COUNSELING & CARE TACKLING FEAR & WORRY

Do you struggle with fear and worry, or have a friend or family member who does? The Counseling and Care ministry at PCPC will be addressing these issues by offering a twelve-week class this fall. The class will walk through Ed Welch’s book, Running Scared - Fear, Worry, and the God of Rest. This book was taught this summer in a six-week format. The response was so positive that it was decided to offer it again on Mondays, September 16–December 2, 7:00 – 8:45 p.m. Join in on this great opportunity to tackle two great robbers of our freedom and joy, and let's tackle them together. A couple of years ago, a crew of awesome helpers, led by PCPC Deacon Kyle Manley, came to my home to help with repairs. My home was in need of a little bit of everything, inside and out.

The front hedge needed to be trimmed, the windows washed, boards on my fence replaced with new ones, limbs cut back on a fig tree between my house and a neighbor’s house, as well as some rotten limbs in other trees. My stopper for the bathroom sink needed to be replaced, and I asked for a long shelf to be installed over closet door. It was quite the list, but the Helping Hands crew served me so well in all of it.

And in serving me, they saw my neighbor, Billy, whose yard needed mowing. Jonathan Harper had a conversation with him after first taking care of his front yard. A week or so later, Jonathan and his two sons came back to take care of his backyard where the grass had grown exceedingly high. Not only that, he brought two trees to plant in his backyard. The motto for the Helping Hands ministry at PCPC should be, “Beyond Ourselves.” Without question, they have supported and helped me with home repairs and projects over the years as well as many others. They have gone beyond themselves to help those in need. They have extended their kindness and the love of Jesus to neighborhoods around the city. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of a church who cares for its own and others? Just as the Apostle Paul heard the clarion call to the Macedonians, “Come over here and help us,” so too the Helping Hands ministry is responding to needs beyond the church.

Wednesday, August 21 | 7:30–8:15 a.m. | Hillcrest Chick-fil-a Two of my sons, Luke and Brooks, and I had the opportunity to join a group of church members during Helping Hands to serve at Annie Roberson’s home. It was a great joy to watch my boys, then 11 and 9 years old, work and interact with Carl Koenig and other older members of the church. During the time of service, an opportunity arose to establish ongoing acts of service.

Annie’s next-door neighbor asked for help during the work time. He had just undergone knee replacement surgery and was struggling to handle daily tasks around the house. My boys asked me, "How would he mow his yard? Could we help?" The Holy Spirit was leading my boys with the desire to serve. In short, we had the opportunity to care for Annie’s yard and her neighbor’s yard while he recuperated from his surgery. My boys developed a sweet, new relationship with Annie and Carl (fellow PCPC members), but also members of the West Dallas community. This was a simple reminder of the freshness and beauty of godly fellowship.
