OCR Board Meetings All members are welcome to OCR Board Meetings, held after the breakfast meeting at Original Mike’s We thank them for their support.
President’s Message by Greg Lush Emotional deliberation Thanks to the efforts of your Board, and especially Monica, we have had the opportunity to listen to some fantastic speakers in 2014. A big thank you to all of our past and future guest speakers. During our August meeting we had the privilege to hear from Paul Kramer, a long time sponsor of the club with his family business AutoKennel (http://www.autokennel.com/). Paul, you have inspired this column, Emotional deliberation. As some of you know by attending Annie and my recent open house and the others will discover if you attend the hearts and garages tour (SEP13) we just purchased a new (older) home. Annie and I were looking for years, both of us having a pretty good idea in our heads on the house that would motivate us to make a move. However, on many occasions all of the pieces were there, but it just didn’t feel right. Then, the day after the
AutoX awards ceremony, with both of us having a touch of the Saturday night flu, we decided to go around to open houses. Within minutes Annie said, this is our new home, indeed a perfect example of emotional deliberation. If we were a Toyota Prius club this note would likely be a tough fit. However, I can tell you sometimes, when I return to my car, I say “boy I love that car and how it looks.” Admit it, you are going down the road and pass a building made of mirrors, sure you are taking a peak of yourself in your beautiful car. This is pure unadulterated emotion. Porsches are not only form, they are function as well. Approx. three to four years ago, I began my search for a dedicated track car. In my mind I could see the car I wanted; however, how to weed through all of the choices and make an informed decision. This is the time when you really need folks around you that you trust and who’s interests are to place you in a car that packs as many emotional connections as
possible. We, as a club, are very fortunate to have a fantastic partner / sponsor with Ed McRae and Walter’s Porsche in Riverside for new and used cars. For cars a bit older and some additional variety we have Paul with AutoKennel in Costa Mesa. For me I turned to my AutoX buddies, and we gathered around and agreed on the final car out of a short list. You can see from the image above that an emotional connection with this car was easy to find.

Editor’s Notes by Garey Cooper
The summer fades Our kids begin to worry about grades Carefree days Shorten their stays If each day is a precious gift How many do we have left? Enjoy them, take leisure for pleasure As they might be a dwindling treasure. As I write this, a friend in our local area faces a life-threatening return to a battle
he thought was already won. He is not young; one of my contemporaries. So I think of him and dedicate this column to him and all of those who may read it with challenges of their own. You are not alone. That Ribbon of Highway Our Autocross group is running out of road, sad to say. I have written about this before but our venue at El Toro is indeed being changed at long last. I must say, although I’ve not nearly had the time there I would have liked, that we have been extraordinarily lucky to have had the use of this site for so long. But there it goes; so now the search is on for new autocross locations. Do you know of one? Or if you even think you may know of one, please send our Co-Autocross Chairs Craig Adams or Don Chapman a note about it. Having been a member for some time I can recall many different driving locations that the club has used over time.
SEPTEMBER 2014
Some better than others of course. But El Toro is hard to beat and will definitely be hard to replace. Mr. Speaker In our latest national magazine, Panorama, John Morton is interviewed using the quick question and answer format. We were lucky enough to have Mr. Morton as the featured speaker at our 50th anniversary party. He was very entertaining, and interesting as well. The quick review format doesn’t do his wit justice but it’s worth a read. Doing Just Fine Porsche sales in the USA and the world for that matter are doing quite well this year. The Macan is selling and punching new holes in old records for total number of vehicles sold by Porsche. It is, to me, telling that the 4-cylinder Macan goes on sale in China first. We will see it in the USA, but not for another year or two.

