I
would like to thank those who supported our Charity Auction. Once again Kern & Cindi Breaux chaired the auction because they have had friends who have died from ovarian cancer. This year we had another successful auction to support the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. Some of the special items were Marv Smith’s lathe-turned vases and Rachel Johnson’s glass work. We also had the never-ending, very-last Steve McQueen poster. The supply of Tommy Bahama’s large size shirts (no medium sizes available) generated some high-stakes bidding, with Randy Vidmar usually being the winning bidder at the end. Lauren Fleming’s Daymon Nightingale’s & Marie Smith’s cookies were a coveted auction item and served as dessert for most of us. The large variety of Porsche and non-Porsche auction items contributed to the overall success of the event. Best of all was the auctioneering entertainment team of Kirk Bradford & Larry Wilson, which took the numerous items and generated the “hype” which sold them to the highest bidders. Special thanks go to those members who came to enjoy the show and bought the auction items. With all these efforts we were able to raise over $5,000 for club’s and Kern & Cindi’s selected charity. Since a small fee was charged to offset the cost of the refreshments, all of the proceeds from the event will go to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. At our last board meeting, the subject of The Drifter publishing was once again addressed. Over the last ten years or so we have had a very good “deal” in getting The Drifter printed. A couple of years ago our printer sold the company, and the cost of printing went up dramatically. The 2006 board also addressed the cost of The Drifter and took measures to minimize the impact on the club’s budget. This year we budgeted a loss for the year; this loss was basically caused by the cost of printing and mailing The Drifter. Our dues rebate from PCA-National is supposed to finance the operation of the club in the membership and newsletter areas. This is not really the case, and so the 2007 board again addressed the issue of our budget. It was felt that our events should not subsidize the publishing of the Drifter. The cost should be borne by the members who want to keep receiving the printed version in their mailbox. The discussion did go back and forth with regard to imposing a subscription fee. But in the end it was decided to implement a subscription fee for the printed and mailed version of The Drifter. Starting with the January issue of The Drifter, a $15.00 subscription fee will be implemented. The subscription form will be sent out with 2008 board of directors ballot and must be returned to the treasurer no later than December 15th to be sure that subscriptions begin with the January 2008 issue. The process will be further defined in a Drifter subscription notice that will accompany the ballot.

Drifting back – November 2007 by Larry Wilson
30 Years Ago (November 1977) Willard Jones hosted the 4th Annual Pot Luck Dinner, November 4 at The Bluffs, and member Peter Bogy got us a special rate on Buffalo Beer (he was part-owner of Sacramento’s own beverage). Al King said, “the fine chefs of SVR did it again,” referring to the fine array of hot dishes, salads, and desserts. Kirk Bradford took particular interest in the gourmet brownies that he said, “were beyond description.” Dave and Chrissie Neukom, among others, stayed late to help with the cleanup. On November 11-13, the annual SVR pilgrimage to Little River Inn and the rest of the Mendocino Coast, AKA the Mendocino Tour, was chaired by Marv Smith (with Marie’s help) and promised wine tasting and lunch at Simi Winery plus scenic roads and gourmet dining on Friday; and on Saturday the agenda was breakfast at Cafe Beaujolais or Sea Gull, Mendocino shopping, botanical gardens, golf, beach combing, free style Frisbee, kite flying competition and a beach cookout at Little River Beach; and Sunday only a leisurely return with dinner at the Mark West. Randy Blaesi took a wrong turn within ten minutes of the start with Jerry Moore in tow. Spirited CB talk got them back. The wind was lacking for the kite contest, dealing a blow to winning aspirations of Kirk Bradford. Some thought Ted and Diane Colbert cheated when they used their 911 Targa as a launch vehicle. Peter Bogy used the dark to his advantage, somehow keeping it up. Rik and Lettie Larson and Dave and Chrissie Neukom were co-winners for the “prettiest/most expensive” kites. Wyn and Linda Robertson’s kite was “most mechanically elaborate.” Bill Florence got the award for “longest flying time with least effort.” Later, Bill Rhea hosted a gala party at the Mendocino Hotel. Ken and Betty Fielding and Al and Kathy King enjoyed the party. Pat and Larry Wilson’s kite was first up (and, unfortunately first down). The November 18th “I Road a Turkey, Too” rally, was a nighttime event, the last SVR rally in 1977, and was coordinated by Nancy Myeron with Sparky Koepsell advertised as rallymistress. Sixty cars, including twelve from SVR, were entered, and SVR trophy winners included Mike and Mary Peters, Ted Strutz, Larry and Gloria Dunn, and Bill and Betty Rhea. Two days later,
the November 20th Low Bucks Autocross at Lot A, Cal-Expo, with Peter Bogy and Kerry Creasy as co-chairs, ended SVR’s autocross season for 1977. 20 Years Ago (November 1987) The November 8th “Time Never Stops” rallymaster Stan Breyfogle predicted rain and thus put two checkpoints under bridges to keep the crew nice and dry. Surprise: it was sunny and warm for the fifteen rally cars and the checkpoint crews. After starting at the Beverly Garland Hotel, rally teams encountered two checkpoints before reaching the campsite John Fremont used during the Bear Flag Revolt (rallies can be educational, too). After four hours, rally cars reached the finish at Pietro’s Pizza in Woodland. The results for SVR cars: Sally & Ron Boeck 1st Overall and 1st Unequipped; Dolores & Allen Weddle 1st Novice; Don Rasmusson & Gerry Sekora 6th Novice; John & Tina Murphy 2nd Beginner; Jim McMahon & Joyce Low 3rd Beginner. Workers included Rik Larson, John Clever, J. Toney, Kay Bussell, Pat & Larry Wilson, and Helen Ashuckian. After days of rain, the November 15th Lighthouse Tour was blessed with clear, sunny skies as nine cars left the Beverly Garland for the coast with Ken and Marcella Mitchell in the lead car. They picked up their tour mistress, Suzanne Plantz, in Vacaville, rounding out the group to ten cars. After a stop at the Cheese Factory for supplies, they reached their picnic destination, the Point Reyes Lighthouse. On foot, from the parking lot, it is down 308 steps and across two skateboard ramps, exactly. The down part was easy. The up part coming back was exhausting. This tour required strong legs. Lettie Larson fed the seagulls attracting the entire gull population from 25 miles around. They especially liked Ken Mitchell’s silver 914-4.

