I’m on the 405 south, and out of nowhere I see a large dark limo stopped, dead across 3 lanes on the 405. INSTANTLY, I performed instinctive over steer-recovery, with power. Later trying to recall what happened as I drank scalding hot coffee around 0300 am, nursing off the shakes! Apparently, I had learned something that saved my life, again! That something came primarily from those PCA-POC-SCCA Driver Instructor’s yelling: “KEEP YOUR FOOT IN IT!” That became a mindset, and today it still is. October 2018 | PANDO 37
Whatever you drive, including a 911, it makes no difference. A 930 Turbo is almost the same except when that power is pushed down and held there, that turbocharger builds up enormous power so quickly, so wildly, you must be ready for it. Today’s turbocharged Carreras are well tamed by many sensors and silver boxes that take in everything from wheels starting to lose grip (before you could sense it), excessive yaw motion that was going into uncontrolled slide (before you could sense it), chassis squat from bumps that induce wheel spin, (before you could sense it) and make adjustment to keep your Carrera in it’s proper path, even if a bozo was still pushing the power down to the floor, mindless of what was going on. These computers are amazing things we have, and they work well. It took 40 years to get all that data compiled and programmed into sensors that do this. Porsche indeed deserves a bow. :) However, an early Turbo needed to be driven and learned. That means used on a regular basis in order to learn how to use it and control its responses. Then after getting a handle on that, how to use the boost power. Driving off on a straight line seemed simple enough but on boost, the cam starts making maximum power around 4,000 rpm, then boost comes pushing in around 4,300 rpm and at 5,000 it is raising the 930’s front end up, squatting the rear end down, and growling with an alarming ”WHOooossshing” blast from the waste gate and going like blazes! Are you ready for that? Few ever do this even on a straight road, let alone on windy roads like a driving school track. It is a bit intimidating. Road driving is easy enough until you try using boost through turns. Then it is very different. It takes time. Curves need to be thought out before even thinking about trying a turn on boost, any boost at all. Apex points are different, braking points are different, and Wide Open Throttle (power) points are different. It is much different than a naturally aspirated 911.
38 PANDO | October 2018
Fig.1. Using turbo boost power through a sweeper turn
Fig.1: It looks wild, and it is the first time or two. Then it is a matter of feeling how the car slides or holds, keeps stable, driving with careful steering position, and lightly pressing your right foot, easily, on-off the power. It does however wear tires out, but it holds steady on your intended course and YOU ARE IN CONTROL. It just takes time. One more thing: From our first time trial schooling, we were also taught to drive on the streets like we do at the track, ONLY WITHOUT THE SPEED. You use the same kind of anticipation, the same vision scan, the same easing on and off the brakes, the same squeezing on the power and off again. Always look and focusing on the cars ahead of you, especially when cruising lazily in 5th. Remember the BIG 3: TRAFFIC, MIRRORS, SPEED (instruments), and always scan them.
NEXT MONTH: Tuning a 930 Turbo for more driver control, in next month’s Ramblings. One last time, For those once a month puttputt 930 drivers, I can only say just stay off the boost and enjoy the ease with which your machine cruises and it’s nice manners, great looks, great sounds, and safety. Enjoy your cruising and ignore the street racers. Godspeed
