Any resemblance to the car of your dreams is purely intentional. It wears its heritage proudly on its sleeves. And fenders. And roofline. Experience the Porsche Macan S. A 340-horsepower twin-turbo V6, PDK double-clutch transmission and active all-wheel drive with Porsche Traction Management for maximum grip in varying driving conditions. All standard. The Macan S is built around our defining belief that every drive should be unforgettable. And every car should be a sports car. Dream fulfillment begins with a test drive. Porsche. Unbelievable that it’s September!
This will be a terrific month! Finally, after showcasing a stunning concept and teasing us with prototypes in various stages of camouflage, Porsche will finally debut the production version of the Taycan this month at the Frankfurt Motor Show, with delivery to customers beginning in January 2020. A friend, one of the factory drivers who has driven the test mules, confirmed that it will drive circles around the current Tesla but has also confirmed some of the sensual curves of the concept were lost to the pragmatic realities of production. None the less, those of us who participated in the deposit program look forward to getting our orders into the production que. Early this month several of us will escape to the Woodstock Inn, host resort for the PCA Vermont Treffen. Steve Fairbanks, our esteemed Concours Head Judge, previously stayed at the Inn and based on his reports, we are excited to join Steve and the other +/- 250 participating PCA members in exploring the back roads and restaurants of Vermont. Please join us at our OCR New Member Picnic (free to new members and their family) on September 21st. The next day will be our third Autocross event of the season, targeted to simply be a day of driving fun. We limit the event to 65 drivers to assure plenty of track time. Lunch and paid corner workers are included in driver fees. The Zone 8 Concours series resumes this month with SGVR on the 22nd and Las Vegas Region on the 28th. Lots of opportunities to socialize and participate with the Porsche club this month. Please check the calendar for all our events!

President, PCA-OCR
The “Grill and Chill” season from Memorial Day through Labor Day has flown by! Fortunately, OCR Porsche members can continue enjoying pleasant, drivable weather - so get out there and explore the variety of nearby or far away, famous or not so famous; destinations. OCR members often source the Pando and OCR App for different types of individual, family and “convoy” driving opportunities including but not limited to AX, Treffen, Porsche Parade, touring, rally’s, concours, dining, cars and coffee and much, much more. I’d be remiss if I didn’t include the Porsche Experience Center in Carson - it’s a must and with only 2 in the US (Atlanta, too) OCR Porschephiles are lucky it’s in our “backyard!” So buzz on by, grab a bite to eat in the first floor cafe, watch the track action, or reserve some track time in one of their cars, or have a wonderful dinner upstairs. In closing, here are a few more driving ideas - enjoy!

Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington
THE COMPLETE BOOK OF PORSCHE 911: EVERY MODEL SINCE 1964
by Randy Leffingwell, published 30 July, 2019 by Motorbooks, Beverly, MA The prolific Randy Leffingwell has come to supplant Karl Ludvigsen as the modern guru of Porsche lore. Ludvigsen, the engineer, focused on the technical development of Porsche engines and automobiles; while Leffingwell, the photojournalist, focuses on the ownership and use of these cars. Ludvigsen is famous for producing two classic multi-volume tomes on Porsche; Leffingwell seems to produce a new gem for the coffee table almost every year – books that are very well illustrated, both in quantity and quality of photographs, and also contains a wealth of textual information. Randy Leffingwell is noted as a photographer and indeed the photographs in this book are superb. But this book shows that a tremendous amount of effort was devoted in researching the stories and data of all the variants of the 911 theme, even the Ruf editions. The book justifiably claims to be “the ultimate single volume resource for every 911 aficionado” and, whether you are interested in the pictures, data blocks, or the stories of cars, this is a great book. It begins with a very valuable ‛bonus feature:’ a comprehensive 29-page discussion of the predecessor 356 models from ‛48 to ‛65. It continues with a model by model overview for each year of 911 production, starting with the 901 prototype of 1963, and progressing to the 2020 models. The Complete Book of Porsche 911 is not a book most people will read from cover to cover. However, every owner will find the discussion of their year/ model to be enlightening, and potential purchasers can learn more about any car
they are considering than the current owner probably knows. Though not a purchasing guide, it can be a very useful resource for the purchaser uncertain as to what model/ year would best fit their intended Porsche lifestyle. In addition to production cars, the book includes some of the factory’s racing, prototype and special-production cars, illustrated with both current and archival photography. Throughout the book, comprehensive specification charts are included, and factory selling prices are listed. For each year/model of 911 production, the characteristics of that model, their genesis, and the market/racing performance achieved, are discussed in great detail, and includes well illustrated exterior and interior photographs of a current example of that model. Some of the more modern vehicles are illustrated with Porsche Presse or Porsche Cars North America photos. Data tables are sufficiently detailed as to show weight differences between cars equipped with PDK and those with Manual transmissions.
