Counselors improve services By Amanda White For The Cabell Standard

Cabell County guidance counselors are working together to improve access to school counseling services for all students by increasing counseling standards and creating a districtwide school-counseling curriculum. “In 2003, the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) created the national model which calls for consistency and for all school counselors to look toward academic achievement, career planning, and personal and social development,” said Christine Gleason, guidance counselor at Milton Middle School. “Today the role of our Cabell County counseling team is changing.” Gleason is one of eight counselors that serves on Cabell County’s Guidance Counselor Leadership Team. Members of the Milton Volunteer Fire Department stick together like brothers and sisters. Countless fathers, grandfathers, sons and daughters extinguish fires throughout the county. By Justin Waybright justin@thecabellstandard.com

A bond stronger than water helps 54 brave men and women extinguish fires across Cabell County. The Milton Volunteer Fire De-

partment is a testament to selfless service and undeniable love. Inside its doors, fathers hug their sons, cousins greet their nephews and daughters smile at their fathers. It's here where solid relationships are born. It's here where children dream of putting on their

parent's uniform one day. It's here where danger is faced and courage is forged. Fire Chief Brent Taylor joined the department in 1987. His father and fireman Cecil Taylor inspired him. While growing up, he watched him race to and from fires, rescuing residents and put-

ting out flames. Taylor recalled one night when it took every fire department in the county to put out a fire. "I was 7 or 8-years-old and dad got a call about a house fire at Sunset View, so we went in the SEE COURAGE ON PAGE 4

Students named National Merit Semifinalists By Justin Waybright justin@thecabellstandard.com

ONA - Three students from Cabell Midland High School have been named National Merit Semifinalists. Brodie Wallace, Cart Sutton and Ian Burcl-Gonzalez achieved the academic recognition. To excel as a national merit semifinalist, the three had to hold strong GPAs and attain high marks on the PSAT. "It feels good that my hard work in scholastics has paid off," Wallace said. "My parents

pushed me to try my hardest in classes, and I credit my success to them." Sutton is not involved in many extracurricular activities, so for him, the accomplishment is something valuable he can add to a college application. "This can help show that I do well on the things I do, and should help with college," he said. Burcl-Gonzalez used the PSAT as a way to gauge how well he had retained academic information. Running Away Have you ever thought of running away from your life as it is? Just loading up the car and heading out on the interstate and not knowing where you are going, just going away? Well, I think we all “feel” like that but our feelings must be kept in check. Feelings are deceiving. We are human, but really, when you do get to where you end up, problems are still with you and the things you are running from are still staring at you in your face. When we were growing up, my

Dad would get the notion to move to another state and start over with his family and a new job, and this is where my travelling days when I was young began. Dad somehow always found a job, but back in the late 60's if you quit one job you could always find another anyway. Dad would always find a job no matter where we were. We crossed the Chesapeake Bay bridge to go to Maryland and we kids loved the bridge (I think Dad was somewhat leery of the bridge).

The Cabell Standard Living Series, hosted by a different Cabell Huntington Hospital physician each month. On Tuesday, Dec. 3 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Dr. Marc Hettlinger will lead a discussion about cholesterol – the good and the bad – and how to manage both. He will be joined by registered dietitians Tiffany Lockhart and Jeremy Mullins, who will explain the role of cholesterol in a healthy diet. Participants in this free program will gain insight into interpreting cholesterol results and how cholesterol relates to vascular disease, learn about tasty and healthy recipes that are easy to prepare at home and sample a variety of healthy, delicious foods prepared during a live cooking demonstration. Seating is limited and RSVP is required. To reserve a spot in this session of the Healthy Living Series, please RSVP by contacting Joy Dalton at 304-522-0887 or Joy.Dalton@chhi.org.