Zone 7 Rep Bud Behrens and Glenn Hills tied in a hard-fought battle for the pleasure of awarding a second place autocross trophy to Dwight Mitchell. 10 Years Ago (November 1997) The October 31st, November 1st and 2nd Mendocino Tour, chaired by Rik Larson, had a new wrinkle - a Halloween party complete with a costume party/contest. Class winners of the costume thing were the Vidmars (Most In Character as Donald and Daisy Duck), the Meuniers (Most Becoming Clowns), the Wades (Most Scariest), the Thomases (Most Intimidating Bikers), and Mike West and Catherine Jones (Most Original as Indiana Jones and Cat). Kite fliers of note included Greg Peart, Mike and Sue Ambrozewicz, Patti and Jerry Thomas, Horace Searce and Noreen Schubnell, Tom and Tambra Kroetz, and Dolores Weddle.

“Turkey Run 1997,” chaired by Richard Wetzel on November 16th, was the final event of the 1997 Zone 7 Rally Series, and it was a near-sweep, with SVR members taking first place in three of the four rally classes. Phil Lawrence and Kathleen Reilly shocked the regular rally types by taking first in the Beginner class with a score of 660. Bob Kittell and Rik Larson took first in the Expert Unequipped class with 303, and in Expert Equipped, Helen Ashuckian and J. Toney did their usual thing by winning their class and overall with a score of 60. Bob and Marianne Gardner of Golden Gate Region won the Novice class with a score of 233. The rally route traversed the towns of Esparto, Capay, Brooks, Tancred, Guinda, and Rumsey. Drifter coverage of the November 22nd Zone 7 awards banquet was kind of skimpy, but the big news, of course, was that SVR’s Masuo Robinson was named the Zone 7 Enthusiast of the Year. That’s Mr. Speed, himself, and he hasn’t slowed down to this very day. SVR also did modestly well with first-place autocross class awards given to Bill Winkler (class KI), Masuo Robinson (class LI), and Tim Fleming (class HP). It was the overall awards for the rally series that might tickle your fancy. SVR member Helen Ashuckian scorched the field with a score of 970 points to win the overall Zone 7 rally championship for 1997. Hubert Lee of Golden Gate Region was second with a score of 875. Other SVR finishers were J. Toney in 3rd (870 points), Richard Wetzel in 5th (815 points), and Rik Larson in 8th (785 points).

