Senate approves new panel Madison Miranda Online Editor

Five members were approved to the Academic Senate’s Ad Hoc Evaluation Committee of the President after an extensive debate about its validity and practicality at its Nov. 18 meeting.

The new members are Loknath Persaud, Michelle Ireland-Galman, Philip Ricards, Charlene Potter, and Charlotte Williams.

According to senator Loknath Persaud, the two things the committee would be addressing are whether the faculty has the power to evaluate the administration, and if so, what model would be used for the evaluation.

“We want to encourage all kinds of faculty to join the committee,” said Persaud.

Some of the senators ex-

pressed concerns with the committee.

“I’m very nervous about the foundation of this committee, to the point of almost being opposed [to it],” said senator Dan Gallup.

Gallup questioned the legal standing of such a committee.

“I’m just wondering if this is the best solution,” he said. “I doubt that it is.”

Senator Stephanie Fleming worried about the message this might send in regards to Super-Intendant/President Mark Rocha.

“It feels very reactive to this particular president at this particular time,” said Fleming.

Others felt an evaluation of the president would be a useful tool for bettering the campus.

“The evaluation process is not only for information, but also a vehicle to improve,” said senator Gloria Horton. “It will give the

president the opportunity to recognize his strengths and shore up his weaknesses.”

Senate president Eduardo Cairo said that the administration shouldn’t be opposed to a faculty evaluation.

“Why can they not assume that the faculty will find something good?” asked Cairo. “It will shed light on areas to be fixed.”

The event was a partnership with the city of Pasadena, Filipino American Television (FILAMTV), The Pasadena Seventh Day Adventist Pathways Club and the American Red Cross among others.

“It’s so heartwarming to see the response from the community to meet the needs of the victims as they try to rebuild their lives,” said Resa Recalde of the Pasadena Seventh Day Adventist Pathways Club.

The American Red Cross was on hand collecting monetary donations for the victims.

“We are here collecting any cash or credit card donations to be sent along with it,” said Rachelle Gayl, Director of Development for the Red Cross in San Gabriel and Pomona Valley.

Jamielee Paca, a producer and host at FILAMTV, helped coordinate the event.

“It’s not just individuals, but corporations, organizations and establishments that have gathered their groups together to donate not just small things, but truck fulls of items that the victims can use,” said Paca.

“To see not only Filipinos but also those that are not Filipinos supporting the Philippines is such a humbling experience,” she said.

Those who still want to donate are encouraged to contact their local chapter of the American Red Cross for monetary donations. FILAMTV will also be collecting item donations for months to come at their studio located in Pasadena.

Community aids typhoon disaster victims Justin Clay Staff Writer

PCC took part in the Philippine Typhoon Disaster Relief Donation Drive on Thursday at the Rose Bowl, an event designed to collect donations for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan, that struck the Philippines and killed thousands earlier this month.

Members of the community were encouraged to donate canned goods, clothing, toys, toiletries and any items that might benefit disaster victims.

“We’ve been unpacking bags, sorting clothes constantly. It’s been a huge turnout the community has been very generous,” said Michael Ihrig of the PCC Public Relations Web Office.

Forum recommends transparent structure

Presenters Stephanie Fleming and Crystal Kollross, members of the IEC, stood next to Jordan to explain the research and data they gathered while visiting other campuses and looking at their shared governance models.

“We’re just visiting other colleges and part of that process is asking what their programming model looks like,” Fleming said.

“We couldn’t draw our integrated planning model [like other colleges could].”

The colleges Kollross visited had transparent structures that were easily understood, she said.

“We asked to every single person the same questions, they all explained it the exact same way,” she said.

Matt Jordan, interim associate dean of general education, led the group presentation regarding program review and the lack of transparency between recommendations and the decision making process.

Jordan suggested that fixing these issues would not only keep the college’s accreditation intact, but would lead to a better, more open campus climate.

“It contributes to transparency a general feeling of fairness in decision-making. Those are the main reasons why we want to do it,” he said.

