Barnes Agency thrives By Justin Waybright justin@thecabellstandard.com

Walking through local hospitals as vice president of marketing and public affairs, Jeff Barnes never thought he'd be where he is today. In 2003, he took a leap of faith. It paid off. The local family man opened his own marketing and public affairs office in Hurricane. Now, he is enjoying the fruits of his labor. The Huntington resident is watching his marketing and public relations company - the Barnes Agency - take off, winning multiple awards from the American Advertising Federation and adding a second office in Huntington. "We've continued, especially in the last couple years, to grow at a very rapid rate," Barnes said. "We've doubled in growth in the last two years alone, and that growth will continue in the years to come." The public affairs professional continued, "I'm stoked about this agency - there has been a lot of changes in advertising, and I'm glad we're on the positive end of SEE AGENCY ON PAGE 4

Capito tours Blenko, talks issues By Kelly Stadelman kelly@theputnamstandard.com

During a visit to Blenko Glass, Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito heard about a need for lower energy prices as well as concerns about uncertainty in health care regulations. Capito, who officially filed to run for U.S. Senate last week, visited the landmark glass factory in Milton Friday afternoon. She visited with workers and talked with Vice President and Operations Manager Katie Trippe. “Our industry needs help,” Trippe said. “We need to change the natural gas regulations to make a more open market or create competition in West Virginia … Here we are sitting on top of natural gas and we can’t get it at a lower price. “There is also health care. As a company we want to provide it to our 47 employees. We looked into the new plans but are expecting to pay 50 percent more next year because there is only

Cabell County students will make up six school days due to emergency weather conditions that shut down schools in December and January. The make-up days include March 7, April 21, May 22, May 23, May 27 and May 28. There is one more make-up day in the calendar if the county has another snow day. It falls on April 4. If extra days are needed beyond that, the board of education would have to schedule the make-

CALENDAR FROM PAGE 1 every year, a standard set by the West Virginia Board of Education. According to Jedd Flowers, director of communications for the Cabell County Board of Education, Cabell County has rarely missed that marker. “We don’t miss as much as most of the state because our terrain is a little flatter,” he said. While the school calendar allowed for snow days within the schedule, next year’s calendar is going to be a lot trickier. “The state has been very prescriptive in what is allowable in making sure that students have 180 days of instruction,” Richardson said. “Previously, the ISE days were considered instructional days. This meant that most students actually only attended school for 175 days. “The ISE days will no longer exist, meaning that all students will have 180 days of instruction.” Despite the lack of ISE days, there will still be OSE days (or make-up days) to account for any cancellations. However, if the district uses all of them, as the district is close to doing this year, there will be no safety net of ISE days to make up for it. Therefore, the board of education will have to follow this schedule: * The seventh day would be made up using teacher preparation day. * If school is closed for 8-12 days, the district would make up the day during the five days after the teacher prep day, which is after the end of the scheduled

school year. * If school is closed for 13-17 days, the days would be made up during Spring Break. “It’s going to change the way we do things a little bit,” Flowers said. “We may have days when we have one school that’s in and the rest are out. There’s going to be a lot of individualization next year that you don’t see now.” Richardson explained that each school would be responsible for providing 180 days of instructional days, despite any emergencies that may arise. “These procedures would be followed for individual schools which may be closed for reasons other than snow, such as a lack of electricity or heating, or a chemical spill,” Richardson said. “Every student must have the opportunity for 180 days of instruction.” For example, in cases such as Culloden Elementary, where the school had to shut down for multiple days following a chemical leak that affected the water supply, the particular school would have to make up the day despite the fact that the rest of the district

would not. If make-up days are forced to continue outside of the scheduled school year, teachers will be required to report, despite being outside of their designated contract. Richardson said that teachers who do not report, can have their pay docked or wages garnished, which is the same policy that both Ohio and Kentucky currently have. In addition to ISE days, code Orange days will no longer exist, as the district would not be able to pay staff for a non-instructional day, Flowers said. “We’re going to have to look at what we do very carefully,” he said. Flowers said that while planning make-up days may prove difficult, the district will always think in the best interest of the students. “We are always going to make a decision based on safety. That is our most important duty.” The first school calendar committee meeting took place Jan. 27. Richardson expects to be ready for the first public hearing on Feb. 18.

