ll of the economists say that the recession is nearly over and are predicting a slow but sure recovery. The USA, France and Germany are all bullish that the recession is over but we will still have a hangover for some time yet. Share markets are looking better and governments are positive about the future. What does that mean to us, are we going to be better off in 2010 or not? Unemployment is at its highest since 2000. Fewer people are leaving for Australia and Kiwis abroad are coming home showing a positive net migration figure for the last quarter. The residential property market is doing well and there are now multiple offers being made on properties. At the auctions land prices are increasing and good residential stock is hard to get. South Africans are still coming to New Zealand in their droves but many of them without the right skill set and are having difficulty getting work. Some unfortunately are going back home. My advice is to employ a good licensed adviser. In this magazine we have a variety of stories and articles from our advertisers and by the response far and wide the magazine is now part of many people’s lives and is eagerly snapped up at the South African outlets. The social functions are being well supported at the Browns Bay Bowling Club, please see list of dates in the magazine. We have sponsors for the next two evenings but we need some one to host the Xmas function. Please let me know if you are interested. The prime minister has been giving talks around the country and is very positive regarding New Zealand’s progress and resilience to the recession. His office has once again supported our magazine by supplying an article on the direction in which our country is heading. The 2011 Rugby world cup is getting closer and closer. Please contact the South African supporters club for tickets and information about the venues. I believe that the Springboks will be training at Long Bay School and the North Harbour stadium. What an opportunity for our children. Thank you for your support and go the “Boks”.

Creating a mood out of light and colour

e continue with our series on the works of South African artists whose paintings will also feature as our front covers. This issue we present world renowned painter Roelof Rossouw and his work “Road to Clarens” appears on our front cover. Roelof was born in 1957, and grew up in Benoni, near Johannesburg. He is a painter of figures, city and landscapes, street scenes, boats and harbours, architecture, parks and gardens. His favourite medium is oils, but he also enjoys working in collage, acrylic and mixed media. Roelof studied at the Johannesburg School of Art and was employed by Medunsa (Medical University of SA) as a graphic artist and medical illustrator. In 1990, Roelof left Medunsa and was doing freelance work whilst transitioning to be able to start painting fulltime and in 2001 he moved to Robertson in the Western Cape. He has presented 33 solo exhibitions at top galleries in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Stellenbosch, UK and Canada. He has also had other exhibitions in Glasgow, London, Jersey, Galway, Northern Ireland, San Francisco and Miami.

Roelofs work can be found in the homes of Clint Eastwood, and many other private collectors in South Africa and throughout the world’’ Roelof finds inspiration for his work in everyday situations. The subject matter doesn’t have to be grand or idyllic; quite the opposite - he observes the abstract shapes and exciting contrasts created by the sunlit and shadow areas of buildings, an old factory, a boat yard, a crowded street, farm-lands, etc. These are the kind of visual statements that inspire him to capture them on canvas. The central theme of his paintings has something to do with mood, light and colour. He creates a particular atmosphere and sense of time. By reducing unnecessary detail he will focus the attention on the shapes and juxtaposition of colour. Roelof loves the Cape where he enjoys painting the vineyards, mountains, harbours, street scenes and Cape Dutch architecture. When Roelof was seventeen his art teacher took the class on a European Art Tour and he fell in love with Europe and travel. Since 1995, he has visited a foreign country every year, mainly England and Europe. Some years the overseas trips become well planned painting vacations and he has painted in Italy, Kiev (Ukraine), France and USA Roelof can be contacted in South Africa on: rsr94@lando.co.za Postal address: PO Box 577, Robertson, CAPE 6705 SOUTH AFRICA To view his work: www.art.co.za/roelofrossouw