It was the 59th Porsche Parade Held this year in the city of Monterey Committees were ready, volunteers set to go This was to be the largest ever, a really big show. They traveled from near and so many from afar In their colorful and neatly spiffed prepared car. Parade was planned for a week and a day, What friends would they see, what new friendships made. Competitions in Concours, Autocross and Time-Distance rallies Each with their banquets, to follow with prizes and tallies. There was an art show and quizzes with technical whizzes My head was spinning with all this calendar business. Fun tours like the Gimmick Rally was not a race, but a Chance to search for clues all over the place. Tours were offered and sights to see; A 17-mile drive of Pebble Beach’s coastal wonder or Big Sur with twists, turns, ocean views and scenery to ponder If you chose to visit Canepa to view special cars and have lunch You were not disappointed judging from glowing comments from this bunch. A wine bus was loaded with riders, sorry no one is a driver here A trip for those who wanted knowledge and tastes of wine not beer. Fun for all and you got to choose Thinking of it, you had nothing to lose. The Parade of Porsches was a highlight for sure With the Laguna Seca Racetrack as the lure With 600 plus cars staged by model and year The photo was taken‌ now time to get into gear Two laps around the track, Whee! There was nothing to fear. The end is near, the last night is finally here. Goodbye to Monterey, see you in Indiana next year.

Parade 2014 Continued The Orange Coast Region was well represented with 101 folks trekking north to be part of the event. Whether it was their first parade or they were a veteran of many, it was still a new place and experience. We had 53 entries, and over 100 members attending. Thanks to all for representing our region.
Judy & Pete Lech
There are many traditions at a Parade; The Welcome Party is the kick-off dinner where everyone gathers the night before events start. A hearty meal is always prepared and it’s the first chance for people to start to meet and connect. The Victory Banquet is held on the last evening and is the final event. This is the last chance to gather. Closing speeches are given, ticket drawings start with an avalanche of never ending and very sought after prizes to be given out. The very last ticket drawn is for the coveted “Trip to Germany”. A few OCR members have been lucky enough to have had their ticket drawn at a past Parade. We all hope it will be ours next time. The Concours Banquet starts off with a number of speeches given by top level German representatives from Porsche and with Peter Porsche as the “fatherly” draw. Peter Porsche’s conversational bantering with Mark Sheviz, the Master of Ceremonies, brought out his playful side.
Competition is always a challenge in every event and the bar always seems to be raised. We had many events in which OCR members participated. Not everyone was a trophy winner but definitely a winner in their effort. In addition to class trophies, Rose & Herb Wysard’s 1952 Glocker/ Porsche Roadster was awarded the People’s Choice Trophy. Restoration Group Award winners in the Weissach class were Debbie Drummond for her1958 Speedster and Brad Newell for his 1957 356. In the Zuffenhousen class Thomas Drummond won for his 1965 912 Prototype and Bob Weber for his 1997 934.5. We had five members who entered Autocross: Steven Hens, Greg Noss, Tom Ridings, Lisa Taylor, and Mark Trewartha. Lisa Taylor won 1st. place in the P12L class with her 2014 911 Turbo S and Mark won 2nd place in the S10M class with his 2010 911 GT3. Unfortunately none of our six entries in the Time/Distance/Speed Rally came home with trophies, but they were good competitors. They were Douglas and Pamela Carrie,Vincent and Anne Marie DePalma, Brett Donaldson and Iman Soliman, Dennis Howey, Michael and Bonne LeLesch and Greg Noss and Alan Sandoval. The same was for the six entries from OCR in the Gimmick Rally... everyone enjoyed a great drive, but agonized through the somewhat difficult questions. The coastal part of the rally was especially fun as we wandered the 17-mile drive through Pebble Beach. Another OCR competitor who came home with a
SEPTEMBER 2014
trophy was Denny Asbury for his 2nd Place in the T-shirt design contest...sorry Denny, we think you should have won 1st place! The week was full of planned activities to keep you and your Porsche on the move. There were five banquets where some great door prizes were awarded. Bonnie Lelesh won a tub of goodies at the Rally Banquet and Gloria Moore won a Bose headset at the Autocross dinner. In addition to the big 3 events: Autocross, Concours and the TDS Rally, each day had choices of tours to Hearst Castle, down to Ragged Point on Highway 1 for lunch, up to Canepa Motorsports Car Museum in the Santa Cruz mountains, and more. There was also a bus tour of local wineries. The Goodie Store tempted everyone to bring something home with the Monterey Parade logo on it, while the Art Exhibit showed how talented many of the Porsche community are. The Hospitality area provided an opportunity for camaraderie and some fun beer and wine tasting. Next year’s Parade will be In French Lick, Indiana and could be a good reason to take a road trip in your Porsche. Following is a list of our regions trophy winners. Congratulations to all.