What do Cabell County School codes mean? Code Red – Teachers and students do not report to school. There is a two-hour delay for district wide administration. Maintenance and mechanic staff report at the normal time. Code Blue – No district employees report. Code Orange – Teachers, administration and other staff report on schedule. Students do not report. Code Green – Teachers report after a one-hour delay. All other staff and administration reports on time. Students report after a two-hour delay.

County aims to fix Comcast, jail bill issues By Justin Waybright justin@thecabellstandard.com

Comcast began transitioning to digital service delivery in Cabell County in December, however, the move has brought with it some frustration among county officials. During the Jan. 23 Cabell County Commission meeting, the topic dominated discussions. County Magistrate Scott Bias made his voice heard. He is unhappy about the $2 fee per cable box and "the faulty equipment that comes with Comcast service." "The boxes...Well, they're junk," Bias said. "The $2 fee is just a moneymaker for them and a way to rip the public off." He then told commissioners, "I think you should call them in and make them explain why they're charging $2 a month when Suddenlink does not." Issues surrounding the digital box remain unclear. However, the equipment is necessary to receive the service's expanded programming, according to a statement from Comcast officials. "We have launched nearly 70 new HD channels since mid-December, meaning our customers in the Cabell County area now have access to over 100 HD programming options," a statement from Adam Pratt, director of public relations for Comcast stated. "Comcast Standard/Expanded Basic customers receive a digital set-top box for their primary out-

let as part of their service package and can get up to two digital adapters for 12 months at no additional cost for additional outlets." Commissioner Bob Bailey said the public voices its concerns about Comcast to him often. "I get more calls from people about Comcast - they can just raise it [the price] anytime they want to, and what upsets me the most is they put on the bill to 'Call the County Commission.'" In a statement, Comcast officials wrote about the transition from analog to digital service, which took place December and continued through January. "To help ensure a smooth transition for customers, analog channels were moved to digital delivery in three phases, the last of which took place on Jan. 22," Pratt stated. "We have been communicating to customers early and often throughout the initiative." County Manager Chris Tatum said he is in contact with Comcast officials to resolve the issues. "We've had meeting after meeting with them, and I understand what you're saying," he said. Tatum said the next move includes conducting a telephone conference with Comcast officials and inviting representatives from the company to the next commission meeting to discuss solutions. "We're in the middle of a 10year franchise agreement with them," he explained. "If there are any residents who have issues, we can help get someone there to fix

them." Next, commissioners discussed the financial woes the county jail bill continues to bring. County leaders still seek a solution in lowering it. "At this point, we're going to have to have help from the legislature, because if our jail bill continues going up, we won't be able to do anything but pay our bills," Tatum explained. "I worry about the winter months, when the population could spike." Commissioner Nancy Cartmill responded, "We do talk about this at every state meeting - we have the city of Huntington and Marshall University, and we pay for all those arrests...We have that cross to bear." Bailey offered a solution. "One simple law could be changed - you pay for your own," he said. The November bill cost the county $249,000. It rose in December, topping out at $272,000. "It's a big expense," Tatum said. "Legislatively, they need to get the per diem down or supplement the county." Commissioners say they will continue to urge state lawmakers for solutions. In other discussions, the Ona Little League received a $3,000 Community Participation Grant for the construction of a picnic shelter and lighting upgrades. The Cabell County Commission meets again at 10 a.m. Thursday Feb. 13 on the third floor of the courthouse. All meetings are open to the public.

Assessor's office offers online filing By Justin Waybright justin@thecabellstandard.com

Filing personal property tax returns at home will soon be a reality for residents. The Cabell County Assessor's Office received an $18,000 West Virginia Broadband Grant to make it happen. Assessor Irv Johnson is excited about the up-

grade. "We'll be only one of three or four counties in the state that offers this to citizens," he said. "Web-based everything is here now, and we have to embrace the change." When campaigning for office, Johnson set forth this goal. Now that it's accomplished, he believes taxpayers will enjoy the new service that begins in July.

