WVSU Extension Service Preparing Gardeners for Spring Season INSTITUTE – Preparing gardeners for the spring season is the focus of a new series of workshops, hosted by West Virginia State University Extension Service, at the Kanawha County Public Library in Charleston. The series targets backyard gardeners, as well as groups looking to establish community, youth or adaptive gardens. “With the spring season right around the corner, now is the perfect time to consider planting a garden of your own or combining efforts with others to establish a community garden,” said Melissa Stewart, extension specialist for Agriculture & Natural Resources. “Community gardens are wonderful for uniting residents to work together toward achieving a common goal.” The courses will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on the following dates: · Site Selection and Preparation – Feb. 26 · Garden Design and Plant Spacing – March 12 · Plant Selection and Growing Techniques – March 26 · Raised Beds and Container Gardening – April 23 · Insect and Disease Management – April 30 SEE SPRING ON PAGE 7

PSC Transportation Enforcement Officer receives National Training Award Reggie Bunner, a Manager in the Public Service Commission Transportation Enforcement Division, was recently honored by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration‘s National Training Center as the Hazardous Materials Training Programs Instructor of the Year. This is the first year the award was given. The National Training Center (NTC) serves as the focal point for the development and delivery of motor carrier safety training to enhance the capabilities of participating Federal, State and Local government officials. Every year the NTC provides training to over 10,000 students nationwide. As this is the first year for this award, officials looked at the im-

the training materials, as well as the number of classes each in-
structor taught, and the number of times an instructor volunteered to teach. Over the last year, Bunner taught 14 Hazardous Materials classes for the NTC and volunteered almost twice as much as any other instructor. “The goal of the Transportation Enforcement Division is to save lives on West Virginia highways and our programs, which centers on training, are in motion to address this goal. Microsoft Access Workshops Kanawha Valley Community and Technical College will offer a series of Microsoft Access workshops designed for participants with little or no experience with computers or who want to increase their computer proficiency. Instruction will be provided by a Microsoft Office Master Instructor. In Microsoft Access 2010Basic, Participants will learn the basics needed to design a database. Participants will learn to create and edit tables, set field properties, use queries, and use basic forms and reports. Learn to store information and retrieve facts as needed. This workshop will be held Friday, March 8, 2013 In Microsoft Access 2010- Intermediate, students will learn the skills needed to build real world Microsoft Access databases with the features and capabilities
needed in today’s business climate. Participants will learn about designing tables, joining tables, and working with multiple tables through queries; how to create advanced, professionalquality forms and dialog boxes; create advanced reports with totals, subtotals, business charts, and more; use macros to automate business processes; and how to pull all the pieces of your database together into an easy-to-use, fully functional database application. This workshop will be held Friday, April 5, 2013. In Microsoft Access 2010- Advanced, students will learn the differences between Access 2007 and 2010, how to query with SQL; create crosstab, parameter, and action queries; create macros; import, export, and link database objects; work with macros, import, export, and link database ob-
jects; work with XML documents; work with Windows SharePoint Services; optimize databases; password-protect and encrypt databases; set Access options and properties; create hyperlink fields; and use Outlook to update data. This workshop will be held Friday, May 3, 2013. Workshops will be held at the Kanawha Valley Community & Technical College Workforce and Economic Development site located in the Schoenbaum Family Enrichment Center at 1701 Fifth Avenue, Suite 142, Charleston, WestVirginia. Each workshop begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 4:00 p.m. Pre-registration is required to assure adequate room. The registration fee is $95 for each sixhour, hands-on workshop and includes a student textbook and CD with practice activities. Register on-line