Members of the Budget Resource and Allocation Committee (BRAC) and the Institutional Effectiveness Committee (IEC) met on Friday in the hopes of formulating ideas for a more transparent and understandable administrative structure.

Many members of the IEC and BRAC were concerned that they did not even understand the current structure of administrative decision-making.

IEC member and instructor John Wood was confused how the IEC was involved in making recommendations which went to BRAC, a major decision-making body regarding the allocation and resourcing of college funds. “[If the] IEC is the only group reading program reviews … I don’t understand how that gets to BRAC,” he said.

A main concern was how a program review’s importance played into the allocation of funding.

Joseph Futtner, dean of visual arts and media studies, said he constantly hears miscommunication and confusion around program review and how different programs are qualified for funding.

“I see less communication and I appeal to the god of the nimble [to fix it],” Futtner said. “I wish we had more of an ability to work on this stuff and rather than just always waiting and

Barbone is currently the President of the South Coast Conference (SCC), the conference in which all Lancers’ sports participate, with the exception of football. He is also President of the Central Conference of the Southern California Football Association (SCFA) and serves on the Executive Board as the SCC representative to the CCC Athletic Directors Association.

“Barbone will bring a lot of positive change and order to our department,” women’s assistant basketball coach La’Nette Dillard said. “He has strong leadership skills and we’re really excited to have him here.”

“I’ve become very familiar with PCC since working at El Camino and I feel there are great possibilities in growth for the intercollegiate athletics program,” Barbone said.

“I know my role is lending support and leadership to our coaches, staff, and more importantly our student-athletes. Being a part of future greatness here is something I look forward to in 2014 and beyond.”

Originally from Covina, Barbone earned an associate of arts degree at Mt. San Antonio College, then bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Azusa Pacific University.

Third party desperately needed

If anyone has been on this campus long enough, then you understand the hostile climate has rendered it dysfunctional.

From seemingly endless brawls (both verbal and physical) over a calendar change which eliminated a winter intersession, a reorganization (or is it realignment?) of the academic divisions, and lawsuits galore over alleged working conditions violations, bribery, and other tawdry issues have come up in just the last two years alone. What seems to be the root of this issue?

In a world where people so freely share what they had for lunch on Tuesday, what they wore on Friday, and where they are now, why does it come as a surprise that someone is looking at this information?

According to the annual survey conducted by Kaplan Test Prep Survey, 29 percent of college admissions officers say they have Googled applicants while 31 percent say they’ve visited an applicant’s Facebook or other social networking page.

While this “surprising” information had some people crying out “Big Brother,” what is more shocking is that in an age where we’re all worried that the NSA is spying on us we forget how easy it is to “spy” on someone else.

meaningless in the final decisions made by the Board of Trustees on major issues. Both groups passed votes of no confidence in the administration regarding this.

Something obviously needs to be done to fix this catastrophe, and not just to keep everyone happy and peachy keen.

The last three visits by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) left the college with repeated recommendations to fix communication gaps and a broken shared governance process. Another visit is planned for Spring 2015 and the college has yet to completely fix these issues.

According to the New York Times, colleges don’t check applicants’ personal social media networking pages as a routine practice. If they do it is because they have been alerted to do so because of extreme hate speech.

The main thing people forget is that the Internet is a tool and, in the case of college admission officers, it is a tool they use to help weed out certain applicants.

However, this can also be used to the advantage of students.

By simply “liking” the school on Facebook or following them on Twitter, students not only show they are interested but are also able to display their positive behavior or talents.

While some people may not agree with what some college admissions officers are doing, they are not to blame. They do not create the content—that is the students’ doing.

How ironic and telling that campus constituents have gotten to the point of arguing over bringing in someone to stop the arguing.

Shared governance groups such as the College Council, headed by president Mark Rocha (who strongly supports bringing in a consultant to fix the campus climate), and the Academic Senate, headed by Eduardo Cairo (a member of the FA, which is in the middle of a working conditions lawsuit with the District), have argued on opposite sides of this issue and are still arguing over it.

