Spring has sprung; daffodils are in bloom. Are we having any fun yet? Sacramento Valley Region Calendar is so full of activities! What an exciting year! As President I promised everyone a full year of events and we pulled it off. When I say โweโ I mean you and everyone that has taken time out of their busy schedules to plan these great events and attend them.
The Porsche Club has always had a deep commitment to charity. We have had Toy Runs, Food Collections and even Highway clean-ups. Our biggest event has been our charity auction. A core group of dedicated members has made this a successful event year after year. We need more participation and awareness.

Babette Hatten, SVR Social Director, has been working hard these last few months getting tour and dinner packets out to all chair people for upcoming events. As soon as you get your packet, please go through it and read what she has sent you. It is very important to get your budgets approved by the board three or even four months before your event to guarantee a spot in the Drifter. You will not be able to advertise your event until your budgets have been approved by the board.

New โA Charity Basket Auctionโ at our monthly dinner meetings we will do a two minute auction with one basket of goodies sold off. 100% of the proceeds go to charity. In January Cookie Anderson started the Basket Parade with a tea theme. Judy Hanna had high bid to take the first one home. February had a truly wonderful Valentine Basket with champagne to truffles designed and donated by Rita Hoofard. After spirited bidding Dolores Weddle won.
The Racerโs Group and Adobe Road Tour was a sell out. This was a lifetime experience to be among the guys that specialize in the Thank you Basket donors Cookie and Rita and many thanks to Porsche GT3 racecars. One can only dream of the experience and our successful bidders, Judy and Dolores. Frederick Rauch made it possible. I want to thank Frederick and The Racerโs Group for making this dream come true. Lodi, Locke and Beyond and Mystery Tour was put on by Andy and Dianna Leight. Those that went had loads of fun. Thank you, Andy and Dianna. March dinner at Fatโs in Folsom was a full house. Food was delicious and everyone enjoyed visiting with their Porsche friends. Our surprise guest was Collin & Elaine Fat. We want to give a special thanks to Collin for supplying complimentary wine for the tables. In closing just remember the SVR Porsche Club wouldnโt be successful unless we have members that are willing to step forward, donate their time and plan special events for us. These members plan months ahead so that their events can be a success. When you attend these events please take time and express your thanks to the chairperson and let them know if you had any fun. Donโt forget our Board Meetings are the last Wednesday of the month, 6:30 pm at RPM 3130 Bradshaw Rd, Sacramento. Members are welcome to attend.

SVR Springtime in Saratoga Winery Tour on Saturday April 4th Tour fee is $6 per person (pp) Bring your own lunch. We will meet by 8:30 AM at the Starbucks off I-5 (Pocket Road) at 1441 Meadowview Road for driving instructions. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the historic Picchetti Winery; one of Californiaโs oldest wineries with a large picnic area featuring award-winning wines from five different regions. After our picnic & tasting weโll drive along curvy roads to Savannah-Chanelle Winery for our private tour and more tasting where, they produce premium Zinfandel, Syrah, exceptional Pinot Noir and other wines. Our โofficial tourโ ends here at ~4 PM. We have an overnight option if you would like to stay in the area. The Embassy Suites-Santa Clara offers 2 room suites, complimentary cocktails at 5:30 PM, and a cooked to order breakfast in the morning for $119 per room, $114 for AAA members and only $104 for seniors over 62. We would also highly recommend a walking tour of the 15 acre Japanese Hakone Gardens ($5 pp) on Sunday morning after our complimentary breakfast. Weidmanโs Wheels and Foothills Tour Sunday April 19th Taking little used back roads past Camp Far West, around Beale AFB toward Smartville, weโll enjoy fine Porsche roads (some straight- away runs and lots of curves). Meet at Niello in Rocklin at 8:00AM for an 8:30AM departure, stopping for a quick rest stop at the Bridgeport Covered Bridge Park (about half way) and then into the foothills and the forests for a good morning run back to Oroville. About 130 miles total run. Pack a picnic lunch for the park in Oroville (there are also lots of fast food sites in Oroville) and then a guided tour by Harvey Weidman of his world famous โWeidmanโs Wheel Worksโ. Harvey and his crew specialize in repair and restoration of Porsche and other exotic wheels. Harvey has years of experience refinishing wheels and will share his expertise in making old wheels look new, using anodizing, painting, powder coating and polishing. 30 Years Ago (April 1979)
