Courage, service and family

Counselors improve services By Amanda White For The Cabell Standard

Cabell County guidance counselors are working together to improve access to school counseling services for all students by increasing counseling standards and creating a districtwide school-counseling curriculum. “In 2003, the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) created the national model which calls for consistency and for all school counselors to look toward academic achievement, career planning, and personal and social development,” said Christine Gleason, guidance counselor at Milton Middle School. “Today the role of our Cabell County counseling team is changing.” Gleason is one of eight counselors that serves on Cabell County’s Guidance Counselor Leadership Team. The team spoke with the Cabell County Board of Education during the SEE SCHOOL ON PAGE 16

Members of the Milton Volunteer Fire Department stick together like brothers and sisters. Countless fathers, grandfathers, sons and daughters extinguish fires throughout the county. By Justin Waybright justin@thecabellstandard.com

A bond stronger than water helps 54 brave men and women extinguish fires across Cabell County. The Milton Volunteer Fire De-

partment is a testament to selfless service and undeniable love. Inside its doors, fathers hug their sons, cousins greet their nephews and daughters smile at their fathers. It's here where solid relationships are born. It's here where children dream of putting on their

parent's uniform one day. It's here where danger is faced and courage is forged. Fire Chief Brent Taylor joined the department in 1987. His father and fireman Cecil Taylor inspired him. While growing up, he watched him race to and from fires, rescuing residents and put-

ting out flames. Taylor recalled one night when it took every fire department in the county to put out a fire. "I was 7 or 8-years-old and dad got a call about a house fire at Sunset View, so we went in the SEE COURAGE ON PAGE 4

Students named National Merit Semifinalists By Justin Waybright justin@thecabellstandard.com

ONA - Three students from Cabell Midland High School have been named National Merit Semifinalists. Brodie Wallace, Cart Sutton and Ian Burcl-Gonzalez achieved the academic recognition. To excel as a national merit semifinalist, the three had to hold strong GPAs and attain high marks on the PSAT. "It feels good that my hard work in scholastics has paid off," Wallace said. "My parents

pushed me to try my hardest in classes, and I credit my success to them." Sutton is not involved in many extracurricular activities, so for him, the accomplishment is something valuable he can add to a college application. "This can help show that I do well on the things I do, and should help with college," he said. Burcl-Gonzalez used the PSAT as a way to gauge how well he had retained academic information.
