TEAYS VALLEY - The wail of a Gibson guitar sails over the hills of Rocky Step. Atop a hillside, four men gather with instruments in hand and passion in heart. "One...two...three...four," chants drummer Alan Handley. The sound that comes next is The Doors' "Roadhouse Blues" meets Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Double Trouble," while shaking the hands of Derek and the Dominoes' "Bellbottom Blues" and giving Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way" a head nod. It's the blues, baby. And Tim Coll, Scott Rogan, Jim Spence and Alan Handley do it well. The four join up as Chaz Humley and the Effects, a local band that has made a big name for itself during the past few years.

Masters of their craft - Jim Spence, Alan Handley, Scott Rogan and Tim Coll are Chaz Humley and the Effects. The local blues band has won several competitions with its original hits. The guys will rock Live on the Levee Aug. 16 and will release a CD this Fall. Photo by Justin Waybright When they play, an unmatched musical connection is birthed. During a recent Sunday afternoon jam session, Spence let

loose and his bass came to life. Coll and Rogan’s guitars invaded the atmosphere with raw, bluesy riffs.

Spence belted out raspy, rhythmic rhetoric while Coll touched blues majesty with his harmonica. Handley's beat acted as the glue that bonded it all together. It's all about reaching that perfect moment during a song where all instruments speak to each other and musical fusion takes over, the drummer said. "Everything has a groove, and we work that out," he said. Spence, the band's vocalist and bassist agreed. "I listen to Al a lot - any good bass player listens to their drummer," he explained. "My job is to lay down the best groove I can." During the jam session, the two men fed off each other. It was as if Spence's Fender Precision Bass was having a conversation with Handley's Yamaha Drum kit. BLUES ON PAGE 9

Serendipity Creates Recipe for Success By Justin Waybright justin@theputnamstandard.com

HURRICANE - It's not by luck that Serendipity Cupcake Boutique is thriving. The local business is a magnet, drawing in sell-out crowds and a large following through social media. During its grand opening, last week, a line of anxious customers stretched out the door. Cupcakes flew off the shop's shelves. "There's not a day that we haven't sold out," said owner Cristin Massey. "There's just nothing like this around here." Heather King agreed. "We have a variety of flavors

King and Massey have been friends for years. Recently, the

two took their love of desserts and drive for success to a whole new level when they acquired Serendipity a couple months ago from its previous owner. "She just did cupcakes - we're moving it into cupcakes, cookies, ice cream and a bakery," said Massey. "We're learning as we go." Countless hours dominate the two culinary artists' schedules every week. Constant orders, catering requests and custom cupcake experimenting fill Massey and King's days. What drives the two ladies to work as hard as they do? The answer is simple: people. SEE SERENDIPITY ON PAGE 9