Rice’s Ramblings:
This movement up and down varies the resistance signal to the gauge. As you use fuel the float moves down and the float’s slide contacts move down and it then changes the amount of resistance it signals to the gauge. The low level light comes on when the float reaches the bottom of it’s full
Questions & Answers
Story by Lee Rice Q: Have you done any conversions to the racing type single nut wheel lock?
-Craig W., Anaheim
NO! Sorry but this is a big job and as to what Porsche you are thinking about doing this? Racing needs are very specific and class regulated. If you are racing I would ask Tony Callas Rennsport. (310/370-7038). Tony ran a factory GT-1 team and knows the ins and a lot of outs with these wheels systems. I have seen many requests and tech. articles about changing the 997 GT-3’s “CLW” Center lock wheel tool (Center Lock Wheel) to the old reliable 5 stud & nuts system. You might want to look at some of those internet commentaries as to why???, I think it advisable to think this one out as: • there is no weight advantage with C.L.W. • the wheel accelerates no faster with CLW over 5-bolt wheels or the 5 bolt-nut system. • CLWs are certainly not easier to remove or install as 5-bolt/nut wheels are. • CLW’s require a strict check list that MUST be followed to remove and install these CLWheels. Look up Technical Information 73/10 ENU 405 “After Sales” Sept 16, 2010 4-pages of installation There are differences of opinion and racing experiences of just what works well for track and for street use. And unless you like to carry a 5 foot long torque wrench in your 911, you are at the mercy of what ever is available to
replace a flat tire. However, there is a new HAZET Tool from Germany, Nr. 66001000RA, it is a torque multiplier that is much smaller than a five foot torque wrench and fits in a smaller space. It is a hand turned crank, that uses gear reduction to torque the single nut to correct torque 600+) -once you find out exactly what specification you need. Hazet has it listed around $2,600. And I might add that there are kits available in all the Porsche parts catalogues for replacing the 5-bolt (2000-) wheels installation with 5-stud+ 5 wheel Solomon Braun holds the hefty torque wrench nuts! That tells you something.

Q: My fuel level was just above the “R” and the low level light was not on, but my Porsche sputtered a couple of times and then in a few minutes quit running. After the car was towed to a gas station the gas gauge pointed was(then) pointing below the “R” and the small red light was ON.
downward movement. The separate contact then makes a connection (black wire) to give the low level warning light it’s ground signal. As these mechanical float transmitters age the wires drag more against the sliding contacts and the float hangs up…. You know the rest. I have taken Fuel Level Transmitters apart repeatedly and tried to repair them but I had repeat problems and just could not trust them! I bought a new fuel transmitter and it immediately worked so much better. If you are going to try a repair your fuel transmitter, I would recommend that you at least carry a full, 1 gallon (minimum) safety gas can in your 911 until you regain confidence with your fuel gauge.
Isn’t the warning light supposed to come on early enough to warn you of running out of gas? I would like to try to fix it. It would be nice if it did that but it does not and this is a very common fuel level/warning sender failure in all Porsches! Up until the 1990s Fuel Level was transmitted by a float, moving against two signal wires, as it moved down –(or up). When you filled up your gas tank, the float, floated all the way up to the top and the two metal slides on each side of the float moved Carrera Turbo against two sensing wires that send a reading to the fuel gauge (green wire) that showed “4/4” (full).

