Ona Honors Hero By Justin Waybright justin@thecabellstandard.com
ONA - Murrill Ivan Chapman answered his last call of duty Thursday afternoon. Fire Engine ladders towered toward the bright sun. An American flag wrinkled and stretched in the crisp air. A somber atmosphere of honor saturated U.S. 60. It was as if the whole community of Ona stopped. People lined both sides of the road to pay respects toward a man who selflessly served and loved. Shortly after 1 p.m., fire engines, police and family led the fallen fireman underneath the soaring fire truck ladders. Chapman’s son Brian will never forget his father’s love toward everyone. “He made everybody smile,” said Chapman. “He loved everybody and loved life - he never knew a stranger, and he was always there to help.”
The friendly firefighter is also remembered as a caring husband by his wife Anna. She remembered how their relationship began more than 52 years ago. “We just started out as friends and fell in love,” she said. “We were always able to communicate.” Chapman shared countless memories with her husband that no one can erase. When she remembers him, she remembers how he loved. “He served his community, served the Lord and helped people,” said Chapman. “He loved everybody…I loved him and he was good to me.” Chapman served in the Ona Volunteer Fire Department for more than 30 years. Fellow firefighters called him “Papaw.” Ona Fire Chief Tim McCallister will never forget his co-worker and best friend. McCallister learned most of what he knows about putting out fires in houses and in life from Chapman. “I learned everything, watch-

Racking up Arrests By Justin Waybright justin@thecabellstandard.com
MILTON - Within three days, police officers busted four people on unrelated felonies. Authorities placed in custody Clifford Vanperson, 26; Anthony Vanperson, 27; Michael Clagg,
41; and Ethan Scarberry, 22 for various crimes. It all started during the weekend, officers said. Anthony Vanperson broke into a woman's home Sunday night and attempted to burglarize her Hickory Way residence, explained authorities. He saw the tenant and fled on foot.
"She [the resident] helped in the investigation and started asking around to find out where he was staying at," said Milton Patrolman D.T. Bishop. "People are starting to step up and call in to us." After locating the suspect, local authorities questioned him. Vanperson's brother Clif-
ford, waited outside the police department. After running a scan on Clifford, police saw he had felony warrants for an attempted 1st degree armed robbery. The single arrest turned into a double-felony snatch for Milton SEE ARRESTS ON PAGE 4
