Intense Risk Type Catherine works in marketing in the technology industry. Her position has recently changed so that she also works as a consultant half the time. As a consultant she feels very much out of her comfort zone. Part of being a consultant is to sell one’s services or expertise and Catherine is so self-critical that she wonders who would want to buy her skills. She also worries a lot; she worries about how she might look or sound, she worries about her reputation when she attends a customer meeting, she thinks she is not very good at small talk with senior people so worries that she tends to be fairly direct, and she is the type of person who has recurring nightmares about being in an exam and not knowing anything. Catherine wears her heart on her sleeve and finds it hard not to show her emotions or moods. She knows she has a very expressive face and she struggles to hide it. She frowns so much that she has even considered botox around her eyebrow area. Catherine’s anxieties drive her to being competitive with herself. She will always try and push herself to overcome her anxieties and this is something that has improved with maturity and experience. In the earlier stages of her career there were situations that would worry her so much that she withdrew or cancelled meetings or presentations. Nowadays, Catherine plans all the steps she has to go through to deliver a successful presentation and makes sure that she is prepared. She drives herself through her anxieties by planning and preparing rigorously. Catherine describes herself as someone who may take a risk with a meeting or a presentation if she really knows her subject - when she is in her zone she feels very confident as she knows what needs to be done - but she would be very reluctant to take a risk if she had to talk about something she doesn’t know about or do something that was new or unfamiliar to her.