SVR odds โnโ ends: โFoolโs Gold,โ the name of SVRโs April 1st rallye/tour, chaired by Trische Robertson and Diane Colbert, took 14 cars from Folsom to Coloma (only 7 avoided off-course deviations) for a scrumptious dinner at the historic Vineyard House. In his May DRIFTER article, Activities Chair Stan Breyfogle said the April 7 Tech Session at Lasher Porsche-Audi was great entertainment, and educational as well, with Dwight Mitchell and Mike Willis expounding on brake, clutch, shock, and transmission matters. The April 8th Zone 7 AX by Redwood Region held at Solano Community College, Fairfield, was named โHornblowerโs Specialโ and appropriately chaired by Emmett Wilder. The SVR new members party at The Mushroom, April 11, attracted new members George and Nona Morley, Nancy and Bob Kilburn, Rob Scherer, Al and Lettie Feuerstein, Carol Webber, Jim Crow, and Ron Posey. Old members helping with the meet and greet included C.C. and Launa Craig, Bess Feil, Cindi and Kern Breaux, Stan Breyfogle, Geary Lyons, Mike and Vicki Willis, Michael and Mary Peters, Lendine and Bill Nelson, Dwight and Linda Mitchell, Sally Weddle, Joyce Karver, and Paul Baldarelli. The April 20-22, CRAB 8 event, Mike and Vicki Willis, chairs, was a great success with 140 cars registered (a record at the time). The Friday headliner was the first ever after-sundown gymkhana by Paul Bates with the course outlined by 100 construction blinker lights. No headlights allowed. Dale Bates and Julie Arnold won in the dark. Delores and Sally Weddle won the Friday tour, and after 150 drivers did their best at CalExpo, Emmett Wilder, Redwood Region, was the fastest, and wife Marlese the fastest woman, both in the ex-Reitmeir 914-6. Sally Weddle won the Snidely Whiplash Bass Ackwards Award. Competition was stiff as 90 rally-cars made their way into the Delta and Club Lido, downtown Ryde, and the expanding communities of Walnut Grove and Locke. Overall winners were the Unequipped entry of Dale Newhouse and Carol Anne Powell with an error of 81 seconds.
20 Years Ago (April 1989)
April 2 Muir Woods Tour by Randy & Marcy Vidmar and Phil & Jean Keith promised a fresh morning walk through natureโs wonderland, Muir Woods in Marin County followed by a picnic at Stinson Beach. Those who enjoyed the Vidmar/Keith production included Richard and Linda Dern, Herb and Jan Hoover, Kirk and Linda Bradford, Marion Berriman, Suzanne Plantz, Jim McMahen, Pat and Larry Wilson, Allen and Dolores Weddle, Ron and Sally Boeck, and Gary and Alma Thompson. The April DRIFTER featured stories about two SVR racers, each from a different racing era: Arnold OโShields, in his 1966 Porsche 911, won the 1988 San Francisco Region, SCCA, GT-2 class championship after defeating his opposition in a year-long battle at Sears Point and Laguna Seca race courses; and Oran Crumley, who in the early 1960s raced his 1954 Porsche 356 Carrera (4-cam) Speedster in C-Production SCCA races at Vaca Valley, Cotati, Port of Stockton, and Laguna Seca race courses. Trish OโShields and Sally Snoop contributed the articles and photos. Arnold and wife Trish joined the club in 1973, while Oran and wife Grace were the only 30-year PCA members in SVR as of April 1989.
The highlight of CRAB 18, April 21-23, chaired by Stan Breyfogle, was the cleaning, polishing, and waxing of John Cleverโs old-but-neverbefore-washed white 944 under the cover of darkness Friday night in the Red Lion parking lot while John was knocking-back crab cocktails in the welcome party. Jeff Lateer of Golden Gate Region led the mischievous bunch who did the deed to the carโs LEFT SIDE, ONLY. It was as if they had masked the car perfectly down the middle, front-to-rear. What contrast! Meanwhile. . .Tom and Tambra Kroetz won the Crabbiest car competition, and class winners in the Brian Perryโs nighttime funkhana were Ron and Sally Boeck, Bruce Westrup and Mike Willis, and Jim McDade and Kirk Bradford. J. Toney wrote the rally won overall by the team of Rik Larson and John Clever. George and Nona Morley won their class. On Sunday, the SVR autocross class winners were Tom Kroetz, Bruce Westrup, Dwight Mitchell, Pat Wilson, Marcella Mitchell, Sally Boeck, Chris Summerville, and Linda Mitchell. Art Seeger, Yosemite Region, won the Snidely Whiplash Bass Ackwards Award, deservedly so.
