LETTERFrom the Editor One of the true luxuries PCA-OCR members enjoy is September’s summer -like driving weather; but that’s the beauty of living in Southern California! You want driving ideas? There’re many throughout your September Pando including the popular 9/9/17 New Members Picnic in Laguna Niguel, 9/17/17 Idyllwild Octoberfest tour and a stunning North Carolina tour 9/209/24/17.

Story by Marcia Salans Photo by Dick Sartor

Continuing the driving theme, Dennis Varnum shares his experience participating in the Spokane, WA Porsche Parade; Bruce Power’s perspective and Paul Novotne’s pictures vividly capture San Pedro’s unique AX driving event and Don Chapman’s driver ed article focuses on “How to avoid skids.” Jim Marshall shares his European trip and a very special letter written by a Porsche Engineer on the origins of the 914; while “Where’s Pando?” journeys to Tahiti, Puerto Rico, the Serengeti and the state of Washington.

Join the experience and celebrate the 356 Club’s annual Concours - for the first time in Huntington Beach - as well as Fred Aikins’ personal 356 experience. Rounding out this Pando issue is Bruce Herrington’s book review “Porsche Sounds”, Rice’s Ramblings, Pfun Pfacts, Bruce Zandbergen’s “For The Love of Porsche,“What’s In Your Garage” and PCA-OCR member comments in App Chat. Two very, very special commendations require recognition: Riverside Porsche being named a 2017 Premier Dealer; and our very own Garey Cooper and PCA-OCR Pando recently receiving the Betty Jo Turner award being named 2016 Best Overall Newsletter. Start your engines and enjoy the drive! Best, Marcia Salans “Every Member Has A Story” “Every Porsche Has A Story”

Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington

PORSCHE SOUNDS (Edition PORSCHE Museum), by Dieter Landenberger, published by Edel Germany GmbH, Hamburg Germany Thirty different PORSCHE sound tracks are presented, documenting such distinctions as 356-1500, 356-1500 GS Carrera, 550, RSK and RS Spyders, 911 GT2 and GT3, etc. This is an interesting book to read, despite the title. There are six chapters, each dealing with an ‘era’ of Porsche automobiles, ranging from Prologue to The PORSCHE Principle. The included CD contains the thirty different Porsche sound tracks. This publication is part of the “Ear Books’ series, which bills itself as “Sophisticated Coffee Table books with music.” The subtitle ‘Edition Porsche Museum’ refers in part to (1) The fact that the Porsche Museum is listed as copyright holder for all of the many, many pictures, and (2) The fact there’s another edition of PORSCHE SOUNDS containing three CDs, not just one. This book has a very European flavor with irregular page layouts, lots of white space, and text in both German and English. The Introduction nicely captures Ferdinand Porsche’s pre-PORSCHE automotive work, with a uniquely comprehensive collection of photographs. There is an illustrated table of the thirty sound tracks, and at appropriate places in the text there is a graphic reference to the relevant sound track. Though the textual descriptions of the various models are concise but comprehensive, the captions provided for the many pictures (placed remotely but

tied by a numbering system), are brief at best. A ‘European’ subtlety in the design of this book is that - interspersed in the continuing story of the evolution of Porsche automobiles told on black pages - are tidbits on special models, printed on white pages. The ‘white pages’ relate specifically to Porsche models whose sound tracks are on the CD. The sound tracks present on-the-apron, in-car and drive-by sounds. Compared to modern TV audio, some of the tracks are less than impressive, in part because there is no narration of what you are hearing, just the track label displayed by Windows Media Player; files are only labeled as TrackNN. To this reviewer, the audio presentation is interesting, but considerably less ‘professional’ than that of those ancient 33rpm LPs - ‘Sounds of Sebring’ and ‘Porsche Sound History’. The sound tracks are different, and it might be interesting to put the appropriate track on ‘repeat’ while reading the text for the model in question, but to this reviewer, the sounds add little to what is, in its own right,

a worthwhile book on the evolution of Porsche automobiles. As a book, this is an outstanding, wellillustrated, chronology of Porsches, from 356-01 to the RSR of 2015, including the Panamera Turbo and the 919 Hybrid along the way. As a tribute (?) to Porsche’s rapid pace of model development, the 4-cyl Boxsters / Caymans are too new to be included in this book. Interestingly, while the 928 is covered in some detail, the 924, 944, 968 ‘transaxle’ cars are barely mentioned and not included on the CD. PORSCHE SOUNDS is a hardbound, coffee-table sized book, with 252, 11x11 inch heavyweight pages and is very well illustrated. There is no dust jacket and no index. Where this reviewer is concerned, forget the CD – buy this book as an outstanding description of the evolution of Porsche automobiles. It’s all about the cars, not the company or the people. It deserves to become one of those classic books no Porschephile should be without. As of this writing it is available for $40.00 from Amazon Books. September 2017 | PANDO 9

PORSCHE PEOPLE : Pfun Pfacts He’s a Rambling Man,

Up close and personal with Lee Rice, author, Rice’s Ramblings

A PCA-OCR Member since 1971, Lee’s been around the block! Specifically engine blocks!

