Any resemblance to the car of your dreams is purely intentional. It wears its heritage proudly on its sleeves. And fenders. And roofline. Experience the Porsche Macan S. A 340-horsepower twin-turbo V6, PDK double-clutch transmission and active all-wheel drive with Porsche Traction Management for maximum grip in varying driving conditions. All standard. The Macan S is built around our defining belief that every drive should be unforgettable. And every car should be a sports car. Dream fulfillment begins with a test drive. Porsche. There is no substitute.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Barry Michaels

Marcia Salans Barry Michaels

A Duty of Service. It’s OCR election time once again, with member voting in November for the President, Vice President, and Treasurer positions. I encourage all qualified members interested in serving in one of the roles to immediately contact one of our Nominating Committee Members, Crag Simonin, Carolyn Follis, or CL Jarusek. In 2020 I will transition from my current role as President to serving on the OCR Executive Council as Immediate Past President. While serving on our Board does take time and effort, I’m confident new or returning officers will benefit from their interactions with other regions, Zone 8 staff, and the network of PCA National Chairs and Officers. We are a volunteer driven organization, and the success of our programs and activities depend on the time and contributions of many. OCR leadership, whether as a member of the Board or a committee chair, is a duty of service versus one of special privilege, but it pays off in increased enjoyment of club activities.

to drive and socialize with your fellow members. In addition to our regular monthly events our Hearts & Garages Tour (progressive dinner coupled with giving opportunity with our designated charity, Semper Fi) will be held on October 12th. This is one of the favorite events each year for many club members. CL Jarusek will lead a tour (including lunch) to Idyllwild on October 20th, and we will support the Riverside Region led autocross at Fontana October 21st. If you like driving fast, OCR is hosting a DE event at Streets of Willow on October 23rd, utilizing professional instructor/coaches from the Craig Stanton Performance Driving School.

Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington

PORSCHE Gli anni d’oro - The Golden Years

by Leonardo Acerbi, published: January 29, 2019, by Giorgio Nada Editore Srl, Milan, Italy.

This book provides text in both English and Italian. The pictures are, of course, a ‘universal language,’ in which this book is well spoken. Missing from the sub-title are the words “of Racing.” There is very little in this book about production capability and output, design efforts, or corporate organization. To paraphrase – it’s not the business, it’s the [racing] cars. It must also be said that the ‘Golden Years’ seem to be the air-cooled/Ferry era at Porsche, but the six chapters (of eight) within that time period, provide an extensive report of Porsche racing history. The first chapter covers background material from the years 1875 through 1930, including a fairly intensive treatment of the Porsche family, with many pictures new to this reviewer. The 1928-1949 chapter provides a more extensive treatment of Dr. Porsche’s WWII projects than most books do about Porsches, stating that “Ferdinand [Porsche] and his staff also inevitably became “official suppliers of tanks” to the Third Reich. Also clearly indicated is that Jean-Pierre Peugeot personally instigated Dr. Porsche’s imprisonment in France, after British tribunals had acquitted him of any complicity in the war. PORSCHE Gli anni d’oro is a big book, an inch and a quarter thick, weighing in at just under six pounds - it really needs a coffee table to support it. If you remove the dust jacket for preservation (or framing,) you are left with a very plain, very black book. Inside, despite ‘European style’ runon paragraphs and a few phrases awkward

from translation, this book is an easier read than it looks - the English text is only half of the book. Each chapter begins with pages of dense text, followed by page after page of pictures with blocks of captions printed in skinny, italic type, much harder to read than the main text. Each page displays the chapter-era years in the upper corner, so one can open a page at random and know where one is chronologically. Through the end of the ‘60s, the pictures are mostly black and white. This book’s overall focus on race cars and associated people, mostly at race tracks, is a refreshing change from the more narrowly focused ‘911 books’ that are so prevalent today. The different focus and somewhat different flavor in the collection of pictures provided, may or may not reflect the Italian origins of this book, but it somehow seems refreshing. This is a book unique in formatting/layout, with uniquely comprehensive textual summary of Porsche racing up through 1998. It also contains an outstanding collection of pictures, many

not commonly seen, of Porsche race cars from early 356s, through Spyders, 917s, 935, etc. to GT1s. Truly a treasure trove for fans of air-cooled Porsche racers. Even without the textual sections, this would be a great pictorial history of Porsche racing, from driving an Austro-Daimler to victory in 1910 to producing the GT1 that won Le Mans in 1998. Printed on heavyweight, semi-gloss paper, the resolution of some of the more modern photos is outstanding, as is that of factory cutaway graphics. The textual sections provide a fast-paced narrative – there are no tables, graphs or charts to upset the flow. PORSCHE Gli anni d’oro is hardbound, with 320, 11-3/4 x 11-inch heavyweight, semi-gloss pages, containing many b+w and color photos, but no index. It should be available for $120 from your favorite book seller (ask for it), or from www. QuartoKnows.com; search on “PORSCHE”. October 2019 | PANDO 7

