Dyskinesias may be witnessed in people with Parkinson's disease (PD) after years of treatment with levodopa.DBS involves planting an electrical stimulator into either the section of the Globus Pallidus (GPi) or subthalamic nucleus (STN) . These brain sites play a vital role in regulating movements. Thus, the use of 'neurostimulator' -- a battery-operated medical device which is in the size of a stopwatch is planted under the skin near the collarbone which connects to a wire going to the brain to supervise the brain portions that regulate the movement. There is a boon and a bane for every device. DBS too has certain Pros and Cons. Its Pros can be stated as an improvement of symptoms related to levodopa side effects, particularly with respect to dyskinesia, for the people who undergo the process. The patient himself can control the level of stimulation, following an adjustment based on subjective need. But the procedure will carry risk and some side effects.
