Any resemblance to the car of your dreams is purely intentional. It wears its heritage proudly on its sleeves. And fenders. And roofline. Experience the Porsche Macan S. A 340-horsepower twin-turbo V6, PDK double-clutch transmission and active all-wheel drive with Porsche Traction Management for maximum grip in varying driving conditions. All standard. The Macan S is built around our defining belief that every drive should be unforgettable. And every car should be a sports car. Dream fulfillment begins with a test drive. Porsche. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Barry Michaels

SOUL ELECTRIFIED.

S

oul Electrified. Perhaps this is the first time you’ve come across the tagline, but comments from PCNA’s President & CEO Klaus Zellmer at the 63rd Porsche Parade suggests we’re all going to become familiar with the tagline soon. According to Klaus, all Porsche models have something in common: They have a soul. That is to say they have a certain feel you get as a driver as soon as you get behind the wheel. You likely have surmised Herr Zellmer is alluding to the likelihood Porsche will quickly transition to electric power, but the soul of the cars will remain the same. Porsche marketing has described the 600 horsepower Tycan (pronounced “tie-khan”) as the first electric sports car with the soul of a Porsche. Reportedly the vehicle is targeted to fill the gap between the 911 and the Panamera, which will be an appealing offering for some of us. According to Klaus, Porsche expects fifty percent of new street-legal Porsches sold in 2025 to be allelectric, and perhaps one hundred percent by 2030. Can that be? I don’t know, but then how many of us would have thought a few years ago that seventy percent of Porsches sold in 2017 would be SUVs? In any case, Porsche expects strong interest in the Tycan and with production scheduled for 2020 PCNA has already opened an interest/ deposit registration process in coordination with dealers across the US and Canada.

FL. Parade 2020 will be much closer to OCR and will be held in the greater Palm Springs area. Please remember, Rennsport Reunion VI is this month and is expected to draw a record 72,000 attendees. Several OCR members will attend Treffen Banff this month so you can expect a report in a future issue of PANDO. The Spring Treffen (April) will be held in Santa Barbara, while the Fall 2019 Treffen will be held in Woodstock, Vermont. In addition to PCA national activities, your club offers a wide variety of region activities for you to enjoy. Please consult the event section of our website to keep aware of newly posted activities. If you have a great idea for an activity you think others would enjoy, let the appropriate committee chair or Board member know, and we will see what we can do. Above all, get out and drive. The road awaits!

People. Porsches. Passion. Looking Forward to What Lies Ahead.

Most if not all of us have seen pictures of the Tycan (aka Mission e), but it was fun to see the prototype up close at Parade. Speaking of Parade, it was a great time. PCA holds the Porsche Parade each year, so mark your calendars now. Parade 2019 will be held the third week of July in Boca Raton,

Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington

WINNING

The racing life of Paul Newman

by Matt Stone and Preston Lerner, published by Motorbooks, Minneapolis, MN.. If you are a fan of Paul Newman, the race car driver, this book is for you. If you prefer your Paul Newman as a Hollywood Actor and Gentleman Race-team Owner, maybe this book will change your mind. In any event, it is a profusely illustrated great read, albeit a bit dis-jointed because of the profusion of personal anecdotes and testimonials inserted into the text. Mario Andretti’s foreword to this book describes Paul Newman as a colorful character, bigger than life but trying to be extraordinarily ordinary. The stories and personal commentaries collected from a multitude of individuals, both the famous and the unknown, paint a picture of a guy everyone would like to have known. Having face time with Paul Newman is no longer possible, this book is the next best thing. Divided into five chapters (plus a brief ‘Coda,’ two appendices and a comprehensive index in micro-type), WINNING tells the story of Paul Newman’s automotive oriented life. Personal commentaries by some 50 people who had interfaced with Paul, are interspersed in the text. The first and fourth chapters deal with Paul’s involvement in movies. First is Winning which honed but did not really create his interest in race driving. It did provide him with special schooling in race driving which was intended to help the movie and no doubt helped his competitive driving career. The fourth chapter deals with Newman’s involvement in the movie Cars, the careful selection of Newman as 6 PANDO | September 2018

