BOARD MEMBER MESSAGE Greg Lush

President

Sponsors, driving value for OCR Members! It is mid-morning, following a great breakfast meeting and fellowship with club members. As folks are leaving to enjoy the rest of their Saturday, your Board of Directors is gathering in the “lounge” to begin addressing club business. Our meetings are efficient, covering the mix of monthly business. My favorite part is when we start thinking of new ways to invigorate our club. The latest idea has to do with the sponsors, those who so graciously support our organization. The “Driving Value” Campaign was first discussed in July of 2016, and with the help of your Board, quickly transitioned from an idea to a reality. Driving Value has one simple objective: Increase the opportunities for our sponsors to meet club members and introduce their products or services. To reward

members for their efforts of visiting and meeting with our sponsors we will grant a $250 Visa gift card once a quarter. Here are some of the program requirements: • You must be a PCA member in good standing • Visiting a sponsor more than once a quarter is fantastic; however, it will not get you any more than one entry per quarter • Participants will be spot-checked and the winner will be verified with all sponsors visited • It is important to remember that the Driving Value Campaign is intended to drive business to our sponsors, therefore your visits should be meaningful • Sponsor cards may be picked up at OCR events and Sponsor locations ONLY

• •

• •

Completed sponsor cards may be handed in to any board member Drawings for the winner will occur on the first Saturday of every quarter (JAN, APR, JUL, OCT) at the breakfast meeting, winner does not need to be present to win The more sponsors that you visit the higher your odds of winning Completed cards will not be valid past the current quarter, once the winner is announced the process starts fresh for the new quarter

We strongly believe that the “Driving Value” campaign will be rewarding for both participant and sponsor. See you at the next OCR event. People. Porsches. Passion Greg Lush PCA OCR President September 2016 | PANDO 3

OCR’s Annual Toys for Tots Drive Will Soon Be Here! While we are in the process of securing the date, please help this year’s Toys for Tots bigger and better than last year by attending. It’s a family affair, and we always have great participation and support from our members, and we hope the tradition will continue. We expect to hold the event at the Huntington Beach Central Park Picnic Shelter and have the same great contribution of K-9, Mounted Police and the SWAT Team displays from H.B.P.D., as well as the Few, the Proud the Marines!

Here’s a ‘friendly’ idea.

If you’re hosting an upcoming get together, how about asking the guests to bring an unwrapped child’s toy rather than a host/hostess gift?? We’ve successfully turned frowns upside down during the Holidays … let’s keep up the good work and put a smile on a child many times over! Thank you for your support. 6 PANDO | September 2016

LETTER From the Editor Story by Garey Cooper, Photo by Cindy Nimtz

Garey and his favorite lady friend Mrs. Maxine Cooper at the 2008 White Gloves Concours

Get out and ride, do the concrete glide. Put your cares aside and with our club abide. We all drive our Porsches with pride, new or old, bold or several times sold, come ride with us and you can slide……side by side with our little tribe. Which event? That’s for you to decide!

What it is, what it was, and what it will be

It is the first of August and we at your little club “rag”, called for brevities sake the “Pando”, have to write about September. We pretend that August has already come and gone. Piece of cake, you think? Not so fast there, Mr. (or Mrs.) Whimple! My attention span, which is nearly double that of a gnat, only takes in a personal horizon of about a day and a half. In the magazine business we have to think in terms of 30 day chunks. What’s a month or so away will have come and gone by the time the ink dries. So, on occasion, terms like “was” or “will” are used with no regard for their actual time placement. In a sense, we are printed page time travelers taking you, dear readers, along in our magic space ship.