Porsche Parade Boca Raton

Yes, it was hot and yes it was humid; however, it’s

always a good time to meet other Porsche owners and see beautiful cars. The Boca Raton Resorts and Club was our hotel for the week and, being a grand old hotel, it provided us with a great location for all our activities. Barry and I have been to five of the last six Porsche parades and it never ceases to amaze me how PCA can flawlessly assemble a week of activities, tours and banquets. More than half of the entrants volunteered to help in one way or another. As with all parades, there was a Concours, Tech Quiz, TSD Rally, Gimmick Rally, 5K Run, Art Show Autocross, Golf Tournament, RC Cars, kids’ events and many tours. We toured the Fort Lauderdale byways to an island aboard the Jungle Queen and the BBQ, ribs, chicken and shrimp were a real hit.

I

’d heard about the Porsche Design Tower Miami, and thought this would be a perfect time to see it. We didn’t know how close we could get to the tower and were sure there’d be a lot of security. We turned into the drive and were promptly greeted by security. I explained we were in the area with 1,000 other Porsche owners and I’d like to take a few pictures. Well, that didn’t go over too well; however, I was allowed a few pictures. Barry got to look into the parking garage and saw a few Porsches and many high-end cars. There were a few unique things offered at this Porsche parade. One evening before a banquet we watched a Cuban man roll cigars. That’s right – Cuban cigars. Also, five specialty surfboards were brought to Parade. Three were auctioned off for a total of $19,100! Two were given away but we were not one of the lucky recipients that night. Gunner Mench, the President of the Big Island Hawaii Region bought a car on the east coast, a 944 Turbo, and had it wrapped as a Pink Pig. He

had a great time with it at Parade, and apparently the Pink Pig will make its way back to Hawaii at some point. Also, there was a Pink Pig miniature tractor race for Parade kids during the Concours. Since this was the 64th Porsche Parade, there was special recognition given to Burt Propp. Burt has attended 60 Porsche Parades! He is from the Golden Gate Region and is 92 years “young!” After having an accident this year, his license was taken away. He told us, “it wasn’t my fault because I didn’t see the other car.” In closing, congratulations to OCR for coming in second for our PANDO magazine cover. Porsche Parade is heading to Palm Springs in 2020, so remember it’s a “dry heat,” and we’re looking forward to seeing you there!

OCR Docent Team at Pebble Beach Story by Tom Gray and Photos by Frank Barcelona

PCA-OCR had a substantial presence this year on the Docent team at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the most prestigious event of its kind held in the world. The Docent team is responsible for leading tours for VIP guests at the Concours. Tours consist of a walk through the Concours field which is the eighteenth fairway of the Pebble Beach Golf Course. Docents point out selected cars and discuss their history and/or importance. If car owners are present and willing they may be asked to speak about the car. Two members of OCR were selected to participate in the Jackie Stewart Rolex tour, scheduled for leading dealers of Rolex Watches. Sir Jackie was not available this year but former Formula One Driver Mark Webber addressed the tour briefly. Frank Barcelona and Bruce Junor were among four docents participating in this very special tour. The Docent team this year consisted of twentythree persons, seventeen docents and five support members. As always, it’s a marvelous marque event with attendees from around the world and the combination of cars, their backstory, the people, scenery and competitive spirit created a truly exciting, memorable event.

My 914 Love Story Story and Photo by Kristen Bond

took great delight when the valet staff at my favorite restaurant finally asked me to just park it so they didn’t have to battle the unusual shift pattern. As for many of us who owned older cars in the 1990’s, passing the California smog test proved impossible and I was forced to part ways with my very first car, a car I never intended to sell. About 3 years ago while at LAX on my way abroad, I spotted a lovely bright orange 1972 9141.7 online. Before I had returned from my trip, the car was parked in my garage. As soon as I drove it, I knew I would never again be without a 914. Having said that, and pardon the phrase, it was a bit of a “gutless wonder.” It was time for some serious horsepower. I partnered with Hergesheimer Motorsports in Southern California and we dropped a 3.2L 6-cylinder Carrera S motor into my little beauty. We updated the front suspension and brakes to a 911, plus added the 911 triple cluster instrument package. Last, we put on 5 bolt Fuchs style wheels and new tires.

I am the proud owner of a 1972 Porsche 914, my second, and fourth in my family. Here’s the story…

My parents picked up their white 914 while honeymooning in Europe. They cruised the Old Country in style. As it happens, my sister and I joined the world and they needed a car a bit more practical for a growing family. It was very difficult for them to let the car go. When Mom returned to work, she went right out and purchased an orange 914 of her very own. When I turned 15, Dad and I went hunting for the perfect “starter car.” My first 914 was a red 1976 2.0. I learned how to drive in that car and as a teenager,

The interior is completely original (aside from the instrument package and stereo.) The prior owner did do some minor paint repair, but otherwise it is cosmetically very close to the original specifications. My husband and I put it on display in Dana Point at the Celebration of the 50 years of 914. We were in excellent company! So many of the cars at the event were in exquisite condition, and it was the first time in my life I had seen so many 914’s in one location. Just the other day as I was driving home, a car pulled up beside me with a very excited driver and said, “That is the most amazing 914 I’ve seen in years. Keep driving it!” Yes sir…I most certainly will!