"This is going to make it easier for citizens to file, and taxpayers will like that," Johnson said. "We're going to add a link to the website and continue to make it more user friendly." The filing period runs from July 1 to Oct. 1. To access the Cabell County Assessor's webpage, visit www.cabellassessor.com or for information call (304) 526-8687.

Following is the nomination submitted by Midland Meadows Senior Living officials about Haenlein. When you think about things people are passionate about, goats would probably not be the first that comes to mind; unless you are George Haenlein. George’s interest in goats was sparked as a young man growing up in Germany. During World War II, German citizens were subject to a strict rationing system. Every cow, chicken, and pig had to be registered. Many farmers struggled to feed their families with what the government allowed them to keep. Goats were the only animal not monitored by the government. George credits goats for saving his family during the war, as they survived on goat milk, cheese, and meat. After the war, George studied animal nutrition in West Germany. While interviewing for a job in Switzerland, George received a scholarship to attend school in the United States.

During his first summer in the United States, George worked as a farmhand and fell in love with the farmer’s daughter. After finishing his studies in Germany, George returned to America and married Lizzy in 1954. George acquired advanced degrees from the University of Delaware and the University of Wisconsin. He enjoyed a long career as a professor and researcher at the University of Delaware. He played an active role in the resurgence of the goat in America through his involvement in the formation of the International Goat Association and the American Cheese Society. George has published more than 70 articles, journals, and books on the care of goats and other livestock. He has overcome incredible adversity during his life, and credits his success to the sovereign hand of God guiding his life and his faithful wife, Lizzy. The winners or their designee were presented with a memento of the event. The other honorees included: Katherine Draper, resident at Pineview Nursing and Rehabilitation in Harrisville; Billy Halsey, resident at Wyoming Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in New Richmond was recognized posthumously; Donald Lester, resident at McDowell Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Gary; Martha Nichols, resident at Cortland Acres in Thomas was recognized posthumously; and Robert “Bob” Perelman, resident at Edgewood Summit in Charleston.

AGENCY FROM PAGE 1 those changes." More than helping area businesses and organizations grow, Barnes keeps his heart set on West Virginia nonprofits. Philanthropy has remained the backbone of the Barnes Agency for more than 10 years. Why? Barnes believes in giving back what has been given to him. "We've made an aggressive commitment to be very philanthropic and give back to the city and community," he said. "We've only had our office in Huntington, operational for 30 days, but we've already agreed to support organizations such as Huntington Area Food Bank, United Way of the River Cities, Ronald McDonald House of the Tri-State and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the TriState." Barnes continued, "We're providing services to these organizations pro bono, because they are nonprofits with tremendous causes, and we feel like we have the responsibility to give back to the communities that have already expressed their support for us." In pursuit of success, the Barnes Agency staff has worked with organizations such as the Greenbrier, Marshall University, First State Bank and the Big Sandy Superstore Arena, just to name a few. Barnes counts it a blessing to help businesses thrive. In doing

so, his agency continues to prosper, bringing in an average of two new clients a month, while retaining loyal ones. "We are adding new clients on a consistent basis each month and retaining consistent clients yearly," Barnes said. "I believe this trend will continue." So what's next for the veteran marketing professional? Only time will tell. "I hope to double my staff during the next two years," Barnes said. "It's also been highly recommended by a number of friends and clients that I become active in local or state government - I've been giving that consideration, and will continue to consider it down the road." Regardless of the future, one thing is for certain: Barnes will never forget what his father told him years ago. "It often takes a high risk to get a high reward," the business owner recalled. "Is it difficult to make it in West Virginia? Yes, but if you do things right, then I can't think of a more rewarding experience than to make it happen right here in my home state." CAMC Teays Valley adds new ICU unit By Kelly Stadelman kelly@theputnamstandard.com