the voice for Doc Hudson, a character with a variety of forms of civic involvement masking a history in motor racing, a situation nicely mimicking Paul Newman’s life at that point. The premiere of the movie at Charlotte Motor Speedway was a truly unique event for Hollywood. Chapter two provides a great deal of detail about his experiences as a race driver and he did have an extensive career both as an ‘amateur’ and as a ‘pro’ race driver. No tabulation is given as to the various ‘classes’ of vehicles he raced, but he raced many makes (including Porsche) in almost every imaginable closed-wheel and openwheel racing series imaginable, except F1 and IndyCar. A large part of Chapter 2 is devoted to Paul’s days running in ‘ordinary’ SCCA events. He spent many more years and won many more races (even National Championships), as one-of-the-boys in Club Racing, than this reviewer had been aware. Chapter three deals with Paul’s ups and downs as a race team owner or co-owner,

and the many prominent motor racing figures he interfaced with or employed. It is made clear that his teams were successful because of his devotion to the sport, and his hands-on participation in every aspect of the racing programs. Chapter five gives insight into Newman’s penchant for having ‘sleeper’ beetles and Volvo station wagons. There is also more movie involvement - the TV Documentary Once Upon a Wheel, and serving as narrator for the IMAX Super Speedway, and Dale about Dale Earnhardt. WINNING is soft bound with 176, 8x10-1/2-inch matte pages, including 172 color and 28 black and white illustrations. It should be available from your favorite book seller (ask for it), or for $14.39 from https://www.quartoknows. com/Motorbooks.

Parade 2018

Lake of the Ozarks F

or those of you new to PCA, Porsche Parade is staged annually by PCA–National and is one of the most important Porsche events held in the USA/Canada. Attended by club members, guests and sponsors it essentially is our annual national convention. Club members from all across North America come together for this extravaganza to participate in a week of competitive, social and tour events designed to facilitate the enjoyment of driving Porsche cars. For many club members Parade has become their annual summer vacation. It provides them with an opportunity to see new parts of the country as well as to visit with PCA friends that they only see once a year. Some OCR members have been to more than thirty Parades. In prior years we have driven one of our Porsches to Parade, but this year our schedule wouldn’t accommodate the extra time so we flew into Kansas City, rented a car, and drove to Osage Beach. All we’ll say about that is the tours would have been more fun in a Porsche than in a Chevy Malibu. Tours are typically routed on twisty back roads perfect for enjoying a Porsche.

Story and Photos by Denise Michaels September 2017 | PANDO 15

We left Orange County in a heat wave and arrived

in Missouri at around the same temperature but with more humidity. The climate did not dampen our spirits however. I mean what can be better than spending a week with other Porsche people doing what Porsche people do. We arrived at Tan-Tar-A Resort at midnight as an ambulance was leaving the resort. Tan-Tar-A is a big resort so a security officer helped us find our room. The security man told us “one of ours” had just been taken to the hospital. The man was 92 years old and had driven to Porsche Parade from Spokane, WA. When asked if he was hydrated he replied, “I only use water in my scotch.” I think he was fine other than being dehydrated. The Concours d’Elegance was beautiful along the resorts golf course. Highlights were: 1951 Porsche 356 Coupe: Color - silver. - 1 of the first 600 Porsche’s built 1965 904 Carrera GTS: Color - silver. - Just plain beautiful 1973 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring: Color - Lilac 1974 Porsche 911: Color - Hell Grün (green) 1995 Porsche 968: Color - Speed Yellow The other two impressive cars that I saw were the Pink Pig #92 (LeMans winning GT Pro car) and the all-electric Taycan. The Taycan name translates as “lively young horse” referencing the center of the Porsche crest.