So, what “happened” in August? We “had” the breakfast club at Original Mike’s, The Walters Porsche Gimmick Rallye, (I always use the european form of rally with the “e” it is SO much more sophisticated), the New Members Picnic, the autocross at our new potential site in San Pedro, and the “Hearts & Garages” tour. Sadly, we also will have had the tribute drive for Sergey and Christy. As I write this, none of these things have really “happened”; they are gonna happen. Get the picture? So, the point that I am trying to make here is, “Hmmmmm, did I forget anything?” No, the point is that to properly publicize your activity we need 60-90 days of prenotice to make sure all of our tribe will have heard about it in time to organize their own calendars for participation. Please keep this in mind when planning so we can help you.

Print! Who cares? I am playing Pokemon here

Of course, this is for the print side of things in the “Pando”. I know this is very 20th century, but I still like to open my mailbox and see a shiny cover and crisp new print on an issue you can actually feel in your hands. But, we now are marching through the 21st century and digital media is all around us, even in our pockets and purses. Never to worry; we have social media well covered and you can go online at any time and with any device to

pcaocr.com, and get right onto the calendar for immediate daily satisfaction. In fact, I urge you to do so. As it happens, you can also download and read not only this issue of the “Pando”, but also issues from years and months past. And we will STILL send you the printed version, so you can personally smell the new ink and smear it on your fingers as you’re reading it while munching on that peanut butter and jelly sandwich. While I prefer the printed product, the digital age we are in does have some advantages. You can stay up to date with the latest information by following our Facebook page and/or by downloading the OCR app to your mobile device. If we’ve missed something, or there is updated information, those are two great places to get the scoop.

And the beat goes on

“Electrically they keep a baseball score”, per the song. Can you imagine that at one time people were behind score boards putting cards into and out of the various slots? It seems so arcane to us now, but it did happen. Along with setting bowling pins by hand, hilarious to us. But jobs and skills to the people who did the work. Now, let’s bring Porsche into this technical discussion. I just visited my son, Darren, who has the latest Tesla SUV. To say this vehicle is impressive would fall short of the mark, in my opinion. But this statement is particularly true from the point of view of integration

Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington

PROFESSOR PORSCHE’S WARS The secret life of legendary engineer Ferdinand Porsche who armed two belligerents through four decades

By Karl Ludvigsen, Published in 2015 by Pen & Sword Books, Ltd, South Yorkshire, England. Most “Porschephiles” will recognize Karl Ludvigsen’s name as the author of many detailed and accurate books on the technical aspects of Porsche automobiles. Many will recognize the cover photo of Prof. Porsche looking down through a steering wheel. This book covers a period of Prof. Porsche’s life, glossed over by books dealing with Porsche sports cars, most of which were built after the Professor’s death.

civilian flight even if it did become the dominant engine of the ‘air war’. Along the way, he designed his own carburetor to ensure consistent mixture regardless of the plane’s climb/descent/banking orientation. Those were different times – Porsche’s re-designed inline 6 aircraft engine, hailed as an achievement in lightness, weighed ‘only’ 640 pounds while producing 185HP.

The very readable narrative contains an immense amount of specific detail, with many pictures inserted into the text, some of which come from WWI and earlier. Included are some surprising pictures of Prof Porsche with Hitler and a picture of Hitler’s Luftwaffe Chief Hermann Goering, being taught (by Ferry Porsche), how to drive his gift ‘VW’, with Prof. Porsche in the back seat.

For WWII, Porsche did design many tanks and artillery weapons, but he designed to spec – e.g. a tank to carry a specified gun, at a specified speed, for a specified range, with a specified ammo capacity. There is an interesting thread of ‘palace intrigues’ over wartime contracts. Porsche was in charge of the VW works, and if no VWs were to be built, he had to find some product to keep his 6,000 workers paid. Of course, other companies wanted the same contracts.

