New members don’t be shy. If you haven’t put an event together and don’t know how or where to start don’t let that stop you. Give me or Rik a call and we will pair you up with one of our season members as your co-chair. I also have instruction on how to put on a Tour and Dinner Meeting for your viewing. We also have a list of many tours and dinner places we can give you. It is easy and fun to do. Be ready for something new to do this year. Tambra set up a silent auction with numerous things for our charity benefactor Folsom Zoo and raised $273.50. Special thanks go to Beth Jacobson for making a Porsche Crest purse for the event. That was won by Judy Hanna with a bid of $85.00. Many of you also gave donations for the event and a special thanks to you for making our game night fun and exciting. Our Potluck and Game night was loads of fun with a great turnout. We played Mexican Train and had a few tables playing different card games. We had a variety of delicious hot dishes and salad served. Prizes were given out to Greg & Cyndee Peart for the most elegant place setting, Linda and Jim McMahen for the silliest and Tom and Tambra Kroetz for best theme place setting.

Drifting Back – February 2010 by Larry Wilson
30 Years Ago (February 1980)
Nona Morley and C.C. Craig won “Best Dressed in Western Duds” during the February 7 dinner meeting at Pinnacle Peak. Jack and June Samples won honorable mention. Clint deWitt had his tie cut off, right beneath his nose (no big loss -- it was a crummy-looking thing). Those attending witnessed the local premier of the cinema classic, “Cone Heads at the Races,” courtesy of Dwight and Linda Mitchell. Six cars of SVR members journeyed on February 10 to the Vacaville-Fairfield area to join Redwood Region members in a rally by Emmett Wilder. About 30 rally-cars ran the event. We had our big guns, all locked and loaded for this one (Jim and Denise Boswell, Harvey Cain and Connie Farlinger, Rik and Lettie Larson, George and Nona Morley, and Richard Wetzel). It was a disaster -- too many questionable traps, the last of which collected the SVR folks at an on-ramp to I-80 with the next instruction reading, “R at Stop.” On a freeway? Little did anyone think that instruction referred to a “Stop Ahead” sign on a parallel frontage road visible from the freeway. Everyone regained some sense of humor at the finish at Fairfield Landing.

Karen Mangin and Sally Boeck and Harvey and Connie Cain were the only two SVR rally teams brave enough to enter the February 18 Zone 7 rally chaired by John Clever. It was the second event in the 1990 Zone 7 Series, and Sally and Karen finished 2nd. With a large margin, Harvey and Connie were first!

White Elephants at Chuck’s Grill in Folsom on February 5 were promised by Tambra Kroetz and she did not disappoint the SRO crowd (that’s show-biz talk meaning a good turnout) which included neighbors and in-laws and maybe lucky street bystanders. Annual Event Planning Meeting by Rik Larson, Vice President
We have more than 30 people signed up for our annual event planning meeting on Thursday, February 4th. All of the signups are from long-time members..............where are the new members? We have monthly dinners planned thru June already (including one that is in the backyard of the Cannon’s where you can park your Porsche in their backyard.......no kidding). A couple of more chairs for the remaining dinners and we will be good. And still looking for someone to chair the Christmas Party. The calendar planning is for all of this year and the first third of next year. So if you have a neat location that would be appropriate for early 2011, we are receptive.
Suggestions for tours that keep popping up include: Strawberry Lodge, Bodega Bay, Dunsmuir, Monterey, Yosemite, Death Valley, Gold Country, San Simeon, Wine Country, Lake Tahoe, Virginia City. And maybe even some tours might originate right after our monthly first Saturday breakfast. Our Competition Director, Frederick Rauch, can definitely use help with the AX situation (headed up by Bob Peake). Various Driver’s Education events have already been scheduled for the year. SVR will present a concours out at Niello Porsche on June 27th that will be part of the 2010 Zone 7 Concours series. If you are not able to attend the meeting on February 4th but still are interested in chairing or can assist on an event, contact either the Social or Competition Director. Remember: $5 per person for pizza and soda on February 4th.
The New Member Group (Dan Rowland, Lee Deter, and Doug Klein) have already scheduled several events beginning in March for JUST new members. Check out the event information on page 16. I have been contacted by several folks regarding the scheduling of tours and rallies. Many are looking to work around various other events (both regional and Zone 7).

