SUMMER PRAYER GUIDE

FALL SILENT RETREATS

Jesus modeled for us the importance of retreating in order to be alone with the Father. The Psalms give us examples of prayers offered while men were alone, seeking the face of God. Sign ups are available for Fall 2019 Silent Retreats to Sky Ranch in Ute Trail, CO. Space is limited, so sign up early to experience quiet and stillness with the Lord. Find more information and registrations at pcpc.org/silent-retreats/. Couples: September 19-23 | Women: September 26-30 caroleanne.axley@pcpc.org or 214-417-6043

Viva la Florida I grew up going to PCPC as a student and now have the privilege to work for the church that so shaped my walk with the Lord. Going back on the Florida Trip as a leader, I could see my insecure, anxious, high-school self in the faces of all of the students on the trip. As a student I remember the pressure I felt to act a certain way, wear the cutest tankini, be the most-tan by the end of the week, and, most importantly, to never ever be seen doing anything alone. The sad thing is that the harder you strive for false gods the more miserable and lost you become. This trip reminded me of the chains that enslaved me before the Lord showed me my real identity as His beloved daughter. I was trying to find my identity and self-worth in the things of this world and this mindset was no different than that of the students on this year’s trip.

Luckily the story doesn’t end here; amidst the darkness I saw a great light. I was so encouraged by the curiosity of the girls in my cabin and the stories I heard from other leaders. “The thief comes to steal, to kill and to destroy but I have come that they may have life and have it to the full” —John 10:10. What a great hope we have in a Savior that desires to give His children abundant life, a life to the full! I got the privilege to see this Savior at work, slowly drawing His children near to Himself. I too was a lost and confused student on the Florida Trip, and it was there that the Lord started to slowly open my eyes. What’s amazing is that the real trip has only begun. I ask you to pray for the salvation of the students that went on the Florida Trip because God is not finished! — Hailey Scott, PCPC Youth Resident Seven years ago, I boarded the busses for my first Florida Trip as a rising sophomore in high school. Boy, am I glad I got on that bus! My three years as a student on the Florida Trip were the best three weeks of my high school life. I met one of my best friends and my roommate, I got a great tan to start off my summer, and I was able to expand my relationship with the Lord immensely. My days were started with seminars that interested me and devotionals that pushed me to explore my faith. The afternoons were filled with volleyball and backflips on the beach. My nights were ones of worship and learning. I was introduced to new people, new revelations about what it means to grow as a Christian, and an insight into what it looked like to really follow the Lord. My leaders and the friends I made on the trip became the people that I leaned on through the hardships that I faced while in high school. Laguna Beach Christian Retreat Center and the 78 entrance to the sand became my safe place. I truly loved the Lord on those trips without distraction. On my last Florida Trip, summer of 2014, I chose to dedicate myself and my life to following Christ. I had done it previously in order to please my parents, but that year I chose to follow Him for me. It was the best decision of my life. Fast forward seven years and I am serving on my fourth Florida trip as a leader and my first as a member of the PCPC staff. While I would like to say I learned the most as a student, being a leader has been the most eye-opening experience of my life. I have developed relationships with young girls that ultimately led me to pursue a career in ministry. Getting to lead and guide students on their walks with Christ—I can really just say, “Wow.” It is such a blessing. This year was even more special, as my little sister went on her first Florida Trip. She was introduced to the same things I was seven years ago, and it is such a blessing to get to say Viva la Florida for another year.
