Petronko serves country By Amanda Smythers The Cabell Standard While many people leave West Virginia to find a career, few leave to travel the world. The latter was the case with Petty Officer 3rd Class Jason Petronko, a graduate of Cabell Midland High School and native of Cabell County. Petronko is currently serving on the USS Vella Gulf, a Ticonderoga Class Cruiser. “We are currently participating in Joint Warrior 14-1, a semiannual, United Kingdom-led training exercise designed to provide NATO and allied forces a unique multi-warfare environment in which to prepare for global operations,” said Karina Voor, Public Affairs Officer. “The joint warrior exercise is intended to improve interoperability between allied navies in an operationally challenging environment.” This is only one stop for Petronko who has been able to travel the world as part of his career. “The Navy provides a great opportunity to visit many countries,” he said. “I have experienced various different cultures and seen places I would have never visited.” Petronko is an Operational Specialist which means he is responsible for tracking planes, missiles and ships while his ship is underway, something that happens frequently. “The ship is deployed for sevSee Petronko, Page 3

Bids come in over budget By Jim Ross For The Cabell Standard Bids to convert the former law library in the Cabell County Courthouse came in over budget, leaving county officials to decide if they go ahead with the project or revise it to bring down the cost. County commissioners opened bids on June 26. Six bids were received. * Capital Builders, Huntington, $1,093,000. * Dan Hill Construction Co., Gauley Bridge, $1,025,000. * Hager Construction Co., Huntington, $891,000.
* E P Leach & Son, Huntington, $912,434. * Neighborgall Construction Co., Huntington, $897,300. * Lombardi Development, Follansbee, $815,000. County Manager Chris Tatum said the commission had budgeted $750,000 for the project. “We’ll evaluate the bids and look at it pretty hard,” he said after the meeting. “If this is something that can be done, we’ll do it.” The state Supreme Court has told the county it needs to replace the small courtroom used by Circuit Judge Chris Chiles. It is
providing $150,000 to $200,000 to renovate the former law library into a suitable courtroom for Chiles, he said. In other business the commission approved a request from Sheriff T.W. McComas to hire Douglas West and Jerry Blake as part-time security officers. It also agreed to be the passthrough agent for a $2,000 grant to the Cabell County Public Library to seal and stripe parking lots and a $5,000 grant to the Madie Carroll House to rehabilitate the barn and Civil War soldiers’ quarters into the Rick Wiseman Civil War Museum.
Trio From Page 1 Roger A. Hesson Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Hesson was a long-time member of the Barboursville Lions Club and held many positions over the years including president. In 20032004 he was the District Governor for Lions District 29-O in West Virginia. Garcia plans to attend Marshall University this fall and major in mechanical engineering.
Anna Sheils, daughter of David and Julie Sheils, received the $1,000 John Fife Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is presented every year to a student who lives in the Barboursville zip code (25504). Fife was the principal of Barboursville High School for many years. Sheils plans to attend Marshall University in the nursing
program. The three recipients were chosen from a pool of 24 applicants who applied for these scholarships. The scholarship committee consisting of chair Lion Sherri Vance and Lions Julie Sheils and Lib Ciccolella are to be commended for their hard work and dedication in reviewing and choosing these three applicants.
serve to strengthen ties between allies and partners,” Voor said. “We participate in a broad range of missions from protecting freedom of the seas against anti-piracy, drug trafficking to working with other navies of the world and learning from each other while working together. “Through strengthened relationships we can expect increased peace and prosperity.” Petronko said he has met several shipmates from home and the surrounding area. He also credits Cabell Midland High School with some of his success. “Cabell Midland gave me many different skills which I still apply to my job,” he said. “The school offered many courses which provided me the skills to excel.” Voor said that anyone interested
in the Navy should definitely look into it. “It is a great time to join the world’s best Navy,” she said. “Our deployments entail hard work and the sacrifice of leaving our friends and family behind, but they also offer a one-of-a-kind experience to see the world. Our technology is ever-growing, and the real-world opportunities offered to a 17-yearold fresh out of high school or a 21-year-old fresh out of college or a 30-year-old looking for a job change cannot compare to the private sector.”
Submitted by Velma Kitchens What’s in a name? We spent a few days at Holly River State Park week-beforelast and the day we left we had breakfast at the lodge restaurant called Debs, which is next to the park office. The food was good and hot and just what we needed before heading home. The lady who waited on us was also the cook and she told me she had been employed there for eight years and the owner had been there for several years more than that. She was working on an orange meringue pie. I have never heard of an orange meringue pie, but she says it is a good pie and a secret recipe. I guess all the homemade recipes there are secret. I asked the lady her name and she said Silvie. Well, being the country girl I am, and having a great-grandmother named Silvie, I guessed that her name was really Sylvia. She said not really. I was wrong - sort of. She said her mother named her De Sylvia but dropped the De and then called her Silvie. She said the
De in her name was French. I don’t know much about names but I do like the name Sylvia. Blackberry cobbler was on the menu and we began talking about the cobbler. She said she tastes the berries before she starts in on a recipe. If the berries are very tart she adds more sugar, if the berries are really moist, she adds more flour. She seemed to know a lot about cooking and homemade recipes. Before I left I signed my name and she said in Hacker Valley (which is near the park), she knows three women named Velma. I have never known three Velma’s who lived in the same area. I told her my grandmother named me and my sister Retha, which is a different name also. The name Velma is a German name but is also English as a meaning. There are so many names in this world and all have a meaning. I am glad I met Silvie and learned a little bit of history at the same time. Everyone has a story, but sometimes the story has to be drawn out of them.