Tech Article: Do I fill with nitrogen or air in my tires? by Jim Kinnicutt, SVR Technical Chair
Hello to all. Last month we talked about the age of our tires and now I would like to take a look at tire pressure and maintaining it. There has been some discussion lately on the use of nitrogen instead of the standard compressed air in our tires. The argument is that nitrogen:• Maintains pressure longer as the molecules are larger and do not permeate the rubber in the tires. • Maintains pressure more consistently because there is less moisture in the environment to cause expansion with heat. • Less moisture also protects against corrosion of inner wheel components. Let’s look at the make-up of the compressed air environment. It consists of: • Approximately 78% nitrogen • 21% oxygen • 1% miscellaneous ‘other’ gases • Up to as much as 5% water vapor (water vapor is not part of the gaseous mixture but displaces some of the total volume in the inflation environment) So filling your tires with nitrogen mainly does two things: it eliminates moisture, and it replaces skinny oxygen molecules with fat nitrogen molecules, reducing the rate at which compressed gas diffuses through porous tire walls. I recently had an experience with one of my ‘other’ cars. I needed a simple tire repair and had it done at a local shop. Shortly afterward, my tire inflation warning light came on. I checked pressures on all 4 tires to find the repaired tire was 10lbs. HIGHER than the others. I readjusted the pressure and drove on just to have it come back on the day after. This time that tire was lower so I added air to make it even again. This happened a third time. My solution was to let out ALL the air I could safely let out, without damaging the sidewalls, from ALL 4 tires. I refilled all four tires from my compressor at home, thus filling all four tires with the same atmospheric content ratios. Now they vary with temperature, but they do it at the same rate. This proved to me the effect of the moisture content on varying pressures at varying temperatures. For me, the question is, does this cause enough of an issue to warrant the extra cost of nitrogen on a street driven car, even if taken to the track occasionally? This becomes a personal judgment call. I have had good results for years using compressed air and monitoring it often. Now, however, I add the procedure of occasionally completely replacing the air in all four tires to keep the internal environments somewhat equal. For a track car, however, you may want to consider the benefits of nitrogen. Happy cruizin’ and keep those questions coming! Jim Kinnicutt jkinnicu@yahoo.com

SVR’s Christmas Party at Niello Porsche by Kim Nelson, SVR Member
With 170 SVR members and Porsches all over the place, what could make for a better Christmas Party! The evening started with our Social Hour in Niello’s showroom with wonderful orderves being served and red bows adorning some brand new Porsches. This was an excellent time to catch up with some of your SVR friends whom you hadn’t seen in some time. Our buffet dinner started at 7:00 pm and we all moved to the Service area to sit down and enjoy the evening. Dinner was wonderful and with the lights dimmed and beautiful table decorations provided by Darlene Byerley, the room was just perfect for our evening. This year’s program featured Pete Stout, Editor of Excellence Magazine, as our guest Speaker and what a surprise he had in store for us. The day before, Pete had taken delivery of the 2011 Boxster Spyder that had been on display at the Los Angeles Autoshow. Only 13 of these cars are currently in existence. Despite the bad weather, Pete and his wife, Rebecca, drove the new Porsche from Marin County to Niello where we had it displayed for everyone to see. Pete provided us with an entertaining and informative discussion about the new Boxster Spyder and ended his talk with questions from our club members.

Parties like this don’t happen in a vacuum and there were many people working behind the scenes to make it happen. I would like to thank Dennis and Judy Stettner for co-chairing the event with Rachel and myself. Tom Sission did a fantastic job of getting everyone registered and making sure the monies were accounted for. The table decorations were over the top this year – thank you Darlene and Cindy and Kent Brandon did a beautiful job of getting our club members checked in at the party. None of this would have been possible this year if it were not for the Niello family who let us use their wonderful facility. In particular, Rick Corbet-Gonzales, General Manager, Don Koepke, Parts Manager and Jim Webber, Service Manager all worked hard behind the scenes to make sure we had a wonderful evening.

