INTERNATIONAL STUDENT THANKSGIVING DINNER I have spent the good majority of life living in fear. I've been quite intimate with depression, an eating disorder, loneliness, seeking approval of others, anxiety, and all of its close friends. I so badly wanted to escape from feeling rejected, unwanted, and unneeded that I spent 98% of my life manipulating, performing, avoiding situations, or starving myself to feel in control. When I heard the Summer Series covered a book by Ed Welch called Running Scared: Fear, Worry, and the God of Rest, I knew this was a class I needed to attend. The first class, Pat Hobin, said, "We are not in control of our lives." I honestly didn't understand and believed I was the one holding life together. I learned (and am still learning) the way to combat love is with love. My desire to control had to be replaced with a greater love, a love for the Lord. I now see He IS enough. In the book, Ed says, "Your future includes manna. It will come. There is no sense devising future scenarios now because God will do more than you anticipate." And when manna doesn't come right when I want it, this doesn't mean I am doing something wrong. It means that I don't have the right glasses to see the broader perspective of a loving Father. I see more and more glimpses of joy and rest in my life, and it is good. My prayer for anyone that has felt worry or anxiety is this, "God, open my ears. I don't clearly hear Your care and compassion when You tell me not to worry or be afraid, but I know they are there. Father, open my eyes. I act like I see all reality. I act like I can see even more than You do. But I see now that there is an entire world that is blurry to me, and that world is You. It is You I don't see well. I want to trust in what You say and see the things You have revealed. That leaves me no choice but to start with humility. This is the way all journeys with You begin. Please teach me humility so that what You say overrules what I feel (Welch)". Come hear more at the Fear, Worry, and the God of Rest Conference with author Ed Welch on October 25-26.
Come help us introduce international students from SMU to an American-style Thanksgiving dinner and build new friendships on Friday, November 22, 6:00 p.m., PCPC Fellowship Hall. We’ll have fun, fellowship, and line dancing. Sign up to bring food at pcpc.org/events. We need people to bring turkey, sides, bread, and dessert. sarah.morrison@pcpc.org or 214-224-2524
