Budget Variance

In the early spring of 2018, I had begun to sense a prodding in my heart to share the gospel with those who would not otherwise hear it. At that time, I wasn’t sure how I was going to do that. But by that fall, I was sharing with students from India, China, Denmark, Korea, and Iraq - and I never went more than five miles from my house! One Friday night last fall, my husband, Scott, and I attended a Reformed University Fellowship-International (RUF-I) welcome party spur-of-themoment just because it sounded like fun. We had such a great time getting to know some very bright young adults! They were from very interesting places, and they were all SMU students studying interesting things. It was easy to be interested in them, but to my great surprise, they were interested in us - late middle age empty nesters from the United States! We became table hosts for the Tuesday night Global Café at SMU. Again, I was surprised that many of these students, who were well traveled and so very smart, knew absolutely nothing about Christianity, Jesus Christ, or the Bible. The very first evening, I was asked, “What is a testament? I keep hearing that word.” What a great opening and a great discussion that followed! As the year progressed, we began to form friendships with the students. Two students joined our family for our traditional American Thanksgiving. It was really a joy for me to look around our table and see new faces “from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages.” In the spring of 2019, I began helping with ESL classes at For the Nations (FTN). I had been somewhat familiar with the children’s programs at FTN, which are excellent. But again, the prodding I had felt a year earlier led me to want to work with adults. I feel like I have learned so much from this experience! I have learned what refugees are and why they are in Dallas. I have learned that in general, Muslim women are very warm toward me, an American woman. I thought they might regard me as immodest since I wear jeans and don’t cover my head, but they don’t seem to mind. Together we have heard the gospel of Jesus skillfully taught in simple English from both the Old and New Testaments each week. Certainly, the Lord is at work through PCPC's involvement with Reformed University Fellowship-International and For The Nations. He has brought the world to our doorstep, right here in Dallas! To find out how you too can EXTEND the gospel, please contact Sarah Morrison at sarah.morrison@pcpc.org.