South African A MESSAGE FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRIME MINISTER
Securing a brighter future for New Zealand National has been working hard to protect New Zealanders from the sharpest edges of the recession. We’ve been boosting spending on frontline services in education, health and justice. We’ve maintained income support entitlements like New Zealand Superannuation and Working for Families. And we’ve stopped Government debt from skyrocketing.
N
ow that the worst of the recession appears to be over, this Government’s challenge is to help communities recover, and to boost the economy of tomorrow. We are ambitious for New Zealand and want to secure a brighter future for you. That’s why we’re committed to giving young people the opportunities they need to succeed. It is our next generation that will make a difference to New Zealand’s future. Young New Zealanders were particularly hard hit by this recession so recently we announced our Youth Opportunities Package, which invests $152 million to help create work, education, and training opportunities for young people. We’ve also announced our Break-Away Package for School Holidays. This is designed to increase opportunities for children to take part in meaningful activities in the school holidays – whether it’s drama, outdoor adventure, or organised sport. We’ve broadened our Fresh Start for Young Offenders package of initiatives. These reforms target young people who have veered off the rails and found themselves in trouble with the police or the youth justice system. And we’ve introduced our Kiwisport initiative, aimed at encouraging more school children to get involved in organised sport. We’re also committed to making sure that every child in New Zealand has a chance to climb the ladder of opportunity. It’s important every child learns to read, write and do maths. Getting the basics right will help them make valuable contributions to their communities and their country. Our National Standards scheme will see all children from age five assessed against the National Standard no matter what school they are at. These results will be reported to parents in plain English. This is an important step for ensuring parents know how their child is really doing at school. If you don’t know your child is slipping behind, you can’t do anything about it. But if you do know, you can work with the school to help your child achieve. Tackling climate change is also vital as we build a more prosperous New Zealand. There’s been a lot of debate lately about what action we should be taking. Later this year, we will be negotiating climate change targets with many countries at Copenhagen. National is committed to combating climate change and reducing New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions. We are about a balanced, practical approach that has New Zealand doing its fair share towards this global problem. We need to balance our environmental responsibilities with our economic opportunities. Our target for 2020 is to reduce emissions by 10 to 20 per cent on 1990 levels. This is internationally credible, and both environmentally and economically responsible. It’s great news for our families and businesses that it looks like the economy is starting to recover. We all know there will be more challenges ahead, but National will continue its comprehensive plan to lift New Zealand’s economic performance. We are determined to help businesses recover, create more