The staff of CAMC Teays Valley Hospital planned and built a new $3.7 million state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit with patients and families foremost in their minds. “This new unit will provide a much better experience for our patients and their families,” said Randy Hodges, president and CEO of CAMC Teays Valley. “We included our nurses and physicians as well as our ancillary services in designing this new unit to make sure we were meeting all needs. “It was truly built with the ideas of the people who will use the new ICU unit.” Missy Nichols, nurse manager, RN and director of ICU, was one of the key individuals on the planning committee. She had the privilege of opening the doors and unveiling the new ICU addition to the public on Jan. 23. Patients moved in on Monday. The new 8,200-square-foot ICU expansion has eight private rooms with the capacity to expand to 10, if necessary. The old ICU had four semi-private rooms, which caused the capacity of the ICU to drop if there were patients with different infections who had to be isolated. Sara Spencer, infection control nurse and employee health

When it came time to start installing equipment and materials, Spencer was involved. She put up Post-It notes on places where she wanted hand sanitizers. “There are a total of 50 hand sanitizers installed in the new ICU unit,” she said with a smile. “Two outside every door and three in each room to encourage hand hygiene.” Spencer is also happy about the negative air room in the new ICU unit. A negative air room keeps air coming into the room,

she explained. “The door stays closed all the time,” she said. “It can be used for Tuberculosis patients.” Nichols said the expansion was necessary in order to improve the care the hospital provides to its critical care patients. “All of our rooms are private so that families can stay with their loved ones 24/7,” she said. “The larger rooms also make it is easier for medical staff to attend to the patients.” Angela Goddard, director of surgical services, added, “With ICU patients there is often more equipment. The larger rooms makes it easier to do bedside procedures and give physicians space to walk around.” Across from each ICU room are large nursing stations.

Respiratory therapists Chuck Miller and Jody Cross tour the $3.7 million stateof-the-art Intensive Care Unit at CAMC Teays Valley Hospital. “The nurse will have a direct visual with the patients at all time,” Nichols explained. “Each nurse has two patients and plenty of support staff.” In addition to the nurses keeping an eye on patients there are six monitors with camera feeds from each ICU room. “We have a monitor technician who will be monitoring the camera feeds 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” she said. “We will always have visual of patient vitals at all times.” There are three hallways leading to and out of, the new ICU unit – one to surgery and another to the nursing unit. “The third leads directly to a helipad,” Nichols said. “It gives the ability to fly out the patient to Charleston or another hospital if we need, too.”

Since 2006 CAMC has invested more than $10 million in its Teays Valley Hospital. “We have grown as Putnam County’s population has grown,” Hodges said. “We are truly excited about this new expansion.” A new hyperbaric chamber and a 64-slice MRI are among the technology investments CAMC has made this past year. April Bostic, imaging director, said the new technology is very important for patient care. “The hyperbaric chamber helps our patients who require wound care for healing,” she said. “We are also getting ready to a Wide Bore MRI. The image quality will be better and it helps our patients who are claustrophobic.” The new technology will be installed at CAMC Teays Valley Hospital in the next month.

The Cabell Standard After arriving in Huntington to take care of business, things were finally over in the cold black night, but there was a ray of sunshine as I saw my baby girl’s face for the first time. It was on that Saturday 30 years ago that she was born and she is very special. The package that we dropped off at our friend’s house was her brother of 2-1/2 years old. I could not wait to get back home and see him and introduce him to his sister. The day and night may have been cold and dark, but in our hearts, the warmth and light was burning bright.

Velma’sView By Velma Kitchens Sunshine in January As we head to the end of January, I am reminded of a storm 30 years ago that brought snow and very cold, cold weather. I remember the snow was piled up and the driveway had to be shoveled. On a cold Saturday morning we walked down the path

that led to our truck and we got in that truck and headed to Huntington. By the way, we had to make a stop at a friend’s house to drop off something. We were sad to leave our friends house and what we left behind, but we were looking forward to the future.

Leviticus 26:4. (KJV) This year 2014, January has sure had its variety of weather patterns - 59 degrees one day with sunshine; next day a high of 19 with cold rain and wind blowing. Sure glad we humans are not in control of the weather. God knows what He is doing. As He says He will give us rain, sun, and snow in due season. He is the one who lets the new seed grow if you plant it. Christian's Sports Beat: An inside look from one who knows