The Complete Book of Porsche 911 is indeed a massive work, with multiple pictures, of the inside and outside, of most examples of the roughly 150 ‘911’ models covered in eight ‛generations’ from ‛64 through 2020+. Specialty versions, with production runs as low as 21 vehicles are illustrated and described in considerable detail. The Complete Book of Porsche 911 has hard covers, complete with a carbon-fiber look, with quality printing on heavy-weight, glossy paper. There are 344, 9-1/2x11 inch pages, 450 photos and a very comprehensive index. A book like this is a bargain at $50.00. By the time you read this it should be available from your favorite bookseller (ask for it), or from http:/www.motorbooks. com (click on the magnifying glass to open a search box). NOTE: The first 285 pages of this edition of THE COMPLETE 911, are exactly the same as in the 2012 edition. September 2019 | PANDO 7

BLASPHEMY! Since the very first Porsche rolled out of a sawmill in Gmund, Austria in 1948, Porsches have been known as ‘driver’s cars.’ Even with the upcoming move toward electrification, starting later this year with the Taycan EV, Porsche has signaled its intent that electrified Porsches will still be driver-oriented. However, autonomous vehicles (AVs) also loom on the horizon. AV proponents claim that these self-driving vehicles will greatly reduce accidents, saving many, if not all, of the nearly 40,000 lives lost each year. Their rationale is that since human error causes over 90% of fatal crashes (speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, etc.) removing the human element from the equation – the “loose nut behind the wheel” – will literally save us from ourselves.
10 PANDO | September 2019
Is a Self-Driving Porsche Still a Porsche? Story by Fred Aikins / Photos by Fred Aikins and Porsche Newsroom Website for Panamera InnoDrive
September 2019 | 11 PANDO
But what about those of us who like to drive in fast, capable machines such as our Porsches, and who take pride in our craft, building and honing our skills behind the wheel through HPDE track days, autocrosses, long-distance touring and everyday practice of the little things that make us better drivers and allow us to enjoy our Porsches?
Is there a future for us in a self-driving world? Before we can answer that question, we need to look at the levels of autonomy, as defined by the SAE (Society for Automotive Engineering:
levels of autonomy: Level Zero : No driving automation, the driver controls every function of the vehicle (my Porsche 356C, for instance). Level 1 : Driver assistance of basic tasks by mechanical subsystems. Think cruise control, ABS braking or traction or stability control where the electronics intervene to assist the driver in safely executing his decisions behind the wheel. Level 2 : Similar to Level 1, but with more electronic sophistication and increasing use of sensors to monitor the driving environment. In this case, think of Automatic Cruise Control that maintains a set speed and distance from the car ahead; Automatic Emergency Braking that measures the distance and rate of closure to the car
12 PANDO | September 2019
ahead and automatically applies the brakes and alerts the driver to help avoid an impact; Blind-Spot Monitoring, which uses radar or sonar to detect vehicles to the side and rear, and Lane-Departure Warning, which “reads” the lines on the road to keep the vehicle centered, providing an auditory and/or tactile signal to the driver. Level 3 : Conditional Automation. The vehicle uses the input from the various sensors to ‘drive’ to a programmed destination, but may ask the driver to intervene if needed. Most of the best systems currently on the market fall just short of Level 3, although the European Audi A8 comes very close. Contrary to common belief, Tesla’s Autopilot system is not Level 3, which has led to tragic, and fatal, consequences. Level 4 : High Driving Automation. The car is able to do everything, with no expectation of any intervention from the human ‘driver.’ There will still be a steering wheel and pedals to control the vehicle, but only for use in limited circumstances. Level 5 : Full Driving Automation. This is the utopian/dystopian vision of the future of transportation where there is no steering wheel or pedals. The occupant (you can’t really refer to them as a ‘driver’) tells the vehicle where to go and then sits back and naps, works or surfs the Internet, having absolutely nothing to do with the forward motion of the vehicle. Back to the question at hand: Will there be an autonomous Porsche? According to Porsche North America’s CEO, Klaus Zellmer, in an article from last fall in Motor Authority, the answer is an emphatic, “No. Our plan is to always have the steering wheel and