HOW TO STEER YOUR BUSINESS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION! Ex-South African accountant Wayne Oliver has had much experience in number crunching and his services will certainly be invaluable in getting your small to medium business on the right track.
H
is business is known as “Synergistic Outcomes” and it has long been supporting businesses in SA and NZ to increase profits and reduce unnecessary expenditure. Wayne says:- “We are primarily an accounting and bookkeeping service to small and medium enterprises. Our clients choose us for our fresh, personal approach to small business accounting which we call ‘Fixed Fee Personal Business Accounting’. This is designed to save our clients time, money and the stress of complicated, tedious paperwork. Our personal monthly /bimonthly visit to each client, at no extra cost, means we are able to ensure you are receiving the best advice on the current figures. We let you know exactly what your business is doing currently and help you steer the business in the right direction.......before it is too late.”
Have you considered this in your business? Creating a budget and sales forecast A pilot would never fly a plane from Los Angeles to San Francisco without a flight plan that explains how to get there. Yet all too often, small business people open their doors without clear plans to help them get where they want to go. One of the easiest ways to get there — wherever that is — is by creating a budget and sales forecast. A budget doesn’t have to be a restrictive plan that forces you to deprive
yourself of what you want. In fact, a budget should be a guide, not a constraint. A reasonable budget allows you to do what you want. It allows you to use your resources where they’re most needed, so your business will head in the right direction. Creating a financial plan lets you control your business’s cash flow instead of it controlling you. Creating a budget doesn’t have to be a complicated or time-consuming task. Actually, in the beginning, it’s best to keep things simple. The key is to determine how much you’ll spend and earn in any given year, and then use that figure to project how you want to grow in subsequent years. If you already own a business, it’s simply a matter of digging through some records to see where the money went, and deciding where you actually want it to go. If you’re a new entrepreneur, you’ll need to do some homework and make realistic assumptions about your business. Either way, a budget is simply a tool that allows you to put your money where it can best be used. It would be a pleasure to assist you in the above planning and in any other areas of concern. FINDING GOOD SOLUTIONS TO FARMING PROBLEMS! Ex-Zimbabwean Dave Blackwell has a lot to offer to local NZ farmers. He has had farming blood pumping through his veins for many years prior to emigrating from his beloved homeland Zimbabwe, the previous bread basket of Africa. He is now applying valuable skills acquired during his successful years to a business here in Auckland known as “HARVEST FARM ADVISORY.” Here is his story:-
O
n arriving from Zimbabwe over 4 ½ years ago I resumed a career in agriculture, not entirely by choice. After over 15 years operating as a farm consultant, I was well and truly type cast. Agriculture was the only experience I had, despite having qualified as a microbiologist 30 years earlier. Farming principles are universal, however to the immigrant the new Kiwi jargon and buzz is confusing and disorientating. Most employers assume that everyone understands. Unfortunately, if you mess up as a result of a communication break down, you are often perceived as stupid at best, or deliberately obstructionist at worst. Sure there are some major system differences but most are probably more cultural and linguistic than technical. Being forewarned would mitigate against these problems. I vowed that, if I was at my age ever able to get my head around it at all, I would devote some of my time trying to help prepare other immigrants by offering some orientation. I have seen a number of Southern Africans working on farms and really struggling with the “work ethic” and language, invariably leading to abject frustration. In my experience if you ask a question, it is either not understood or perceived as a stupid question. Imagine your response if someone who claimed to be an experienced farmer asked you what a “Tractor” was! Of
Starting or resuming a career in Agriculture? Then you need to be talking to us.
Farmers will not have the time or patience to teach you the lingo. We offer a basic orientation course for immigrants written by an immigrant from Southern Africa. So if you want to work for, or deal with farmers, then this is for you. We can also help you if you intend to set up a business within the industry. Contact us for further information on this course and other services, or why not visit and register through our website: www.harvestfarmadvisory.co.nz 09 8892707 ª027 3158351 |info@harvestfarmadvisory.co.nz

course most people would know what a tractor was but most immigrants would not know what a “rising 3 springer” was! I could not understand why farmers looked sideways at me when I asked them if they had applied any fertiliser in mid winter, only to be told that they only did that in the autumn and where did I come from ? They did however admit to applying Nitrogen! Everywhere else in the world, Nitrogen in a form that can be applied to make plants grow, would be classed as a fertilizer, but not here! Now 4 ½ years down the track, I have set up Harvest Farm Advisory and farmers are paying me for my advice and valuing my “outside the square” approach. In addition we intend to offer an orientation course, the objective of which is to facilitate rapid and effective assimilation of all incumbents into the agricultural workforce. Plenty of Magic, Skill and Perfection -
THAT’S ex-SA NETBALL STAR
IRENE VAN DYK By Ted Woodberg
S
ince her arrival in New Zealand from South Africa in 2000, Irene has become a rising star in international netball. She currently plays for the Waikato/ Bay of Plenty team, the Magic and during the ANZ netball championships played here recently she proved to the world that she certainly does have the ”magic” that it takes to be a top rate shooter. She has now recorded her second straight perfect game in this transTasman series by shooting 45 balls from 45 attempts, helping her team to a 6345 win over NSW Swifts.
How does she do it?
eZfrKIGYZ
During the season Van Dyk spends about 45 minutes every day practicing her shooting. She improvises match conditions by getting a colleague to harass her while she is trying to shoot. And, best of all, she practices shooting with her eyes closed! This technique could come in handy if she is injured during a match and her vision is impaired. During the off season she punishes herself with an arduous physical
training schedule that keeps her muscles well toned and her body hyper fit. Most sportswomen look towards retiring as they get into their late thirties, but not this tough lady! She is only two months into her thirty-eighth year and still going strong! Magic coach Noelene Taurua, who herself is only a few years older than Irene, believes that there is no reason for her top shooter to take retirement yet. She is at the peak of her career and should still be able to compete in a few more seasons. The South African Magazine carried a story on Irene in Issue No 3 last year (July 2008) but after her recent record-breaking performance in the ANZ Championships we couldn’t resist putting this enigmatic South African born lady right back in the limelight where she belongs! Keep it up, Irene; you make your fellow South Africans proud!

