EVERYONE DR. IRWYN INCE: PCA GA MODERATOR AND GUEST PREACHER

Rev. Dr. Irwyn Ince serves as pastor and director of the Grace DC Institute for Cross-Cultural Mission. Dr. Ince is a graduate of City College of NY (B.E.E.E, 1995), Reformed Theological Seminary (M.A.R., 2006), and Covenant Theological Seminary (D.Min., 2016). He was the first African-American elected to be Moderator by the 46th PCA General Assembly in 2018.

In January 2006, after an eleven-year career with Motorola as a systems engineer and project engineering manager, he began full time ministry at Mount Zion Covenant Church in Bowie, MD. In January 2007 Mount Zion merged with New Town Church in Columbia to plant City of Hope Presbyterian Church, where he served as Senior Pastor from 2007-2017.

He and his wife, Kim, have been married 27 years, and have four children (Jelani, Nabil, Zakiya, and Jeremiah). In addition to his passion for his family and for ministry, he is passionate about coffee and CrossFit. He has contributed to the books Heal Us Emmanuel: A Call for Racial Reconciliation, Representation, and Unity in the Church, and All Are Welcome: Toward a Multi-Everything Church.

Aloneness wi t h Him

I am so grateful I had the privilege to take a sabbatical from my ministry role here at Park Cities Presbyterian Church. God’s direction seemed very clear as I made plans last fall to take a time away to rest and restore my soul while focused on the topic, “Loneliness in Leadership”. I left my little office the week before Christmas and didn’t return until March 18. I was a little frightened of being away from my church, my friends, and my role at PCPC for such a long time.

My first month was restful, learning about Sabbath rest, how to “be” and not “do” as was my habit. The Lord brought up a new theme from His Word and the books I was reading each week, but the key verses that continued to come up in my studies were Matthew 11:28-30: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

I was learning as the days progressed, that in my quietness, when I started feeling lonely, God wanted me to submit to His assignments for me and to humbly listen and learn the lessons He was gently teaching me.

I began exploring my topic of loneliness in leadership by taking a trip to Nashville with Kathy Smith to visit our mutual friend Nancy Guthrie. Both women have experienced unimaginable grief and loss. Knowing that grief is a unique type of loneliness, I sought Nancy’s wisdom on what she has learned by carrying grief in her heart as she teaches women all over the world. Nancy taught us that grief deepens her dive into scripture and makes it so tangible because she needs it every day. That type of loneliness makes her relate to the hurts of others more and deepens her compassion for others. And it gives her a greater clarity on the gospel and the enormous difference it makes in the pain.

In the middle of my sabbatical, the Lord led me into a deep experience of my own aloneness with Him. My mother has congestive heart failure, and her health really declined in February. She is thankfully much better now, but at that time, it was a scary. She didn’t have the strength to walk to her mail box. Her voice weakened with every phone call. You see, she is my “person”, the one I talk to daily. As a single woman without my own family, the reality of my deep aloneness loomed heavy. Facing the truth that one day she will not be here with me, but she’ll be home with Jesus was necessary and painful. I was sad and afraid. I prayed that God would take away my fears and He did so very gently. He led me to so much comfort.

My favorite book I read on the topic of “Loneliness” was The Path of Loneliness by Elisabeth Elliot. She shares in the book that we deal with our loneliness by being weak and then taking that weakness to Jesus.

It’s there that we abide and depend on Him. She suggests turning our loneliness into solitude and our solitude into prayer, knowing the truth is, we are never alone.

And no one knew loneliness like our Savior, Jesus Christ to the extent that He cried out on the Cross, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” And by that sacrifice for me, I can know He will meet me in every lonely hour and circumstance, showing me more and more through the years, how very near and present He is. He will use the pain of loneliness to refine me and make me look more like Him. And He will use the experiences of loneliness to be food for others traveling similar paths.