Story by Glenn Billings and Photos by Larry Moore

“ W ow

it’s hot out!” It took a very determined group of 30+ PCA-OCR members enduring high temperatures on Sunday in late July to meet and drive from Porsche Riverside to the Palm Springs Tram Ride and lunch “on top.” 9:30 a.m. was our starting point and the heat was already registering mid-90 degrees. Our Palm Springs destination was 105 degrees and rising. Fortunately, our reward for escaping the heat lay at the top of San Jacinto Mountains where we rode the Tramway up 7,000 feet to cooler temperatures and clear, unobstructed beauty. Shortly after our arrival, it was a moderate 72 degrees and the timing was perfect, as we were sitting at the restaurant by 12:00 p.m., noon. The ride in the tram car was an e ticket; cabling past five environmental surroundings on our 24 PANDO | October 2019

20-minute journey to the top. The whole trip from beginning to end was 74 miles and took an hour and forty minutes. Now, the rest of the story and how we got to Palm Springs. Resetting our odometers back to zero, our 20 Porsches, a mixture of old air coolers and new GT-3s, pulled away from Porsche Riverside and headed west and south along Irving and Mocking Bird Street. This area, with its narrow warm bitumen road surface, swept through orange groves, horse farms and open acreage with sprawling haciendas dotting the dull pewter landscape. Once on El Sobrante, you find yourself in more desert-like conditions, with dusty beige chaparrals and huge boulders the size of semis. Just east of Lake Matthews, you turn left onto Cajalco, which then turns into Ramona Expressway. This is a long,

straight drive to the 215 where on both sides of the road nothing but uninhabited hills in the distance while up close, we saw cow farms, barren vegetation with rusted farm equipment, feed stores, piles of lumber and abandoned vehicles. After a brief stop in Perris, giant rocky foothills were in front of us. Once on the other side, the enormous open expanse of San Jacinto Valley with Banning to the south and Beaumont to the north appeared. With Palm Springs in sight but way off in the distance, everyone pulled over for a photo opportunity with the San Jacinto peak in the background. We continued our journey north to Beaumont and onto the 10 East passing the Morongo Casino. Up ahead were the strange sights of hundreds of towering motionless white wind generators. In

Lunch

at the Top

the midst of this ‘wind’ farm, Hwy 111 approached and we headed to Palm Springs with the San Jacinto Mountains in full view. The final five miles seemed like an illusion. As you drive up to the parking lot to take the shuttle to the bottom station, you visually see a normal gradual rise in the road, but you feel the engine pulling a little harder than normal. A couple in our group experienced overheating clutches which cooled down once we arrived. Don’t worry - they made it back.

t

After lunch, the tour ended and our group began the descent back home, not without hesitation since the weather on top was so cool and pleasant, we knew our cars would be broiling in the parking lot. You could hear people say, “Man, it is hot out!”

It’s not just the cars, and now it’s not just the grown-ups! With the new PCA Juniors program, PCA is about the kids too! The PCA Juniors program has been created so kids can enjoy PCA events, learn about Porsches and build the enthusiasm that runs through all of the Porsche Club of America.

Who is eligible?

What will the child receive?

PCA Juniors will receive a welcome package that includes an age-appropriate gift and PCA Juniors ID badge. PCA looks forward to developing the program and its features over time.

What does it cost to register?

It’s FREE! Participants must be registered by an active PCA member, and there is no cost to join!

Saturday October 12, 2019 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm + Orange Coast Region’s “Hearts and Garages Tour” moves to October, in an effort to beat the August heat! For the benefit of the newer members, the “Hearts and Garages Tour” is a progressive dinner where we enjoy each other’s company at four different garages in Orange County. Referred to as “Hearts and Garages,” because it’s a combination of a tour of OCR member’s garages and to raise money for our Region’s Designated Charity, the Semper Fi Fund.* The cost charged will be to reimburse the hosts for the progressive dinner, and participants have the opportunity to make a donation directly to the Semper Fi Fund. The event will start at Noon, and finish up in the evening, so you can expect a full afternoon of truly inspiring garages and of visiting with your friends. Registration will open in early September. Watch for more information in your email from OCR. (Please make sure your email listed at pca.org is accurate, so you will not miss anything!)

Pete Lech : peterlech@att.net *Semper Fi Fund is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization providing a variety of programs to assist wounded veterans in all branches of the United States Armed Forces. The organization describes its mission as “providing urgently needed resources and support for post-9/11 combat wounded, critically ill and catastrophically injured members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families.” As of March 2018, the Semper Fi Fund has issued 158,000 grants totaling $165 million in assistance. https://semperfifund.org/