South African INTRODUCING:......
Advertorial
“The SA New Arrivals Club!” Studies have shown that there are events which occur in our lives which are more stressful than others. Ranking very high on this list are: • Moving house • Changing jobs • Separation from friends and loved ones • Adjusting to a new environment Each one of these events in itself is stressful, so consider the impact when they all happen at once, and what you have is ........IMMIGRATION. So...........welcome to New Zealand. A group of SA recent arrivals have put heads together to establish an organization to welcome and assist other recent arrivals. This has been done successfully in the past, but for some reason has died a death, possibly those running it ‘outgrew’ other recent arrivals ?? Can’t blame them for that! Those who attended previously gained enormous benefit from the organisation, and seem a little disappointed at its demise. Meetings will take place once a month, and will be social and informative. Come along for a snack, a drink, and a chat. Bring your kids; we’ll be doing something special for them each time. We will host guest speakers to share with us information which you won’t find on the internet, providing insight into how ACC really works, what are the real implications of a de facto relationship, what actually happens in the classroom when your children are at school and many, many more interesting topics.

CITY IMPACT CHURCH “A CITY CHURCH WITH SA LINKS”
W
hen Jaco and Mari Grobler and their two young children came to New Zealand from South Africa in 2002 their first priority, as responsible parents, was to secure two coverings for their family; firstly a church home and next a family home. Once this had been done the rest of their story is not unlike the thousands of South Africans that have immigrated to New Zealand in recent years..
Jaco and Mari Grobler
Their desire to search out a church home led them to City Impact Church. Being one of the biggest churches in New Zealand and having the largest number of South African members in its congregation made City Impact the perfect choice for them. Seven years down the track Jaco and Mari are heavily involved in the church through pastoring, training and integrating new comers. City Impact Church was founded by Pastors Peter & Bev Mortlock in 1982 and has grown to a congregation of around 3000 people. They are devoted to seeing souls saved and the Body of Christ grow into unity, maturity and wholeness.
City Impact Church is a vibrant, contemporary and charismatic church. Great worship, dynamic preaching, multimedia and excellent coffee make it a superb place to build friendships and ‘do life together’. If you have young children, you may like to know more about Kid’s Church, which has an action-packed programme and its very own worship team. For older kids, check out the events for youth on Friday nights, and our Junior High programme on Sunday mornings. Come join us for a service and after the service make your way to the Guest Lounge for your complimentary latte, and to meet some great people who can answer any questions you may have about City Impact Church. Catch our TV programme ‘Impact For Life’ on TV3 Tuesday mornings, and on Prime at 9am on Sundays. City Impact Church 794 East Coast Road. Browns Bay. Auckland Ph. 09- 477 0300

Midnight Youth – Left to Right: Aidan, Matt, Jeremy, Simon and Nick
THE NEW ZEALAND/SOUTH AFRICAN MUSIC SCENE FEATURING……
Midnight Youth New Zealand’s latest hot rock band which has two ex-SA members By Ted Woodberg
I
magine a group of young boys at Rangitoto High School, Auckland, meeting in the quad for lunch. They are best mates and they are bound by their collective love of music. Listen to their conversation:“Hey, Aidan, can you play drums?” “Sure,” he says. ”I’ve got a drum kit at home. It drives my parents crazy!” “I play the bass guitar. What about you Simon?” “Yeah. I can do some lead breaks on my Fender. Wanna hear?” “Sure. And Nick you can play keyboards, right?” “Yeah.”
“So why don’t we get together at Aidan’s place and play some songs?” “Okay. Let’s do it.” From these humble beginnings in a school ground grew a rock band that was to shake the foundations of Australasian music to the degree that we now have a highly experienced, highly talented group of young men who are carving their niche into modern rock music with their unique sound.