But we kept moving back home to West Virginia and head out again somewhere else in the future. When we came back to West Virginia most of the time Dad would find a house for rent, but when he didn't and he had to work to save the money, we would stay with my Grandma Carpenter until we moved into our new house. No matter where we moved we always came back to West Virginia. So, what’s the moral of this story? The grass is not greener on the other side of the state. Why not just stick it out where you are and ask the Lord for His help and guidance? I read a quote somewhere and the quote said “feelings come and feelings go, and feelings are deceiving, my merit is the Word of God, nothing else is worth believing”. How true it is.

A $15,000 grant will help propel the growing Milton Performing Arts Center forward. State representatives presented Pumpkin Festival President Bill Kelley the check, secured through a Community Participation Grant from the governor's office, Friday. Kelley is thankful for the support. More than $40,000 has been put into the auditorium's lighting, video and ventilation system this year. "Without state support and funding, it would be very difficult to guarantee the money to carry out the programs we have," Kelley said. Del. Jim Morgan, D-Cabell is

glad to help. "We have provided funds for the Pumpkin Park for a number of years, and this grant is something we hope to make annually," he said. "The ability to have the shows they do is a great economic benefit to the area - Milton has the opportunity of being between Charleston and Huntington to continue growing, and I think they got a great future ahead of them." Del. Kelli Sobonya, R-Cabell shared his sentiment. "I think it's not only a great opportunity for Milton, but for Cabell County as a whole," she said. "This helps showcase our community to other legislators - the Pumpkin Park is wonderful for every generation, from children to senior citizens."

Village Addresses Parking Issues By Justin Waybright justin@thecabellstandard.com

BARBOURSVILLE - City leaders attempted to solve parking problems by changing the traffic flow of two streets. The issues sparked a lengthy debate among council members during their meeting Tuesday Nov. 19. They addressed troubles on Ralston Avenue and Thornburg Road. Ralston is two-way and Thornburg is one-way. Often, parking along the road hinders the natural flow of traffic, explained Police Chief Mike Coffey. After studying the two roads, he brought a solution to the council. "We can change Ralston from Blake Street to Lee Street, oneway, going north," he said. "We can reverse the one-way on Thornburg, going south." Mayor Paul Turman said ongoing issues have surrounded both roads. "I've had complaints on them," he said. "If we change, this will affect residents on Ralston and Thornburg." Councilmember Paul Hockenberry showed reluctance to approve the changes. "We've never had any accidents - all this originates from one house with two families and four cars," he explained. "Maybe the thing to do is put off-street parking." Hockenberry continued, "It's

just the people that's been there for years - that's my concern." Coffey shifted the discussion. "I think the safety concern outweighs the convenience for the residents," he said. Turman made the motion to approve the changes. "It's going to be an adjustment more than an inconvenience," he added. Councilmember Dick Spencer asked, "Will this take care of the problem?" Turman responded, "We're thinking it will." Councilmember Donnie Plybon seconded the motion made by the mayor. "Once this takes place, Thornburg will inevitably see more traffic - I'd like to see this street upgraded - it's narrow," Plybon said. "It's one street in town that could use upgrades." Turman responded. "We need to take care of the safety issue today," he said. The council approved the change.

Next, council members tackled another problem: the aging shelter #7 playground at Barboursville Park. They approved a resolution to accept a $14,000 corporate grant from Game Time. "The old playground holds water - it's really old and wooden, and it needs some repair," said Finance Director Diana Roy. Next, the mayor read a letter from the fire department, commending newly hired police officers Bobby Minnix and Charles Seay in a job well-done during a vehicle accident Nov. 4. According to the letter, Seay and Minnix responded to the crash and stayed with the victims until EMS crews arrived. "Both officers went above and beyond the call of duty," the letter stated. Turman added, "The officers do a good job and it often goes unnoticed." Coffey agreed. "These are brand new guys and I'm real proud of them," the chief said.