always have the pedals and potentially to even have the manual gearbox to really engage with the car and to do it all yourself.” Porsche’s current semi-autonomous suite of technology is called Porsche InnoDrive (PID) and includes adaptive cruise control, augmented by high-resolution navigation data coupled with radar and video sensors to ‘read’ speed limits, upcoming terrain and corner radii to optimize engine settings and gear selection. PID also includes Traffic Jam Assist, which works at speeds below 37mph to provide minor steering corrections to keep the vehicle centered within the lane. The good news is that the driver can override PID by tapping the brakes or pushing on the accelerator. PID and Traffic Jam Assist are currently available on the 2019 Panamera sedan and Panamera Sport Turismo, but expect these features to spread to other Porsche models, including the Cayenne, Macan and, eventually, 911. Where this fits in with the SAE Levels is probably between Level 2 and Level 3, which should be welcome news for Porsche enthusiasts. PID and Traffic Jam Assist are benefits of Porsche’s membership in the Volkswagen Group, which includes Audi. Just this summer, VW and Ford Motor Co. have announced a multi-billion-dollar agreement to collaborate on autonomous vehicles and EVs, which should help spread development costs. All of this means that a Porsche owner will still be able to drive up Highway 1 to Big Sur or attack a twisting canyon road like Ortega Highway, but still be able to engage some level of autonomy for a Friday afternoon commute on the 405. In other words, having your strudel and eating it, too.
Porsche’s current semi-autonomous suite of technology is called Porsche InnoDrive (PID) and includes adaptive cruise control, augmented by high-resolution navigation data coupled with radar and video sensors.

“Ad-Infinium” OCR Rally Sunday, June 30, 2019 Story by Glenn Billings Photos by Larry Moore
T
he dictionary definition of “Ad-Infinium,” and I`m paraphrasing, is a sequence of things that never have an end. It`s the same as ad-infinitum, but with the letter “T” added. And T`s are what you got in abundance on the rally route through northern Orange County. Twenty-three of them! These were “noted” instructions not mentioned in the route instructions. You follow the public road until you come to a T, then exercise the noted instructions. However, the route instructions take precedent over the noted instructions and may sound complicated, but it’s not. Despite questions being answered at the Driver’s meeting, and odometers set back to zero; the best possible weather greeted our enthusiastic group of rally adventurers. The June-gloom that hung around for most of June’s thirty days disappeared on the last day of the month. The day had terrific blue, breezy skies, with comfortable temperatures in the high seventies. In pretrial runs, “Rallymeister” Larry Moore, thinking the event was too tough, softened some of the questions, photos and minutia in order to keep everyone on course. In the end, Larry was surprised by the groups’ knowledge, insight and judgment. Out of a possible 76 points, the top 5 finishers all scored over 70! The 9:15 a.m. start, at 30 second intervals, began at the 17th street and Tustin Avenue Mall. Staying away from Freeways,
we rallied around industrial and residential areas keeping a lookout for the 12 photos that were taped to your dash board. For example, on 1st street, if you have the green light to turn left onto Lyon, you might miss the Motel 6 WIFI sign on your right. From there, some major streets like El Camino and Redhill looped you around the Tustin villages, then up to the hilly sections of northeast Anaheim before heading south to Orange Olive. Crossing Lincoln Ave. near Eisenhower Park, you wind your way back to Santa Ana and being on 17th street, you turn right and you end your hour and fifty minute, 38 mile journey at Black Angus; a last minute change due to a Hot Rod club’s overtaking of the parking lot at the 17th street Grill. With all the answers turned in for a perfect score, you would have encountered 6 bridges, 4 cul-de-sacs, crossed over 12 railroad tracks and Newport Ave 4 times. Of the 12 photos, 5 were false, so if you marked “no” on the fake picture you got points. And of course, remember the “T’s.” 19 of the “T’s” were right turns and lefts were only made by the note’s instruction. Enough to “T” any one off! Mark your calendar NOW for November 3rd which will be the final rally of 2019 titled, “The Presidential Rally,” and join your OCR club members. There are a lot of Presidents’ names on streets all around northern Orange and in the Anaheim Hills area. The Rally will start and end at the Phoenix Club just north of the Honda Center. See you there!