The
South African This was a landmark for the group because the studios here also heard the likes of David Bowie, Bryan Adams and Sufjan Stevens put their music tracks to bed. Good for them. They were later signed to Warner Music NZ in September 2008 and they released another single “The Letter” which became the band’s first top 40 hit in NZ in January 2009. It was the number one NZ song on NZ Radio for 11 weeks and peaked at #20 on the NZ singles chart. The group’s first album “The Brave Don’t Run” went gold in NZ after 8 weeks on the charts, selling over 7 500 copies. In June this year the band toured NZ on a major headlining tour in support of their new album. They finished off by featuring at Ohakunes Mountain Mardi Gras Event playing to over 6 000 people. They are currently doing the big cities of Australia and soon, no doubt, they will be heading for the big lights of the US and the UK. Simon Oscroft and Matthew Warman arrived on New Zealand shores with their parents when they were young kids in the mid-nineties. Their parents had decided that there was a better future for them here in NZ. And how right they were! Going to school at Rangitoto High enabled them to meet three other young Kiwi boys who changed their lives for good. This union has created a rock band called “Midnight Youth” made up as follows:Simon Oscroft (Guitar) Jeremy Redmore (Vocals) Matthew Warman (bass) Aidan Bartlett (drums) Nick Campbell (keyboards, guitar) They quickly moved from playing local gigs in night spots and family functions to attracting the interests of local record producers. Their performance at the New Zealand’s high school “Rockquest” competition catapulted them into instant fame during 2006. Then came their big break – internationally acclaimed veteran Australian group INXS chose them as curtain raisers for two of their New Zealand shows during that year. They received rave reviews from these performances and went onto release their first hit single, “Supernatural” which attained immediate airplay on rock music radio stations across NZ. INXS declared that they were the best band that they have ever played with in Australasia. In 2008 the band played the opening slots for OK Go and Incubus in their Auckland shows and travelled to New York to record their debut album “The Brave Don’t Run.”
Here are some comments from musical journalists in New Zealand:“Midnight Youth songs “All on our own” and “The Letter” from their first album “The Brave Don’t Run” is currently receiving an extreme amount of NZ radio time and frankly I am glad. Produced in New York and the first album released by this young Auckland based band, it has ten distinct and refined songs that ring of international standard without too much over processing. This will auger well for the group as they break into the international music market.” Kathleen Green: Amplifier NZ “This young Auckland 5 piece band have dominated the radio with two recent singles – “The Letter” and “All On Our Own” – thanks to their ability to write songs that stick in your head for weeks. Midnight Youth write shamelessly catchy, radio-friendly anthems in the style of bands like Coldplay and U2, and if you want more of the same, their 10 track debut album “The Brave Don’t Run” won’t disappoint. Chris Schulz – Stuff.co.nz All we can say is, well done Midnight Youth, and we wish you much deserved success in the future. Simon and Matt, thank your parents for having the guts to make the extremely difficult move as immigrants to NZ. Believe me, it is no easy feat for anybody!

