2013 Farming Heritage Entries Sought Cosponsored by the State Fair of West Virginia and West Virginia Farm Bureau LEWISBURG,WV - Farming families are being sought as applicants forthe2013FarmingHeritageAward that is being offered by the State Fair ofWestVirginiaandtheWestVirginia Farm Bureau. The Farming Heritage award will be presented to a family that has strived to maintain its rural lifestyle by contributing to the community, acting as role models, dedicating timetoefficientagriculturalproduction, and maintaining the upkeep of their farm through generations. Thewinningfamilywillbetreated to an award ceremony during the State Fair on August 15, an award luncheon, overnight accommodations,freeadmission,preferredparking, and a Natural Stone Sign award with the family's name that may be displayed indoors or outdoors. A photo and brief biography of the winners will also be displayed in the Gus R. Douglass Annex during the Fair. Cadet Joseph Patrick Burgess graduates from Mountaineer ChalleNGe Academy introduced the commencement speaker. WV State Senator Erik Wells gave the commencement address. While attending the Academy, Cadet Burgess of Platoon 1 was recognized for receiving the Leadership Award, Instructor’s List (3 times), Honor’s List, Level I PT Award (3 times), 3-D Award (3 times), Mentorship Award, as well as obtaining the six Individual Values Recognition Ribbons. Cadet Burgess also participated in the Presidential Physical Fitness Program. During their time at the Academy, Cadet Burgess served in the following leadership positions: Platoon Leader (2 times).

KINGWOOD, WV - The Mountaineer ChalleNGe Academy is pleased to announce that Cadet Joseph Patrick Burgess, the son of Joe Burgess of Winfield and Anna Burgess of Franklin, TN, has completed the requirements for graduation. Cadet Burgess is one of 99 graduates from thirty-five (35) counties across the State of West Virginia. Class 2-12 is the thirty-ninth class to complete this West Virginia National Guard Program. WV Division of Culture and History and WV Commission to Present Free Creative Writing Skills Workshop March 2 CHARLESTON, WV – The West Virginia Division of Culture and History in collaboration with the West Virginia Library Commission will present an intensive creative writing skills workshop on Saturday, March 2, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., at the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The workshop is free and open to the public. The Writers’ Toolkit workshop will have two sessions of two-hour workshops: 10 a.m. - noon, and 2 4 p.m. Each session will feature two concurrent classes. The morning options include “Mapping Memoir: Family Life Placed inTime, History and Geography” with Cat Pleska; “Writing History – Your Own!” with Anna Smucker; ”Songwriting in the Folk Tradition” with Pete Kosky; and“What in theWorld is Geocaching?” with Robin Taylor. Pleska’s workshop will help writers find a way to write about their

late but essential family members from their past. Participants will learn how to explore their heritage and begin a family memoir. They are invited to bring family photos,

etchings, maps, diaries, letters, journals, official documents and other artifacts to use in writing their memoir. Smucker will use her book No

Star Nights as a model to teach students how to tap into their own life experiences through several fun writing excercises. Kosky’s session will focus on songwriting with an emphasis on the influence of traditional balladry and folk songs. He will discuss the use of the folk process to adapt traditional melodies and themes to original lyrics as well as the use of alternative guitar tunings. Taylor will discuss the rapidly growing phenomenon of geocaching. Geocaching is a free outdoor recreational treasure hunt in which players try to locate hidden containers using a mobile device or Global Positional System (GPS) receiver to hide and seek containers.