As with every Porsche Parade there was always something to do and the ten days we spent at the resort passed too quickly. Seminars, tours, rallies, autocross, wine and beer tasting, concours, TechTactics, and last but not least the Parade of Porsche’s. This year the Parade of Porsche’s started in a literal downpour! Think thunder, lightning, and heavy rain. The rain was something we will not soon forget. I did feel sorry for the Carrera GT that did not have its roof on! Barry and I went on a tour of the Budweiser Clydesdale Breeding Farm. A wonderful facility where the Clydesdales are really pampered. I would love to have a massage daily as they do. Barry and I received trophies for the Gimmick Rally. The theme was Getting Your Kicks on Route 66. It took us 9 hours to complete and we missed the wine tasting, but we finished the rally! One stopping place on the rally was at a store called Uranus. There were t-shirts for sale that said, “fudge packed in Uranus”. Enough said. I am pleased to announce that OCR won the PCA National Newsletter Competition! 1st place! Kudos to Marcia Salans and the Pando Team for their expertise and hard work. Next year 2019 Porsche Parade will be in sunny Boca Raton, FL, and 2020 will be in sunnier Palm Springs area. See you there.

Story by Denny Asbury Photos by Denny & Monica Asbury

24PITS HOURS IN THE

I was 20 when I was at my first LeMans race. I remember seeing the first two hours with all the Ford GT40s breaking. Then, well, some Australian guys and I got to enjoying maybe a little too much drinking, and by the time I woke up, the event was over.

Now, fast forward - the 2018 LeMans race was maybe the most incredible weekend of my life! We were guests of General Motors and SiriusXM radio with the BEST credential/passes you “can’t buy.” Our passes gave us complete access to the Corvette pits. To get into the working pits you have to pass by a guard at the back entry, then you walked past hundreds of mounted tires ready for the battle, past the heating ovens and then you pass about 10 tech guys reviewing data on computer screens. Now you are in the “live” garage where the cars are kept before entering the track. There are about 20 pit crew working on the two cars #63, and #64. Surprisingly, everyone is nice and polite and we have complete access to everything in the garage. Before the race, we were allowed to stroll along the hot pit lane and we talked to the crew of the Gulf Porsche which was pitted on our right. The highlight for me was the Corvette pit stops. We could hang out in the executive suite that had windows directly over the hot pit enabling us to witness all of the intense action. We all looked for the flagman to walk out to the hot lane, “a car was coming in.” In a few seconds, the flagger placed the banner on the ground and immediately a Corvette stopped at the mark. The engine fell silent, the inboard jacks lifted the car and 8 crew attacked the car from every side. The driver was yanked out of the cockpit and the relief driver attacked the space like a snake on steroids. It was totally silent, only the sound of shoes racing around the car, no one said a word. When the flagger saw the action was complete he raised the flag to release the car. The big V8 roared to life with an ear-splitting blast that shook your chest, three seconds of clutch slipping and the monster was gone. All was quiet again. YO-YO Rallye Story and Photos by Glenn Billings and Larry Moore

sually, June gloom carries over into July, but temperatures in the low eighties and blue skies greeted the enthusiastic competitors for the July 1, 2018 PCA-OCR “Yo -Yo” Rallye behind the 17th Street Grill in Tustin, California.

Along with the route instructions and photos, each Porsche gets a control card on which to write down the answers to the 23 questions. The winner is determined by the most correct answers. Questions like, “how many rail road crossings, overpasses or bridges, cul de sacs or dead ends encountered on your journey.” And the photos you spot along the way are answered by the route number. There were over 60 route commands, and none of this is in order. It’s random. You can go for two miles and put two or three answers on your control card and then go 20 miles and not find one answer or photo. That’s what is so unnerving. As a driver and navigator, you start asking yourselves, “Are we lost?”

