SEASON PREVIEW
tradition endures
By Todd Jorgenson People Newspapers
The motto was made famous by Notre Dame and numerous other schools, but “Tradition Never Graduates” certainly fits at Highland Park. The numbers back up the claim, as the Scots are easily the top program in Texas in terms of overall wins (787) and playoff wins (91). HP hasn’t missed the playoffs or experienced a losing season in almost 30 years. Since current head coach Randy Allen took over in 1999, the Scots haven’t lost more than one regular-season game in any campaign. Last year’s district championship was the 50th in school history. And not since 1995 has HP won fewer than nine games. They have racked up amazing streaks at home and in district play. Those are numbers that would impress even the Scots teams from the early 1940s, when Bobby Layne and Doak Walker shared the field. The physical adherence to tradition is apparent in the lack of logo on the helmets or an inflatable tunnel to run through – old-fashioned omissions that might seem outdated in other communities. Sure, the style of play has changed with the times – the school’s state-title team in 1945 allowed just 52 points all season, while the 2005 championship squad scored an incredible 722 points – but sustaining a tradition over almost a century of football is about more than margins of victory or bells and whistles. Just ask the players who are charged with continuing that tradition. Every year, for example, Allen shares a sheet of paper with his new team captains, showing all those that have come before.

“Looking at all the names, it was pretty impressive,” said HP quarterback Michael Clarke, one of four captains this season. “All those great players, and now we’re part of that list.”
Clarke and his fellow captains – defensive standouts Bennett Brock, Matt Gahm, and John House – know the significance of the honor in a program that is ingrained with hopeful youngsters throughout the Park Cities. Becoming a varsity starter requires skill and patience, since HP still plays almost all of its sophomores and some of its juniors at the JV level in deference to more experienced seniors. Of course, being designated as a captain comes with added responsibilities, both on and off the field. “Everybody knows your name in the community,” Brock said. “You have to hold yourself to a
higher standard.” This season, the Scots will drop back down to Class 5A after spending the past two seasons in the state’s highest enrollment classification. Both of those years ended with nine regular-season wins, but a second-round playoff exit. This year, the Scots will begin a two-year cycle in District 15-5A alongside Forney, Lovejoy, Mesquite Poteet, North Forney, Royse City, West Mesquite, and Wylie East. “We’re a tougher, more mentally prepared football team having played two years at 6A. We’ve seen some really good competition,” Allen said. “We’re excited
about being in 5A, although it will be tough. We think we’re on more of a level playing field with these teams.” The last time HP wasn’t in 6A, it reached the Class 4A state semifinals in 2013. That’s more of what this year’s captains, who were freshmen then, have in mind. They want to assure that while they will graduate in the spring, tradition won’t. After all, perhaps more than anything, becoming a part of tradition sometimes requires sacrificing individual achievements for team goals. “The past two years has taught us the preparation that goes into a long season,” House

Coach Confident in New Starters While the turnover is characteristically significant among the starting backfield and receivers for Highland Park this season, the Scots don’t expect to drop off from a unit that averaged almost 35 points per game last season. After all, Jack Kozmetsky will inherit the starting spot at running back after accumulating 227 yards and five touchdowns in a reserve role last season. And returning receiver J.T. Dooley was third on last year’s squad with 275 receiving yards and three scores. Jack Toohey caught a touchdown pass early last year before missing most of the season with an injury, and Paxton Alexander also is back. Who will throw the ball to them? Michael Clarke is the leading candidate after filling the backup role at the varsity level a year ago. But heading into fall practice, head coach Randy Allen said Jack Fain and John Stephen Jones also will battle for the starting job. While the Scots will lack experience at many of the skill positions, however, that’s not the case along the offensive line, where HP returns four starters. “We’re going to be improved in that area because of that one year of experience,” Allen said. “It should make

Defense to Rely on Experience Highland Park is ready to reap the benefits from last year’s struggles on defense. The Scots allowed almost 30 points per game last season, which is understandable when you consider how injuries forced several underclassmen into key roles. A year later, however, that varsity baptism under fire gives HP one of the most experienced returning units in the Dallas area, especially among its front seven. “A lot of us who played last year kind of got thrown into the fire,” said linebacker Matt Gahm. “We bonded on the move. That was a good experience to go through together.” That’s especially true among the speedy corps of playmaking linebackers, which will include Gahm, Marshall Ballard, John House, and Bennett Brock in the Scots’ traditional 3-4 scheme. They will be complemented up front by the trio of Luke Blanton, Marshall Hammack, and nose guard Turner Coxe. “I don’t know if we’ve had as good of depth as we’re going to have this year,” Allen said. “Where that helps you is when you play an up-tempo team that can wear you down.” HP will be tested in that regard early in the season with games against high-

The Scots don’t have nearly as much experience in the secondary, which means the linemen must stop the run and the linebackers will need to help in coverage and apply pressure to opposing quarterbacks. Still, Allen is confident in HP’s athletic group of defensive backs. “Our guys can run and cover,” he said. “We just need some experience out on the field.”
