"Victors we’re ordained to be By the God who set us free. What can therefore conquer me? Nothing. Hallelujah!” —James Boice

2

What in the “world” is PCPC up to? Do you know 1) how many missionaries PCPC supports? 2) where they serve? 3) what ministries are bringing the hope of Jesus Christ to those who have no hope? Join us on Sunday, October 3, 8:30‑9:15 am, in the Parlor to lift the needs of our 52 missionaries (that’s right—46 couples/families and 6 individuals!) to our Heavenly Father and find out more about what God is doing in and through them. Fresh requests from the field and guidelines will help inform our prayers. First-timers are especially welcome! Contact Renatta Rasmussen, 214224-2551 orworldmissions@pcpc.org.

He will be studying in the U.K. from this October to July, 2011, and during this time our director of music and organist, Colin Howland, will assume responsibility for the Chancel Choir's leadership and for music for weddings. Colin will partner with PCPC and local musicians for conducting and organ-playing responsibilities. J. Marty, we will be praying for you as you pursue this exciting opportunity, and we look forward to your return next summer!

Women’s Reflective Retreat

October 22-23 Montserrat, Lake Dallas Women's ministries

Reflective Retreat

“God’s servants must be taught the value of the hidden life.” F.B. Meyer

At least once a year each of us should have some sort of extended retreat in times of solitude and fellowship with other believers in Christ. The women’s reflective retreat will give you just such an opportunity to have 24 hours of refreshment at nearby Montserrat Retreat Center on Lake Dallas. Two sessions of teaching on the spiritual discipline of worship will be led by Elizabeth Robinson and Kari Stainback. Fellowship at meals, combined with quiet in between the sessions, makes for quality time to unplug from the busy world of work, activities, noise, and technology, and gives you time to quietly read your Bible, pray and rest. Join us and come to the quiet October 22-23. Cost is $100. Register at www.pcpcwomen.org or at the Women’s Ministry table. Contact ann.higginbottom@pcpc.org or 214-224-2725.

Pray First

Join us as we pray for our church, families, state, and world on October 4, 12:00–12:30 pm, Parlor. We would love to pray with and for you. For more information or to submit prayer requests, contact Carri Case, kcases@swbell.net or 214-363-0558.

The Bridge: Save the date!

Come have a casual dinner and build relationships with other women in different walks of life. You will also enjoy hearing a seasoned woman’s story of rescue on Thursday, October 21, 6:30–8:30 pm. No RSVP is needed, and dinner is provided for a small fee. We will meet at Susan Bullock’s home, 3620 Bryn Mawr. Contact ann.higginbottom@ pcpc.org or 214-224-2725.

Men's Weekly Prayer Breakfast

Georgia Settle, wife of PCA minister Paul Settle, died September 19, 2010, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Paul wrote to his friends the next morning: “Georgia was received by Jesus Christ into His immediate presence on the Lord's Day evening, September 19, at 8:30 o'clock. I was with her, and the children and grandchildren and other family members had been with her off and on for several days. Please keep praying for us. ‘To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. AMEN!" Georgia Brown, from Betsy Lane, Kentucky, met Paul Settle while they were students at Bob Jones University in the mid1950s. They married shortly after their graduation in 1956. From then on her story was a shared story of ministry with Paul. Following seminary they served several churches in the Southeast and established their family with two children as well, Paul David and Jo Lynn (Sprouse). Georgia also taught speech education in several public schools during these years. By 1971 it was evident that a new denomination was forming —the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). Paul and Georgia moved to Montgomery, AL, where Paul took on several leadership roles to establish the new denomination and Georgia was instrumental in founding the PCA's women’s ministry. She was the first to fill the position that is now known as Director of Women’s Ministry. In 1976, Paul was called to be senior pastor of Second Presbyterian Church in Greenville, and he served there for over 14 years. During that period, Georgia became the historian of the PCA and wrote her first book, Women in the Bible. A second book followed, Seasons of Change, Seasons of Grace. Following two years of service at Ridge Haven (1991-1993), Paul and Georgia moved on to Paul’s next and final call, to PCPC as an associate pastor with his primary work being Christian education. Georgia also worked on the PCPC staff as a receptionist. In 2003, when Georgia began the "long goodbye" of Alzheimer’s, Paul stepped down from the staff at PCPC and spent most of his time caring for her. A few years later, they moved to Brevard, NC, to be closer to family. A woman who followed Georgia in the PCA Women’s Ministry leadership recently wrote about her: Georgia Settle is not a settler... she is a pilgrim whose progress has encouraged and inspired countless daughters of the covenant. She embodies the helper design. She is a life-giver. She represents the scores of women who have given the legacy to us... I once heard her describe herself as the happy wife of a happy pastor... Her constant passion for God's glory and love for His church often steadied me, though she was unaware that I was watching... She journeys from strength to strength. Her gentle presence comforts troubled hearts and encourages weary warriors. She is so empty of self and so filled with Jesus. —Susan Hunt In an e-mail to friends following Georgia's recent move to a nursing home, which Paul resisted for many years, he wrote: I turned to find an empty pillow beside me. The sense of loss almost undid me, but in the same moment, through the window the first rays of a rising sun darted across the pillow. I turned to see a lovely sunrise, and on impulse, sat up and opened my Bible to Habakkuk’s beautiful prayer contained in chapter 3. My eye fell immediately on verse 3, and the glory of the rising sun was transformed into worship of the Risen Son in a most marvelous way. "God came . . . the Holy One. His splendor covered the heavens, and the earth was full of His praise." My heart was full. I thought of the tender kindness of the sovereign God who powerfully meets our needs and hears the cries of a sinner like myself. The brilliance of that text seemed to fill the bedroom! Indeed, the heavens—every sunrise—declares the glory of God until that Day when He who came shall come again and the light of the sun will be replaced by the Light of the Lord God. I turned to verses 18-19: “I will rejoice in the LORD. I will take joy in the God of my salvation. God, the Lord, is my strength."

with Mark Davis and Pete Deison continues every Tuesday 6:30–7:30 am Fellowship Hall

We at PCPC are so blessed to have known the Settles' ministry among us. (Edited excerpts from an article at theaquilareport.com written by Don K. Clements)