PROFESSOR PORSCHE’S WARS does not show a new facet of Porsche’s life. It does deal with a not well-known period in the life of an ingenious and very thorough design engineer. The author offers new insight into the original intentions of the VW program, and the corruption behind the imprisonment of Porsche by the French. Porsche is never shown as a warrior but instead as a technically focused, possibly even anti-military, design engineer. In WWI, he did design ‘tug’ vehicles intended to haul heavy guns, but his aircraft engine was designed for

PROFESSOR PORSCHE’S WARS portrays the Professor as clearly indifferent to the practicality of the equipment he designed, as applied to the military’s needs in combat. Similarly, Hitler is shown as having a particular fascination with the design and development of military equipment, as distinct from the design and development of an effective military strategy. One ‘secret’ described is the personal rapport between Porsche and Hitler. This created resistance and animosity in the companies and officials with whom Porsche dealt, but resulted in numerous

personal awards from ‘The Third Reich’. One honorarium, which was to haunt him later, was a rank in the SS. All in all, this book gives a very detailed and comprehensive description of Porsche’s design and development (and managerial) work during the period including both World Wars. A most interesting narrative of design challenges as well as his interactions with competitors, the Military ‘establishment’ and government bureaucrats. The breadth of Porsche’s design efforts is particularly amazing considering that he had very little formal technical training, and that training had been focused on electricity. A must for “Porschephiles” interested in Porsche as more than just the designer of modern sports cars. PROFESSOR PORSCHE’S WARS consists of 286, 8-1/2 x 11 inch pages, with many black & white illustrations. There is a bibliography of well over 100 entries and 7 two-column pages of index, It should be available for $60 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it) or from http://www.amazon.com/books September 2016 | PANDO 9

AUTO-X CORNER

Autocross is fun for the whole family! Story by Eric Budai, Photos by Eric Budai, Kris Schuessler, Paul Novotne, and Douglas Volder But Uncle E, I just want to huck it!”

Those are the words my nephew, James, used to describe his intended driving experience following the purchase of a tired, high mileage, twowheel drive truck that needed new ball joints and a smog cert. In his mind, he TrackMaster Steve Yeoh gives Neelu some pointers pictured the truck as a desert style, pre-runner truck sliding sideways and jumping ramp to ramp in Redbull or Monster wrapped livery. The words kept coming back to me, “huck it”. In reality, to an inexperienced driver, that really meant “wreck it.” Any young kid would be drawn to the “wahoo” factor of such stuff, and who wouldn’t? The reality of this began to sink into James when I asked him, “Who is funding this project?” Certainly not Dad, and not on Taco Bell wages either. He is fortunate enough just to obtain basic insurance. Hucking it

12 PANDO | September 2016

James and I had been discussing driving, cars and 4x4s as a whole, when I encouraged him to enroll in a secondary driving school. Sure, he had obtained his California drivers license, but did he really know how to drive? I attempted to increase his level of excitement about really knowing how to drive. Fine car control. Apexing. Track in, track out. I thought about my own two daughters’ pathway to driving. Both were exposed to cars, bikes, boats and many mechanical things from an early age. Twitter, Facebook and Pokemon were not of interest. Their participation in the autocross program was not a surprise, but more of a pleasant transition. Both girls are now very good drivers. I have no problem letting them drive on long trips while I doze off or fiddle with Soduku. Fortunately, they still do not care about social media and its distractions. Otherwise, I really don’t trust anyone else’s driving, and usually offer to drive, instead of being driven somewhere, given the choice. The point of knowing how to drive is not lost on OCR members. In the Walter’s Porsche Autocross series, we have a growing number of up-and-coming family teams: Kris and Samantha Schuessler, Steve and Neelu Yeoh,

Douglas and Gus Volder, Jerry Griffin and his nephew Kenny, Quynn Nguyen and Amanda. Autocross is a great way to spend the day with your kid or loved one, sharing common challenges and experiences. And while it is fun to compete against your friends and fellow OCR members, the competition amongst family members is always the best. While having your time beat by someone else can be a drag, having your kid beat your time is one of the proudest moments in a parents’ life. Eric and Amelia Budai on grid