Saturday October 12, 2019 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm + Orange Coast Region’s “Hearts and Garages Tour” moves to October, in an effort to beat the August heat! For the benefit of the newer members, the “Hearts and Garages Tour” is a progressive dinner where we enjoy each other’s company at four different garages in Orange County. Referred to as “Hearts and Garages,” because it’s a combination of a tour of OCR member’s garages and to raise money for our Region’s Designated Charity, the Semper Fi Fund.* The cost charged will be to reimburse the hosts for the progressive dinner, and participants have the opportunity to make a donation directly to the Semper Fi Fund. The event will start at Noon, and finish up in the evening, so you can expect a full afternoon of truly inspiring garages and of visiting with your friends. Registration will open in early September. Watch for more information in your email from OCR. (Please make sure your email listed at pca.org is accurate, so you will not miss anything!)
Pete Lech : peterlech@att.net *Semper Fi Fund is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization providing a variety of programs to assist wounded veterans in all branches of the United States Armed Forces. The organization describes its mission as “providing urgently needed resources and support for post-9/11 combat wounded, critically ill and catastrophically injured members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families.” As of March 2018, the Semper Fi Fund has issued 158,000 grants totaling $165 million in assistance. https://semperfifund.org/

RICE’S
Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice
WHERE HAVE ALL THE PORSCHE GOODIE STORES GONE…
Recently I discovered I could not get Porsche parts from Ecklers which was the remnants of Automotion and Performance Products, as they were acquired years ago by Ecklers. However, now Ecklers has now gone into something called: “ROSE PASSION,” in France. I looked them up and it seems it is not easy to navigate into, find anything you need, an on-line parts thing, and then too, euro taxCertainly NOT! Lastly, my 2 cents worth, it is no longer anywhere near as friendly as our beloved Automotion.
I mostly remember AUTOMOTION & PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS. Automotion was responsible for a lot of demystifying some of the technical things in the 911. Their catalogue was always looked forward to get in the mail and we read everything, especially the technical tips, new performance items, cleaning products, to major repair tools for all Porsches as well. The way they did things, they just made you want to buy something.
I’ve also heard through the grapevine, that Pelican Parts is now owned by a different company? Anybody know what the score is on that?
Then Chuck Stoddard’s Ohio Porsche dealership made a Stoddard catalogue (www. stoddard.com) that greatly helped us with parts diagrams and part numbers so we didn’t need to buy (if one could even get ) the factory parts catalogues!
We have had many interesting and helpful Porsche parts specialty companies that have made rebuilding, racing, and just driving our Passion Porsche, a possibility. Many of those companies not only had the exact parts we really needed but were helpful in finding exactly what we needed even when they did not have the part themselves.
Many technical tips were in his catalogue as well. Chuck became PCA National Technical Chairman for many years, and his dealership ads in every PANORAMA contained monthly tech tips, which were read and re-read many times. And, most of us will recall Chuck acquiring his own 917 (K) painted in factory white and driving it at PCA events!