It seems obvious then, that it is absolutely imperative to bring in a third party consultant to keep the fighting children

City College of San Francisco is just a few short months away from closing its doors due to scarily similar shared governance issues on its campus, ultimately because the ACCJC took away its accreditation.

If we don’t fix this problem and bring in someone who isn’t involved in the fights to do it, we will ultimately be at risk of losing our accreditation too and failing to meet the needs of students and their success.

Colleges and universities themselves are becoming less personal with their students due to technology and social media, and now they are using social media against us students. It’s kind of funny because once again “Big Brother” is always watering something down.

Bad language does not make a bad student. I won’t lie and say that I blame these colleges or universities for using the resources that are easily at their fingertips, but how can they judge students based on social media?

If you are transferring, it’s best to go through your social media sites now and “clean them up”.

Is it fair? Not at all, but it’s your future you have to think about.

Don’t let social media hold you back.

Students beware: check your hash-tags and keep the negative and expressive tweets to a minimum if you are planning on transferring to a four-year college or university.

Be careful what you post because “Big Brother” may be watching you.

According to the Washington Post, 31 percent of national colleges and universities are reviewing social media sites to “weed out” applicants who post bad behavior, bad language and show bad judgment.

It should come to no surprise that some colleges are now using social media as another way to discriminate against students.

Don’t stress, the Be ‘Awaken’-ed by the college application songs of the gospel choir season is almost over Tiffany Roesler Staff Writer

While the hair pulling, swearing at the computer screen and stress related Twitter rants have been well under way this month as students prepare for the university application process, Pasadena City College’s own transfer center offers students assistance with issues regarding college applications and steps to transferring.

At the end of the month, all UC and CSU applications are due for students applying for the 2014-2015 school year.

November 30 is the deadline for CSU and UC applications, while private universities have deadlines further down the road.

However, Dina Chase strongly advises students to get a jumpstart on applications.

“Starting in November we said it’s now time to apply to CSU and UC, that’s what our banners across campus [have] said,” Director of Outreach Degree and Transfer Services Dina Chase. “[Fliers] that were published gave the students an opportunity at a month in a glance. We published these things that give students a heads up on what they had to do about the applications, certain deadlines, and what the dos and don’ts are about the CSUs and UCs.” The Transfer Center has been informing students about applying and transferring since August.

There have been workshops, and all the information is available online or at the Transfer Center.

Amber Lopez, a first time student in the transfer center who doesn’t plan on transferring until 2015, found it important to make sure she’s taking the right steps to transfer out in two years.

“This is my first time in here.

It’s really helpful, the process and helping you get your applications done,” Lopez said. “I feel confident that I’ll transfer on time.”

For the procrastinators, it’s a little too late for an early start for Fall 2014 applications, but there is still time to seek help from the Transfer Center to get the process going and completed. Advisers are available to help students along with constant visits from university representatives who are available to work with students one-on-one.

“We got additional support here in the office to help students with questions, how to apply.

If they have problems with the submittal of the application we can put them in contact with the universities directly to answer any questions they might have,” Chase said.

If all else fails this high-stress month, there’s always the pub down the street.

“The bar works both ways. If you fail, you go to the bar. If you pass a test you still go to the bar,” first year student Johnny Vilay said.

Juried student art is a feast for the eyes Luis Rodriguez Staff Wrter

Student art never looked so good.

Doug Harvey, renowned Los Angeles based artist and curator, was chosen as an impartial judge to select work to be displayed at the newly named Gallery on the Quad on Nov. 14.

Five lucky artists received cash prizes totaling $1,200 for their submissions.

Brian Tucker, art gallery director, said that getting Harvey as a juror was a delight.

“We get someone to come in with a fresh set of eyes not contaminated by a relationship with the artist,” Tucker said.

Harvey’s expertise resulted in a well-balanced exhibit with an eclectic array of mediums and composition.