Lee has been writing Articles for the Pando / Pandemonium since 1992. George McClelland felt the Club Magazine lacked technical articles so he reached out to Lee and “Rice’s Ramblings” was born, and he’s been writing for us ever since. Lee’s expertise is repairing / modifying 911s and 930 turbos. His ‘baby’ is a 1968 911 with 466,000 miles ‘on some parts of it’ and 46 years of repairs, modifications, time trials, vacations, daily driver and tons of modifications, upgrades and updates, and oh, on his 13th or 15th engine which is now a 3.6 Turbo! Asked why Porsche? Lee’s response is simple, “Why not?” He wanted something that ran at Le Mans and finished in one piece. The only thing he knew that did that was a Porsche. Lee loves to help those who need to work on their Porsches. He also enjoys receiving technical questions from OCR members and digging into troublesome problems for those who reach out and “Ask A Mechanic” – see Pando page 39. His objective in his writings is to dispel or remove some myths of the technical things about Porsches. He tries to simplify the different systems and make understanding much easier. If you have a question about your German-engineered ‘baby,’ don’t be shy, “Ask A Mechanic!!!”

DRIVING SKILLS

How to Recover from a Skid This discussion on how to recover from a skid brings together all of the different driving and visual components we’ve learned about in the previous “How to Drive Fast” articles.

The main causes of an understeer skid are:

Losing control of your car and getting into a skid on the track can be a scary thing, but losing control on city streets can be even scarier with all the extra obstacles (trees, curbs, street lights, pedestrians, animals, etc.)

4. Poor car setup

1. Braking too hard into a corner 2. Entering a corner with too much speed 3. Accelerating too early/ too rapidly

through the corner, and / or

First, you may find yourself in two types of skids, (1) understeer, and (2) oversteer. These two types of skids happen when the car has exceeded the maximum traction circle for each tire. Understeer (which can be referred to as “push”) is usually the easiest to correct.

UNDERSTEER: Understeer skids occur when your front tires lose traction as you’re entering a corner. So, when your front tires exceed their available traction, and you’re turning the steering wheel, your Porsche keeps going straight, or “pushing” ahead (it’s not turning as much as you would like). Most manufacturers engineer their cars to understeer from the factory floor. The manufacturers do this because it’s the easiest skid to correct. 12 PANDO | September 2017

to lift off the throttle. This is a good thing because it throws the weight of the car forward, giving the front tires more traction. If the tree is still growing large in the windshield, the next response for the typical driver is to hit the brakes. This is also good (to a point) because it puts more weight on the front tires. The real trick is to make sure the front wheels do not lock up. In summary, to recover from an Understeer skid:

In reality, skids aren’t really something to fear; as long as you know (1) what causes them and, (2) how you can safely correct them. What’s important is your awareness and understanding of Weight Transfer Control.

Story by Don Chapman Photos by Paul Novotne

1. Ease off the throttle 2. If needed, gently apply braking input,

and

3. Ease off the steering lock (straighten The green line shows the intended driving line. The red line shows the unintended understeer skid path as the car pushes out wide of the intended drive line.

So, understeering isn’t a steering problem, it’s a weight transfer problem that can only be corrected with the brake and gas peddles. How do you correct an Understeer situation? Here’s an example: You enter into a corner, turn the wheel and the car doesn’t turn as much as you need. You’ll hear the front tires squealing as they’ve lost grip with the road surface. You realize you’ve exceeded the traction circle for the front tires. What do you do? The typical driver’s response is usually correct because the fear of hitting the oncoming tree usually causes most people

out the steering input) which allows iithe tires to regain traction, before steering back to the original driving line.

OVERSTEER: Oversteer can be the scariest kind of skid for most people, but it’s also the frosting on the cake of driving for others. Quite simply, oversteer is related to understeer in that the maximum grip available for the rear tires have exceeded their available traction circle before the front tires, causing the rear of the car to “step out” and skid sideways in the opposite direction of the turn. I’m a driver that autocrosses and drives track events, and I can attest to the thrill of having the back end of a Porsche “step out” as it raced around a track. It’s what makes driving fun, dangerous, and can make driving very worthwhile. But, for regular street driving, it could also result in a very bad day, so don’t practice these techniques

on the way to the local Home Depot or Target! The main causes of an Oversteer skid are: 1. Entering a corner too fast 2.rAccelerating into a corner too aggressively 3. Braking into the corner or mid-corner 4. Lifting off the throttle mid-corner,

and / or 5. Poor car setup

increase the size of the rear tires’ traction circle. To increase the rear tire’s traction circle, you’ll need to increase the weight over the rear tires. You can accomplish this (in most cases) by maintaining or slightly increasing the amount of throttle input. This goes against most people’s natural instincts, which is to lift off the throttle and apply the brakes. That’s why the skid recovery techniques mentioned in this article must be practiced out on the track. The Porsche Driving School teaches the “CPR” technique (Correct, Pause and Recover), originated at the Bondurant Racing School.

The green line is the intended driving line. The red line shows the unintended “oversteer” skid path of a vehicle as the back end comes around.

How do you correct an Oversteer skid situation? Using the example above, imagine you enter into a corner a bit too fast, turn the wheel, and you gradually feel the back end of the car lose grip causing it to skid toward the outside of the turn. What do you do? Well again, the key to a proper recovery is all about weight control. If the back end of your Porsche has broken loose, you’ll need to

Step One – Correct. You correct the slide by steering into the skid, also known as counter steering. Keep the front wheels pointed in the direction you want to go. Depending on the circumstances, it may also help to get some weight to the front wheels, so easing up on the throttle ever so slightly (notice I didn’t say lift off the throttle!) may help your Porsche straighten and go in the intended direction. Step Two – Pause. After you’ve made the initial corrections, continue to look ahead to where you want to go. Pause and wait for the corrections to take effect and be ready for the car to react and settle into your inputs.