Due to the Holiday traffic on Sunday, Pacific Coast Highway got a little congested, but once off Highway 1, Larry had us negotiating the tiny back roads of Laguna Beach. When we reached 3rd street and Mermaid, the steepness of the drop was so severe, visions of Steve McQueen’s Mustang in “Bullet” entered my head. After going straight down the incline and a few instructions later, we came across the appropriately named High street, which is extremely straight-up steep. Up and down, up and down we go, and you start realizing why the name of the rallye was so apt. Once back on Pacific Coast Highway heading north, you could enjoy the ocean views while still being apprehensive about your mission. About eighteen miles later, once getting through the crowded Laguna Beach area, the drive eases a bit once we reach Newport Beach. Turning right on Dover we went alongside the Back Bay on the right to the John Wayne airport on our left. Heading north on Von Karman, the end was in sight. Five minutes later we were right back at our original starting point! Perhaps another yo-yo term?! You go out, loop around and come back. Finishing at the 17th Street Grill, we turned in our control cards, with all the bridges counted (10), railroads crossed (1) and dead ends totaled (3) and photos added up.

It’s a real team effort. The driver not only has to follow the traffic laws but also follow the route. The driver’s eyes are not only on the road but also scanning on the scenery matching the photo to the sight. As a navigator, you`re the “brains” of the two responsible for the mileage, writing answers, figuring out hints, clues, tricks; all the while relaying orders to the driver.

Having a good run in their 2008 Porsche Cayman S was Julie Hustings and Jeremy Huff who finished second. They were sandwiched between two Boxster’s taking first and third. Congratulations to bronze medalists David Hoella and Marita Fabros, for their third-place finish. There was a tie for fourth, and three didn’t complete the route.

So, resetting our odometers back to zero, members lined up and single file at 30 second intervals. Boxster’s, Caymans, Carrera’s, and some older 911s all left by 9:30 a.m. for the three-hour tour. After a drive through some residential and commercial areas of Tustin (where some photos were confirmed) the rallye took us through an enjoyable drive around Santiago Canyon, where none, if any, clues occurred. From there, we drove to Antonio Parkway, heading southwest and dropping down to the Pacific Ocean to Dana Point.

It’s exciting to get these Porsches out on the road, competing with one another, and enjoying the after-rallye conversations while having lunch. The long hours put in by Rallye Master Larry Moore is very well received and plans are in the making for a January 2019 Gimmick Rallye. Come out and have some real fun and support PCA-OCR’s Club efforts!

At the 8:30 a.m. Drivers Meeting, prior to sending us out on our 70-mile trek throughout Orange County, Rallye Master Larry Moore reviewed the rules and answered questions. Adding to the fun, we discovered about half of the participants had never been on a rallye, so it would be a new fun experience for those first-timers!

First Drive 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 Story and Photos by Albert Alan Aizin

“The 911 GT3 was first introduced in 1999. As with Porsche’s previous 911 RS models, the GT3 was focused on racing, and as such, lacked any items of luxury which added unnecessary weight. The sound deadening was almost completely removed, as were the rear seats, rear loud speakers, sunroof, and air conditioning. The engine of the 1999 (996 series) GT3 set it apart from most of the other 911 models. This engine was known as the ‘Mezger’ engine, named after its brilliant designer Hans Mezger. The engine put out 360 HP compared to the standard 911’s 300 HP. After the 996 series, came the new and improved 997 series. Better looking than the previous series, the 997 series 911 GT3 debuted in 2006 with 415 HP and like its predecessor, was only offered in a manual transmission. 28 PANDO | September 2018