“THANKSGIVING TO GOD” Thought for the week: Philippians 4:6 - Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. (KJV) During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the fourth Thursday in the month of November as a day of (quote) “Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens”. Today 2013, it is observed as a National holiday, but changes are already in the process. It would not be a surprise that by the year 2015, we will no longer have any holidays connected with Christianity - they will be called Happy Holidays - including Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years day. Our hearts can always thank God for eyes that see, a heart that forgives, a mind that remembers and a soul that never loses faith in God. As once again we gather with

our loved ones around the table to feast and thank Him for this Thanksgiving, let us not forget the homeless. Mission housing can only fill the stomach and rest temporarily. Remember the military that are far away from homeland. Remember those in prisons - they are humans who have made bad choices in life. Our conscious never leaves us Think of those seeking jobs to provide for their families and the ones who suffer the many various illnesses thru life as well as so many other situations. Then take a good look at yourself. Aren’t you blessed this day? Take a moment and count your blessings. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 - In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Now, for a smile - for three decades the Butterball-Turkey hotline has answered the desperate calls of turkey day questions, here are a few funnies that have actually happened: When a talk-line staffer asked a

The Cabell Standard caller what state her turkey was in (meaning how thawed was it) the caller responded with “Florida”. A gentleman called to tell the operator that he cut his turkey in half with a chain saw and wanted to know if she thought the oil from the chain saw would affect the turkey taste. A disappointed woman called wondering, why her turkey had no breast meat - after a conversation with a talk-line operator, it became apparent the woman’s turkey was lying on the table upside down. The great turkey expansion – a new bride cooking Thanksgiving dinner for the first time in a small apartment sized oven - wanted to make sure her turkey wouldn’t expand during cooking (as baked goods do) and thus get stuck in the oven. As a young wife myself, the first time I cooked a turkey, I discovered the giblet bag while carving, no one ever knew and it didn’t affect the taste. Such as life - you live and learn. Enjoy and give thanks for this day and each day God gives us. I wish a blessed Thanksgiving Day to you and yours! Prayer: Our Father who art in Heaven,Thank you every day, for our daily bread, and for all your guidance too. Amen.

COURAGE FROM PAGE 1 truck and shuttled water all night," the chief remembered. "It was so cold - about 0-degrees outside. As soon as you'd turn the water off, the hoses would freeze." The younger Taylor had firefighting in his blood. Even when he could barely walk, the toddler would put on his father's pager, boots, jacket and fire helmet. "As a kid, I thought it was fun, riding in fire trucks with the lights on," Taylor said. Cecil joined the department after watching firefighters extinguish a blaze near his house. Upon graduating high school in 1962, he became a firefighter. "I watched them put out the fire above my house and just thought I'd like to help them," Taylor said. "I've been here ever since." The Taylors have a strong relationship. Their father-son bond is undeniable. Cecil is proud to have his son as fire chief. "He's got a good, level-head on him - I think he gets it from his dad," he laughed.

Another generation raised in the fire department is the Goodpaster family. Merle, Marvin, Tyler, Cody and Emily Goodpaster make four generations of Milton firefighters. "It just gets in your blood," Marvin Goodpaster said, looking toward his family. Such is the case with Tyler. Since he was in diapers, he has watched his father and grandfather put on their uniforms, answering countless calls. "I always wanted to follow in their footsteps," Goodpaster said. The young man joined the Milton Fire Department in 2010. His sister Emily joined last week. "I watched my brother, my dad and my grandpa, and I wanted to save lives and start with the fire department," she said. Marvin Goodpaster enjoys answering calls with his family. "We followed the footsteps of our grandfathers and fathers, and now our kids are following in our footsteps" he said. Tim Chastain grew up watching

his father Kenny Chastain put out fires with the Milton Fire Department. His brothers are firefighters as well. When asked what inspired him to join, the Asst. State Fire Marshal said, "Mostly, the adrenaline rush of knowing what's going on and seeing it first-hand and being part of it." Chastain has served in the fire department since 1998. He looks toward his fellow comrades with pride. "Our department is structured for every age group, which is part of a family of seniors to juveniles this is an organization you can be part of no matter your age or limitations," Chastain said. "We rely on all our members to handle situations that arise, and we're fortunate to have older members for the day shift and younger for the night shift - we're blessed with a lot of good men and women in our department." Chief Taylor looked toward them - 54-members-strong - and smiled. "We have a bond, like a brotherhood, and if any firefighters need help, everyone binds together to help," he said. "We're keeping what our forefathers built here going."