Great roads, great food & great bier

T
he Oktoberfest Tour, hosted by Keith McMahan and Mary Dachauer, was a memorable day of twisty roads and beautiful scenery, followed by an evening of German cuisine and revelry. When Keith handed out three pages of route instructions at the drivers’ meeting and explained that Mary wasn’t along on the tour because she was home preparing for the Oktoberfest, it became clear that this hadn’t been a simple event to plan and execute.
Registration was in the showroom at Niello Porsche on Granite Drive in Rocklin. Upon arrival, Keith was pleasantly surprised to see a large table covered with freshly baked donuts and hot coffee for our group, courtesy of Niello. Everyone enjoyed munching, sipping, chatting with friends and checking out the beautiful cars, two in particular, a striking black GT3 RS with orange trim and a meteor grey Turbo cabriolet. During the drivers’ meeting, Keith explained that we wouldn’t be traveling in one group, due to narrow, winding mountain roads. Grouping was further impeded by canyons and ridges, which rendered walkie-talkies useless. Instead, we’d regroup along the way at Colfax, Forest Hill and French Meadows. This plan worked fine, both for faster drivers and for drivers preferring a slower pace. Leaving Niello Porsche at 9:30 sharp, we cruised Interstate 80, pausing at Colfax, then turned south onto Iowa Hill Road. In a series of tight hairpins, Iowa Hill road drops quickly to the North Fork of the American River. The road gives a good idea of the challenges 49ers faced, hauling supplies across 1,500-footdeep canyons to mines in the American River drainage. A few of us stopped at the campground next to the river to use the little houses. A Placer County deputy stopped next to us and carefully checked out our cars. Smiling, he explained he had driven Porsches for years, then asked where we were going and whether we minded his following us. Even though no longer a Porsche owner, he still admires a line of beautiful cars. Next, we passed through Iowa Hill, high atop the ridge separating the North and Middle Forks of the American. Between
1853 and 1920, local miners removed $20 million of gold (calculated at then current rates) from the abundant quartz. All that remains now are a few houses, a historical monument in front of a bank vault with an iron door, and an ancient grocery store with sun-bleached grey siding, a wooden porch and sleeping dog. Iowa Hill Road follows the ridge through open, sunlit meadows and dark, thick stretches of trees, eventually reaching Forest Hill Road and our second regrouping. Forest Hill, a former lumbering town just 20 minutes from Auburn, is enjoying a revival due to an influx of retirees. It contains a fine museum, a beautiful city park, a new school and three beer/ wine bars referred to as the Bermuda Triangle. Over the past decade, several restaurants have opened, but none survived. We appreciated the chance to stretch our legs in the warm sun and mingle. Preparing to leave, Keith instructed us to head west on Forest Hill Road for 1⁄10 mile, and then turn left onto Mosquito Ridge Road, confirming the written instructions he had given us. We left in two groups, my car in the middle of the second. I merrily steered along, enjoying the scenery and nattering with the navigator, my wife Alice. But about two miles along Forest Hill Road, I suggested that we might have missed our turn. I pulled onto a wide, paved shoulder as did the trailing Porsches and watched the lead cars disappear over the next hillcrest. As we sheepishly U-turned, the former lead cars re-appeared and joined the rear of our line. Just can’t beat following instructions… Mosquito Ridge Road twists through canyons and around ridges, while dropping into the Middle Fork of the American. Turning onto the exhilaratingly steep, single lane Ralston Ridge Road just above the River, we soon found ourselves next to a 19th century PG&E power plant, still in use. The original giant Pelton wheel, long since replaced with turbines, stands next to the plant. Ralston Ridge Road travels northeast along the flank of Ralston Ridge, gradually climbing into the high Sierras. As we ascended to a snowy 6.000 feet, pot holes were evidence of repeated freezing and provided a fine test of visual acuity and hand-eye coordination. Temperatures were cool – 44 degrees at one stretch through a canyon – but even with the top down we were comfortable under the warm sun. What great driving: clear fall air, vistas of deep canyons and high ridges, vertical rock walls on one side of the road and air on the other. Driving was made all the more interesting by the occasional absence of shoulders, unless one counts the three-inch