Running a home business in New Zealand We present part five of this interesting series Heather Douglas
Overcoming the isolation of working from home
H
ow idyllic to work where your longest commute is from the dining room to the spare bedroom - and there’s real coffee on tap all day, the winter sun pours through the window into your office, you can work in your casual wear and call all the shots. No wonder more and more people are taking advantage of the huge advances in technology and the new focus on family commitment and lifestyle creation to jump the corporate ship and work from home. But the undoubted benefits of having a home business go hand-in-hand with a variety of unique challenges. Successful home businesses recognise the problem - and take positive steps to maximise the advantages and overcome the challenges it poses.
Social isolation While in the early stages of working from home it can be difficult to turn away friends who come visiting, a home business can be a lonely enterprise. Without the daily exchanges taken for granted in a workplace, from puerile water cooler gossip to management meetings, it is easy to lose touch with what is going on in the world, with trends and techniques, and with other people’s opinions.
Professional isolation Professionally, too, many home businesses are isolated. Without regular exposure to fresh ideas, current trends and formal training, it is easy soon to fall behind in your area of professional expertise. One of the reasons for this is that it costs relatively more for an individual to subscribe to all the recognised publications, to attend relevant events or invest in individual training.
in publications, and in a variety of other ways as appropriate for your business You will soon find your circle of friends and acquaintances growing; you will be better informed about your field, and find new customers knocking at the door (at least figuratively). Remember, all work and no play make Jack a dull boy - and Jill and equally dull woman. Joining an organisation, club or group which has nothing to do with your work - for instance a sports club, craft class or school board - is a great way to widen your circle of acquaintances, learn new skills, develop other interests and be involved in your community. You’ll be amazed at how many business contacts you make through your involvement, and you’ll be able to talk to friends, family and customers about more than just your work! Working from home will be enjoyable, productive, profitable - and sociable. Article supplied by Home Business New Zealand. Visit www.homebizbuzz. co.nz today for heaps of free information, advice, resources and tools to help make running your business fun, easy and successful - including a free directory listing and monthly newsletter.
Invisibility Another aspect of this isolation is the “invisibility” of many home businesses. Unlike a business with even small premises, home businesses often have no overt presence.
Overcoming isolation So do home business operators sit engrossed in their work, lost and lonely, holed up in their homes, battling to draw customers or make friends? Not a chance! They need to face up to the challenge and find ways to turn the negatives into positives. As with any challenge, recognising the problem is already half the battle won. It’s important not only to recognise if and how you are becoming isolated, but to define what you want to achieve. Depending on your own personality, life situation, significant others (including life or business partners), the nature of your business and your long-term goals, solutions could include steps such as:
• a ttending business gatherings and networking functions • making and keeping contact with a few other local home business operators • joining - and attending gatherings of - their local professional or industry organisation • tapping into business and networking resources both online and offline, such as BizInfo, local Enterprise organisations, Business in the Community (a mentorship programme), HomebizBuzz.co.nz, the local Chamber of Commerce, business women’s groups and so on • reading newspapers and magazines, especially business ones or those focused on your industry or area of expertise • scouring your local library or bookshop for relevant and popular books on business or your specific niche, and reading or at least skimming these • attending training courses, seminars and conferences (and not just the free ones) both on your area of expertise and on business skills • advertising, if you need to, via pamphlets, mail drops, on the Internet,

South African ADVICE FOR NEW IMMIGRANTS
New Immigration Policy - Investor Category by Alistair Van Schalkwyk B.Com/LLB North Shore Immigration
T
he long awaited new business migrant policy has finally been released by immigration New Zealand. Below i s an artic le that may shed some light on the changes that have been made. Should you wish to apply under one of the new revised investor categories or know of someone who would, you are welcome to contact our offices, and arrange a meeting with one of our registered immigration advisors to discuss your options in finer detail.
Business Migrant Update The investor category as we know it has come to an end; however two new categories have been introduced. The new categories are called Investor and Investor Plus. There are significant changes from the old regime although the health and character requirements have been retained. In the First category (Investor), the minimum investment that needs to be maintained over a four year period is NZ$1.5 million dollars. The applicant needs to achieve an IELTS score in English proficiency of at least 3. Thus, only very limited command of the English language is required. There is however also an age restriction. The applicant needs to be less than 65 years of age. Also 40% of the last three years of the investment period must be spent in New Zealand. This category has a quota of 300 slots per annum. This means that should more than 300 applications be received, Immigration New Zealand will most likely select the applicants with the highest score. The Second category (Investor Plus) has a minimum investment threshold of $10 million. The NZ$10 million must be invested in New Zealand over a period of three years. What is really remarkable about this category is that there is no requirement of any English ability (it seems that there is a presumption that such a person will be in a financial position to hire their own interpreters). Furthermore the applicant is not subject to age restrictions