Christian's Sports Beat: From Keyser to ESPN

By: Christian Deiss

CHARLESTON - It’s every little leaguer’s dream to someday play in the big leagues, one of those little leaguers to make it was John Kruk, who grew in Keyser, W.Va. For 10 seasons Kruk played first base and designated hitter in the major leagues for the San Diego Padres, Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago White Sox. Now you can see him on ESPN as a baseball analyst. At the recent West Virginia Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Culture Center in Charleston, Kruk was one of the hosts of the event. Before the show I got to chat with Kruk about his baseball career, growing up in Keyser and his current job. Kruk compared for me baseball now to baseball when he played in the majors from 1986 to 1995. “The players are bigger, they throw harder. There seems

to be maybe strategies that are a little different because of all of the guys that can hit home runs now. They don’t bunt as much; they don’t steal bases as much like in my era. There isn’t as much importance on running as it used to be, teams seem to just want to find some sluggers and pound you into the ground type of deal.” Kruk had a season best of 18 stolen bases in 1987, when he also hit .313 with 20 home runs and 91 runs batted in. Performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) started to make the scene in locker rooms near the end of his career. After he retired, PEDs became an everyday occurrence for a number of players. I asked Kruk if he felt that the substance abuse affected baseball and he was blunt on the subject. “It ruined it (baseball) for a while because guys were making a joke of it, pitchers that were throwing 88, 89 (mph) now were throwing 100. Guys that were hitting 15 to 20 homers were now hitting 40, 50, 60 homers.” For his career Kruk hit .300, with 100 home runs and 592 runs batted in. One of my favorite players is Chris Davis of the Baltimore Orioles who hit 53 home runs and knocked in 138 runs last season. A few sports writers wrote that they suspected Davis of possibly taking PEDs, something that I don’t believe was true. Kruk feels for those players now performing

Christian interviewing John Kruk before this year’s WV Music Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Courtesy Photo at new levels. “I think anytime you see greatness, guys doing something that others can’t, especially in baseball now, there is always going to be that suspicion because of the sport’s past issues with the matter. That’s the sad thing when a guy puts up huge numbers that’s the first questions from the media, not wow he is really great but he must be on something and that to me stinks.” Before playing professional baseball, Kruk played for Keyser High School, Potomac State College and at Allegany Community College.

I wanted to know what it was like growing up in Keyser and playing baseball in that small community. “We actually didn’t play that much baseball growing up, we played our standard 15 to 20 games in high school and 15 to 20 games in the summer and that was it. Not like today with travel teams, elite camps and 8year-olds playing a hundred games a year. I just played it because I loved it and I had three older brothers who love it too.” Kruk signed as a #3 Special Draft selection on June 13, 1981 with the San Diego Padres, making to

the majors in 1986. Kruk’s favorite team growing up was the Cincinnati Reds. “My grandfather, who lived in Boone County, would always listen to the Reds on the radio. He loved the Reds and he told me one day he hoped I would play for them, never did, but almost got traded to them by the Padres but the deal fell through.” On July 30, 1995, as a member of the Chicago White Sox, in a game at Baltimore’s Camden Yards, Kruk singled and retired standing on first base, taking himself out of the game, never to play again. These days during the baseball season, Kruk serves a baseball analyst for ESPN. You can see him on Baseball Tonight. I asked Kruk what is it like working for the world’s largest sports network. “It’s fun, it keeps me in the game and with my job as an analyst, now I am a hitting coach, pitching coach, manager, general manager and at the end of the day I don’t lose games. So that’s a great thing, I’m undefeated as an ESPN analyst.” During his career, Kruk was three-time All-Star as a member of the Phillies and played in the 1993 World Series for Philly. It’s was fun meeting Kruk and watching him on West Virginia Public Television later that night and I can’t wait to see him again on ESPN. Maybe I can be like him someday.