Step Three – Recover. At this point, you’ve caught the skid and the rear of the car has stopped sliding. You should be looking ahead to where you want to go, making small steering inputs in that direction as needed. Once the car has become settled, keep steering in the direction you want the car to go and gradually accelerate. As always, if these recovery skills are to be mastered, you must practice them in a safe environment. Our PCA-OCR offers several Drivers Education (DE) track events every year, and our Autocross program offers monthly events. No matter your level of experience, these programs will help make you a much better, faster and safer driver. Come on out! Watch, learn, and participate. It means “welcome” and “good day to you.” New 2017 PCA-OCR member Tim Downey decided to bring Pando along to French Polynesia for the trip of a lifetime. Pando visited many islands including Tahiti, Huahine, Bora Bora, Rangiroa and Moorea. The water and sea life were absolutely phenomenal. However, on land, Tim sure could have used a new Macan Turbo S! “I think it would be the perfect complement to giving Pando more culture around the world. So, it’s next on my list. “la orana!”

AUTO-X CORNER

July 9, 2017 PCA-OCR Autocross San Pedro, LA Outer Harbor Berth 46

Walter’s Porsche of Riverside 2017 Auto-X Championship Series Story by Bruce Powers, Photos by Paul Novotne PCA-OCR Autocross fortunately missed the sweltering heat of El Toro, and welcomed no less than eighteen (18!) new autocross participants to a beautiful day by the sea in San Pedro, CA.The sixth Event of the 2017 Walter’s Porsche of Riverside Autocross Championship Series took place at Berth 46 of the outer LA Harbor. With a light breeze and mostly sunny skies, the PCA-OCR members enjoyed a fantastic day of camaraderie, education and everything Porsche and Autocross. The setting, and 79 degree temp, was a far cry from what our SCCA brethren were experiencing -- sweltering in 113 degree heat on the runways of El Toro that Sunday! We take a brief moment from our Autocross recap to thank our 2017 Series Support Sponsors GMG, located in Santa Ana and MOMO of Italy. Allan Ward from GMG, the Event Day Sponsor in addition to Series Support Sponsor, was on hand to address the Porsche faithful and thank them for their support of GMG. He reminded them of GMG’s upcoming events and their scope of service. The Autocross Crew appreciates the support of all our sponsors and especially the commitment that GMG has made to the PCAOCR Autocross event over the years! 16 PANDO | September 2017

This event is all volunteer run, and just like all PCA-OCR events, it’s the people that make it fun and they happen to be driving Porsches! As I mentioned earlier, we had a season high of 18 new drivers to this PCA-OCR AX event; meaning, 18 instructors giving insight, teaching car handling skills, helping with course navigation and making sure all of the first-timers to our event have a fantastic day! A BIG thank you to all the PCA-OCR instructors and our Chief Driving Instructor that coordinates all the instruction and oversees the process. At each event, the instructors are pitching in to help the newbies to the Autocross scene and, for our PCA members to enjoy the fun they’ve been hearing or reading about in the Pando each month. The Instructors assist every newbie in a setting that is very non-threatening to their Porsche and very welcoming on a personal level. Part of the camaraderie that participants experience is not just the competition, but all the people helping out in the morning and the afternoon to produce the event, and then staying for the awards to cheer or razz their fellow competitors! Speaking of awards, all the

results are available online via the PCAOCR website on the Results tab. With the Pacific Ocean, a soft westerly breeze and boats sailing by in the background, one of our crew dubbed this the “Monaco of Autocross”. Whether it is the setting or the competition that inspires each member to put forth their best lap, the competition was fierce and fun. Adding to that, we had a strong local contingent pushing hard to compete with the PCA-OCR regulars making the fun a little more interesting. The Top Time of Day (TTOD) and the top spot in the BRI (Bench Racing Index) went to Orange Coast Region member Kurt Ressler with a time of 40.185 seconds. Kurt has left the ranks of the 911 rear engine based cars selling his 997, and gone over to the dark side in his mid-engine, Boxster Rigged Index (BRI) car, an early black 986. He just managed to beat out the likes of perennial TTOD winner and second fastest time of the day, Michael Oest (40.397), BRI 2016, Top Gun Erik Hagendijk (3rd fastest with a 41.989) and X class star Steve Abbott (4th fastest time of day: 42.389) Congrats to Kurt! On a similar note, I have to promote the High Performance Driving Education

articles written by our Autocross Chair Emeritus, Don Chapman. The past few months they’ve been featured in the Pando. The in-depth information is excellent, not only the physics, but the drawings to help visualize the words. If you didn’t see them, you can always access the Pando on-line, go back several issues, and you can read them from the beginning. I promise you will gain a greater understanding of performance driving in your Porsche!