During the second part of our season, we have a few more instructors available to lend a hand toward extra instruction. New or old, Porsches are designed to be driven, and there is no better place to drive your Porsche than at an Autocross event. Our “first time guy”, Keith Gregorio, has lots of useful info if this is your first time autocrossing with us. PCA members can signup on MotorSportReg. com and create a driver’s account. If you’d like to take a class on driving, Walter’s Porsche also hosts a Driver’s Control Clinic every February. This is yet another great way to learn what you and your Porsche are capable of in a safe, friendly environment. Walter’s has a great new facility in Riverside, and general manager, Ed McRae, is almost always at one of our events with one of the latest offerings from Porsche. The Club thanks them for their continued support of the autocross program. Momo and GMG can also assist you in preparing your car for track events. We hold autocross events almost every month, and it is open to all PCA members and associate members that hold drivers licenses.

Samantha and Kris Schuessler with the Gulf 911

As for my nephew, months later, he is thinking about selling the truck and replacing it with something more reasonable. Keeping the gas tank filled while maintaining a 6000 pound “Huckster” is an unsustainable business model. One can only imagine the vortex of Taco Bell earnings twirling away. See you trackside, Eric. MALCOM FLETCHER Story and Photos by Lee Muse Art by Malcom Fletcher

I

n June, Evonne and I traveled to Tofino, British Columbia at the repeated recommendations of several of our Canadian friends. We met many wonderful people, experienced culinary excellence; saw over 30

16 PANDO | September 2016

whales, 2 black bears, caught many fish, hiked and experienced endless beautiful scenery. Our friends did not steer us wrong! We are already planning our next trip.

A small coastal town, Tofino, caters to tourists seeking whale watching, seeing wildlife, hiking, going to the famous Hot Springs, a magnificent coastline, fishing, and SURFING. Surfing is huge, everyone surfs and at this time of year

as late as 10 PM. The main means of getting around to the islands and sightseeing is by boat or float plane. I’m not really a boat person, so we opted for the float plane. What does all this have to do with Porsches? Meet Malcolm Fletcher, a young energetic pilot that has a love for Porsches beyond most I know (me for sure), and he does not own one. We arrived at the float plane dock about 7:00 AM for a flight we had scheduled to the Hot Springs. I was wearing my yellow/black GT3 hat that I had made some time ago and that’s all it took. Malcolm shared his passion for Porsches as well as the fact that he couldn’t afford one….yet. The closest he gets is an occasional ride with a friend that owns a GT3 (and others), and his own Porsche art.

Malcolm and Plane

Malcom grew up with a VW Beetle in the family. It eventually rotted in the driveway and became his playhouse. When he was able to purchase his first car, he was living in Germany. With a DM1200 budget, a Porsche 911 was out of the question. Malcolm studied graphic design with plans on pursuing a career in automotive design. I think he would be very happy if he landed an engineering job at Porsche! It is summer tourist season now in Tofino, and with that Malcolm is logging over 20 flights a day. His record is 23! The morning after we went to the Hot Springs, he flew Neil Patrick Harris and his husband, there as well as other points in the islands. It was their anniversary. We can all appreciate the reality of having his passion for cars and painting being put on the back burner. “I’m knackered and just want to paint and work in the garage!”

How Malcolm’s love for Porsches started

“I think the Porsche lines always appealed to me as well as the direct

lineage to the Beetle. I love racing and always liked the underdog element to a built Beetle, nobody would ever brag about beating a Beetle, but the other way around...! I painted a series of large VW paintings for a museum (3’x4’ or 4’x4’ acrylic paint on finished 1/4” plywood) as well as my own personal love of the shape and the car itself. Having the last name Fletcher, and being involved with aviation all my life, led to me painting a previous bug hood like the #55 Carrera Pan Americana 550. I loved the graphic elements of the script on the hood and set off to paint my first large scale 550. I have a close friend, John C., who is a Porsche fanatic who has owned more different Porsches than I have socks. He took me to a VW show in his freshly restored 356B. He is now waiting on the arrival of a 911r. He is a collector of historic racing memorabilia, an artist, and was a true inspiration in getting me to follow my passion for Porsche through art. I grew up in an aviation family, my father a pilot and air force navigator, my brother an aviation historian and all the great relatives built aircraft during the Second World War. I have been flying for 7 years on the coast of Vancouver Island as a commercial pilot, instructor and have conquered my fear of water the last 3 years as a floatplane pilot. I am truly fortunate to enjoy all that I love as I work half the week flying and spend my days at home restoring vintage VWs, and painting the cars that have made Porsche the legendary marque it is”