10 Years Ago (April 1999)
Twenty-six drivers checked-in for the April 3 SVR Autocross at Mather Field chaired by Glen Brooksby. A pre-race sprinkle gave way to mostly sunny but very windy conditions for the yearโs first SVR autocross, a very successful event made possible by SVRโs faithful workers Bill Winkler, Doug DeVetter, Tim Howard, Russ Hildebrand, John Kessler, Tim Fleming, Warren Walker, Kern Breaux, and Don Zinke. Mike and Sue Ambrozewicz were there to make sure everyone had a bratwurst lunch. Pat Costin (Sierra Nevada Region), Glen Brooksby, Tim Fleming, Bill Winkler, and Bill Thorp had the five best times of the day. Tania Bentler, Toni Smith, and Eugenie Thomas had the three best ladies lap-times. Mark Judish earned the top rookie time in Mike Ambrozewiczโs trick 914. Allen and Dolores Weddle had their annual Champagne Brunch Tour on April 11, and this time it went to Robbers Roost, built of granite and glass on the side of a hill in Foresthill at the 3200-foot level. It sounded so irresistible that 59 members signed up for the tour - and they werenโt disappointed. A scrumptious buffet with fresh fruit, croissants, omelets, blintzes and crepes, bacon and sausage, a carving station with roast beef and ham, eggs Benedict, potatoes, salads, and pasta, along with free-flowing champagne served in our spacious private room helped to top off a beautiful drive and day. Sally Boeck gave out door prizes including dinner for two at the Robbers Roost won by Kent Brandon and Cindy McKenzie. Wyn and Linda Robertson and Marv and Marie Smith shared stories about other long-time SVR members. Greg Peart had trouble getting around with a cast on his leg, but Cyndee provided plenty of help.

Hands-On Tech Session Blow Off the Dust and Take Out the Moth Balls by Jim McMahen
The weather is getting better and the days are getting longer so it is time to dust off the Porsche and start driving it. Before you take your dream car out for the first time why not clean and wax it so it will look like a new car. One good preparation will last for the season. If I have you interested then join us on Sunday, April 26th at Bob Jacobsonโs home for a gathering of enthusiasts who love their cars. We will have a โHands-onโ tech session addressing the proper cleaning, claying,polishing, sealing, waxing, and tire dressing for your Porsche. Under the supervision of David Yamada, noted automobile detailer, all participants will perform one or more of these tasks on selected cars. Please be prepared for a day of learning and working, with the session expected to last six hours. All products will be supplied and you may purchase additional ones. Your friends are also invited; they donโt have to a Porsche, just a love for their automobile. Come early and enjoy a nice continental breakfast and a cup of coffee, or orange juice. The Third Annual BS Wine Tour May 16, 2009
From Starbuckโs on Reed Avenue in West Sacramento (Across I-80 from IKEA) Meet at 8:00 A.M. and depart at 8:30 A.M. Bring a picnic lunch and a full tank of gas. This yearโs tour takes us to the Sonoma Valley via Pope Valley and our first stop at Pope Valley Winery. We have discovered some fantastic Porsche roads for your driving enjoyment, including the infamous Ink Grade. The lunch stop will be at the beautiful Chateau St. Jean Winery, where we will enjoy a formal tasting followed by a picnic in their lovely redwood grove. The winery requires wine consumed on the premises be Chateau St. Jean only. The next adventure will be a visit to Jack London State Par.k where we can wander through the beautiful grounds. Jack London State Historic Park is a memorial to writer and adventurer Jack London, who made his home at the site from 1905 until his death in 1916. The park was once part of the famous writerโs Beauty Ranch. The park contains the cottage residence where he wrote books, including Call of the Wild, White Fang and The Sea Wolf, and oversaw various agricultural enterprises. After Londonโs death, his wife, Charmian, continued to live in the cottage until her death in 1955. It was her wish that the ranch be preserved in memory of Jack London and his work. There is a museum and hiking trails, so wear comfortable shoes. You will pay an entry fee of $6.00 per car based on the oldest occupant at the gate ($5.00 for persons 62 and over) that is not included in the official tour cost. We will visit another winery and then continue on to an optional early dinner at Villa Romano. If you attended last yearโs tour, you will remember dining at this cozy restaurant in Napa, where we were provided a private room, separate checks and hearty Italian cuisine. The price for the tour is $11.00 per person for the first 25 people who sign up. After that, the price is $21.00 per person. So come on and open up your pocket books and spend those big tax returns at the Goodie Store! This is the time to get that NEAT STUFF to be โcoolโ in warmer weather. The resolution in the printed version is exponentially better than the web version (PDF). This is because in order to keep the PDF file size to a minimum the quality of all of the text, graphics and photos are greatly reduced. Even as small as I can make the file it is still a 3-meg file which may take some folks too long to download. Almost too many events to pick which to attend this and coming months! Updating Your Record & the Hidden Peril. The Porsche Club of America (PCA) and the Sacramento Valley Region data bases are not electronically connected. Instead, changes you make to your PCA record are sent to me each month for updating our SVR data base---with one perilous omission. PCA does not notify us of affiliate changes. I became aware of this quirk upon noticing a former spouseโs, rather than the current spouseโs, name in a memberโs record. The safest route is to update your PCA record and also email your changes to me.