Thank you again to our 2017 Autocross Championship Series Sponsor, Walter’s Porsche of Riverside, and our Series Support Sponsors and Event Day Sponsor, GMG. Experiencing the 62nd Annual

Porsche Parade in Spokane, Washington The Drive

T

he 62nd Annual Porsche Parade brought together a special group camaraderie focusing on passions and commonalities of the many participating Porschephiles’ likes, loves and even some challenges (we will get to the Spokane, Washington roads later!) While some people have a bucket list; other people make life pilgrimages and to me, the drive to Spokane, Washington for this year’s Parade, was indeed MY pilgrimage. This was my first Porsche Parade, and the decision to make the three day trek, or personal Porsche pilgrimage to Spokane, was a no brainer. I registered in the very first hour for the parade, which coincided with the very tail end of completing my Porsche C2S rebuild. I dropped my car off at Vision Motor Sports where Wayne put on some B16 Bilstein Coilovers. My kit was missing some parts, but Wayne was able to set the car up for me to drive. Without the PASM cables, I knew the ride would be a bit bumpy. Also, this would be the longest drive and test for my newly rebuilt 911. So, nervously about 9:30 p.m., I loaded up the car with my toolbox, some clothes

and off I went! I imagine every one of the 2500 plus attendees at the Parade felt the same anticipation and adrenalin I did as I came off the off-ramp onto the 91 freeway. I wanted to have smoother roads and less traffic, so I took the “scenic” route via the I-97 and I-395 through Nevada, Idaho, along the Oregon Trail and into Washington. I rested at the beginning of the Oregon Trail, thinking about what the early settlers must have faced during their journey west. No flat sixes or Turbos, how did they get through the trail? While I passed Nevada and into Idaho, it was over 110 degrees. The car had just been injected with new AC juice, so fortunately I didn’t feel a thing, and thankfully, the car didn’t overheat. There were some beautiful Nevada and Oregon scenery, and one of the highlights of the drive was on the edge of Idaho where the speed limit was a minimum 80 mph, so needless to say, the car got a very good workout “at speed”.

the crowd, but to my surprise, there were hundreds of passionate Porsche people with one common thought, to get some gear from the Goodie Store! As a first-timer, of course I wanted the standard goodies: Tee shirt, hat etc. However, the PCA Goodie Store missed a shipment, and everyone was advised they would have to wait until the next day. So, I scheduled myself for various welcome parties, banquets and auto / driving events. I went on the driving event to the local Ski Resort at Schweitzer Mountain. It was a beautiful drive, wonderful food and spectacular scenery.

This was the scene most of the drive, beautiful countryside and open roads, and the drive there was without incident with one possible exception. As I was entering Spokane, there was a pretty large deer we almost “met,” but he was no match for “blue magic” down the I-85 freeway. One PCA member was not so lucky, and he had a GT3! Upon arriving in Spokane, I checked into my room, and then went to get the complimentary car wash, which was a surprise since it was my first Parade but a really nice, special benefit.

The Parade is a weeklong marathon of excitement, eating, events and socializing. I would recommend being in shape for all of these things. Spokane, Washington is a lovely venue; however, the roads are very challenging, ok, downright horrible. Many of the attendees shared one pothole story after another. In all fairness to Spokane, they did have a very heavy winter snow season, so the locals admitted the heavy runoff contributed to the many potholes. With my suspension set to firm, I had a rather intimate time with the roads.

The Parade

I spent a lot of time watching Autocross. Which was located the North Quest Casino just outside of Spokane near a local airport. I had not done autocross with our PCA-OCR Club, and was very interested to see how it’s done. The course was very small and in the Casino parking lot. It was about a 40 second course. I was really taken with the way the mid-engine cars were cutting through the course. One car ran the course in about 38

It was really a tiring drive. After resting, I got up the next morning as excited as a kid on Christmas! I pulled out my schedule to see where the day would lead me. Like any self-respecting Californian, it was off to the Goodie Store to get some gear. I arrived at the Grand Hotel by 8:00 a.m. thinking I’d beat 22 PANDO | September 2017

seconds and the winning car was a Cayman, clocking in at about 36 seconds! I watched this for over 2 hours, then walked over to the Casino for a buffet lunch. It wasn’t pricey, and the fish dishes were fresh and very tasty. On the way back through the Casino, my attention was caught by a shiny object with a white ball. I felt it my duty as a visitor to investigate, and after a thorough review, it appeared to be some type of hypnotic object appeased only by green currency. Fortunately, after my gambling adventure, I arrived safely back at the Autocross session, then headed back to the hotel for another banquet. There was also the Porsche Kids RC racing which was quite entertaining.

The Ride Home

I met many wonderful Porsche enthusiasts and just people who like getting together. At one of the banquets, our Club won The Best Newsletter out of the whole PCA. Now that is something! I was very proud, and think I told everyone I spoke to that that was my Club’s Newsletter. The Parade of Porsches was spectacular. It was a massive caravan. What a great feeling to have the crowds wave at you as we drove through the city. It was a real exciting Parade! The city was quite gracious and everyone was warm and inviting. What a blast! At the conclusion, I wanted to get back on the road since I knew I had a three day drive back home to Orange County. I skipped the last banquet. For any new Parade folks, I would say one of the most important items is to familiarize yourself with the Hospitality Board. It’s a gold mine of instructions, notices and tickets. I left Spokane on Saturday afternoon anticipating staying over in Bend, Oregon and then onto San Jose, then back to Anaheim. Well, it didn’t quite work out that way. Just 27 miles outside Madres, Oregon, I had a flat tire. This was very scary as it was about 11:20 p.m. at night on a pitch black road with no lights. I didn’t have a spare, but I remembered seeing a barn just a few yards down the road. I began walking toward it being careful not to get into the road when I stepped into a large sink hole. I got out of the hole and headed back to the car and began praying. Well, even if you’re not religious, prayer