Malcolm’s latest VW project

Malcolm was an endless book of stories about his painting, cars and life in general experiences. Our favorite was what we have titled the “The 6 Day Crunch”. Enjoy!

history. I moved from British Columbia to Chula Vista for school. When I arrived, I found my roommate and longtime friend from Europe had bought a shiny blue ‘67 Baja bug. I thought bringing a rust-free Beetle to British Columbia would be awesome. So, needless to say, I went looking and turned up a light grey ‘67 that was fairly stock and clean. The rear end was lowered and the nose stuck up in the air, so I set about lowering it. We were fortunate to befriend a Canadian running a little garage in the area. He allowed us to work on our cars in the parking lot. Cars built, we had a great time cruising around Southern California in our bugs. Before we knew it, school was over and it was time to head home to British Columbia. The brake pedal on my car had started to feel spongy, so I decided to head to the garage, get it sorted and finish prepping the car for the 2000 mile journey home. Less than 2 blocks from the garage, a car pulled out in front of me from a taco restaurant and I hit the brakes. It was a sickening feeling as the pedal hit the floor and the car kept on going. I swerved around the car, only to meet up with the back end of a semi-truck. OUCH! My arm went through the steering wheel breaking off the horn ring... which was now sticking out of my arm just above the elbow! Did I say OUCH?! The truck driver came back to see if I was ok and asked if we needed to call the police. As he flicked some of the grey paint from my car off the bumper, I told him “no, I was ok, and I would have to fix the car myself anyway”. He drove off and I proceeded to the garage in my stricken bug. It wasn’t hard to stop, as the headlight buckets were jammed into the tires, which created a lot of white smoke. I now had one week until I was due to leave San Diego, so we set out to find a Beetle body shell, some fenders and a hood. A few calls turned up a ‘65 with a tree growing through it for $200. I cut the tree out and we hauled the body back

Fletcher Aviation

to the shop. Next stage was to remove the electrical system from my smashed up Beetle. The body was removed and donated to a guy building a Baja. Over the next few days, I swapped all the parts over to the new (older) body. By day five I had a running car and on the sixth day, I masked off the windows and lights and painted it a two-tone grey and white.

Malcolm has so much energy and passion! You got to love it. Beyond the building of cars, the discussion of his art attributes was the most rewarding for me, personally. Please enjoy the pictures of his paintings and certainly if the opportunity to go to Tofino presents itself, you will not regret it! When we left I gave him my GT3 hat and the smile was priceless.

The next stage was to pack the car and hit the road. I drove to Sacramento and spent the first night in a hotel. The following day, I drove through the night and caught the early morning ferry to Vancouver Island. I got bacon and eggs on the boat and proceeded to fall asleep...in said eggs. One hour more of driving got me home.”

My First Love Story and Photos by Parmbir Kahlon 22 PANDO | September 2016

September 2016 | PANDO 23

Growing up 8,448 miles away in a rural village in Northern India, my family had a small farm that we tended to as a means for a living. From day one, I was always curious about how automobiles worked though we had never owned one ourselves. I would go to the city with my dad on a bicycle just to see various kinds of automobiles and try to memorize the names and body types. I would beg my dad to buy me automobile cards, which I would sneak into my backpack and take with me to school. All I used to do during school was daydream about owing a lot of cars one day, but deep down, I knew my family or I would never be able to afford one. At age 11, everything changed when my family and I came to the United States in 2001. I was given the opportunity to pursue a higher education and perhaps own my first car one day. I was overwhelmed and excited by the amount of cars I saw on the roads in California. I would sit in front of my house just to see the cars drive by. The only sound that I was interested in listening to was the different exhaust sounds of the cars whizzing by. I would also collect all 24 PANDO | September 2016