or any business experience. All that is required is for the applicant to spend at least 20% of the last two years of the investment period in New Zealand to be granted residence. Aside from the changes above, the investor category has also seen some improvements. Applicant’s bringing in an extra $500 000 with the promise of hiring at least 3 Kiwi’s should result in a conditional residence permit being issued as soon as the application has been granted. The idea behind these amendments are to simplify the process and relax the English language requirements, in order to attract more affluent immigrants from countries where English is not their first language.
If you have family in SA who want to emigrate…… Tell them about this! North Shore Immigration will be on Tour in South Africa in October 2009. We will be in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. We present free seminars in these centres so that you can meet us and we can explain a little bit about New Zealand and how the immigration process works. Many people try and do their own immigration documentation only to find that they have not completed the forms correctly and then get declined, worst of all when they have arrived in New Zealand and then have to come back to South Africa. We take the worry out of this sometimes harrowing process and also assist you with using reputable immigrant friendly recruitment agencies. Most people need a job and transferable skills. While we are in South Africa you can also book a one on one meeting with our consultants. There is no charge for these meetings but we do need a completed questionnaire, so that we can assess your situation correctly. Everyone is different with different circumstances.
The seminars will be held at: Cape Town: Southern Sun Newlands Hotel main Road Newlands on Thursday 15th October 2009 at 7pm in the conference rooms. Ask at Reception. Durban: Hilton Hotel 12-14 Walnut Street, Durban Central on Monday 19th October 2009 at 7pm first floor conference rooms. Ask at reception. Johannesburg: Protea Balalaika Hotel, 20 Maude Street, Sandton on Thursday 22nd October 2009 at 7pm first floor conference rooms. Ask at reception.
Why Risk being refused Entry to New Zealand? Do You Want To Stay In New Zealand? For a new migrant the prospect of finding the right job that qualifies for a Work Permit and ultimately Permanent Residence and dealing with all the paperwork can be a daunting task. With the current economic crisis it is more important than ever to get it right the first time. Immigration New Zealand will limit the time you have here to achieve your dream of being permitted to stay here permanently, The applications require very detailed, precise and accurate documentation, which can be very challenging to the uninitiated. From the 4th May 2009 only Licensed Immigration Advisers are by law permitted to give Immigration advice. Make sure you talk to the right people and Simona Woodberg IAA Adviser No 200800958 get the right advice by consulting North Shore Immigration Services. Our skilled Licensed Advisers have the knowledge and experience to work through any issue with you and give you the right advice from the start. They will take you step by step through the process and take away all the guesswork. Take the risk out of the process and safeguard against any unnecessary move back to South Africa by letting us assess your circumstances and advise you of your chances of being accepted by New Zealand Immigration. When asked: “How did you first find out about Hobby City?” Most Aucklanders would answer: “Can’t remember. It’s always been there.”
H
obby City began as a little addition to a motorbike shop in the early 80s. It had various homes but finally moved to Quay Street ten years ago. Over the years it has grown to be New Zealand’s largest hobby store. It has seen thousands of customers from all over New Zealand and the world some of whom make regular v i s i t s . E v e n Ro d Stewart, a passionate train enthusiast , made a few visits and found exactly what he was looking for. Daroish and Judy Kraidy bought Hobby City in 20 03. Turnover continued to grow and in 2007 they opened another shop in Albany. “In spite of the risk of starting a second store in Auckland, our gut feeling was that the population growth on the shore could not be ignored. We have doubled our size and sales are contrary to trends of this recession. We believe this is due to our huge range of stock and our excellent sales team who love working at Hobby City. They are focused on giving our customers excellent service.” Daroish and Judy met at Rhodes University and immigrated to New Zealand in 1997. “After six years in Auckland we found ourselves frustrated in our jobs and on a treadmill. So we resigned our jobs and took the kids on a SA adventure. We put them into Southern Cross School for two terms, a private school on a wildlife reserve in Hoedspruit, and we had a six-month holiday touring the country including camping in the Kruger Park for 72 nights. During this time we decided to become self-employed and buy our own business.”
18
Daroish has been a passionate hobbyist since he was a child. “When I was eight years old I saw the plans for a pylon racer in a model magazine. I just knew that I had to build it.” Having built dozens of planes that have grown in size and complexity Daroish also built a full size aerobatic two-seater biplane that he flies out of Ardmore Airport. Precision flying is Daroish’s sport and he competed in his 5th World Precision Flying Championship in Poland in July. His best result was 2nd in 1999. Some of Daroish’s models, including his turbine jet, are hanging up in the Hobby City stores. Hob by Cit y s to c k s a huge range of die-cast and kit model cars, r/c cars, r/c planes, r/c boats and trains as well as all accessories for every branch of modelling. It is New Zealand’s largest model train retailer, one of only three stores in NZ selected to sell the HPI range of nitro cars and trucks and it is NZ’s largest stockist of Scalextric slot cars and sets. Hobby City is NZ’s largest general hobby and model retailer. Hobby City distinguishes itself as a market leader for serious hobbyists. UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS Come and be a part of the vibrant ex- sa community here in Auckland. Join in the fun and help each other by networking effectively. SOCIAL EVENTS: We have a monthly fun social get together at the Browns Bay Bowling Club, Beach Road, Browns Bay on the first Friday evening of each month starting at 6pm. We have a live band doing numbers from yesteryear; lots of traditional SA food (boerewors rolls, biltong etc); jumping castles and
face painting for the kids; pub drinks at club prices and lots of prizes up for grabs. It is a lovely family outing, so bring everybody along including granny and grandpa but leave the dogs at home!
BUSINESS NETWORKING: As new immigrants in a strange new land we need to help each other by promoting our new businesses or special projects amongst each other. We have some well established businesses here run by ex-SA immigrants who pride themselves in the services that they offer. They value your support and by the same token, they need to know what YOU, the new immigrant has to offer.
Bring your business cards to the regular SANZ Business Networking Meetings that are held on the first and third Wednesday of each month at the Browns Bay Bowling Club starting at 6pm. You will be given a chance of introducing yourself to the regular attendees and we will ensure that you are entered on to the SANZ Business data base in order for all members to be able to access your details.