He wanted the board to approve $125 for some trailer cabinet mounting brackets, which it was. Our membership is down 3.5% from January 2009. Doug reviewed the printed Drifter and the costs associated with mailing it. Doug also passed out the 2010 board member’s name badges. Social Director: Helen Ashukian Helen gave a preview of the April dinner meeting at Fat’s in Folsom. There will be a wine tasting given by Boeger Winery prior to the meal. The board approved the event.

Pacific Grove Tour 2010 - March 5th, 6th and 7th The Pacific Grove Tour is back. We will be leaving Sacramento on the morning of Friday, March 5, 2010. Valentine’s Day or Saint Valentine’s Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14 by many people throughout the world. In the English-speaking countries, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine cards, presenting flowers, gifts, offering confectionery or shopping the SVR Goodie Store. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of “valentines”. Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-produced of greeting cards. The sending of Valentines was a fashion in nineteenth-century Great Britain, and, in 1847, Esther Howland developed a successful business in her Worcester, Massachusetts home with hand-made Valentine cards based on British models. The popularity of Valentine cards in 19th century America, where many Valentine cards are now general greeting cards rather than declarations of love, was a harbinger of the future commercialization of holidays in the United States.
February SVR Board Meeting Minutes continued...
Webmaster: John Murphy There was a second email about the January Drifter availability this month. The second was to a new server that may be more attractive to some members. It will be added to all future Drifter availability emails. The website was hit most heavily in December on the 9th, when the Drifter was uploaded, and the 24th, when people may have been last minute Christmas shopping! Vice President: Rik Larson Rik updated the calendar. Past President: Mike Willis NTR President: Cookie Anderson Cookie referred to a letter from a member whose mother was recently murdered and the killer has not been identified. Frederick, who received the same letter, made a motion for the board to donate $500 toward the reward for the arrest and conviction of the killer. A discussion ensued and it was brought to the board’s attention that because of our tax-exempt status that a donation like this may be illegal and after further research was confirmed. Thunderhill Raceway Observer Track Day: Yes, mere mortals can drive on the same tracks as the pros. At Thunderhill we will sit in on a driver’s meeting, take a walking tour of the track, learn fundamental track driving techniques, chat with drivers in the pits, ride the track with an instructor and possibly drive a lap or two. Great fun! Lee. April 23, Friday. Sierra Driving Tour & Finnon Reservoir Picnic: Enjoy fine Porsche roads and breath-taking views in the sierras. Wind along rock creek road, stopping occasionally to admire wild flowers hanging from canyon walls and the raging spring flow in south fork of the American river. Yuba-Donner Scenic Byway Tour: Climbing the twisting, deep gorge of the Yuba river through Downieville and Sierra city, is a Porsche pilot’s delight and one of the most beautiful routes in California. The historic Kentucky mine provides a shady and interesting lunch spot, with an optional stamp mill and gold mine tour. After pausing for a photo op of the magnificent 8,600 foot sierra buttes, we’ll head for Truckee (libations), then, home. Doug. May 30, Sunday. April 23. Thunderhill raceway observer track day. Lee deter. Thunderhill raceway is seven miles west of willows in the rolling foothills of the sierra cascades (check this). We’ll begin the day with an easy drive north on interstate 80 to willows, home of thunderhill raceway. Give your porsche a treat, and take it where it’s happiest. Your porsche is at home on a racetrack. Thought only the pro’s could drive professional tracks and mere mortals couldn’t? Think again! This is about the most fun you can have with your porsche. * track headquarters and meet the folks that run the event * learn the routine of a typical track day * learn basic driving techniques * sit in on a “download session,” a 15 minute meeting of drivers meeting * see basic driving techniques in action during a walk of the track’s perimeter * ride around thunderhill racetrack * lunch under covered patio * amble abound the track and chat with drivers. Meet at 7:30 i-80 and truxel in the ___ shopping center. Depart at 8:00. Mentors: Event organizers will serve as mentors for new members who are interested in leading events. An email notice will be sent to new members requesting they contact the tour leader if they are interested in co-leading the event. The new member will be actively involved in all phases of planning, leading and post-tour follow-up.