STUDENTS FROM PAGE 1 Merit Semifinalist was an unexpected honor. "I had some hopes that I'd do well, I just didn't know how well I'd do," he said. "I was surprised when I found out I made it into the top semifinalists." Cabell Midland Guidance Counselor John Stinespring is proud of the three young men.

He believes the academic achievements will give the students a boost toward their collegiate future. "This is something very few people can say when they fill out their college applications," Stinespring said. "It speaks to their study skills and their great potential to be successful in college."

Cox Landing’s ‘A Time to Give Thanks’

Exercise keeps students healthy, energized Story by Kanyon Nelson Cabell Midland High School

Cabell Midland offers a variety of extracurricular sports every semester such as soccer, football and cross country, but some students take these physical activities to another level. “After practice, I will go to my house and do extra workouts just to keep my fitness at a level where I can compete every week,” said sophomore Josh Ellis. Ellis is currently a member of the Cabell Midland football team and is a contributing running back on the junior varsity and varsity team, with at least one touchdown every game. “I will normally run a lot of sprints, and then, I work my core by doing multiple pushups and sit-ups,” Ellis said. “It’s not about just staying in shape for football, it leads to me being healthy in life.”

Some students at Cabell Midland find many different activities to participate in to stay fit and healthy. “I usually ride a bike and run after school a lot to stay in shape,” senior Adam Johnston said. “It just helps with your life too, keeping your body healthy and living a good life.” According to the New York Times Health, when someone is conditioning and running, it is important that they get plenty of liquids, such as water and vitamin drinks. “I drink multiple bottles of water after I work out,” Johnston said. “It replenishes me and doesn’t make me feel weak.” Some students say that a workout not only increases their weight and other movements, but it also leads to a healthy lifestyle. “I think if I keep exercising a lot, I’ll be able to stay in good shape and live a good life,” Johnston said.

Freshman Gabby Childers continues to stay active and fit during school. Many students use the wellness center to get their daily activity in for the day. There are spinning bikes, treadmills, weight machines and stair steppers available for students to use to keep in shape.

Nineteen athletes will represent three area high schools during the Footlocker Cross Country Championship Saturday Nov. 30 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Cabell Midland is sending 11; Winfield six and Hurricane two. Andrew Short, Allison Short, Katie Riedel, Austin Jordan, Jonathan Hathaway, Jeremiah Parlock, Hunter Adkins, Luke Short, Will Sheils, Brandon Atkinson and Nick Salmons are the Knights competing in the race. Salmons placed 8th at the West Virginia AAA State Cross Country Meet Saturday Nov. 2, logging a time of 16:16 or 5:15 per mile pace for the hilly 5k course. He aims to break 16 minutes Saturday. "I'm ready to see what I can do on a national level," the all-state runner said. "I'm going to have to have a strong mindset- it's not going to come easy." Allison Short placed among the top 35 runners at the West Virginia Girls AAA State Cross Country Meet. The freshman logged a time of 21:20 or 6:53 per mile for the 5k race. She hopes to run under 21 minutes at Footlocker. "I'm going to go in and have fun and do my best," Short said. "I will stay smooth, relaxed and be praying for a positive mindset." She will race with fellow runner Tori Dent from Hurricane High School. Dent is excited to have the chance to compete against some of the nation's best. "This is my last year at Footlocker, and I've worked really hard all year," the senior said.

Dent will follow in her sister Alex Dent's footsteps. She is the 2009 state cross country champion. The Hurricane graduate ran a 19:15 during that race. Dent hopes to beat her sister's time at the Footlocker race. "I want to run a sub-18:00," she said. Luke Miller will also represent the Redskins at the meet. The senior is excited to compete in his last high school cross country race. "This is going to be a once-ina-lifetime experience," Miller said. "It's very humbling to know that I will be competing against a vast group of talent, and this will inspire me to do my best." He ran an 18:31 at the state meet, but hopes to beat that time. "My goal is to break 18, place well and maybe get some redemption," Miller said. The Redskin will race with fellow Winfield runners R. J. Weiford, Matt Durgin, Braxton Castro, Brian Gray, Nathan Machel and Tony Salgado. R. J. Weiford placed 9th at the state meet with a time of 16:17. The sophomore is ready to run well Saturday. "It's an honor to see how I will compare against some of the nation's best," the all-state runner said. "I want to get as close to the low 15:30’s as possible." To accomplish this, he runs with fellow teammates every day, logging more than 60 miles a week. "We're keeping the same structure with speed workouts, tempo runs and base runs," Salgado said. "We're putting the miles in and getting our endurance up." Machel hopes his last high school cross country race will