white line at road’s edge that separates asphalt from open space. Concentrating on setting up for corner entry, accelerating out of the curve and setting up for the next, I mildly regretted missing the scenery. I glanced at my dear navigator, who was also missing it, having slid down in the seat as far as possible, staring straight ahead to avoid looking out the side and into the abyss. At French Meadows, Keith had negotiated use of the Gates Group picnic area, normally closed this time of year. A break in the trees had allowed the previous night’s snowfall to melt off most of the picnic tables. Sheltered from the wind and warmed by the fall sun, we were a comfortable lot, even at 55 degrees and exactly 5,280 feet.
Party time! A 15-minute zip along Yankee Jims and Spring Valley Roads brought us to Keith and Mary’s lovely home, decorated with a large Porsche flag above the front entrance. Picnic tables topped with vases of flowers were set up on a beautiful new deck, facing the warm late-afternoon sun. During social hour, we chose from four brands of beer and Radler Shandy (mixture of beer & lemon soda), and munched Brezeln mit Obatzen (pretzels with Camembert, cream cheese, whipped cream, onions & spices), while comparing notes on the day’s tour. For the main course we enjoyed grilled bratwurst topped with sautéed onions, Rotkohl (red cabbage), Kartoffel Salat (potato salad), and Sauerkraut (sour white cabbage). For dessert, Apfelstrudel (apple strudel) and fresh coffee. Delicious.
Before departing, Keith explained the options for the return route: Visit the Placer County Grove of Redwoods or take a docent-led tour of the Forest Hill Museum. Most selected the museum, possibly anticipating wet ground and snow at the Grove. We returned via Mosquito Ridge Road, smooth, winding and two lanes, but not without its own hazards. Friday night rains had loosened sharp rocks and tree branches from the cliffs above. At one point a fallen tree blocked half the road. Rounding a tight left hairpin, I barely dodged a pyramid shaped, softball sized rock. At the Oktoberfest, another driver, who spotted the rock a fractional second later, described how it rumbled along the underside of his car. After we regrouped at the museum, Keith provided final instructions, and then headed home to help with Oktoberfest preparations.
What a great day! Keith and Mary’s tour was scenic, fun and challenging to drive; the Gates picnic site was warm and sunny, even with some snow on the ground; the museum was interesting, the Oktoberfest enjoyable and food excellent. Either the tour or Oktoberfest alone would have been a significant undertaking – but two events on the same day required flawless planning and hard work. Thank you, Keith and Mary. We had a wonderful and memorable time. Also, thank you, Nancy Coburn and Niello Porsche, for their thoughtful surprise of hot coffee and donuts. P. S. Consider rerunning the route, but taking time to stop at the numerous scenic vistas and interesting spots, including the old PG&E power plant, French Meadows reservoir and the Placer County Grove of Redwoods.

SVR annual charity auction

W
hat a gorgeous day it was! And what a lot of fun was had by all who attended this event. There were some firsts and there were some lasts. First, the firsts. The weather was perfect, and the group included thirteen members of SVR who had not attended the event before. The items that were donated for the auction were the best quality I have seen over the last five years. As ever, the banter among the audience and the auctioneers was as fantastic as, even though there weren’t many, if any, medium-size Tommy Bahama shirts up for auction. And then “I don’t want those f______g horses,” (which got even Marie Smith laughing), was entertainment worth whatever was spent.
As usual, the wooden bowls made be Marv Smith brought in about 35% of the record-breaking net $5,330 raised in the auction this year. Rachel Johnson’s glass pieces and the Stark’s condo stay raised about 20% of the total.
For the last 26 years Kirk Bradford and Larry Wilson have been the auctioneers extraordinaire at this event; their talents and skills have been honed to a fine edge to get the maximum for the auctioned items. Without their help this event would not be what it has become. In fact, one of the attendees commented that the last time he attended the charity auction, the highlight of the event was the volleyball game. I cannot even remember how long ago that has been. Now for the lasts. Unfortunately, this will be the last year of Marv Smith’s bowls. His health is taking its toll on him, and he is in his 90s. This year will be the last time Cindi and I will chair the event, which we have hosted for a number of years, the last five being held at our home. Over those years, SVR has raised over $31,100 for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, and we feel blessed to have been a part of that effort. Members of this club have dug deep into their pockets and into their hearts for the women of this organization. There are not enough words to express our thanks to the members of SVR who have been a part of this event. There is a saying, “It’s not what you get out of life, but what you give.” SVR members have given generously back to the community. Thank you all. Kern & Cindi Breaux