By: Christian Deiss

There are a lot of issues facing every sport these days such as preventing concussions, performance enhancing drugs (PED’s) and money in college athletics. These topics were just some of the many things that were talked about by former NFL player and current ESPN analyst Merril Hoge at last week’s University of Charleston Speaker Series event, Under Review: The future of Football and the NFL. Before he spoke to the audience, I got a chance to speak with Hoge about some questions I had facing the sports world. I hear exfootball commentators say professional football has changed since they played so I asked Hoge if he agreed with that thought, “I don’t know if it has changed a lot, but I think things are definitely getting cleaned up. I was taught to hit, to play with my shoulder

pads, by one of the greatest coaches ever, Chuck Noll of the Pittsburgh Steelers. In football today they have let things erode just a little bit, getting away from the classic style of playing and started targeting the head area and because it wasn’t a penalty it was okay to play like that, but after they realized the problems from head trauma, the league decided to clean that area up, which I think is a good thing.” I hear my dad say the game of football isn’t as rough as it used to be and I asked Hoge if he thinks that hitting is being taken out of football, “I think that is a misconception and overreaction by the fans and some current and former players, because no one ever said you can’t hit and no one said you can’t hit hard, the NFL just said we don’t want players to deliberately hit around the head, with your head.” Hoge played seven years for the Pittsburgh Steelers 1987 – 1993 and one season for the Chicago Bears in 1994. When I play soccer I wear proper protective equipment to help prevent getting injured. I wanted to know what Hoge thought kids can do to prevent injuries, namely to the head, “You never can prevent it, if you are going to play in contact sports, if you are active, you can’t completely prevent it, it’s impossible to create an environment

that it will never happen. You just try to make things safe and reduce the risk of it happening. You do that by playing the game, any game correctly with the right equipment on. And if it does happen, and there is a possibility that it could, what you want to do is do the right thing with that injury and get the correct treatment from a doctor.” The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Hoge in the 10th round of the 1987 NFL Draft with the 261st pick overall. During a road game against the Kansas City Chiefs, while playing for the Bears, Hoge received a concussion and five days later, the team doctor approved him to resume playing during a telephone call without examining him to determine if he had recovered; he was still suffering post-concussion symptoms. Hoge sustained another concussion several weeks later, and had to be resuscitated after he stopped breathing. He spent 48 hours in the intensive-care unit and was forced to retire due to brain injury. Hoge had to learn to read again and experienced memory loss, confusion and headaches. Because of the head injury Hoge retired. After his recovery, Hoge was hired as an onair analyst for ESPN in 1996. Another issue facing the world of sports in recent years has been PED’s but Hoge thinks the NFL is moving in the right direction in

Christian chats with former NFL running back and current ESPN analyst Merril Hoge at the University of Charleston. taking care of the problem, “With the drug testing that is now taking place in the NFL it has become very hard to get away with using performance enhancing drugs, because if they find out you are using PED’s, you are not going to be playing very long and if you get suspended the loss of income is great.” I tell my dad all the time college athletics is all about money

and not enough about the sport. I again wanted to know what Hoge thought about this, “Money changes a lot of things and college football with their bowl games and now a playoff will always be influenced by the money aspect because it is a business and more people need to understand that fact. Not saying that’s right but that is the way it is now and it’s not going to change.”

Man charged with two counts of first-degree murder A Barboursville man is charged with two counts of firstdegree murder following a shooting near his home, authorities said. According to a release from the Cabell County Sheriff's Department, the shooting occurred Saturday at 12 Lane Drive in

Barboursville. Rodney Bruce Black is accused of shooting and killing Garrick Hopkins, 60, of the Milton area and Carl Hopkins Jr., 61, of Oak Hill. The men were brothers, according to the sheriff’s department. Authorities say Garrick Hop-

kins had recently purchased the lot adjacent to 12 Lane Drive, and he took his brother to his newly purchased lot to show him the property where he and his family were to build a new residence in the coming weeks. The shooting occurred at an outbuilding, which authorities

said was on the Hopkins property and contained no belongings of the suspect, Rodney Black. Cabell County Sheriff's Department detectives said they conducted a search at the suspect's residence and a large number of weapons and ammu-

nition were seized. Black was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, and he was being held in the Western Regional Jail pending further court proceedings. An autopsy of the Hopkins’ brothers was scheduled for Monday.