changes things. I looked up and there was a tow truck stopping on the other side of the road! He towed me into town and dropped my car off at a tire shop. He said the shop may not be open on Sunday. I was able to find a California connection that helped me get a tire and have it installed around 2:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Thankfully, I was on my way home to OC. Thanks to Arturo’s Wheels and Tires and his future mother-in-law at the Shell station for all their help. The ride back was easy. I stopped in San Jose and the next morning on Monday, July 17 (my birthday), I was at home by 3:00 p.m. Memories of this trip will last forever and I can’t wait until next year’s Parade. Although this time, I’m seriously considering saving my pennies and have my car shipped.

One night in. Madres, Oregon, after flat tire.

356’s Other Dinosaurs : Story by Fred Aikins

and

How I became a Porsche Guy

Looking back, my father’s plan was daring, maybe even foolhardy, considering the more relaxed parenting standards of the late 60’s. Dad had taken an advertising job in San Francisco that required a move from our suburban Chicago home. Our worldly possessions and station wagon would go on the moving van. Mom (very pregnant with my little brother) and my younger sister would fly ahead of us. So far, so good.

Day three took us northwest to the Great Salt Lake, where Dad let me go swimming so I could see how buoyant saltwater makes you compared to fresh water. We motored across the salt flats with no complaint from the little yellow 356C and into Nevada stopping only for meals. Toward Reno, Dad stopped at a casino to get some coffee, but told me I had to wait in the car. When I asked why, he explained that kids were not allowed in the casino because of gambling. Once I understood, I gave him a quarter to put into a slot machine for me. Dad, thinking this was a good opportunity to teach me a valuable lesson about gambling, agreed to play it for me. His lesson backfired as he soon returned with $6.25 that he’d won with the quarter!

What makes me look back and question Dad’s sanity was the final piece. He would drive our Champagne Yellow 1964 Porsche 356C from Chicago to the Bay Area, with me, a hyperactive dinosaurobsessed six-year-old, as his co-pilot. Two thousand miles across the Great Plains, and two mountain ranges in an air-cooled, nonA/C sports car during the hottest part of the At the start of the trip, the 356C summer. Madness, but that was Dad’s plan. Our luggage, such as it was, fit in the front cargo area. Dad had a tool roll, including a spare fan belt (thankfully not needed). The rear parcel shelf was set up as my “nest,” with pillows and a blanket or two. I would either ride there or in the front seat or, occasionally, in the front passenger footwell (surprisingly comfortable for a six-year-old).

was Dad’s car, I liked it, but it was his. Somehow, over the course of the journey, it became “our” car, a shared passion to be cared for.

So, it was that one late summer morning Dad and I set off in his 356C, and pointed the nose west. The first day we crossed Illinois, Iowa, and then into Nebraska with no drama. The 1600cc flat-four happily rasping its way through mile-after-mile of endless cornfields. Nothing but corn as far as the eye could see, punctuated by the occasional red barn or white silo. Day two saw us cross Nebraska and into Colorado, less corn, more grain, but still endless miles of flat terrain, hardly sports car territory. However, once we got past Denver and into the foothills of the Rockies, the drive became more interesting. As we climbed, I remember watching Dad working the pedals and steering the four-speed, always choosing the right gear for the upcoming turn or grade. I was fascinated. Finally, we reached what I thought would be the highlight of the trip, Dinosaur National Monument on the Colorado-Utah border. For a dinosaurobsessed boy, this was heaven! We spent a couple hours there, bought a few books and souvenirs, and then headed west again. 26 PANDO | September 2017

Past Reno, Dad pressed on into the Sierra Nevada range, running the 356C up and down through the gears and taking the turns faster than many of the lumbering sedans and trucks around us. All of a sudden, I became aware that our car was somehow different, and more special, than the other cars on the road. I began to appreciate the design and engineering of the 356C, and Dad’s skill in driving it. As we cleared the Sierra foothills, Dad made the command decision to continue onto the Bay Area, in spite of the late hour and his fatigue. We made it to our Bay Area destination in the wee hours of the following morning. The little yellow 356C hadn’t missed a beat in 2,000 miles.

At the start of the trip, the 356C was Dad’s car, I liked it, but it was his. Somehow, over the course of the journey, it became “our” car, a shared passion to be cared for. After that, I became much more “car aware” amassing quite a collection of Matchbox, Hot Wheels, Corgi and plastic model cars, but always with a special affinity for Porsches. A few years later, Dad replaced the yellow 356C with a light ivory 356C from the estate of a member of our church. He and I spent a couple weekends swapping parts from the yellow 356C to the white one. Today, that same white 356C resides in my garage where my sons and I are restoring it for the next generation, and more journeys to come. Thanks, Dad, for taking me along as your co-pilot and for turning me into a Porsche guy.

Once we got past Denver and into the foothills of the Rockies, the drive became more interesting. As we climbed, I remember watching Dad working the pedals and steering the four-speed, always choosing the right gear for the upcoming turn or grade. I was fascinated.