In 2014, Porsche introduced the all-new 3rd Series of the 911 GT3 model, the (991 series). This 1st generation of the 991 bumped the HP to a more tantalizing 475 hp at 8,250 RPM. A Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) double-clutch gearbox and rear-wheel steering gave this car quicker upshifts and more agility. It allowed the car to lap the Nürburgring in an impressive 7 minutes and 25 seconds. Porsche purists were annoyed to say the least when they learned this car was only available in the PDK dual clutch gearbox. Back in 2014, you could order your regular 911 Carrera in stick or PDK, but not the more Track-Focused GT3 model. Porsche claimed the PDK was better suited for the track, the 0 to 60 time was half a second quicker, and lap times were considerably faster. The

purists could care less and wanted their car equipped with a manual gearbox. After I drove my friend Scott’s 991 GT3 for the first time, I did not want to get out of his car. I thought could easily live in this car. The bed could go there, the sofa here, the TV there. The car was truly amazing! The GT3 gave me a confidence I never experienced before in a road car. Enter a turn at whatever speed you desire and the GT3 responds with a, “Yes sir, is that all you got?” The GT3 not only drives and looks great, it sounds great too. The sound of that normally aspirated engine, bellowing its symphony, reverberating in and out of the canyons is something to behold. So here we are, a beautiful sunny day in

June, in San Clemente. In front of me lies a gorgeous 2018 911 GT3 in Agate Grey with a whopping 200 miles on the Odometer. My friend Pete is kind enough to let me drive his car even although it is not even broken in yet. This means keeping the revs at 5,000 RPM and under. Pete starts the engine and it is humming a beautiful note. That tingling sensation runs down my back, when I know I am about to drive something special. I jump in the cockpit and immediately feel at home. Bed goes there, Sofa here, TV there. Ok, ok back to earth, I get it. I sit in the car and notice carbon fiber in all the right places and most importantly, a manual gearbox, nice job Pete. There is leather everywhere including some places where most mere mortals would have left it unchecked on the build sheet. Hey, you never know when you might need to make a wallet out of your leather wrapped steering column. About the Agate Grey exterior color, you can never go wrong with silver or grey on a 911. Pete custom spec’d this car to his liking. The base price says $143,600

and Pete’s car adds another 23K in options bringing the total to $166,810 + Dealer mark up. Porsche Dealers are currently asking $20K over sticker because they can. This car is hotter than a Supermodel eating a Serrano Chili at Coachella in 100-degree heat, and the Porsche dealers know it. Drive up to any valet in the new GT3 and he will drop whatever he’s doing to get a chance to park the thing. If this car could talk it would say, “You loved my younger brother GT3, but I am the new version, wait until you see what I can do. How about a lap at The Nürburgring in 7 minutes and 12 seconds my friend?” On the 2018 GT3, they increased the displacement of the motor from 3.8 to 4.0 Liters and from 475 HP to 500 HP. The detailed changes inside include a new engine, new crankshaft, new oil system and liners. The engine sings to 9,000 RPM before the rev limiter kicks in. This car produces more down force than the previous model yet still reaches a top speed of 198 MPH for the PDK, and 199 MPH for the manual. That is impressive for a car with a rear wing so big, it could double as a picnic table. I press in the clutch and slip her into first gear. The clutch pedal has just the right amount of pressure. It grabs nicely and is easier to live with than the clutch in the 997 series GT3. I pull away and am excited to see what she sounds like at 5,000 RPM. The GT3 does not disappoint, emanating sounds the likes

of which the Bose optional stereo cannot match. We are driving in Sport mode, suspension set in Normal, and the ride is perfectly civil, not choppy. Pete turns on the Rev Matching mode and all of a sudden, as I down shift, the throttle pops and gargles. I instantly say, “Can I have another please?” I can hear this all day, so I down shift a couple of more times just to hear the Rev Match. Even though I never venture above 5,000 RPM, I can tell this manual GT3 is something special. I am a big fan of the 911 especially the GT3. However, I can truly understand why someone would pick the PDK as well as why someone would pick the manual. There is no right and wrong in this mix. I would be equally delighted owning either variant, but the manual requires you to actually know what the heck you are doing. Someone with limited driving experience and ability would be miles slower in the manual. This car actually asks something of you. Most 911 owners enjoy driving their car because of the sensation and driving experience they deliver; lap time is of secondary importance, especially if you are driving an earlier 60’s or 70’s variant. For the new 911 GT3, if you want the fastest lap time go PDK, if you want to dance and sing with the stick shift, go with the manual. You cannot go wrong with either one. Cheers, Albert Alan Aizin September 2018 | PANDO 29

RICE’S

Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice

John Rice’s, ex Jim Poste factory lightweight 930 in action, in earlier day - Suisse.

“WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE A PORSCHE TURBO!” or DRIVING and ATTITUDE . . . This little gem came from another region, from another time, passed on to me from my brother, John some 30 years ago. My brother saw this commentary responding to a rather excited “Turbo-Look” owner making his observation that a “real Turbo” is really not much quicker than a Turbo-Look with a 3.2 Carrera engine. That sort of got to my brother and he responded to that claim with enlightened contempt and his own testimony of what driving “a real turbo” is all about. John, a SCCA Champion, road racer, collector, keen on many makes and models, and very experienced on modified Turbos was not alone.

The following was printed in a PCA newsletter, somewhere a long time ago. However, in my experience, it is as true today as it was back then: Ok got all that? And that is with an old 300 HP stock 930 turbo. Not an upgraded one! Point is now-a-days most all “911s” are turbocharged. Got that? You have a TURBO! Actually you’ve got two of ‘em!! And a ton of protective hard- and soft-ware to survive driving one near its limits. 32 PANDO | September 2018

That’s nice and necessary these days, but as soon as some new computer enhancement comes along, government also follows behind and mandates them. Today, there are not nearly the same choices in what you can buy, in your car, these days other than the loud mufflers, paint job, and trim options.

However, Porsche does have plenty of EXTRA COST OPTIONS to make credit card companies smile . . . a lot! Then, too, the GT3 series has excellent groupings of suspension and handling options to fit anyone’s type of driving and many ways one can use them. I don’t think any other

car company can match the GT series for dialed in option for your particular choice of driving, it is just expensive! Another point to understand is the ‘saving your tail’ by computer enhancement is not enough to get the most out of your Porsche. That will involve time, cost, and a learning curve. The New Carrera (turbo or “tt”) that easing into the power and turns and climbing or descending turns with a turbocharged 911 is a whole different way of driving. Take the on ramp to the I-5 North at Main Street, Santa Ana. With little or no traffic, the road is flat turning left, then slight banked and descending. It isn’t an on ramp you go on quickly without a lot of familiarization. It takes time, and no need for going too fast most of the time. But every time you drive a ramp or road like that, you study the car’s behavior and notice where it takes to some road parts, so naturally and smoothly it becomes your new “norm”. The 405 off ramp at Westminster Ave. going east: I drove that for years with 130 HP and 911 and got to go quickly once in a while. It isn’t easy and I can’t and won’t even try that today. But it is an earned procedure that required far ahead distance, clear vision and ready for unexpected things ahead. It is best to start any turn like it is raining, slick, and slow you go. The 22 East to the South 55. This is one particular descending, banked, curve you see many sloppy drivers go too fast to begin with, then lay on the brakes where they should be accelerating to match the traffic, unbelievable! But once learned well, you can easily go from the on ramp speed limit to just above freeway speed with the greatest of ease, comfort and be steadily accelerating the whole way through. Rarely does it go that way, but when it does, you know you are in total control. It is a beautiful thing. The tougher parts like driving over parallel tar strips, where the concrete slabs are joined together or misalign to asphalt is

