Officer recommendation forms are available online and in the literature racks in the church. If you have questions about how this all fits together, ask. Who? Well, an officer, of course.
You’ve seen the lights in the rearview mirror. In an instant, the question has formed in your mind and just as quickly been answered. “For me? Really!?” The documents are retrieved from the glove box, the pulse quickens, the window goes down, and you mumble with your most compliant monotone, “Good morning, officer.”

Or maybe you’ve been hired. It’s the company of your dreams with the salary of your dad’s dreams, and today is the day. The imposing glass door is decidedly uninviting, and the giant sign almost warns you away. But it’s a requirement. So you muster your feigned confidence and step in for your obligatory meeting with the chief executive officer.
Officer Recommendations March 1-April 10
Now, what picture forms in your mind when you hear or read of an officer of the church? Does that carry the same gravitas as an officer of the law, or the company, or the court? And how does somebody get that position? And what do they do anyway, these church officers?
The Session has approved March1-April 10, for members to submit recommendations for the offices of deacon and elder. A screening committee led by Ruling Elder Randy Wood and composed of elders, deacons, and laity will interview all men who are recommended and consider their qualifications before submitting a list of potential officer candidates to the Session for approval. The men approved by the Session will undergo a year of training in classes on the Bible, The Westminster Confession of Faith (Ground School), The Book of Church Order, and officer-specific books then stand for election by the congregation in early June, 2016.
Simply put, church officers are the elders and deacons. The scriptures teach that elders and deacons are called by God to serve the Church in particular ways. As under-shepherds, the elders have responsibility for church government and spiritual oversight. The deacons’ role is one of ministering to the physical and spiritual needs of the people of the church. Neither the deacons nor the elders are to view their roles as positions of power or prestige, but as callings to humbly love and care for the Church whose head is Christ alone.
Please reflect on the following verses regarding leadership as you consider your recommendations: 1 Timothy 3:1-13, Titus 1:5-9, and 1 Peter 5:1-4.
This matter of calling is worth some thought. Calling means two things, or more rightly, one thing with two distinct parts. Inward calling is that urging in the Spiritsensitive heart that God has placed His hand upon you and has directed you to specific tasks. Outward calling is the affirmation from others that your life is one of Kingdom fruitfulness. For those men who consider serving as elders or deacons, both an inward and outward calling are needed—meaning the decision to serve is bathed in prayer, guided by the Session, and communicated to the congregation with transparency. So what does all of that have to do with you? Well, it’s the time of year when PCPC takes recommendations for its officers. The congregation, you, are tasked with prayerfully considering who should lead. You have the privilege and the responsibility to select the elders and deacons of our church. In recommending men for office, you are affirming your belief that those men are called. Your recommendation is a part of their outward calling.
Qualifications of an Elder (BCO 8-2, 3): He that fills this office should possess a competency of human learning and be blameless in life, sound in the faith, and apt to teach. He should exhibit a sobriety and holiness of life becoming the Gospel. He should rule his own house well and should have a good report of them that are outside the church. (The elder is) to watch diligently over the flock, that no corruption of doctrine or of morals enter therein. Qualifications of a Deacon (BCO 9-2, 3): It is the duty of deacons to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress. To the office of deacon, which is spiritual in nature, shall be chosen men of spiritual character, honest repute, exemplary lives, brotherly spirit, warm sympathies, and sound judgment. Below are brief guidelines for you and those you recommend: • Y ou must be a member in good standing of PCPC in order to recommend an individual for an officer position. • Please seek permission before submitting someone’s name as a candidate. • You may recommend men who have previously served as deacon or elder. • A t the time of recommendation, an officer candidate must have been a member in good standing of PCPC for the past two years. • Please do not recommend a man who is related to you by blood or marriage.
Then what happens? The recommendations are prayed about, prayed for, and affirmed by the Session, the elders. Only then are the men told that they’ve been nominated for church office. If they prayerfully sense the Lord’s calling, they begin a year-long period of training. They study Scripture, the Westminster Confession of Faith, church discipline, and other matters of ministry. Finally, after passing a written exam, they are presented to the congregation for a vote. That’s right. The congregation, you, vote for these men to serve. The very practical implication of this process is that you, as a member of Park Cities Presbyterian Church, have taken a vow to “submit yourself to the government and discipline of the church,” and you are central in affirming which men guide and guard that government and discipline. Recommending and selecting officers is a big deal. Read Titus 1 and 1 Timothy 3. Then pray about who you would recommend, about who you believe models biblical leadership.