Lady Knights knock off Nitro By Kelly Stadelman kelly@theputnamstandard.com

Cabell Midland wants to extend its regular season success into the postseason, which means it will need to beat better teams down the stretch. The Lady Knights accomplished that in one of their toughest tests of the season, beating Nitro 67-53. Sierra Jordan scored 21 points and Emily Pitkin had 20 points as the No. 8 Lady Knights won at No. 6 Nitro Friday night. The dynamic inside duo will be a key to success if Cabell Midland (8-1) is to advance in sectional and regional play. “We knew we needed to use our height to our advantage, play good defense and get rebounds,” Jordan said. “We did all three tonight.” Pitkin agreed that the team played good defense. “This was one of our tougher games,” the senior said. “We all came together tonight and played as a team.” Both teams started out shooting well, exchanging baskets during the first eight minutes. At the end of the first quarter Midland led 19-15. The second quarter was the game changer. The Lady Knights scored 23 points to the Wildcats eight and never looked back. “We usually have a quarter where we get it together and play well,” Pitkin said. “Tonight it was the second quarter. We just made our passes and found the open man.” Nitro tried to get back in the game in the third quarter and

Emily Pitkin teams with Sierra Jordan to create major matchup problems for most teams. She had 20 points against the Lady Wildcats.

narrowed the gap by scoring 17 points to Cabell Midland’s 11 points. But the Lady Knights held their ground in the fourth quarter, holding a 12-11 advantage. “We like to run the pick and roll,” Coach Matt Adkins said. “We didn’t budge and kept running plays and making good passes.” Pitkin said the team came into Friday’s game with a plan. “Our main focus was to shut down (Nitro’s) Savannah Shamblin,” Pitkin said.

Stephanie Bias with four. Haggerty, a sophomore, played an aggressive game by driving to the basket and looking for an open teammate. “Tonight was a great experience for the team,” she said. “We played well tonight and kept our heads in the game.” While Adkins was satisfied with how his team handled the pressure against Nitro, he believes there are still some areas the team can work on. “Overall we are headed where

Shamblin wasn’t shut down completely, as she was the leading scorer for Nitro with 27 points. Adkins credited Midland’s teamwork as the reason for the win. “The girls played a great game tonight against a good team,” he said. Other scorers for the Lady Knights included Haley Haggerty with 10 points, Mal Helgadottier with six points, Summer Stevenson with five points and

we need to be,” he said. “There are still some little things we will continue to work on to get better.” Cabell Midland’s only loss of the year was against No. 5 Huntington. Tonight the Lady Knights face Spring Valley, the No. 2 team in Class AAA, away. On Monday Midland takes on South Charleston and on Feb. 5 the team plays Lincoln County at home.

Lucky bounce earns national recognition By Kelly Stadelman kelly@theputnamstandard.com

A new twist on an old play drew national attention to the Cabell Midland boys basketball team. “Sometimes, a lucky bounce makes all the difference http://youtu.be/iPVfJjVA83s (via @herdnationnews),” @ESPN tweeted out at 5:52 p.m. Saturday. “Everyone was excited when they saw ESPN acknowledge the video,” Coach Matt Stead said. During the first quarter of Midland’s game against Lincoln County Friday night, Sawyer Beckett called the Carolina 2-3 in front of a packed house. The team set up the offense and started running the sequence. “We were just running through the offense, making our passes and waiting for someone to get open when I got in the way,”

Jacob Morgan said, smiling. The team passed the ball around the perimeter. On the eighth pass of the play Beckett saw a player open under the basket. He attempted to pass the ball to Kirk Jennings when Morgan, who was standing at the foul line, put up his hands. “I was trying to pass the ball to someone else but Jacob (Morgan) put his hands up,” Beckett said with a laugh. “The ball hit off his palms and went into the basket.” Morgan added, “I didn’t even know what had happened at first. I was shocked that it went in the basket.” Mark Wilcox was getting rest on the bench at the time of the play. “I had to do a double take when it happened,” he said. “I really wasn’t sure what I just saw.” The crowd knew what they had seen and erupted. “They went crazy,” Beckett said