kinds of toy cars from various garage sales. It wasn’t until a couple of years down the road that I would fall in love with a very unique type of automobile: PORSCHE. One seemingly normal day that started off as any other, a day that remains forever etched in my memory for one reason, and one reason only: that was the day my love for Porsche began. I remember walking into my cousin’s garage as he was taking off the car cover from a red vehicle. I could not stop staring at the car as I walked around it,

just admiring its beauty. I fell in love with every part of the car, from the beautiful curves to the simple yet classic interior. I remember closing the door a couple of times just because the sound was almost like music to my ears. Jerry Seinfeld read my mind when he said, “the way the door closes, I’ll just sit there and listen to the sound of the latch going, ‘cluh-CLICK-click’ that door! I live for that door. Whatever the opposite of planned obsolescence is, that’s what I’m into.” To this day, sometimes I still close the door over and over again just to hear that sound.

The sound of the engine was unique itself, something that I had never heard before. Dieter Landenberger perfectly described it when he said, the “typical soundtrack of a Porsche is a unique mix between the thrilling melody of the engine, the crescendo of the valve trains, and the tempered trumpeting of the exhaust system.” I loved that sound and always will. At that moment, I was simply lost in an imaginary world thinking about driving on an open curvy road. The only sound I could hear over and over again during that moment was the sound of the engine and the September 2016 | PANDO 25

door ‘cluh-CLICK-click.’ Finally after wondering and trying to figure out what kind of car it was, I asked my cousin and he said, “Porsche 968,” the two words I will never forget. It was love at first sight. I could not believe it when my cousin asked me if I wanted to take the 968 out for a spin. Pulling out of the driveway, I was nervous and excited at the same time. Adrenaline was pumping through my veins and as I shifted into 6th gear; for the first time in my life I had chills down the back of my spine, goose bumps covering my skin, and the hair on the back of my neck was standing straight up. I felt blessed that day to be driving a Porsche and to be able to hear the engine’s sweet purr as I pressed the gas pedal to the floor board. The handling of the 968 was unrivaled. After that, I couldn’t wait to have my own 968. Over the years, I had been looking for the same red 968 while going to school and trying to save up enough money. About

26 PANDO | September 2016

two years ago, while I was in graduate school in Portland, Oregon, a red 240 hp, 3.0 liter, 4 cylinder, 6-speed 1994 Porsche 968 was on sale in Oceanside, CA. I drove down to California right there and then, and I was finally united with my first love. The car of my boyhood dreams was mine at last! I love the simplicity of my 968. The 968 is a pure driving experience and you feel everything and hear everything. Its 305Nm made it to the highesttorque normally aspirated 4-cylinder (3.0 L), engine in the world during it’s production run from 1991 to mid-1995. I love driving it every day, whether it is to grab a gallon of milk or drive up the scenic Pacific Coast Highway. Any excuse I can find to drive my 968, I take. The longest and the most amazing drive that I have done thus far was from San Diego, CA, to Olympia, WA. Waking up every day, the only thing I look forward to is driving my 968 no matter where it is the I am driving.

Two of the best decisions I have made in my life were buying the 968 and visiting the Porsche museum. The Porsche factory tour and the museum is an amazing experience that every Porsche enthusiast should experience at some point in their life. Seeing how each and every part, from the dashboard, to the seats, to the engine, of a Porsche is put together was an indescribable experience for me. Running around and trying to buy Porsche toy cars and books, I felt like a kid all over again. I hope to expand my collection of the classic Porsches from my current 968 to the 356 Speedster, 928, 944 turbo, and 993s one day. I hope to meet other great Porsche enthusiasts, people who not only love driving a Porsche, but admire its beauty and simplicity as well. There are many ways to say five words but I will end with these. “Porsche. There is no substitute” - Ferdinand Porsche.