Thankfully, we still have a Stoddard catalogue available, with new owners, but still a GREAT Stoddard Catalogue today. Long gone but RACE FORCE was a premier source for rare factory racing parts and goodies as they did something even better. They made some things better than the factory did and even made them better. For instance, they manufactured their own RSRtype High Butterfly MFI air stacks for the MFI fuel Injection for the 911. AND, Race Force made them more adaptable. Now they enabled you to run a High Butterfly with shorter air stacks that fit under a standard 911 air filter unit, or run with their medium, or tall full race, RSR air stacks. They also put into the lower RSR throttle units a vacuum port off of #1 and #4 for ignition use, and on the upper air stacks a fuel primer jet. One in each stack just like the street air stacks, off the 2.4, 2.7RS & 3.0 RS liter MFI street engines. One primer jet in each throttle body. Believe me when I say this GREATLY helps getting a cold engine started!
But like many others, RACE FORCE is gone. However, their ideas have not left us. Now, EUROMETRIX (eurometrix.ws/ prototype_high_butterfly.htm) makes a High Butterfly MFI for the 911 that not only works perfectly, but looks beautiful as well. Do you recall the Porsche catalogues from “AJR?” That was Alan Johnson Racing in San Diego. They offered a lot of racing and high-performance road & street parts. I believe it was they who first sold me on “COOL CARBON” brake pads. I still use and love the “Cool Carbon” brake pads, which I used on my 911 S brakes, 930 Turbo brakes and now, on my Evo 911 with BIG REDS. AJR is gone but I got my new pads through BREMBO Race Technologies (www.racetechnologies.com) in Irvine. By the way, my “Cool Carbon” brake pads come in a box labeled: “Porterfield R4-S.” Regardless of who or whom actually makes them, they are easy on disc wear, no noise, and low (& easy to clean) dust. PELICAN lists them also. Unfortunately, gone too is Vasek Polak Racing with their small but loaded catalog. Today we do have Vertexauto from Miami FL (vertexauto.com). Currently, they are one of the ‘user friendly’ hard copy catalogs. They also offer replacement parts that Porsche sold out of, and care not to remanufacture. However, Vertex offers something even better and resolved something I have complained about for a long time. They offer parts made better than ‘factory’ made in the first place. Specifically, A CURE FOR annoyingly and troublesome deep corrosion in the casting of the fan housings and delicate magnesium fan blades. Now Vertex and some others are now offering the better made ALUMINUM fans and aluminum fan housings because they reverted to what Porsche used in their 1965, ’66, ‘67 911s in the first place. AASE Sales (www.aasesales.com) has some very difficult to find parts in Ohio, and has a good website with easy to look-up quality parts. I use them monthly, and they are user-friendly.
Also, not to un-friend the local P+A dealers, Sunset Porsche out of Hillsboro, Oregon has found, sold and sent me O.E.M. parts quicker than local dealers! EBS Engine Building Supply (www. ebsracing.com) has been most helpful in making it a one order for OEM and nonPorsche parts like MAHLE, Raceware, ARP, J&E, etc., and they are very knowledgeable and helpful with all special parts. Be sure to ask for Jon, he’s the best!
Rice’s Ramblings: Ask a Mechanic If you have a question about your Porsche, please send in your question to Lee at: riceturbos@sbcglobal.net
TurboKraft (http://www.turbokraft.com/) Chris Carroll and I have been friends for years and I can qualify their knowledge and quality fabrication, cleverness, and ability to make difficult things simple; whether turbo or non-turbo cars are in their Mesa Arizona shop. What do you use or recall of good parts and especially now as a HELPFUL parts reference. It’s summer and a cool Porsche is not only nice but needed. I’ve had a personal A/C failure which left me on an unpleasant drive on a clogged freeway. Had to use open windows, all four of them in a 911! (early 911s and early 930s UP TO 1977 had the ‘pop out’ rear quarter windows) but that only marginally cools, and you also get all the traffic noise, just like the good old days of early R-Gruppe times. I quickly got my A/C back UP and running. Problem: I found my Receiver Drier leaking around the middle where the two ‘cans’ joins together. I saw no damage, so I can only reason the seal or gasket failed and as I use ENVIO SAFE replacement refringent, which is serviced at much lower pressures than the R-134 stuff, it wasn’t an over pressure issue. Now most quality replacement Driers are two-piece aluminum, welded 360 degrees around. If yours isn’t, I would replace it for an aluminum welded one.
