WV Public Broadcasting Documentary Garners Regional Emmy CHARLESTON, WV - The historical documentary Frank Kearns: American Correspondent, which premiered on West Virginia PBS last fall, has won a regional Emmy Award in the “Documentary “Historical” category from the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Frank Kearns: American Correspondent is a profile of a native West Virginian who was a pioneer broadcast reporter for CBS and later a journalism professor at West Virginia University. The documentary is co-produced, written and directed by Jake Davis, executive producer at Greenbriar Group Films in Columbia, S.C. and former student of Kearns; and West Virginia Public Broadcasting’s award-winning

producer and videographer Chip Hitchcock whose works include West Virginia: The Road to Statehood, Bridgeport to Baghdad and The Last

Mission: Establishing the Rule of Law in Iraq. The documentary was narrated by Jean Snedegar, an independent producer in Elkins, and

edited by West Virginia Public Broadcasting senior producer John Nakashima. This is the fifth documentary edited by Nakashima that has won a regional Emmy. Lincoln Scholar to Speak on the Creation of West Virginia CHARLESTON, WV - One of the nation’s leading Abraham Lincoln scholars will deliver the 2013 McCreight Lecture in the Humanities at the state Culture Center in October. Harold Holzer will present “Emancipating West Virginia: Abe Lincoln Creates a State” at 7:30 p.m. on October 17. The annual McCreight Lecture is a program of the West Virginia Humanities Council. Mr. Holzer’s lecture is one of many Civil War and Statehood Sesquicentennial programs delivered by the Humanities Council over the past four years. Harold Holzer is Chairman of the Abraham Lincoln Bicenten-

nial Foundation, official successor organization of the U.S. Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, which he co-chaired for nine years, appointed by President Bill Clinton. In 2008 Holzer was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President George W. Bush. He recently served as script consultant for Steven Spielberg’s 2012 film, Lincoln. Holzer is the author, co-author, or editor of more than 40 books on Lincoln and the Civil War era, most recently 1863: Lincoln’s Pivotal Year (2013), Lincoln: How Abraham Lincoln Ended Slavery in America (2012), the official young adult compan-

ion book for the Spielberg film, and The Civil War in 50 Objects, a volume that tells the story of the war through the collections of the New York Historical Society, for which he serves as the Roger Hertog Fellow. He has also written more than 500 articles, published 15 monographs, and contributed chapters and prefaces to 50 additional volumes. Holzer has won many awards for his writing including a second place Lincoln Prize and lifetime achievement awards from the Lincoln Groups of New York, the District of Columbia, and Detroit. In addition to his writing,

Holzer is much in demand as a speaker and lectures around the country. One of his programs, “Lincoln Seen and Heard,” with actor Sam Waterson, has been staged and broadcast from such venues as the White House, the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library, the William J. Clinton Presidential Library, the Library of Congress, and Ford’s Theatre. Holzer also appears frequently on C-SPAN and the History Channel, and has served as an on-air commentator on PBS, NBC, the BBC, and the National Geographic Network. SEE SCHOLAR ON PAGE 9
