SEASON PREVIEW

SCOTS FIND STRENGTH IN NUMBERS HP captains place priority on weights By Todd Jorgenson

People Newspapers There were days during the summer when Jack Sides would have rather been home relaxing than making the trek to Highland Park High School to lift weights and run conditioning drills. But he knew that if he didn’t show up for regular sessions with his teammates, his phone would be buzzing in a hurry. “I knew if I took a day off and didn’t have a good excuse, I was going to hear from about 40 different people,” said Sides, a returning starter at offensive tackle. Such was the level of accountability that Sides and his fellow team captains established this summer with regard to Performance Course, the summer program conducted annually at HP by veteran strength coach Geno Pierce. The seven-week course met four days per week, for two hours each day. The average attendance at HP this summer was about 70 athletes, which is a big increase from past years. Eight players attended all 28 sessions. “We feel like we’ve gotten stronger,” said HP head coach Randy Allen. “They had a great attitude. They got bigger and stronger, and that will make us better.” In reality, the Scots couldn’t have asked for much better from their debut season in Class 6A. They were 10-2 overall, including a runner-up finish

in District 10-6A, before falling to Waco Midway in the area round of the Region II playoffs. The move to the state’s highest classification put perennial power HP against schools with significantly larger enrollments, which means their opponents generally have more options in terms of size, speed, strength, and depth. In other words, the Scots don’t like being pushed around. So this summer, they had some motivation to do something about it.

“There’s always motivation,” Allen said. “The next group always wants to go further than the group before.” UIL guidelines dictate the HPHS coaching staff is unable to work with the players during the summer. So Allen credited his four senior captains — including quarterback Henry Allen, safety Matthew Barge, and linebacker Hayden Schnieders — for setting a good example by mandating attendance in the weight room.

“They really took a leadership role,” Randy Allen said. “They knew it was important for them to be here. Working out as a team creates unity and camaraderie.” It also has a more tangible effect on the field, especially in the trenches, where leverage on the line can be linked to a squat or a bench press. “We want to prove that we can hang with the biggest teams in the state,” Barge said. HP Pass Game Has New Names Don’t expect a switch at quarterback to change Highland Park’s traditional success on offense this season. Henry Allen will be the latest signalcaller to take over the Scots’ spread attack after seeing limited action in a reserve role last year. But don’t let the lack of experience fool you — Allen led the school to an undefeated junior-varsity campaign in 2014 and has many of the same dualthreat tools as his predecessor, two-year starter Brooks Burgin. “We need a dual-threat guy for our offense to be really effective,” said HP offensive coordinator Grayson Wells. “He can throw and run. He throws a pretty pass and he sees the field and makes good decisions.” The Scots averaged 42.8 points per game last season — never being held to less than 28 points in any game — and racked up an average of 431.5 yards of total offense. About two-thirds of that came through the air. The only returning offensive starters are tackle Jack Sides and running back Stephen Dieb, who led HP with 826 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns last season. Besides Allen, this season will feature a new group of receivers including J.T. Dooley, Chris Buell, Jack Toohey, and Cy McCullough. Yet such turnover isn’t

Depth Should Boost HP Defense A year ago, Highland Park entered its first season in Class 6A with a new defensive coordinator, eight new starters, and plenty of uncertainty about how it might stop opposing offenses. The Scots responded by posting four shutouts during the regular season and turning into statistically the best defense in District 10-6A. And that could be a springboard to an even more impressive performance this year. “They worked so hard to improve on some of the little things that maybe we let slide in the past,” said HP defensive coordinator Don Woods. “They started priding themselves on those shutouts.” While this year’s defensive unit will be typically short on varsity experience — only linebacker Hayden Schnieders returns from last year’s starting group — it should feature more depth. “We’ve got great teamwork and camaraderie,” Schnieders said. “We’re all closely knit and all really good friends. We can really trust the guy next to us.” Highland Park’s speedier secondary will include Joseph Sweeney and Matthew Barge, who also will see some snaps on offense. The new-look defensive line should be bigger and stronger, with five players that could rotate among three spots, including converted linebacker

Starter to Watch:

The athletic cornerback and receiver, who made big plays in the Scots’ spring scrimmage, returns to HP after playing last season at Class 3A Scurry-Rosser.

And there could be even more depth at the four linebacker positions alongside the versatile Schnieders. “You can keep your guys fresh,” Woods said. “We’re known for good offense, but we want to be known for doing our part, too.” — Todd Jorgenson