ESPN tweeted out the link to a video where Sawyer Beckett’s pass to Kirk Jennings bounced off of Jacob Morgan’s hands and went in the basket. about the atmosphere. “I don’t think we could ever do it again.” Stead said it was the craziest play he had ever seen. “You had to do a double take,” he said. “You could tell by Jacob’s

reaction, he was in shock.” The day after the game one of the players called Stead and asked him if he would put the clip on YouTube. “I left the video at the office but

stopped by the school on my way to Charleston,” he said. “I didn’t have time to download it so I took a video of the video with my iPhone.” Stead uploaded the video to YouTube and tweeted out the link. “I tweeted it to @ESPN to see if they would pick it up,” he said. “It got shared some but then @Herdnationnews picked it up and tweeted @ESPN too.” The @ESPN tweet was retweeted 179 times and favorited 155. By Monday evening the video had more than 2,000 hits. “We got our 15 minutes of fame,” Stead said. The Knights have experienced a rough season thus far. “It is things like this that can put you on the right path to something positive,” Snead said. Link to video: http://youtu.be/iPVfJjVA83s

Knights let win slip away By Brian Harper For The Cabell Standard

There are times during a season when a team struggles to find its identity. This is especially true right now for the Cabell Midland Knights boys’ basketball team, which finds itself searching for answers after losing to the Nitro Wildcats 63-53. “We try to go up-tempo, and it’s our first year running this system,” Coach Matt Stead said after the game, “but we back off a little bit. It’s like we don’t trust it.” The Jan. 24 game began well for the Knights, who used pressure defense to push the pace early, as they were shooting well and able to get into a rhythm offensively. The rhythm wouldn’t last, however, as Nitro used good three-point shooting to gain the lead late in the first quarter. Once the Wildcats were able to settle down and move through the Knights’ press defense, they found themselves with momentum and led 20-13 at the end of the quarter. The Knights’ struggle was particularly pronounced at the beginning of the second quarter, as they went cold shooting from the field and were unfocused on the defensive end. After a timeout, they had a renewed vigor on defense that swung momentum and allowed them to claw back into the game. Nitro led by seven at the half, 3225. The third quarter was more of the same for Cabell Midland. The Knights were lethargic and unfocused on defense, getting outhustled and outrebounded by the Wildcats before turning the

tide about halfway through the quarter with a 9-0 run. After their run, the Knights took the lead 39-37 and had the momentum heading into the fourth quarter. The Wildcats responded quickly early in the fourth, using their quickness and excellent three-point shooting to regain the lead. To make matters worse for the Knights, they again struggled on offense with cold shooting and mental lapses on defense. Once again, the Knights were able to turn things around about halfway through the quarter, as they pulled to within six, but were unable to get closer. Nitro was able to keep possession and iced the game at the free throw line. “We wanted to play up-tempo and get good transition looks,” Stead said, “but we didn’t do well on the boards and we weren’t able to stop [Nitro guard Trevon] Taylor. We just let a hungry team come in and get us.” Taylor led the Wildcats with 15 points, while Neil Sallada and Ian Lee each added 14 for Nitro. Sawyer Beckett led the Knights with 17 points, followed by Coy Pettit with 9 points and Mark Wilcox with 8. After the game, the Cabell Midland players were aware of the need to find themselves and work together. “We have to play as a team,” said senior forward Jacob Martin. “The five players on the floor playing together as a team are what matters,” added junior guard Mark Wilcox. Cabell Midland won’t have much time to rest as they play Spring Valley Friday night at home and South Charleston on

“These types of issues are the ones that are hurting you and other employers in West Virginia. “We need to make it easier to do business in West Virginia so that you and others can employ more people.” Capito also spoke about the recent water contamination problems experienced in the region and actions the federal government will undertake. “In February the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee will hold public hearings in Charleston to find out what the facts are and to find out where the gaps are,” she said. “What disturbs me the most is that it happened and we didn’t know how to address it.” The Republican congresswoman, who currently represents the 2nd District, is expected to face Democrat Secretary of State Natalie Tennant in November’s general election for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Jay Rockefeller. During her tour of the 93-yearold glass factory, Capito heard about the raw materials Blenko uses to make its famous handblown glass and visited the formulation room. “We can match any pantone color to glass,” Trippe explained. “We use the formula room for special and custom orders.” Capito also toured the furnace room, where she had the opportunity to speak with workers and learned about the production process. Trippe said that most of the workers have been with Blenko for 25 to 30 years. “We run an eight- to 10-hour