“I have this unusual dual consciousness about art,” Harvey said. “I think fairly uniquely among critics. I can put myself in the artist’s place.”

Many of the artists selected by Harvey

were humble about their achievement.

Among them was Sebastian Genato, art, who took winning an award as an affirmation that he is pursuing the right career.

“It feels great,” Genato said. “Just like last year I didn’t know what I was doing.

I was undecided about my major and I guess winning an award just kind of confirms it, that I’m choosing the right path.”

The inspiration for one piece, “Way Cheaper,” came from a student who removed tattoos from his hand with sandpaper.

The artist, Nathan Minier, depicts a hand with the fingers cut off. Each one has a letter on it to spell “GUNZ.” “I had to remove it. But laser removal was taking to long so I sanded it off with sandpaper and so I drew this when I didn’t have a lot of skin on my hand,” Genato said.

Inspiration for other artists came from less cathartic places such as Tsvetelina Valkov’s “Broken Silence.”

“I was driving through the desert and was so amazed by the horizon, the clouds and the view,” said Valkov. “I took a picture of it and thought about what I should do with it.”

It’s November, and that means that the next generation of video game consoles is finally here.

The PlayStation 4 was released Thursday at midnight and gamers all over the world were ready to get there hands on the new technology. People waited as long as 24 hours in line to be one of the firsts to take the major step forward.

Nick Nguyen was one of many in line at the GameStop location on Lake to get his hands on the new system.

“I’m not first but I’ve been here for about 12 hours waiting

for my PS4,” Nguyen said. “I just can’t wait to get home and play it.”

The PS4 is just about half the width of the original PS3 and also considerably lighter while being much more powerful.

According to theverge.com, the PS4 has a custom processor with 8 AMD Jaguar CPU cores, a next generation Radeon GPU, 8 gigs of RAM, a 500 GB hard drive and a 6-speed Blu-ray drive.

Vocal Jazz Ensemble delivers a feel-good performance Samantha Molina Asst. A&E Editor

Although the crowd was small, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble delivered a smooth and relaxing evening performance on Nov. 17.

The singers performed the songs of George Shearing, Thelonius Monk and Antonio Carlos Jobim as well as jazz renditions of “The Fool on the Hill” by the Beatles and “Being Green” made famous by Kermit the Frog.

Students Marc Copage, Denney Premkumar, Alexis Soto Jr. and Saundra Ramirez also performed four solos.

Accompanying the singers was a backing band with Akane Tada on piano, Jordan Richards on bass and Ralph Penland on the drums.

Prior to Sunday’s performance, the singers had ten rehearsals without the backing band.

“The setting alone boosted the performance so much,” director Andreas Preponis said. “Everybody was confident, they looked like they were having fun. I am really pleased with the outcome.”

“It was my first concert singing and I wasn’t nervous at all,” singer Ricardo Lomeli said. “It was very energetic despite the attendance.”

The Lancers’ volleyball team remained tied for first place in the South Coast Conference Friday after a come-frombehind four-set victory over Cerritos College.

After dropping the first set, the Lancers went on to defeat a feisty Falcons team 20-25, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-22.

“Maybe it’s for the best Cerritos gave us fits,” Lancers’ interim head coach Bill Sanchez said. “It’s another reminder that you have to take every opponent as if they can knock you off. We’re thinking about El Camino and Cerritos took the first set and put us in a hole. Well we came back and now we have to come up with our best effort to win conference.

You can bet ECC is gunning for us.”

The four-set victory extended the Lancers current season-high win streak to nine games, and improved their conference record to 12-1. The ninth straight win gives the Lancers control of the conference championship as they remain tied for first place with bitter rivals El Camino College.

The Lancers will host the Warriors on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium in the regular season finale. The winner will be crowned 2013 conference champions.

Last season the two teams shared the conference title.

Although the Lancers have already defeated ECC on the road, both teams share 12-1 conference records and it all comes down to Wednesday night’s game.