Visiting the 356 Club

Story and Photos by Marcia Salans

On July 22, 2017, framed by beautiful blue skies, lush green

lawns and abundant trees, the 356 Club of Southern California held their 31st Annual Concours, for the first time, in the City of Huntington Beach’s Central Park. In addition to the Concours new location, the 356 Club continued their tradition of graciously extending an open display invitation to all Porsches; resulting in an energy filled, dramatic display of the entire Porsche line up of old and newer Porsches including model 912’s, 911’s, Boxsters, Turbos, Panamera, Cayenne, Macan, 917 and 918’s. Judging focused on 356’s in a wide variety of classes including Unrestored, Full Concours, Street Concours, Wash and Shine; and special awards for Best Display and People’s Choice. It was a wonderful day filled with spectacular cars, conversational groups sitting on the grass exchanging their unique car’s Porsche history, families snapping photos and appreciative attendees mingling with owners, all with the commonality with the love of Porsche.

The

Origin of the Species : Story by Jim Marshall

1974 914-4 : 2.0 liter 90hp Type 4 VW engine. The 914 was a

father/son restoration project in 1992. Son, Jon Marshall, driving along with author’s wife, Joy, at a PCA event in Cambria, CA 1993.

The 914 has been both maligned and coveted over the years

by owners and automotive journalists alike. The 914 series was, by all accounts, a sales success (nearly 119,000 total) and provided a first step for many into the world of Porsche ownership. However, over the years, rumors persisted that the 914 series had its origins somewhere outside of Porsche. Was it a design by BMW and sold to Porsche? Was it a VW design to replace the Karmann Ghia; or, was it from “Pininfarina” as some auto magazines suggested? In 1994, the Porsche factory held a celebration event honoring the 25th anniversary of the 914 series. Several of us from PCA, as well as many from all over Europe made the trek. Months after the event, one of our members asked our event host, Porsche engineer Jorg Austen, about the true design origins of the 914. Here is a transcript of his answer which we received as a teletype letter:

32 PANDO | September 2017

Letter Transcript dated : Weissach, March 29, 1995 It was nice to hear from sunny California again, while we still have snowstorms here in Germany. Our press department in Zuffenhausen did research on your request as to the origins of the 914 series. P. Farrina had nothing to do with the design of the 914. Also, the Gugelot Design (with BMW drive line) had nothing to do with the design of the 914. The Porsche chief designer was Wolfgang Eyb and the man who was responsible for the road tests was Dr. Reiner Engles and he was my boss! The beginning of the “914” idea was a conversation between Heinrich Nordhoff of VW and Ferry Porsche. VW wanted a sports car with a VW driveline and Porsche thought by using the 2000 cc six cylinder Porsche engine to offer a “cheaper” Porsche. Both companies started between 1964-1966 with the development and the contracts for this mid-engine sports car. The design was completely done in the Porsche studio in Zuffenhausen, where also all drawings for the body, suspension, etc were made.

I myself was responsible for the clutch, transmission, and drive shafts. We drove the two models, four and six cylinders, many thousands of kilometers on highways, mountain roads and on the high speed test field. Also, here in Weissach was the Porsche test track where I myself drove the 914 cars on bad condition roads days and nights. I remember a day when we arrived in Austria with a 914 in “camouflage” at a toll road (Grossglockner mountain road) when one of the employees there believed the car was a Mercedes. He said “go on, we will put this car on the Mercedes team toll bill” We were proud our camouflage was perfect! With my best regards I remain Jorg Austen

For the Love of Porsche Story & Photos by Bart Zandbergen

34 PANDO | September 2017

As heard in the infamous “Risky Business” movie on the lips of Tom Cruise, “Porsche, there is no substitute!”

me $700 which I paid back monthly. It took me until 1979 to dial in my VW masterpiece to the way I wanted it.

When I was 10 years old in 1970, I remember falling in love with the Porsche 911. There was something about the smooth lines and roaring air-cooled rear engine that made my heart flutter. Later that same year, the classic movie “LeMans,” with legend Steve McQueen really helped to fuel my love of the technical aspects of Porsche, as well as racing. That’s when I knew one day I would own a Porsche. (Little did I know I would actually end up being the proud owner of a few!) Thus, a lifelong obsession was born.

I remember being in the high school locker room while all of the guys were talking about either there souped-up Camaro, Firebird, El Camino or Mini Truck, while I had dreams of my future 911 Porsche!

At 16, when I was able to purchase my first car, while the desire for Porsche was there, you guessed it, the budget was not. So I got the next best thing, a VW bug! I tried my best to make it a Porsche by adding 2.0 liter alloy wheels taken from a 914, dual carburetors and dual exhaust. It was definitely a fun car, and certainly fueled my Porsche desire. I just needed the budget to match my vision! I purchased my VW in 1976 for $1,400. My parents loaned

Well, like many of you PCA-OCR Members, time went by, college, first job, marriage and a few babies, and a string of very BORING cars. Until finally, in 1994, I was able to purchase my very first Porsche. A black-on-black 1982 911 Carrera SC with 45K miles. I LOVED that car. It was beautiful. That’s when I joined the PCA-OCR and got into Concours. I always brought my young son Christian with me, where he too, became an enthusiast. We would attend clinics and really enjoyed getting the car ready for show. We actually got first place in our first show in Anaheim! By 2004, I was itching for something new and something convertible. So after much

deliberation, I sold my 911SC (totally wish I would have kept it in the collection) with 175K miles and bought a 1999, 911 996 Cabriolet, in triple black. It was quite an adjustment going from air-cooled to water-cooled, but we had so much fun in that car. Again, I upgraded the wheels, sound system, exhaust and seats, turning it into my exact vision at the time. In 2016, I got the itch again. My love for Porsche got even stronger with the new 997 and then the 991 body style, and I knew I had to have one. So, I was able to purchase a 2015 911 GTS Cabriolet. And you guessed it, triple black! So far, no modifications because it has EVERYTHING. It was truly like being in a different car (in a good way) from my 996. It is the most remarkable work of art, and this time, Christian did not let me get away with getting rid of that 996 as I did the SC. He is now the proud owner of said triple black 996! Figured we would keep it, and we’re truly a passionate “Porsche Family.”