We could make them 365 days a year and still never meet the demand. We are able to make 42 an hour.” After watching a crew of Blenko employees make bowls and vases, Capito was invited to participate in the hand-blown glass process. She watched while three workers prepped the glass and then climbed the stairs to make her own hand-blown vase. With one employee holding the mold and one holding the pole, Capito blew until the glass filled the mold. “I told you I had a lot of hot air,” she said smiling afterward. Trippe told Capito about the quality control process and spoke about the architectural glass manufactured by Blenko.

“We are the only company in the U.S. who still produces handblown sheet glass for use in stained glass,” Trippe said. Before leaving, Capito thanked Trippe and employees for the tour and visit. The last time Capito visited Blenko Glass was nearly 33 years ago when her son was in first grade. She vowed she wouldn’t wait that long before her next visit.

Young Life gives students chance to experience God By Heather Barker Cabell Midland High School

Every Monday evening, students from surrounding high schools find themselves coming together for one purpose: celebrating life with God. Young Life club has been an organization for adolescents to be immersed in God and his word since 1938. Jim Rayburn started the club in Gainesville, Texas, to try to introduce God to local high school students who had never experienced him before. “Young Life is an organization that helps high school students not just morally, but also socially,” said junior Quest Van Daele. When Rayburn started a weekly club for kids, songs were sung, skits were performed and a simple message about Jesus Christ was given. These main concepts are still practiced in today’s clubs. “It’s just a really laid-back outreach,” said sophomore Emily Lewis. “We sing, do skits, play games and do a lesson at the end.” Young Life’s outreach has expanded from one club in Texas to hundreds of clubs in nearly every state.

The club takes place in Huntington, where mostly Huntington High students make up the majority of attendees. With more and more students joining Young Life, students from Cabell Midland want to establish their own club closer to home. “We have about 11 people from Midland who come to club,” said junior Koriana Blevins. “We would like to see more Midland students come in so we can make our own club and have better participation.” Over the summer, Young Life members traveled to camp in New York. There, they took part in several activities while celebrating God. “We went to New York, where we had club every day and did pretty much whatever we wanted to,” said Lewis. “We got to play games and go out on canoes and go water skiing.” Club days are every Monday night from 7:29 to 8:49 p.m. in Huntington. Location of club meetings change often, so students can ask members of Young Life, such as Blevins, Lewis, Van Daele or Brianna Crouse. Information about the history of Young Life was found at http://www.younglife.org/Abo utYoungLife/History.htm.

Some students try to balance jobs with school responsibilities By Morgan Cummings Cabell Midland High School

For some students at Cabell Midland, the hard work during school hours doesn’t end at 3:05 p.m. Having a job in high school can be difficult, but it has its pros and cons. “Having a job gives you extra spending money as well as discounts at some places, but having a job also means late hours and less free time,” said senior Andrew Dornan. It can be difficult balancing school and work because of the long work hours, but that is part of the sacrifices of having a job. “Having a job while still in school teaches responsibilities,” said health sciences teacher Lisa Templeton. “However, students have a lot of school work, and it’s hard to keep school as the number one thing.” Some jobs have late hours, and despite employment laws for minors, not all businesses are concerned about the affect it has on students and their school work. “I have had several students come into class worn out due to having worked late hours the night before,” said Templeton. Picking the right job can be difficult, but when picking a job, there are several things to think about and consider. “Students should definitely find a job that they enjoy doing,” said Templeton. “Students should find a field that they are interested in going into. If they

Many Cabell Midland students balance their time around being a teenager, having a job and focusing on their schoolwork. Balancing their time between three different priorities can be a big commitment for those students.

are planning on going into college, they should start at the bottom with a job in that field and then work their way up.” There are good and bad aspects that come with having a job as a full-time high school student, but keeping education as

the top priority is important as well as making sure the right job is picked. Finding jobs can be done by reading the newspaper or searching on different Internet sites such as www.local.com or www.findtherightjob.com.
