Farmers Market second in national vote By Jack Bailey jackbailey@theputnamstandard.com
HURRICANE – The Putnam Farmers Market is currently in second place in the country in an online contest sponsored by the American Farmland Trust to identify America's Favorite Farmers Markets. As of Monday, Aug. 20, the Putnam Farmers Market was the second leading vote getter in the country in the small market category. The Botanical Gardens of the Ozarks Farmers Market in Fayetteville, Arkansas, was first in the small market category. The small market category is for markets with 15 or fewer vendors. Voting in the 2012 America's Favorite Farmers Markets contest began June 22 and will continue until midnight eastern time on Sept. 3.
The goal of American Farmland Trust’s fourth annual America’s Favorite Farmers Markets contest is to highlight the role that farmers markets play in keeping family farmers on the land. The summer long contest is a nationwide challenge to see which markets can rally the most votes from their customers. At the end of the contest, four winning markets—one small, one medium, one mid-size, and one large—will receive the title of America’s Favorite Farmers Market for 2012. The winning markets will be featured in the media and will be honored at local celebrations organized by American Farmland Trust. For more information about the America’s Favorite Farmers Markets contest or to vote, visit www.votemyfarmersmarket.org. Last year, the Putnam Farmers
Market was recognized in the America's Favorite Farmers Markets contest as the best in West Virginia, while finishing among the 20 top Farmers Markets in the country in the boutique category. The Putnam Farmer's Market is open this season on Tuesdays and Saturdays through the month of October. The Market hours this year are 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information visit the Market's website at www.putnamfarmersmarket.weebly.com. Marshall men’s women’s soccer teams to play games at Hurricane High By Jack Bailey jackbailey@theputnamstandard.com
HURRICANE – Both Marshall University’s men’s and women’s soccer teams will play home games at Hurricane High School this fall, while a new multi-million dollar soccer complex is built in Huntington. Marshall University’s men’s soccer team will split the hosting of its home matches between Hurricane High School and the Fields at Trace Fork in Charleston. In all, the men’s team will
play four home matches at Hurricane High School this fall. The men’s soccer games to be played in Hurricane are as follows: • Saturday, Oct. 13 vs. South Carolina at 7 p.m. • Wednesday, Oct. 17 vs. Kentucky at 7 p.m. • Tuesday, Oct. 23 vs. FIU at 7 p.m. • Saturday, Nov. 3 vs. UCF at 7 p.m. “It’s unfortunate we will have to play this season’s home games outside of Huntington on unfamiliar fields,” said men’s
head coach Bob Gray, “but we feel really good about the team we have returning this year and with the addition of some quality newcomers we have every reason to be excited about the season ahead.” Marshall’s women’s soccer team will play two home games at Hurricane High School this season, in addition to games at Huntington High School. Marshall’s women’s team will take on UTEP on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 1 p.m. at Hurricane High School, and will face SMU on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 1 p.m. at
Hurricane. The move to play games outside of Huntington this season came as the result of growth in Marshall’s athletic department. A new indoor practice facility and sports medicine facility are under construction on the site where the men’s and women’s soccer teams previously played. At the same time, a new $5.4 million soccer complex is under construction for the men’s and women’s soccer teams on the site of the old Veterans Memorial Fieldhouse in Huntington. The new soccer facility is ex-
pected to be completed in time for the 2013 fall soccer seasons. “Who are we to question what’s being done, when you consider what we’re going to get?” said Thundering Herd women’s soccer coach Kevin Long. “We have a new facility being built for us, and we should look around and see some of the challenges other sports have had here with places to play. We don’t dare for a second complain. It’s going to be state-of-the-art facility; it’s nothing but win-win on our end.”

Ginseng digging season begins Sept. 1 in West Virginia CHARLESTON – West Virginia’s ginseng digging season starts Sept. 1. Ginseng diggers, often called “sengers,” will be out in full force searching for the native herb that sold last year for an average of $410 per pound. On average, it takes about 300 roots to make a pound of ginseng. The price of ginseng per pound fluctuates based on demand and has been recorded to sell from as high as $700 per pound to as low as $200 per pound. In 2011, according to State Forester Randy Dye, ginseng generated approximately $2 million for West Virginia’s economy. “People, especially here in West Virginia and in Asian cultures, have believed for centuries in the health benefits of ginseng,
which makes the growing and digging of it economically important to the state’s economy and the harvesters’ wallets,” Dye said. Dye said that 4,920 pounds of ginseng were harvested during the 2011 season, which was a 12 percent decline from the previous season. Robin Black, who has worked with the Division of Forestry’s (DOF) ginseng program for more than 20 years, said she’s not worried about ginseng digging ever ceasing, though. “Ginseng digging is a timehonored tradition, usually passed down from generation to generation. I don’t believe it will ever fade away,” Black said. “In fact, in many areas of West Virginia, digging ginseng provides a second or third income for many families especially during tough eco-
nomic times. Ginseng digging is a great way for families to get out into the forest together, learn about the importance of sustaining a native species and make some extra money.” Ginseng plants are ready to harvest when their berries turn red. The plant is dug out of the ground and its roots removed. West Virginia state law requires anyone digging ginseng to replant the berries/seeds from the parent plant in the spot where it was harvested because this helps continue the species. Federal regulations set the minimum age a plant can be harvested at five years. The age of the plant is determined by the number of prongs; only plants with three or more prongs are considered old
enough to harvest. The following laws also apply to the harvesting of ginseng: •Anyone digging ginseng on someone else’s property must carry written permission from the landowner allowing him or her to harvest ginseng on the property. •No permit is needed to dig wild ginseng. •Digging ginseng on public lands, including state forests, wildlife management areas or state parks, is prohibited. •Diggers have until March 31 of each year to sell to a registered West Virginia ginseng dealer or have roots weight-receipted at one of the Division of Forestry weigh stations. •Possession of ginseng roots is prohibited from April 1 through Aug. 31 without a weight-receipt
from the DOF. •The ginseng digging season runs through Nov. 30. Beginning Sept. 1, a list of registered ginseng dealers for 20122013 will be available in the ginseng section of www.wvforestry.com. Besides growing naturally in the woods, ginseng also is cultivated, but roots from cultivated plants typically are worth less per pound than those that grow wild. People who want to grow ginseng on their own property must get a grower’s permit and have a determination done on their property before the ginseng is planted. Determinations are done from April 15 to June 15 each year. Contact Robin Black for more information or with questions at 304-558-2788 ext. 51764.