RICE’S

Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice

FALL is in the air, and none too soon for most of us. In the news there is a rumor that Porsche is dropping GTP Le Mans and getting into Electric race cars? Is it true? It would be wise I suppose to see how far 100% electronic race cars can work. If anyone, any company, can prove the merits of 100% electric racing, who better than Porsche to do it? I would love to see a GT-‘E car’ more with a 911 chassis and body werk! Imagine 50-50% weight balance, 4-wheel motorgenerators, with that lovely aerodynamic shape. What do you think? OUR NEW PANORAMA Nr.724 (July 2017) I noticed in LETTERS some suggestions that I have heard for years from Porsche owners here, and from readership. Primarily, within the statements of “I (we) think the magazine should refocus on the cars we actually own and drive. We all like to learn about an occasional new special, performance, hot rod, and or customized Porsche, but, not necessarily make them a focus point.” (And in my opinion, an advertisement for them.) We like to know something about the “eye candy,” but not make them a focal point. Why not more stories about owners who use and live with their Porsches, such as July’s article on Michael Hammond’s famous number, the black 1967 911S. Many of us ‘grey hair 911 pushers,’ followed Michael and his Nr.5 around the tracks of California’s time trials series. And how about doing features on how owners use the products that are advertised in the Panorama? Another point: Why not do articles on using the products that are advertised in Panorama? And how they

‘Drop Dead Georgeous’ why not a 911 GT sedan, or 2+2

actually work including the good, or the bad, or even the ugly, and why? Another point is the prices of Porsches. We can’t do much about that except some information on smart purchasing and / or and how to find deals on Porsches, if that is possible? The Panorama is for membership, not a mouth piece for the factory, right? I have to hope the submitted and printed LETTERS is a sign of the editorship’s interest in what is actually on membership’s minds these days? I love our new editor ROB SAS’ approach, thus far. Also new, will be the “call out boxes” for additional details and information about the technicalities of some articles, available on-line. An excellent Idea. Afterthought: Panorama was my #2 magazine for Porsche information for a long time. That other P. magazine was #1. Then that editor, well, it was Pete Stout, ended up coming aboard Panorama as our editor!

That really made my day and many major significant changes, all of them great, in my opinion, and Pano. was #1. Then Peter went for a long walk? And Pano. Kind of went slightly off track, but now it is looking better than ever. PS: Pete went out on his own making a very high dollar (instant collector item thing) magazine of his own: “000”. It appears (to me) as a mega-dollar subscription for the high roller crowd. NO thanks anyway. However, Panorama now seems to be on a very good track. Another score point I have seen lately is the over-rated interest in the “outthe-door instant collectables.” To me these are just copies, just imitations, and although they make huge profits, the car is only an image of the real thing. It seems many forgot that Porsche earned their reputation, the hard way, and so did the Alois Ruf and his CTR, but that is just my opinion. September 2017 | PANDO 39

Fig 2. 8.0 x 1.25 x 12 mm steel lock nuts = easy!

That’s my 25 cents worth. What’s yours?

QUESTION : I have a 1983 930 turbo and do some of my own work. I have a valve adjustment coming due soon and always have a difficult time getting the left bottom valve cover off. I have to take off the waste gate valve to get at the valve cover and remove it. It is especially hard to get a 13 mm wrench or socket on the nuts to get it off: ANSwer: The Lower cam covers are a bugger to remove if they do not have the rear top part shaved down to ease it off, as the factory did on later 930 Turbos. This enables the “valve cover” to be removed over the cam housing studs and pass over the waste gate. This is a factory modification that you can do when you have the cover off. The waste gate nuts are standard 8.0 x 1.25 mm threads. HOWEVER, the nut’s hex size should be 12 mm, not 13 mm! PET states only “M8”. Some mechanics put 13 mm nuts back on. I see many of those not fully seated because it is near impossible to get a narrow 13 mm end wrench or socket on those 13 mm nuts and tightened down! Then you end up with an exhaust leak. So try a metric hardware store for M 8.0 x 1.25 x 12 mm lock nuts. (See Fig.2) And, while you can adjust Nr.1 & Nr. 2 exhaust valve clearance with the waste gate installed, if you have 12 mm nuts on it, it is so easy to remove it. 40 PANDO | September 2017

Fig 3. The GOOD, the OK, and the UGLY! WEHRLE is the best of the type.

Then you have a good view of the valve and adjustment is much easier. PS always slop a lot of gold anti-seize on the Waste Gate stud threads before reinstalling the 12 mm nuts.