another matter. Older 911s-930s, you just kind of aim it with mild throttle and let it wiggle through, but no power plays there, ever! Of course, when it is clear ahead you ease into the power and enjoy the rush ALWAYS MINDFUL of having to slow quickly. That brings to mind the whole point here: Have you ever taken your Porsche, no matter what kind of Porsche it is, but have you ever dared to take it to a deserted parking lot and tried easy turns and braking and then working up to shorter stops and tighter turns at say, from 20 mph? Making the turns sharper and feeling where the Porsche is feeling uneasy or weird? *Always check things first: Tire Pressure and there is usable tread on them? Right? And loose stuff inside your Porsche: Get it out of there! Seat Belts work properly, fully retract when let go of them? Hold you secure and stay snug? Wind Shield clean? Same for the back window too. Fluids: Are all where they are supposed to be? Do you have an AAA card, just in case? Now finding an empty parking lot, you try easy turns and braking. Work up slowly to more sudden stopping. Then turns going one-quarter to half wheel turn at 15 mph and slowly working up to where it gets uneasy. That is good, this is where you are “in the zone.” That is the zone where you are learning the machine, not the other way around. No need to push yourself but if you do this and do a few easy tries, then come back in a few days, you will be amazed at how much easier it is. The 911 can get loose or even sideways, during the learning curve and that is why this IS the pitch for our PCA-OCR Driver Training and timed run through the pylons. This is where you can safely learn the limits with an instructor who knows your particular Porsche. At the driver training track you can’t hurt anything but a little ego bruising and pride. We’ve all done that too. Don’t think anyone in a real racing driving suit hasn’t. And if you haven’t got your ego bruised a little, you haven’t gone anywhere

near your Porsche’s safety limits. One last point: You need to know those limits and at least have some idea of where they are. Later on with time, you can explore some amazing ’flying on the ground’ with a Turbo that nothing else can match. My experience with the 911/930 hardware has been so rewarding, I seem to always be learning new things even now with 460,000 miles and now with nearly 500hp. YOU never stop learning.

RUF NATO 911 driven properly on power My first time driving a 930 quickly was at Riverside Raceway on the long course. I was driving Jim Poste’s recently acquired 1979 930 turbo, a “Friends of the Factory Lightweight 930, from a private owner in Suisse.” Driving the 930 with old chattering brakes eliminated feeling out the brake potential but in turns it was sticking like glue! I just finished doing the EPA and EPA certification in this 930. So we wanted to see just how it would run on a clear road. I was flat astounded to experience how flat the 930 went around the turns. And it pulled revs to max red line so easily I was quite surprised. Later on we discovered the engine was 100% stock! And even later we discovered it had all its piston rings shattered and all cylinders were warped; but, it didn’t leak a drop of oil or smoke one bit. That’s Mahle Piston/cylinder German quality. But their Porsche specified, non fined cylinders led to the heat warpage. So much for those 1978-89 cylinder tops! (We upgraded to Ruf –MAHLE 3.4 liter kit with fully finned 98 mm piston and cylinders with matching long skirt forged pistons.) September 2018 | PANDO 33

Back to driving: This Ruf NATO 911 is exactly how you “attack” a corner with power, just the right amount fed in at the right time to power out of a turn. This image seems a bit extreme, and not necessary, but the point is you can control a power out slide with POWER! You have to know your car, the road, and yourself well enough to do this, and it is not as scary as it looks. This kind of driving would only come much later for me. Today this is not so much different as it used to be. And today it is not all today’s car’s adapting to you. We mastered the machine and now we are making it (the machine) do more of what we particularly want it to do and how we want it done, and Porsche does it reliably and a lot more safely.

Absolutely Pressure) does on take off. Too much is dangerous. Use too much and your Mustang’s torque pulls you off the runway sideways, or if in the air, it does an unintended roll, and likely kills you! You learn quickly or not at all. Jim mastered the twin engine 21man Grumman Goose amphibians flying to and from Catalina. These were, according to Jim, the most challenging of all airplanes he ever flew. You had to know the sea currents, swell timing, winds around Avalon Harbor, and you had to master the timing just right to “plop down”

more than any other flying they ever did. Later on Jim went to the major airlines and jets. The routine can get quite boring. The flying became more of ‘let the computer do the job.’ The computer(s) flies the airplane using less fuel, less time, and easier on the hardware. Airline computers also ‘talk to each other’ and do things that you don’t know they are doing. This is by design all for the common good of bringing the paying passenger and goods to their destination safely and on time. I helped Jim with his MD-11s ground school and the prime directive was in an

