Through exciting, experiential learning, our learners quickly develop the foundations of scientific inquiry, engineering design principles and spatial mathematical awareness while also exercising problem-solving, communication, reflection and collaboration skills. With content designed to integrate instructional goals into application-based ed-ventures, we’ve coupled handson objectives and cutting-edge curriculum with manipulatives from fischertechnik®, Mod Robotics, Thrust-UAV and more! From classrooms and afterschool programs to makerspaces, robotics clubs and everything in between, we’re here to provide your learners with the perfect STEM solution. OUR STORY:

It started with a dream. 30 years ago, teacher Patrick McShane noticed a disconnect in his classroom. His students were eager to learn, to engage with new technologies and innovations, to prepare for the future, but their time in the classroom was leaving them unfulfilled. So he decided to make a change. In 1988, from the garage of his rural Idaho home, he created Pat’s Computer School (PCS), a place where K-12 learners could engage hands-on with science, technology, engineering and math and fuel a lifelong love of learning. Since its humble beginnings, PCS Edventures has worked relentlessly to instill a passion for STEAM in students all over the globe. With content designed to integrate instructional goals into application-based systems, over the last few years, we’ve focused our efforts on developing the world’s leading educational drone learning solution. Starting with a simple idea and a name, RubiQ, we’ve poured countless hours into creating an open-source, multi-platform, hands-on modular UAV program aimed at preparing today’s students for the future of drones. Challenging learners to build, configure and learn to fly, all in a space centered around student, teacher and bystander safety, we have managed to create a drone program which, regardless of previous UAV comfort entering the program, seamlessly plugs into any environment.

We’ve put RubiQ through the ringer, first seeing what she could do in testing groups and smaller clubs, eventually moving onto full classrooms, all the while discovering everything we could about why students love learning with drones. With every tweak and turn, RubiQ and the Discover Drones package has come a long way, even giving birth to Ready, Set, Drone!, a STEM drone solution geared towards elementary learners, and we’re proud of the immense impact the program has had on students in over 200 different learning environments. From preparing learners for a drone-filled future to sparking STEM degree and career interest, at PCS Edventures, it’s our goal to make learning and investigation a fun, innovative and interactive experience for all ages — are you ready to start a STEMventure?

Our expertise is creating exciting, hands-on projects that teach Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) concepts. Whether you are looking to teach specific subjects, or not sure where to start with your program, PCS Edventures has a camp for every situation. PCS Edventuresâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Enrichment Camps are designed to be fun, stimulating, hands-on solutions. With a multitude of subjects to choose from, our camps are the perfect tools to create exciting and engaging activities for students in grades 1-8.

ENRICHMENT CAMPS

CAMP ORGANIZATION While each Enrichment Camp is unique to its learning objective, the programs all follow a similar structure to help ease the weight of implementation. Whether you’re a seasoned teacher or a summer camp counselor, these camps contain everything you need to get started right out of the box (and we really mean everything — pencils, scissors, and even color copies for up to 30 students) which means less time shopping for supplies and more time spent actively teaching. Every camp is composed of 12 lessons, each designed to last about one hour. Instructors can use one a day for twelve days or clump them together to use in longer blocks. Lessons can also be broken apart and worked in throughout the course of a school year. The beginning of each lesson includes a quick overview of the day: •

STEAM CONNECTIONS: The specific topics in the lesson connected to Science, Technology, Engineering or Math. Science and Engineering topics match the Disciplinary Core Ideas of the Next Generation Science Standards and Math topics are drawn from the domains of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.

DURATION: How long the lesson is designed to last. Each lesson is designed to last about 60 minutes and can be extended with the ideas at the end of each day.

•

MATERIALS: A list of supplies needed for the day.

•

SCHEDULE: A list of the day’s activities in order, including estimated times for each part.

•

OBJECTIVE: A brief performance goal for each lesson.

•

ALIGNED STANDARDS: Relevant Common Core Math and Language Arts, International Society for Technology and Engineering Standards and Next Generation Science Standards.

•

HABITS OF MIND: 16 “thinking habits” developed by Art Costa and Bena Kallick to empower students to succeed in a 21st-century learning environment. Two or three are listed and emphasized each day.

21ST CENTURY SKILLS: A set of widely-applicable abilities essential for success in the information age. Two or three are listed and emphasized each day.

•

KEY TERMS & BACKGROUND INFORMATION: This section consists of a brief list of vocabulary terms students should be familiar with and detailed background information to allow instructors to answer any questions that might come up during a lesson.

OVERVIEW: A quick rundown of any preparation to take care of ahead of time.

After each overview is a list of step-by-step instructions for the day. This section is written to be accessible to a wide range of instructors, with directions to the instructors in black and example scripts to be read to students in blue. The color-coding is intended as a resource to give instructors a clear picture of how to make camp a fun, inquirydriven experience for their learners. The end of each lesson has a few additional resources: •

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING: Questions to check student understanding during and after each lesson. Use them in discussion or journaling for assessment or reflection.

EXTENSIONS: Extra ideas to extend concepts further or challenge students who finish early.

HOW TO USE YOUR LABCARDS Each LABCard includes two step-by-step projects, two challenges and one design project. Each project introduces new concepts and skills by guiding students through step-by-step activities. Two engaging challenges give students the opportunity to apply this knowledge before testing their understanding in a design project. Key terms are listed at the end of each card for reference. Along the bottom are three questions to check for understanding. Use them in discussion, written reflection or informal conversation to probe and deepen studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; understanding. At the end of every level, a final end design project challenges students to synthesize their learning with creativity and critical thinking.

WHY WE LOVE THEM The LABCard approach is intended to provide a tool that enables a more student-directed experience, while educators are empowered to provide more facilitation, coaching and mentoring as students work independently and in their own fashion. Almost all learning environments, including after-school programs, clubs and a wide variety of classroom models, can utilize LABCard curriculum. With the PCS LABCards, educators can take advantage of a differentiated instruction model where challenging concepts are broken down so students can quickly master skills and move forward. Each LABCard is assigned a point value for quick and easy assessment of progress through each level and to provide students with immediate recognition of their accomplishments. Students earn 5 points for each card they complete. Each level includes four, 5-point cards and culminates with a 5-point end design project, for a total of 25 points per level. By completing all four levels and all four optional End Design Projects, students can earn up to 100 points!