QUESTION : What kind of red relays should I look for my Porsche? What bugs me about Porsche, is their part numbers do not number their own modifications. Different vendor suppliers, upgrades, with a different part number, or prefix. Unlike Aviation, where differing types of manufacturer or modifications MUST be numbered within the original part number. These “Porsche” relays ALL have the same darn part number! This, in my opinion, is TOTALLY unsatisfactory, to be polite! I know the “Made in China” ones can NOT be trusted! WEHRLE is the best of the type. (See Fig.3) WEHRLE is a known German brand. I know they are now sought after like collector items. It is not vanity. It is a necessity, if you value safety. PS. I would trust the lower AMP rated WEHRLE, black relay, over the red “Made in China” relay! NEW: As we know Porsche has tried many new ideas on the 911 as it seems to be the ultimate development and prototype car, of all time. The 911 housed the first 4-cam, air-cooled, 6 cylinder engine. The first with water-cooled 4 valve 4-cam engine (935/80, and 959). The first turbocharged

production, road, and racing car in the world. The E-drive Hybrid, and it still is an OVERWHELMING success today! Now comes a newer version. SEE spy photo Fig 4. Progress report: UpGrading the 19741989 electrical system to 1990, C-2 and 993 standards: This endeavor was not a fun job. It was in fact, darn difficult as I sketched and drew many wiring diagrams trying to find something simple, logical, compact, and have it all fit within the Porsche layout and space available. The C-2 and 993 upgraded to a 944 type electrical box called, “Central Electrical” (CEL). This box is installed on the Right side, front trunk and has all the relays, fuses, laid out in logical, clean and simple grids arrangement. It is easy to look for a relay or a fuse. Also, everything is enclosed in the box so no wires, fuses, connection terminals, or other bare live wires are close to any metal as the earlier 911s. ALL electrics are enclosed in the box with quick to remove latches for the cover. (See Fig 5. C-2 & 993 “CEL” Central Electrics) This could be a very nice upgrade, but it is not a simple upgrade for any 911. And while it would be worth doing, it would also require replacing all fuses and all relay terminal wire ends with female blade terminal ends. We’re talking about 72-100 wires to be possibly lengthened, marked to the correct color codes, then bundled to each relay and each fuse.

Fig 7. 12 Gauge ATC Fuse Holder Box In-Line AWG Wire Copper 12V 30A Blade Standard Plug Socket. Amazon available.

Fig 8. Pump below is a new and LARGER Fuel Pump (0-580-254-044-M14-Bosch).

Then when each Relay is switched “ON” and power flows through each relay and on to Fuel Pump I and Fuel Pump II.

Many wires would need to be completely re-routed as well. Then, too, the CEL box itself needs a place to fit? It is big, rather large actually, and that’s another major job in itself.

Fuel Pump II, in the rear of the 930, also powers the Control Pressure Regulator, Auxiliary Air Regulator, and the 12 volt vacuum timer-switch for cold running ignition advance.

Since I wanted to make an UpGrade that would be possible for a capable 911 owner, this particular CEL box would require more careful time consuming skills than I think necessary to accomplish what is needed.

That is a lot of amperage. This is a safety item for any 930 Turbo and especially with the larger, higher capacity Bosch “044” fuel Pump. (See Fig. 8)

This upgrade, I determined, was not the way to go. Instead, I have done several other progressive UpGrades. In steps. (See Fig. 6) Number 1. Is a quick fix. To replace the low amperage fuses with a blade ATC Fuse. (See Fig 7.) For the 930 Turbo you need 2 of these. One for Fuel Pump I, and the other ATC fuse for Fuel Pump II. This eliminates the small fuse contacts of the factory fuse panel for the fuel pumps.

Fig 6. Rough sketch of progressions

The factory runs battery power to Fuse S-16 then to Fuel Pump RELAY I, and on to fuel Pump RELAY II. THIS IS A HUGE LOAD ON ONE SMALL FUSE!

BTW: The “44” is a fantastic fuel pump specified for the 911 GT, GT-2 and all race cars. However, it requires a greater electrical demand! From my experience and in my opinion, THE ORIGINAL 911 930 FUSE AND RELAY SYSTEM ARE NOT SAFE TO USE WITH THIS PUMP! Next month the simplest and safest UpGrade to fully insure reliability. What’s In Your Garage? What’s In My Garage

Story by Dick Sartor/ Photo by Marcia Salans Over the years I’ve owned three Porsches and recently, after much searching, I’ve found my fourth and final one! Four months ago, I made up my mind I wanted a Cayman S. On a daily basis I talked to people, searched on-line, contacted dealerships, researched the Pando, Panorama, local and national ads. I was looking for a Cayman S, preferably after 2010, reasonable mileage and in a unique color. One evening, I was looking on our Porsche national website and I found it - a 2011 Cayman S in Macadamia Brown located in Brookings, Oregon! It was a long process, many emails and phone calls; but I “pulled the trigger”, flew from John Wayne to Seattle then Portland. Then changed airlines to fly to Crescent City, CA. I ubered 22 miles to the hotel, was picked up by the car’s owner (in a jeep) who drove me to his home - AND THERE IT WAS! I had a fantastic time driving back to California - by way of the coast - and enjoyed how it held and handled the road - great overall performance and boy, does it take turns aggressively. It’s a fantastic Porsche and I’m very happy! Be featured in “What’s In Your Garage?”! Send your photo(s) and information to Marcia Salans at msalans@socal.rr.com