However, for many of us it is our experiences that gives us confidence, our skills, and not some silver box to save our tail. SKILLS My good friend Jim Poste, with the 1997 Carrera 3.6 RS in last month’s PANDO, is a veteran airline pilot, a very highly skilled pilot, I must add. Jim, now retired with skills to put most “digital airline pilots” of today to shame, learned to fly P-51 Mustangs, pretty much by reading up on the flight manual and some good words form the F.A.A. check off pilot. Years of tail dragger flying prepared him for the Mustang and he, like me with a 930 turbo, learned what too much boost pressure or “M.A.P: ( Manifold

So you needed to be a part sea captain, as well as pilot, and have a sense of humor, all at the same time. Yet every pilot I know loved flying those Catalina seaplanes

emergency: RESET THE COMPUTER, RESET THE COMPUTER, (there are five of them) and you must learn to reset them because it is impossible to fly the airplane yourself without them.

Jim mastered many airplanes in his career, but occasionally refused to let the auto landing system computer land his airplane. Jim landed his 757 ERs with the “handlebars” as Jim says, “I am the pilot not the xxx computers. And don’t let anyone tell you the simulator flies just like the airplane, BECAUSE IT DOESN’T!” Jim had a need to keep his skills honed to perfection and he did so for many decades, amen.

Digital driving now adjusts to your wants and needs and does so quite well. But one fact remains: No matter how much Porsche tries to disguise or hide that turbo rush, some of it is still there. One last remark as if it was not known already: I would not trade my old 930 power for the new ones of today.

Emergency Locater and Flight Data Recorder. Porsche’s silver boxes are truly wonders to let us drive and operate our Porsches more as we wish them to and have far better safety and reliability than the old mechanical way we grew up with. Having said all this, I can only hope some of our PCA’ers take their 911s to heart. Dare yourself to go to a driver training session, if nothing else, just see what it is all about.

Capt. JAMES POSTE PCA-OCR and Ruf Turbo Master Pilot as well! I love Capt. Jim’s final thought on the subject: Do you know why airlines of the future will only have one pilot and one dog in the cockpit?” Answer: The pilot’s job is to feed the dog. The dog’s job is to bite the pilot if he touches anything!” Today’s Porsches have many computers, ‘silver boxes’ to run things. (PS: I know of no “black boxes” in Porsches today or in airplanes either. Computer boxes need to be light and radiate heat out of them. That is critical, so aluminum boxes are the standard as they are lighter and vent heat better than the old steel cased boxes of the 1940-’50 which were painted black. And one more thing: There are no “black boxes” to signal rescue teams to an airplane wreck. They are by law, bright “INTERNATIONAL RED,” not “black boxes.”

Emergency Locater and Flight Data Recorder.hing, over and over: “I had no idea my car could go around a turn so fast.” (Actually, you need a new verb that fits better after training: “QUICK.” We learn to drive a 911 QUICKLY. You learn to be quick around a corner and that means you’ve learned to drive easier, smoother, and relaxed. You will learn too, that you must breathe. Yep! I held my breath at first too.

Thinking on all of this I return to the old 30 year forwarding. I know it’s absolutely true and if you’ve never really driven a 930 with skilled attitude, it is likely unbelievable. We answer questions, inquiries, and comments. TRY US! Godspeed

Rice’s Ramblings: Ask a Mechanic If you have a question about your Porsche, please send in your question to Lee at: riceturbos@sbcglobal.net

All this is understanding your machine whether it is a P-51 Mustang, Boeing 757 ER, or a Porsche 911. They all are serious machines that are remarkable when once learned and have fun with. Lastly: Over the years, I well understood and learned to LOVE the boost building and felt deep smiles as my 911 surged forward. There is truly nothing like it. Now, today, in 2018 all you “Carrera” drivers are getting some of that experience too. The later turbo-ized Carrera has been homogenized to take out the more urgent surge and rush as our unrefined forbearers, but they remain something to respect and learn from.