SVR’s first photo rally results by Ann Hamel
S
eventeen teams participated in the SVR Photo Rally on Sept 16, 2007; twelve of the teams were driving Porsches and ten of the teams were SVR members. Each team was given a list of twenty-five items that had to be photographed within 21⁄2 hours. Extra points were given for having both team members and the vehicle in the photo instead of the required one member and vehicle. If there was more than one item in a photo, the team was also given extra points. A beta test run was done one month prior to the event to ensure that the rally was “doable.” I thought these teams were competitive. Boy, was I wrong! Before the time limit was up teams were rolling into the Garden and Arts Center at McKinley Park. There were big smiles on their faces and stories to tell. We had a hard time keeping up with downloading all the camera memory cards, but managed to get all of them downloaded for a slideshow presentation. The following awards were presented:

A secret “Best Photo” was determined after the event by the event committee. We selected Keith McMahan with his “Bridge over Water” photo because of his creative photography skills. This photograph was printed, framed and mailed to him. Congratulations Keith. (Three runner-up photos were also selected-see additional photos) The most points awarded to any single photo was three points; one for the first item (pulling a trailer), ½ point for three other items (railroad crossing sign, bridge over water, and the state capital in the background) and ½ point for both members being in the photo. In addition to a barbecue of brats, side dishes and drinks, candy bars with “Photo Rally” wrappers were given out to all participates. CDs of all team photos were mailed out to everyone shortly after the event. Although it took a lot of hard work, I learned a great deal from hosting my first event. I encourage other newer members to step up and get involved. It is an excellent way to get to know other club members and make new friendships. One team recommended that the club make this an annual event. I’m thinking you just might see this event on the calendar next year. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank my committee members: Dave & Kaye Mitchell, Jeff & Jennifer Nowling, and my loving husband Matt for all their efforts towards putting on this event.

Carrera de Sierra XXX

T
he 30th running of the two-day Carrera de Sierra event saw several other aspects return after an absence of a couple of years: a touring group and Goose’s Walking Rally. We convened at Niello Porsche in Rockin, our starting point for the rally and the tour. Richard Wetzel served as rallymaster for the TSD (time-speed-distance) event and Steve and Barbara McCrory were the tourmasters (i.e. no rallying, no checkpoints). A different route was taken by the tour folks to the overnight in Truckee than did the rally folks. Steve and Barbara provided a great tour up California 49 thru the gold rush towns of Donnieville, Sierra City, etc. It turned out that the Sunday TSD route would follow this same route but in reverse. Those on the rally made their way to Truckee via Foresthill, Colfax, Alta, Soda Springs, and the shoreline of Donner Lake. And, of course, we had rain (not bad, but it made driving interesting). The traditional social hour at the hotel (with the sun shining through) also included the opportunity to test out your walking skills at 6000 feet. Phillip “Goose” Marks set up a short course that allowed you to test your walking and timing skills. Jessica Toney was the big winner (by more than 31 seconds) over all of the other entrants. She received a nice bottle of wine for her efforts at the BBQ finish on Sunday afternoon in Loomis. At 8:30 A.M. on Sunday morning the TSD folks departed, while the tour folks did not leave until after 10:00 A.M. (remember, this is a tour). The TSD folks again encountered rain as they made their way back to the Sacramento area (via Calpine, Donnieville, Grass Valley, and Loomis). The Sunday barbecue finish was held at a park in Loomis (a covered facility just in case it might rain). Mike Willis handled the barbecue, with Cookie Anderson, Gerry Cupler, and Helen Ashuckian making sure that everyone received enough to eat and drink. A number of folks attended who we had not seen in several years competed in the TSD rally. They included Mark Perry and Brenda Parker of the old ARL - Associated Rallyists Ltd group in Sacramento and Penny and Bob Paauwe from the Miata group. We were entertained again this year by Jerry Karr and Eric Chevreuil, who ran last year in a green MG without a working odometer. This year they ran in a bright orange Fiat Abarth 850 TC. And they still max’ed every leg. It was interesting to watch Ron Boeck scrutinize this car at the start. Ron had the very same model car (but in green) as his first car. What memories. Rallymaster Richard Wetzel had some nice traps built into the course for both days of the competition. No one got lost and everyone made it to the finish on Saturday and Sunday. The 31st running of this event is already in the planning stages for next September. Come out and enjoy the great times. We expect to even have a tour group again where folks do not have to compete in the time and distance rally but still enjoy the Saturday overnight, social, barbecue, etc. We also thank Frank’s Automotive and Wells Fargo Bank (Richard Wetzel) for their support. G24 takes over the Towe
Tree decorating and potluck at theTowe Auto Museum