Weekly Devotional Submitted by Mary Jane “Freedom” Thought for the week: As free, and not using your liberty for a cloak of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. 1 Peter 2:16 As another July 4th approaches, we realize how swiftly time flies. I think we all should display our good old glory flag somewhere on our residence to show we are thankful more than ever for our freedom, not for the day, but every day. Our young men and women who have fought for this country didn’t just defend our country when they felt like it. They have given all. Sit and talk with a veteran who has served this country. Listen to what they went thru and you will walk away with a humble heart and gratitude of thankfulness for your freedom. There will always be war among countries and among individuals as well. Humans were created with their individual thoughts and wills. We do what we want. It is not always pleasing to God. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and
of love, and of a sound mind. Second Timothy 1:7 And the next verse of Second Timothy 1:8 means we as Christians need to stand up and fight for our rights. This country was founded on believing in God as our creator. To not be ashamed to stand for Him, in public with others, to say a prayer, to pledge to our flag, to acknowledge God with thankfulness in all we do. Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner; but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God. So many churches, so few people attending. What if it came to not attending church because it is not legal; all churches demolished and forbidden to gather and worship. Well, it is just that today in some countries. We are blessed by God to still have this freedom. Enjoy this Fourth of July, giving thanks for all you have. Prayer: Thank you God for the country I was born in, to worship freely with others. Amen.

Attorney General warns of credit, debit card scam Attorney General Patrick Morrisey is warning West Virginia consumers to be careful when receiving calls regarding their credit or debit cards being canceled or deactivated. The Attorney General’s Office is aware of a scam where callers target consumers with debit or credit cards and offer to fix “problems” with the card. The scammer’s phone number may not fully appear on a Caller ID, and the scammer may not state what bank or financial company he or she represents. However, the scammer will ask the consumer for his or her card account number and information in order to fix the alleged problem. “Our Office has received many calls about this scam already, and we want to ensure consumers know what steps to take to stay safe.
Many consumers use credit or debit cards as their main payment option when purchasing something, and to be told the card is deactivated can create a sense of fear or panic,” Attorney General Morrisey said. “If someone calls regarding your account, please immediately contact the financial institution that issued the card to verify whether there is an issue. Do not trust someone who calls out of the blue offering help to fix supposed problems.” The Attorney General’s Office reminded consumers that their guard should go up any time someone calls and tries to solicit personal and identifiable information. Consumers who encounter this kind of call should hang up right away and then independently verify the information they were
Milton author releases new book Milton author Casey L. Bond released “Pariah,” a new Christian fantasy romance novel. The story introduces readers to Solara, who longs for freedom. Having been raised under the Kingdom’s lock and key since the age of two, she wants to see the world. Upon turning 17 and receiving no mark from the Lord, she believes freedom is finally within her grasp. Unfortunately, she is wrong. The Kingdom has been fooled. She is marked by an angel of light, and one of the fallen dark ones. Solara is God’s chosen, and with her birth, the new covenant made with mankind is made manifest. Solara also longs for love, strong enough to last a lifetime, and beyond. Riven loves her, but is one of the fallen prophesied to
betray the chosen. Can she trust him? Love him? Prophecy states that she is the key. The fate of humanity rests with her decision, as she is the key to opening the doors of Heaven or the gates of Hell upon the Earth. But how can a normal girl, who has been raised with no knowledge of either side, make such a decision? And how can she turn away from finally tasting those things she has craved for so long? Published by Tate Publishing and Enterprises, the book is available through bookstores nationwide, from the publisher at www.tatepublishing.com/ bookstore, or by visiting barnesandnoble.com or amazon.com. Bond graduated magna cum laude with her bachelor’s of science in criminal justice.
told. Consumers also need to know that scammers can mask the number from which they are calling by using VoIP, or Voice-overInternet-Protocol, services. That makes it appear as though the call is coming from a trusted business, government office or your home phone. That practice is known as “spoofing.” “These scammers can be very persuasive during these calls,” Morrisey said. “Our Office urges consumers to always remain careful when giving out financial or personal information over the phone.” If you believe you have received one of these phony card fix calls or have concerns about this scam, please call the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-368-8808.

