Barboursville Knights take down Generals preps park for tournament By Zach Cumberland zach@theputnamstandard.com
By Amanda Smythers amanda@theputnamstandard.com The Village of Barboursville is gearing up for the U.S. Youth Soccer Region I Championships that will take the field June 25 – 30, in less than six months. The event, which was last held in Barboursville in 2010, brings youth soccer players from all around the east coast, including representatives from 13 states, said Barboursville Mayor Paul Turman. “Everybody knows that this is a big deal for the state,” Turman said during the Jan. 27 planning commission. “There will be people coming here from 13 states, from Maine all the way to Virginia.” To prepare for the tournament, the village’s public works department has been working on a series of upgrades to the park. This includes the creation of walking paths along the road as well as a built in sprinkler system for the fields. “We are planning to widen the road so we can have a bicycle trail and also a walking track from Martha Road all the way out to the lake, said Danny Porter, director of public works. “We’ve talked to the highway department about that and they’ve surveyed the road and the plans are being developed in Charleston.” Porter said the Division of Highways has promised the work will be completed by June 1. He said he will keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t interfere with the dates of the soccer tournament.
Cabell Midland Coach Matt Adkins said he didn’t expect to get such a scare when his team played Winfield (3-11). The close game will help the Lady Knights (7-6) hone in on some of the important aspects they need to improve upon after escaping with the 59-55 victory, however. “It’s always good to win,” Adkins said. “But I didn’t think our defensive effort was the best tonight. I thought we needed to take a little more pride and have a little bit more heart in playing and stop some of their baseline drives. “We did win and that’s a good thing, but sometimes a win like this, you can take more out of the things you need to work on. I’m not going to say they’re negative things.” Cabell Midland built an 11 point lead by the end of the first quarter on a 3-pointer by junior guard Haley Haggerty. Haggerty caught fire early and often from beyond the arc and led the Lady Knights with 23 points. “When I hit one shot it feels good,” Haggerty said. “And then that helps with the next one.” Haggerty hit five 3-pointers to help pace the Lady Knights. Winfield tried to switch from a 2-3 defense to a 3-2, but

Milton businesses expand, focus on health, wellness By Amanda Smythers amanda@theputnamstandard.com
Health and wellness are prospering in Milton as Snap Fitness and Serenity Day Spa have each expanded to new locations in Milton. Snap Fitness, locally owned by the Tarr family, opened its first location in Winfield. Four years later, Milton officially became their newest location. It opened in November. “I think, especially for fitness, this was a perfect location,” said
Crystal Criswell, marketing and wellness coordinator. “What we know is people are more likely to use a gym if it’s convenient and close to home. That’s another reason why we decided to open here. We knew Milton needed it.” Snap Fitness operates in conjunction with Generations Physical Therapy. It was already running when the company decided to add on the gym. Criswell said that, rather than just be a place to work out, the Tarr family envisioned a holistic
wellness facility. “We like to consider ourselves a wellness complex,” she said. “It’s not just a fitness center – we’re about complete and total wellness. We’re about people being really See Businesses, Page 5 Serenity Day Spa owner Kristy Ferguson cuts an honorary ribbon inside the spa’s new location in Perry Moore Square, Milton. The spa was open less than two years before its clientele expanded enough to warrant a larger location.