O
n September 8th we took over the Towe Auto Museum in Sacramento. We had quite a nice showing of new members as well as board members. Following introductions, we heard about some of our upcoming events and watched part of the Porsche film “Made by Hand.” Time only allowed for a small portion of the film because we had a specially guided tour of the entire museum. Lots of photos were taken and we heard nothing but good things about the tour. All SVR members should visit the Towe if they haven’t already done so. Show your PCA membership card and get free admission into the museum. Thanks to our new members for such a nice turnout. We hope to see you all again at the Towe Auto Museum on Sunday, November 25th for our annual Christmas tree decorating party and pot luck. Bring an entrée, side dish, salad or dessert and enjoy lots of food, decorating and great people. Everyone in the club is invited as well as our new members and don’t forget to bring a decoration to put on the tree. It could be a car item, photo or anything you choose. The year is almost over for the 2007 G24 season, so make a date for December 25nd to finish the year off right and we’ll see everyone then.

ave Sunday, November 25th on your calendar to join with your Sacramento Valley PCA friends in decorating the SVR Christmas tree at the Towe Auto Museum. This is an annual event; we’ll be joining fifteen or more local car clubs in decorating the trees and ending the afternoon with a potluck. Those of you who have not participated in this event before will find it a very enjoyable way to spend the afternoon with your friends and to kick off the holiday season. Last year we had about fifty of our members join in the fun. Tree decorating starts at 2:00 P.M. and the potluck starts around 4:00 P.M. For the Potluck, if your last name starts with A– J we are asking that you bring a main dish (casseroles, spaghetti, KFC); if your last name starts with K-R please bring a side dish or salad (rolls, vegetables, green or fruit salad); and if your last name starts with S-Z please bring a desert (brownies, cookies, cakes, pie). The Towe has a refrigerator and microwave available. resident Mike WIllis called the meeting to order at 7:03 P.M. Attending: Kim Nelson, Rik Larson, Kevin Dougherty, Matt Deter, Helen Ashuckian, Jeff & Kim Kinder, Kern Breaux, Frederick Rauch, Mike Willis, John Murphy, Dick MacFarlane, Ray Silva and Mark Judish. The September minutes were previously reviewed and accepted.
New Business • 2008 Niello Porsche Support: Kim will meet with the Niello folks regarding the 2008 Niello/SVR budget and review 2007. A discussion ensued about Drifter ad rates, not only for Niello Porsche, but also for all advertisers. An analysis will be done in 2008 after the new distribution procedure is in place. There may be a rate increase in 2009. • Article Corrections: Niello has asked that errors in a recent Drifter be corrected. • 2008 Zone Calendar: Major events should be worked out to avoid conflicts with other regions. • Toy Drive: Dick MacFarlane will be in charge of a toy drive at Sunrise Mall on Saturday December 1, 2008 from 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Other car clubs will be present. The Salvation Army will collect the toys. Old Business • Drifter Subscriptions: A discussion ensued regarding The Drifter and how to determine who wants to continue receiving The Drifter in the mail and who would like to receive it electronically only. A letter will accompany the ballots informing members that beginning in February 2008 a subscription fee of $15.00 will be charged for the monthly printed Drifter. A full-page notice will be published in the December and January issues. The same amount of Drifters will be delivered; some will just be delivered electronically. All advertisers will continue to receive at least the same number of extra copies. • Bounced Checks: All have been made good; the bank fees were paid or waived. Board Member Reports • CRAB (Mark Judish): A preliminary budget was presented. Mark is still getting figures from committee chairs. Mike requested a registration form for the Zone Presidents meeting in November. Mike suggested a $25.00 discount for early registration rather than $10.00. We are looking at around $165.00 per person with $140.00 for early registration. A Friday night dinner will be included. The committee is looking at putting the program in the March issue of The Drifter. Help is needed in a couple of areas. • Advertising (Dick MacFarlane): Dick asked how the new Drifter distribution would affect the advertising. He would like to increase the number of ads. Four companies are waiting for advertising space, and he would like to work on getting more. He was given the O.K. to do so. It was suggested that advertisers be notified of the availability of The Drifter online worldwide. • Competition (Matt Deter): October 27 & 28 is the next Autocross Event. The last one was a little low on the attendance, with twenty-seven drivers. Forty drivers is the break-even point so we lost a few bucks. All SVR entrants to the Ledson Winery Concours won first place in their classes • Driver Education (Frederick Rauch): A “Taste of the Track” program is being offered to attract more novices. It includes a ride in the instructor’s car, a T-shirt, lunch with drivers and instructors. The fee is $30.00. The first “Taste of the Track” will be on November 10th at Thunderhill. Other regions have had success with such a program.