THE SOUTH AFRICAN RECIPE REVUE If you speak to ex-South African immigrants here in New Zealand about this topic, one normally notices a “glazing over” of the eyes and the subject immediately starts salivating. Oops! We have no option than to present here in full colour our version of….
South African Potjiekos!
P
otjiekos has been part of the South African culture for centuries. In fact, since the days of the fist settlement at the Cape it began when food was cooked in a black cast-iron pot hanging from a chain over the kitchen fire. As the settlers decided to move north into new territories, the “Voortrekkers” took with them their “potjie” which was used to cook a stew made of venison and vegetables over an open camp fire which could have included poultry like guinea fowl, or more wilder game like wart hog, bush pig, rabbit or hare. As the Voortrekkers progressed across wild terrain in their “voorwagens,” they were confronted with a wide variety of rich game food that they successfully hunted and added to their “potjie” every night for dinner. The “potjie” was an amazing Cape Dutch concoction that has developed over the years and it is prized as a unique South African form of food preparation that is well preserved in the ex-pat SA conclaves that we find all around the world, including NZ. Here is a typical potjie recipe that you may want to include in your next SA social event with your friends:-

The South African minister of Home Affairs, Mrs Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula was reported saying that the South African government respects the decision by British government, and will continue discussions with them about their concerns on South African passport and border controls. Other countries that will also face strict new visa checks, after failing to pass the UK’s new Visa Waiver test are; Bolivia, Lesotho, Swaziland and Venezuela. Additionally, anyone wishing to travel from these countries, including South Africa via the UK, will require a transit visa. The good news for visitors from these countries are that there are ways to obtain multiple-entry visitor visas to the UK, and citizens from these countries should endeavour to obtain these to avoid the requirement needed to obtain a visa on each occasion of travel to the UK.
