Redskins Fall to Cougars By Justin Waybright justin@theputnamstandard.com

CHARLESTON-- Since October, No. 14 Hurricane has fought an uphill battle, bringing in a 6-4 season. That battle culminated in a 38-10 loss to No. 3 Capital during the first round of the playoffs at Laidley Field Friday night. The Redskins' post season appearance against the Cougars echoed the rollercoaster season the team has endured. "We've beaten all the teams we should've beaten this season, and sometimes we even had a little luck, but the bigger teams have beaten us," said Coach Jeremy Taylor. Such was the case Friday night. As the November rain fell, so did the Redskins' chance at post season glory. However, the boys in red and white started off strong. The staSEE REDSKINS ON PAGE 13

Students Harvest Plants and Knowledge By Justin Waybright justin@theputnamstandard.com

ELEANOR - Learning in its purest form is growing, literally, at George Washington Elementary School. Cabbage, radishes, lettuce, carrots and a multitude of other vegetables are pushing through soil and producing a crop that often fills the lunch trays for the students who grew them and their classmates. School officials teamed up with members of the West Virginia University Agriculture and Natural Resources Department and the Master Gardeners volunteers for Putnam County to help plant seeds and knowledge about growing and caring into the minds of children. Students of all ages water the vegetables daily. Recently, the students harvested some of the vegetables they planted in September. The day was made possible after the school received a $12,000 grant from the USDA, secured by the WVU Putnam County Extension office.
