What does it mean to have victory? To be a winner? Does it mean being the fastest, smartest, or most popular? On June 8-11, PCPC welcomed 355 “players” to Vacation Bible School’s Home Run Derby to discover what it really means to be victorious. These “All-Stars” learned that eternal life with Jesus is the only true victory!
Home Run Derby centered on 1 Corinthians 15:57, “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Utilizing the visual metaphor of a baseball diamond, we learned that the path to this victory. We learned that God comes FIRST and deserves all the glory. Next, we learned that we steal God’s glory and place Him SECOND in our lives, but that Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice by dying on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. We learned that after He died on the cross, Jesus rose again on the THIRD day. The final day of VBS brought us HOME. Pointing to Christ’s ascension in Acts 1:1-11, we learned that we have hope in heaven with Jesus. The VBS leadership team was an impressive squad of 150 adult and 90 youth volunteers. The church opened its doors to nearly 600 people every day—a wonderful inaugural VBS in our beautiful new space. During craft time, each All-Star created a baseball jersey, a team pennant, and a trading card. Our hope is that these keepsakes will serve as reminders that we put on Christ’s righteousness just like a team jersey. Music time provided an opportunity for worship and fun. Through song, our children were reminded every day of the “V-I-C-T-O-R-Y” they have in Jesus. Our students also became friends with Home Run Derby veterans Big Red and Skittles, played by Zach Baker and Emma Darley. Every morning, Big Red and Skittles recapped daily lessons and Scriptures, presented a fun daily video, and guided the rookies toward Jesus. The Missions team wowed our All-Stars as they taught them how to “pitch the gospel” and introduced them to various PCPC Missionaries. Through a series of awesome Sports Desk interviews, the children heard about Global Missions, shortterm missions, and serving exactly where they are through City Missions. The players heard an extra special message from friends at Mercy Street about the work they are doing in West Dallas. All VBS participants had an opportunity to participate in the missions project by making donations—including gifts of baseball equipment—for Mercy Street Sports. By the grace of God, our week at the Home Run Derby was…..well, a Home Run! We praise God for the children in attendance and for the MANY wonderful and gifted volunteers. Please continue to pray that the children fondly recall this very special week. Above all, we pray that all who visited the Home Run Derby—both young and not-so-young—will remember that true Victory comes only through our Lord Jesus Christ. Go ahead and save the date for 2022 VBS next June 7-10! – Heather Squibb