end with a personal record. "I want to keep improving, and as a senior there are not many opportunities to do this much longer, so I'm going to take advantage of it," he said. The young man summed up an attitude shared by many competitive runners. "When our hearts override our minds, there's nothing we can't do," Machel said.

Matt Durgin, Brian Gray, Braxton Castro, R. J. Weiford, Tony Salgado, Nathan Machel will represent the Generals at the 2013 Footlocker Cross Country Championship.

The Cabell Standard

Guyandotte Elementary holds ‘Kiss the Pig’ contest Guyandotte Elementary had the privilege of being a part of the SCALE program again this year. The whole school attended the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra's performance of The Song of the Wolf at the Clay Center where Maestro Cooper recast The Three Little Pigs in WV. Each classroom created and implemented their own lessons and units to prepare the children for the performance. Mrs. Bane's 4th grade class collaborated and decided to implement a "Kiss the Pig" Contest. They decided to set a goal for each classroom to raise $50 to be donated to the Wayne/Cabell Animal Shelter. Each Friday the students collected, counted, graphed, and reported the earn-

ings, while cheering each classroom to their goal. Each class that raised the $50 by the end of the four-week period would get to vote on a teacher of their choice to "Kiss the Pig."

The contest ended and the school raised $528.00 for the animal shelter. The money and newspapers will be delivered to the shelter over the holidays.

SCHOOL FROM PAGE 1 Nov. 20 regular meeting. Cabell County hired a consultant to put together the county’s leadership team and guide its problem solving, one of which is an inability to perform the amount of counseling services necessary. According to Gleason, West Virginia mandate states that guidance counselors must spend at least 75 percent of their time directly counseling students, but this is not happening in Cabell. “Our student to counselor ration makes upholding this mandate difficult,” she said. “This can be difficult to implement without support of administration and faculty.” The ASCA recommends there to be one counselor for every 250 students. Cabell County Elementary Schools have one counselor per 822 students while Cabell Middle Schools and High Schools have one counselor per 361 students and 317 students, respectively. James Wagner, guidance counselor at Huntington East Middle School, showed the school board a compilation of counselor logs

from the month of October. Elementary school counselors logged 70 percent of their time in direct service capacities while middle school and high school guidance counselors logged just 45 percent. According to Wagner, the lower numbers among Middle School and High School guidance counselors are due to time intensive duties such as test coordination, scheduling, and lunch duties, all of which are not included in a traditional guidance counselor role. “This impedes our ability to directly serve students,” he said. “There is a difference between us doing our fair share and doing excess.” In an interview after the meeting, Wagner said he wants to increase the percentage of direct services to not only meet the state issued mandate, but to also meet the need of students. “We believe in our programs, we believe in what we do, and we believe it makes a better experience for students,” Wagner said. “We take pride in the fact that we

counselor leadership team is working on a district wide curriculum. The curriculum will be com-

posed of topic mapping specific for each grade level. This way, a student who transfers within the district will receive the same classroom guidance as they would have before they transferred. Wagner said following the ASCA standards would better the quality of guidance counseling throughout the county. “It is student focused, it is data driven, it is goal oriented,” he said. “The model provides structure and a system for utilizing best practices when it comes to providing counseling services.” The leadership team told the school board that the mapping process of the curriculum should be completed by the next school year. “We want parents to know that we’re here for their children,” Wagner said. “We’re trying to do our best to help all parents and their children.” The Cabell County School Board meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 5:30 p.m. All general meetings are open to the public.