Editor’s Notes
Continued from page 7 For those of you into Porsche trivia, this will be Porsche’s first four cylinder since the 968 Model. The four pot models began with the 924, went through the 944 and, the ultimate expression as mentioned, the 968. I would expect to see more of these, particularly in turbocharged form appearing in chassis from Stuttgart as emissions laws and Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards dictate automobile configurations into the future. Oops, don’t want to forget here, that the 356 was indeed a proud four cylinder. Though horizontally opposed rather than pumping up and down skyward, those original little mills are still running all over the world. As part of the larger empire at Volkswagen/Audi, Porsche will have the ability to reach deeply into the corporate parts bin for its motors and such. This will account for much of the base research being taken care of with perhaps better, more technical development into making whatever is selected more “Porsche Like,” at least one hopes so! The Emerging Market Also an interesting note is to be made on sales in China compared to the USA. I do believe that at some point, Porsche will sell more vehicles in China than they do in the US. Again per Panorama, Porsche in 2014 so far has sold 18,817 cars in the US compared to 16,465 in China. I am fascinated by what this may mean
30
to future developments for our favorite automobile manufacturer. How closely do the requirements of China mirror those of the US? I do understand that the “stretch” Panamera was specifically developed for China, as it is more common there for a car of that class/size to be driven by a chauffeur. A positive outfall of this is that the stretch is also available in the US market…will other such developments also be universally shared? Back in the late 90s and early 2000s’ the first generation GT3 was not sold in the USA for street use as a sample of something that others got but not us here in the US of A. And Just what have you been up to lately? Well the Orange Coast Region is pretty darn busy. Just go to our web site: www. pcaocr.com and read up on what is going on. We have had the “Shake Rattle & Rally” event this past July. Hopefully we’ll get an article on that to share with our readers soon. Thanks to Larry Moore for continuing to be our club rally guru. The famous “Hearts & Garages” tour is in this month September on the 13th. This has always been one of my personal favorites. And in addition to these, we have grown some calendar fixtures that go on every month and grow almost every month. We have Krispy Kreme, the Woody’s Burger Bahn, and Porsche and Pancakes. These along with our usual Breakfast Club every month at Original Mike’s, mean that you’ll never starve hanging around with the Porsche Club!
Of course Autocross is always active with events practically every month. Again, go to the web site and check up. I guarantee a good time will be had no matter what you choose to join. Speaking of Porsche Motors Back in the days before the Cayenne, Porsche made a good share of its profits from engineering activities for other firms. Notable among these were Formula 1; the “TAG” team used a Porsche engineered and supplied motor in the 1980’s as a matter of fact. A not too often mentioned success story. And they also famously supplied engineering talent to an American icon: Harley Davidson. This motor is still being made and by all accounts is outstanding on two wheels. This two-wheel foray resonates with me just now as I intend to take the motorcycle safety school preparatory to exploring returning to two wheels myself. It’s too late for a middle aged crisis so I don’t know what to call this one? Maybe we males are inclined to crises of later life as well as middle life…stay tuned. Good News for Pandemonium Actually a challenge as well. Our own little magazine has been attracting advertisers at a nice rate (thanks Cooper Boggs!). This is great so please do patronize one of our advertisers whenever you can. I have myself used many of them and the good thing is that not only is their technical expertise up to the best of standards, they are also enthusiasts… for them it’s not just a job. So go out and buy something from one of them, or get something oiled, polished, insured, stored, detailed, or heck; buy a new one! These folks deserve our business. Exit Okay Maryann the publisher usually has a say about how these run on so I am going to finish with a request to send your articles, or comments about articles in the Pando to us. I will try to do them justice, and it always interesting to hear about what our readers are thinking. Until next time then.

Questions & Answers continued from page 15
The August Road & Track has a full magazine feature on what is now the “HYPER CARS,” “SUPER CARS” of the 1990-00s, and even farther back the “Exotic Cars” from the 1970s on. Normally I don’t get into these hyper ventilated articles of pros and cons of cars so far out of reach financially, reasonably, and usability. This is a bit different as it covers the past icons of our younger dreams and aspiration. Most interesting for us is the 911 as it has had it’s super car title most correctly since 1975’s Turbo Carrera. At that particular time the Turbo Carrera could out perform and out run almost anything on the planet!
Others have since have been built for the sole purpose of looks and speed. The chapter about exotic-super and hyper car maintenance is a frightful awakening to reality! All of these hyper-super-exotic cars have one major problem; they lack real world usability, and that is what is reviewed here. And in the end one fitting editorial said it all, for me anyway. That briefly is Jack Baruth’s column going over all these cars and concluding with , “…in the end I bought a 911..”
Parade highlights included greeting from Peter Porsche
Nancy Troast with a Giant artichoke on the Gimmick Rally
That is something I still smile about.