• Drifter (Bud Behrens): New member Gary Chu has expressed interest in being the new Drifter editor. He has experience, is computer savvy and has assistance in editing. • Financial Report (Betty Silva): The club is in good shape. Mike asked Betty to give the board an update on our budget year-to-date to see where we are. • Membership Director (Rik Larson): Rik is preparing for the new member tour on October 13th. Having problems with the national folks. There are sixty cars going on the Mendocino tour. • Social (Cookie Anderson): October 21st Mystery Wine Tour is coming up. Matt gave an overview of the Oktoberfest Tour to Foresthill and was quite impressed, as were others on the tour. • Rally (Helen Ashuckian): Those who attended the Photo Rally had fun. Our rallies are open to all cars, not just Porsches. • G24 (Kim Nelson): Had a great event at the Towe. The last event of the year will be the Christmas tree decorating party and potluck dinner at the Towe on November 25h.. John was put in charge of a CD of photos of SVR Members and their cars for the potluck. The Mustang Club will be taking the lead on the party. • Christmas Party (Kim Nelson): Plans for the party on December 15th was discussed at Niello. It will be BYOB party, and have the same band as last year. The fee is $35.00 per person. • Goodie Store (Tom Sisson): There were some sales this month. • Webmaster (John Murphy): The site gets a spike at lunchtime and on weekends. Google is feeding our site in a big way. Another way folks make their way to our website is through a library site associated with the Chilean government. • Vice President (Kern Breaux): There were 45-50 folks at the charity auction. A total of $5,545 was taken in and after expenses $5,330 will be donated. This will be the last year for the Breaux’s to host it as they have made $31,000 plus over the past five years. Kern did a calendar update and went over end-of-the year stuff. Nominations were made for the “Event of the Year.” • Past President (Jeff Kinder): 2008 board nominees are: Mike Willis - President, Bill Keegan - Vice President, Kim Nelson - Secretary, Ray Silva - Treasurer, Frederick Rauch - Competition and Safety Director, Cookie Anderson - Social Director, Rik Larsen - Membership • President: It is worth considering an alternative to the traditional dinner meeting format because only about twenty couples are now participating in them, and usually the same people. Denim shirts and sweatshirts are getting hot as the weather cools. Check the website for all the logos you can get. How about Christmas gifts? Car badges - you need badges! They fit nicely into a stocking, maybe better than the owner’s foot! Only $15.00 for SVR and $18.00 for PCA. Don’t forget we have to order a lot of our items because we just can’t carry a big inventory. Also, we have to order four clothing items to get the one you want as our vendor uses a four-head machine. ORDER EARLY!! And why do we call pirates “buccaneers?” If you think there’s some sort of romantic origin to this word, think again. It has nothing to do with swish, swash or buckle. The word buccaneer comes from the “Spanish Main” in days of yore. It arose in the 17th century and was derived from the French verb, “boucaner,” to cure meat, as in putting the flesh out on a wooden rack to dry. Pirates preserved meat in this manner so that they could store it on long voyages. It is thus not swordplay that figures in the origins of “buccaneer,” but knife and fork play. A
couple of weeks ago an unsigned “Open letter to the Club” was sent to the newsletter editors in Zone 7, ostensibly for publication. One of the editorial policies of The Drifter (and any other responsible publication) is not to publish articles, advertisements, letters, etc. from anonymous sources. The general theme of the letter is about volunteerism and how important it is to the success of an organization such as Sacramento Valley Region. Since some good points were made in the letter, here are a few of them (paraphrased):
• Volunteers to do things for the club for the pleasure of it; no one gets paid. • Don’t criticize a volunteer unless you’re willing to become one. • Constructive criticism is O.K. if made tactfully. • Expressions of thanks to those who volunteer are always welcome.
The last point is especially valid when one looks back over the number of high-quality SVR events during 2007 that were conceived, planned, and executed by our members. One wonders how many of us who enjoyed those events took time to thank those who were responsible for their success.