“Losing the first set against Cerritos was a positive for us,” sophomore Thula Parks said. “It made us play our A game and now we’re all so excited to win Wednesday.”

Men’s soccer bound for playoffs Benjamin Simpson Staff Writer

On Friday the men’s soccer team dominated El Camino College Compton Center with a final score of 5-2 at home in Robinson Stadium. But more importantly, they are headed to the playoffs after finishing 7th in Southern California.

The Lancers will play Oxnard College (No. 10 in Southern California with a record of 15-5-1) in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Azusa Pacific University at 2 p.m.

Pasadena gained home field advantage, but the soccer field at Robinson Stadium field is not wide enough to host an official game, so the Lancers play their ‘home’ game at an available nearby field. This time the home site is at Azusa.

The Lancers finished their conference season with a 7-4-3 record and 8-6-7 record overall. Pasadena’s goalkeeper Gaetano Perez finished fourth in state with 110 saves.

“I think we are good for playoffs, we are set, a good team,” Sergio Benitez said.

The opening goal of the Friday game came after just four minutes. Benitez fought for the ball and then sped down the right line, crossing it towards goal.

“Sergio took it down the line, he crossed it and I saw the opportunity to take a dive on it. I dove, made contact and it went in,” Flores said.

Benitez scored the second Lancer goal in his signature style. Breaking free, Benitez chipped the ball over the keeper, softly bouncing it into the goal.

Zach Larson scored the third and

fourth goals. On the first, using his speed and dribbling skills, Larson beat a couple players to launch the ball into the corner from 20 yards out.

The Lancer men’s basketball team (4-2) showed they can play through adversity this past weekend in the “Alvin Hunter Classic” held Nov. 15-17.

Playing without sophomore forward Bryce Clifton due to injury, the Lancers were down to only four bench players in their opening match against tournament hosts San Bernardino Valley College, losing 67-58.

“The team played great in the absence of Clifton,” head coach Michael Swanegan said. “You never want to lose a player to injury, but the team stepped up in his absence and did a fantastic job.”

Against SBVC, the Lancers shot a disappointing 31 percent from the field (21 of 66) and only connected on three of the team’s 22 3-point attempts, a 13 percent mark.

“San Bernardino is one of the top teams in the state,” point guard Jeffrey Dockett said. “We played well as a team, even though we didn’t shoot the ball too well.

We kept the game close and continued our pressure the entire game. We would’ve preferred the victory but we’re continuing to get better.”

Dockett recorded a team high 18 points, five steals and four assists and Courier Player of The Week Taj Spencer added 17 points and nine rebounds, but the two leaders combined to shoot just 12-of-33 from the field.

“We were right in the ball game until the end,” Swanegan added. “We just didn’t execute down the stretch like we should have and it cost us the game.”

In their second game of the tournament, the Lancers defeated College of the Desert 84-71 behind 20 points and 10 rebounds from Spencer. Spencer led the Lancers to victory, converting on 6-of-10 field goals and 8-of-9 free-throws.

“My teammates continued to get me the ball in scoring positions and we knew we could not lose two games in a row,” Spencer said.

Freshman guard Jonathan Henderson tallied 12 points and four rebounds, while freshman guard Brandon Joseph had his best output of the season with 15 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Dockett added 14 points for the Lancers on 3-of-6 from behind the arc.

“Our success depends on how big Taj plays,” Swanegan said.

“We’re going to get scoring out of other people but we need inside scoring, and that’s what Taj provides. He plays a big role and he’s doing a great job on the defensive end as well.”

In the Victor Valley win, the Lancers went down to the wire in overtime to hand the Rams their first loss of the season.

The Ramxes were no match for Spencer on his imposing night. Spencer carried the Lancers to victory by recording his third— and most dominating—double-double of the season with 43 points, 20 rebounds and five assists.

The 43 points by Spencer were the third highest point total in Lancer men’s basketball history. Spencer connected on 18-of-24 shots (75 percent) and established himself early on the block.

Dockett added 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Freshman Rashad Smith added 15 points off the bench.