BREMBO, the company with Porsche that makes our brakes, is now going electronic, as everything else these days. Now it is “Brake By Wire”, according to SAE Engineering and should be seen by 2020 -SAE Auto. June 2016 MAHLE, Porsche’s piston/cylinder supplier since the beginning, is developing a further combustion process

refinement using a pre combustion chamber located in the engine cylinder head. Imagine a ¾” diameter piston, about the size of a flashlight battery, on top of a regular piston. Now, imagine that piston going up inside a matching cylindrical chamber in the cylinder head.

that flame producing energy mass, called a “Mahle Jet Ignition”, burns the lower combustion chamber’s Air-Fuel charge evenly and it can safely burn an extremely lean Air/Fuel Ratio-without ‘pre-ignition “knock”. This technology works on gasoline and diesel engines.

The new system consists of a “prechamber” with a fuel injector and the igniter. This (Direct Injection) is triggered inside the pre-chamber and

My mechanic took it and tuned the air screws to lower the idle speed, but that doesn’t seem to help.” : Right! It won’t work, because it does not work that way. Idle speed is adjusted with the IDLE SPEED SCREW. That screw only adjusts fuel volume for idle speed when the engine is in the normal Idle Speed Range-below 1,200 rpm.

A

In order to reset the idle speed, one MUST assure that the MFI TEN “DEMANDMENTS” have been followed perfectly, to the letter, before adjusting anything on the MFI system. I know. I’ve been there, done that, and I wrote “MFI’s TEN DEMEMDMENTS” for Panorama, Pandemonium, Early 911S Registry, and R-Gruppe News decades ago. Look them up online, you should be able to find them easily. Anyone going off and adjusting the MFI first is only compounding the problem. A few things to check : • First, is the IDLE VACUUM RETARD on the ignition distributor? • Are the vacuum hoses from the Nr. 1 and nr 4 throttle stacks leaking? The original type vacuum hoses are cotton weave wrapped rubber and they dry out, rot, crack, and leak. • Is there good vacuum from Nr.1 & Nr. 4 air stacks? • Check the brass vacuum hose tubes for being clogged from oil-fuel fumes and plugged up. • Check the ignition “Vacuum Box” to see if it is vacuum tight? If any of these items are not working perfectly -you will never have a steady, consistent, idle speed. • Check the control rod connecting the MFI fuel lever to the throttle linkage cross-shaft? The specific length is fixed. NEVER CHANGE THIS SPECIFIED length.-see MFI Ten “Dememdments” article. • Do you have very hot air coming out of the MFI’s Thermostat? Check the air hoses from the left Header/ Heat Exchanger to the MFI Thermostat. 30 PANDO | September 2016

With a perfectly new and precisely adjusted engine as well as a good MFI on a very warm day at 85 degrees F’+ the MFI will run at a slightly higher idle rpm than it normally does in cooler weather. And the same engine, 6 months later, in very cold weather, will run at a lower rpm. Why? “It just does that!” There is just so much adjustability in the MFI system. We’ve become spoiled by EFI & DME systems and MFI is just not that precise. MFI is a racing/Road fuel injection system. It is very reliable and runs so fantastic at high RPM which is why those engines are loved so much. Read, take notes, & Good luck.

Q

: I recently bought a new Boxster and wondered if I should let it sit and idle to warm up in the mornings before driving? : Yes, Good idea for at least 10 seconds, no more. Modern automobile engines do not need the old warm up at idle. Easily drive off and use modest speed for a few blocks. After you see positive oil (water) temp of 170180+F’ you can nail it…. However with the new Carreras, (those un denoted turbocharged 911s), one should be advised to drive slow and easy at least at least 3 minutes before shutting down, particularly after freeway or spirited driving. And no boost blasts within a few blocks of your stopping destination. Oh, and I am sure I don’t have to remind Porsche drivers to never do that old high school bit of rev the engine and shut it off.