Christian’s Sports Beat: Hurricane golfer plays in classic
By Christian Deiss Professional golfers from around the world will be playing in The Greenbrier Classic and a young Hurricane golfer will join the pros on The Old White TPC Course at The Greenbrier Resort. By winning the State Amateur nearly three weeks ago at The Greenbrier, Brian Anania will have that opportunity.
THEME: NATURAL DISASTERS
The 22-year old won the 95th West Virginia Amateur competition by two strokes over Evan Musari. On the putting green at the Sleepy Hollow Golf Club Anania shared with me his emotions on winning the State Amateur for the first time, “I was thrilled and excited when the final putt dropped. It was great to have my parents there, my dad was caddying for me and my mom rushed out from the gallery and both gave me huge hugs.” The win for Anania came two days before Father’s Day. During the four-day tournament Anania’s dad Geno served caddy for the former Hurricane Redskins golfer and his mom was in the gallery. Anania talked about having his parents being close by, “It meant a lot because they have been there every step of the way for me, supporting me while I was

noon. I asked Anania his thoughts about competing in the tournament, “I am excited to get there and I’m looking forward to it. I honestly don’t know what to expect. It will be my first PGA Tour event so I know it is going to be memorable.” Anania just recently wrapped up his four-year college golf career for the Marshall University Thundering Herd. The classic is played on The Old White TPC Course, the course that was used for rounds two and four in this year’s amateur. Anania told me that will help him, “I have been fortunate enough to play a lot of golf on the Old White throughout my junior and college career. I think playing it in the State Am, under the pressure with the lead in the final group was a huge learning experience.” Anania was the youngest winner of the state
Amateur, since 13-time winner Pat Carter of Huntington. Carter won as a 21-year-old in 1989. Anania will represent the state of West Virginia when he tees off Thursday afternoon. Watching Anania win a number of West Virginia Golf Association events through his career has been Brad Ullman, executive director, “As young as Brian is, it shows the growth of the sport across the state. He has won at every level and I expect him to do well in the Classic.” Caddying for Anania during the Classic will be Jimmy Harrison, Sleepy Hollow’s Golf Professional. Marshall author receives recognition After a dozen years of research and writing, James G. Hollock published his first book titled “Born To Lose: Stanley B. Hoss and the Crime Spree That Gripped a Nation” which tells the violent story of a Pennsylvania cop killer who later confessed to killing a young Maryland woman and h e r child. After h i s conviction, Hoss continued h i s crime James G. Hollock spree in prison through is brutal murder of an African-American corrections officer. Hollock, a 1970 graduate of Marshall University’s Department of Communication Disorders, said he had a 30-year career with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. He held various positions along the way at Western Penitentiary, a maximum security prison in Pittsburgh. It was here Hollock became intrigued with the tale of Stanley B. By Chris Parsons For The Cabell Standard The high school football season has not officially started, but people passing by Cabell Midland High School on Saturday might think differently. That’s because Cabell Midland’s football team hosted a 7-on-7 football tournament, which had nearly 15 teams competing on three different fields on the campus at Cabell Midland. Schools competing were Cabell Midland, George Washington, Nitro, Ravenswood,
Ripley, South Point, and Wayne. Each school entered multiple teams with Cabell Midland entering the most with four teams plus three lineman challenge teams. The 7-on-7 tournament allows high school teams to compete in partial game situations and get away from the day to day practice routine. In the end George Washington won the 7-on-7 tournament and Cabell Midland won the lineman challenge. The West Virginia football high school season officially begins in less than five weeks.