A

“Evo-Blue”, my highly evolved 1968 911 gets evolution-ized, again. Next month: installing a 993 oil system, and a 1972 OIL DOOR.

Letter from the Editor Continued From Page 7 into our modern (post modern?) digital world. Of course, being “gear heads”, we poured over the machine and explored and discussed the merits and demerits of all the techno genius available within four wheels. Where we eventually got in our discourse was that Tesla came to the world via the “App” side of things, rather than through the “car” side of things. As such, we decided (you can disagree) it was less about the driving and more about the integration side of human experience. I find this rather interesting as we haul pell mell through the century. Early cars, through to perhaps the late sixties or early seventies, expected you to know about things like, chokes, carburetors, parking brakes, clutches, gears, and starter motors. If you are old enough, you can remember that it was easy to “flood” the carburetor, foul the plugs, and render the motor difficult, to impossible, to start. So, the expectation was that you had knowledge, at least at an elementary level, of what made a car go, stop, and run well or run at all. This trivia may strike you as nostalgic, but trust me, a call from a loved one to jump start their car on a hot summer day after the battery had been drained trying to start it carried absolutely NO romance. Just sweat and a skinned knuckle or two. There is no start on the Tesla, no choke certainly, and no need to know anything except to get in, point it someplace and generally go there. If you’re not sure where, the car will tell you. And getting to the finer points, in many situations you don’t even have to point it. Yep, the car does that too! But, and here’s the big deal I think. This car integrates into your smart phone, iPad, or tablet, and lifestyle. Not the other way around. So, tell it to call Mom. It will. If it is feeling as if it needs a charge, don’t worry. The car will tell you about it, including where to go to get those kilowatts.

34 PANDO | September 2016

Porsche is working on the “E Concept” per the press. As I recall we can expect to see this in 2017 or 2018. What is crucial, in my humble opinion, is how they integrate the new “App” based world into the design. I have read this is in the design mix. It just may be the most important thing they can do to ensure there are Porsche’s through to the end of the century.

30,000!

That’s about how many people die in cars per year in the USA, according to “Wikipedia”. It seems we peaked at around 50,000 per year in the 1970’s, and while we are on a general downward trend the number is still mind boggling. Chances are, millennials may not know someone who died in a war, but they may know someone killed in or by a vehicle. This is a very big number. Now take the insurance claims, costs, and devastation caused by this, and understand that the vast majority of accidents are caused by the person, not the vehicle itself. Texting, drinking alcohol, and unsafe driving kill us. Lots of us. Now imagine how the insurance companies (perhaps not the car repair shops) would love to wipe away 80 or so percent of their losses each year? There you have it! Autonomous cars are coming to a neighborhood near you, and there is, in my opinion, no doubt of it. But we love Porsche! Yes we do and we pay for the privilege. Speaking of print it will take 180,00 or so printed George Washington’s to buy a nice new 911 Turbo. But when YOU can’t drive it, AND you care more about syncing your calendar with it, what will Porsche do? Stay tuned, it could be interesting.

Tell us a story!

Okay, we are the BEST magazine in the Porsche Club of America world (for our size). One huge part of that judgment was because we have many

contributions from our members which would be YOU. So, have you done something interesting in, about, or because of a Porsche lately? Tell us and your fellow club members about it…. share and be nice!

Notably

Okay if you’ll recall I was musing about the full and correct name as well as the meaning of the full and correct name for Porsche Manufacturing. Here it is from our very own Douglas Smith! Thanks and now finally we know the meaning of “AG”…….. I’ve just read your Editor’s Notes in the June Pando, and, although I’m sure you’ve already received plenty of responses, I thought it would be fun to look this up myself, so here it is: Dr. Ing. h.c.
